@rockchalkjayhawk I think playing D1 basketball is a huge adjustment for most of these guys. It clearly looks like he is playing in slow motion out there. Either he is injured, his motor isn't what scouts thought, or he is having trouble adjusting to the speed of the game. Or perhaps a mixture of all of the 3.
I REALLY hope he is back next season. But every game that goes by that hope dims just a bit.
I'm with ya. i had/have high hopes for MJ.
The motor seems like a big issue to me, or lack of. he's like a couple steps behind everything at the moment. weird.
@BeddieKU23 said in Tonight's Game vs Texas:
Yeah the injury. Been a weird one given Self keeps saying he isn't able to play right before games or even at halftime of games.
That play doesn't paint a picture he's giving his all out there when given the chance, injured or not.
I was really hoping this situation would work out.
Sorry to sidetrack this Texas post with more on MJ…but we got time before the game, right? :)
He sure was hyped and had a great scouting report from 247:
“His effort however goes beyond scoring. He has a nose for the ball on the glass and after snatching boards he has the ball skills to lead the break to make something happen. Throughout this past year, Rice has been one of the more consistently productive prospects in the national 2022 class. He has the body and skill set to make an immediate impact in the college game if that is the route he decides to move forward with.”
And from MJ:
I don’t like banging in the post because I’m a shooting guard. I would say where I mostly feel comfortable is at the 1-through-3, but if I’ve got a smaller guy on me I won’t even hesitate to take him in the paint and just kill him. I won’t hesitate. On defense I can definitely guard every position, that’s my strongest point on defense, my versatility.
Something’s not adding up.
Jesse Marsch gets the axe!
Very odd timing. Give him a chance with the upgraded roster! Don’t you normally part ways with the manager before bringing in new players? Weird.
Anyway, sounds like he’s now clear to make a run for USMNT coach.

I got ripped off when i did the same at one point today.
Flipped over, weather looked great, course looked awesome...then I saw Daniel Berger in the lead. I was like, where the hell did he come from?? Replay from last year! Doh!
@Kcmatt7 said in Fran Hate Us game chat:
You’re just not going to win when your opponent shoots 17 more shots than you do. Rebounding was bad. Defense was bad. Offensively we pass the ball too much while in the air and try to make the “extra” pass too much.
If you’re open shoot the ball.
Would have like to see Bill go with a “big” lineup today for a bit with KJ at the 4 and Udeh at the 5. I think it lets you post KJ up and offers a better rebound and defensive matchup.
This was always going to be a tough game. Was an L on the books already. Show up Monday. I actually like the matchup against UT.
The shots attempted stat has always fascinated me. I wish i could interview Self for a few minutes to ask him how other teams get to shoot nearly 20 more shots than us, and the impact that has.
that seems just nuts to me. instant observation: we had, what, 20 turnovers? that just about makes up the difference?
Couple of post game thoughts. Maybe i'll make em lazy thoughts, just like our effort today! ha. or not ha.
-- Dejuan needs help. He's beat. We do not have a capable backup PG. Bobby has made ONE play this year. one. it helped, but just the one. He gets sped up and out of control. simplify!
-- Jalen needs help. Not a brilliant observation, but going into the season it seemed obvious that if you shut down Jalen, you stand a chance of winning. Well, i guess it works if you let him play a bit, and just shut everybody else down. Calling any available JUCO scorers...
-- Iowa State had a good defensive game plan. Unfortunate that the coaching staff could not figure out how to counter.
-- Gradey was a freshman today.
-- Can we just not turn the ball over on fast breaks, please? not that we had a lot of em, but the few we had we seemed to boggle. Sloppy.
Totally weird to hear and see Bilas on a + broadcast.
For sure. I was on a Chelsea binge for awhile, but since Pulisic is hurt, and rarely plays, i need a new team to watch. Step right up, Leeds!
I like McKennie. he's a great player in the middle. Defends, moves forward. box to box.
Leeds! So awesome that McKennie is joining the club.
Hoping the three amigos can keep them in the EPL. Aaronsen and Adams have to be excited.
Go Chiefs!
Let’s see, who would be the “Jayhawk” candidates? Off the top and keeping it in the family…
Jacque Vaughn
Danny Manning
Jeremy Case
Tad Boyle
Rex Walters
Mark Turgeon
Jeff Boschee
Bring on Toppin! Very impressed with his game.
What a pleasing game. Going in I thought our cold streak could easily continue. But as the game progressed, i never thought we’d lose. I’ll take it.
A couple thoughts:
— Gradey is way better when he’s set, or flows into his 3 pt shot.
— An MJ sighting! He did fine. Only sucked on defense on one possession. Maybe. He put some good effort in on a few possessions. He sometimes seems a step behind on D. Wonder if he just doesn’t pay attention to his man, or has no clue. Happy to see him in the game.
— Boy o boy has KJ been an unexpected treat.
— See what happens when KJ, Kevin and Dajuan score a few? Much needed help.
— Pettiford. Hmmm. Obviously he won us a game this year, but otherwise seems like a career backup. Anybody see him taking a huge leap next year? Bill says he plays good D and slides his feet the best.
— I like the spasmodic energy that Zuby and Ernest bring to the game.

Bobby cut himself while shaving with a machette?
He’s had that bandage on a lot this year. Gotta be a monster zit.
I watched the second half last night. Wow, Cade Cowell! He was impressive.
Oh, and I hear we just dumped the final piece of the executive branch — Ernie Stewart.
House cleaning over. Time to hire some new brains.
Can’t say I know anything about Hudson, so no clue if he’s a good coach.
Watched the first half, although with my eyes on my iPad at the same time. So, wasn’t glued to the action. I knew the name of basically one dude, the guy torn between the US and Mexico. He didn’t do too much.
There were some exciting, quality moments for sure!

Unless we can get the real Juan back not sure how much of all these issues that they are dealing with will be fixed. Self needs his leader playing at the high level he was at because he seems to be the glue holding it all together.
I just hope whatever is ailing Juan is something that will pass. If he's got an injury he's going to manage the rest of the season that really makes it difficult to play at a high level when your PG can't do things he normally can do. He has looked hobbled and shook from mistakes he isn't used to making. Makes you wonder if he did get concussed from that fall
Hoping the 5 days in between games gives them a shot at redemption Saturday
Message incoming but not a concussion.
Drat. hope nothing's broken.

It's all about defense. Offense will come around on it's own if we play D.
Just how bad do we want to win?
I agree, but it is a lot harder to be motivated on D when the ball isn't going in on O... Gradey and Kev struggling on O is likely causing mental issues on the other end.
So in my opinion it is a compounding issue, especially when the bench is as thin as it is.
The unfortunate reality is that this is a pretty unathletic and flawed roster. I said from the get that we should have gone after a different player than McCullar who is just not that good and causes a lot of issues for this team offensively. He is a Bill Self pet who can't shoot and can't create his own shot. We essentially are starting 4 role players and Jalen.
Top that off with the mess that is the 5 spot and you see just how flawed this team really is. KJ has been a great player there, but against size he is just going to struggle and we have NOTHING to throw at teams who do have size.
Finally - we lack that bench piece difference maker. Bobby ain't it. Joe ain't it. I still am of the belief that MJ COULD be it if they just let him loose, but still not exactly a guarantee.
Obviously some offense can come from better defense -- turnovers, transition buckets, etc. But, good defense doesn't make a team a brilliant offensively. So, not seeing this team turn a miracle corner on O unless they all up their shooting ability. I think we can be good offensively, but buying in on D doesn't solve our O problems.
McCullar -- ya, been saying and thinking the same thing for a while. He's a Self guy. You can have some Self pets on the floor, but not three of em at the same time --Dajuan, McCullar and until recently KJ. Add Pettiford to that mix when he comes in. I dunno how he thinks you can win without scoring. He's smarter than me, so must be a way!
Which all means he has to let MJ out of the doghouse. He has to. Dude can score. He may eff up on positioning, miss a guy on D, but surely the other Self pet projects on the floor can help offset his issues.
We still have a very good team. The margin for error has shrunk considerably this season, that's all.
@DanR said in Jax playoff game thread:
@rockchalkjayhawk Was the TV peep Tony Romo  ? I think I heard him babble something like that during the Bills/Bengals game.
Sounds about right.
yup, Cincy seems to have our number lately.
I'd like our chances better if Mahomes had two good legs to stand on.
But, the TV peeps were saying if that forces him to play in the pocket, he could be the best at that.
Who would you rather face next week?
If we could morph them, I'd play against the Cincy D and the Buffalo O!
Bummed about Mahomes!
He's a different QB without mobility.
Well that kinda sucked.
I wanted to say the offense is simply challenged, outside of Jalen. But dang, we gave up 48 points in the first half!! 48!
Where do you place the blame?
If Gradey is not scoring, we have big problems. Somebody, anybody, has to step up.
At one point, in kind words, Jay Wright basically said Kevin McCullar sucks and has to get his shit together. At least he got to double digits in scoring. The game started poorly when he got smoked three or four times in a row on defense. blow bys and poor D.
TCU went nine deep, and every player had at least 4 points. I dunno what that means, but i know the Kansas bench can't score.
I know Self likes a defensive minded team, but at some point you have to realize that Jalen can't be the only scoring option on the floor to win games. Dajuan and Pettiford can't be non factors on offense. Everybody has to help out or we'll be in tight games, or worse.
Grrr.

One thing is certain: We need more from Kevin going forward if we’re winning the conference.
I hope not more of what we saw tonight, and many other nights... :)
Honestly, i don't understand the Fran haters. He's just an announcer. He's not really offensive like many others. He knows the game. Knows the coaches. There are way worse. What, do you just want a homer announcer every game?? I'd be fine with that, but it's not realistic.
Eff. Stupid sheep lovers.
Had to watch the game late tonight. So many opportunities to win that game, just crapped away by so many reasons. We could have, and should have won that game, at the end of regulation.
A few incredibly bad decisions were costly for sure:
-- DaJuan attempting to pass it to Zuby on the high post. turnover. why? bad.
-- Self made two bad timeout decisions. Four seconds on the clock and call a TO??? bad.
-- Self (i assume) made a terrible call to try to force an over the top the ball inside to Clemence late. Turnover. Dude's rarely on the floor in non important moments, let alone important moments. bad.
-- The last possession was comical.
I rarely say this, but the referees made some very interesting decisions and non decisions tonight.
Kevin McCullar is BEYOND frustrating. How can you be that bad with your experience?
I knew there was a chance we could lose tonight, but the way we lost leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
I'm not smart enough to now why we really can't get a shot off most of the time. Wilson, dribble drive, toss up a miracle, get fouled. That's all we got?

@stoptheflop said in Why No Sixth Man on this Year's Team:
I've been waiting all year for a bench player to step up and contribute. And for the player or players to contribute regularly and steadily game after game. How far can KU go without a sixth man, like Championship Remy last year? The Iowa St game shows how KU will struggle on offense when two starters are having off games. I thought Clemence helped out on offense in the first half; at least he looks to score. Clemence is an option on offense the few minutes he plays in every third game or so. I don't think he even played in the second half. Bench players were in the game for 35 minutes Saturday and only took 2 shots and according to ESPN didn't record a single rebound. Does Coach Self have any chance of developing a sixth man this year?
There’s only one guy on the bench with the remote ability to change the game like Remy…and that’s MJ.
He hasn’t traveled the exact path as Remy, and of course hasn’t proved himself as he’s only a freshman, but I think there’s some ability there that can pop in flashes off the bench.
And they did!
Sure am hoping the Jaguars can pull off a miracle today so we can avoid the Chargers.
@stoptheflop said in Let's talk Iowa St:
In 19 minutes, Bobby took no shots, scored no pts, had one assist, one steal and one TO. Not nearly enough for the opportunity he was given. Bench players must contribute or they stay on the bench.
Not a good day for Bobby.
Only one official turnover? Seemed like he had way more.
And the MJ Rice saga continues. A healthy scratch. Hmmm. Wonder what he did this time? Disappointing.

Who is our Bro or Sister on this thread who keeps track of our missed bunnies?
Love it and keep it up please.
My bad, didn’t track em today.
Didn’t seem as bad today, but scoring was challenging.
I’d say free throws won the game for us today. ISU made more FGs than us, but KU made 6 more FTs. Had we shot better than 60% from the line, maybe it wouldn’t have come down to one possession.
@stoptheflop said in OU Game:
What does the OU game mean for Zach? He helps on offense; he scored half of our 3s. But, in 12 minutes he only had 3 rbs. and was a turnstile on defense. After 16 games, Coach Self still hasn't found his backup 5.
I think to be fair to Zach, some of the times he was a sieve on defense it was a mismatch. He seemed to get switched on to little quick guys a lot. He doesn’t have KJs quickness.

Whew, doggie. Escape.
Well, I don’t have the guts to read the 400 posts above. Anybody have one nice thing to say? If so, what was the one nice thing? :)
It doesn’t get much worse than that. 21 bunnies missed.
Not a single bucket scored from what, 17 min mark to 5 min mark?
The worst part: Oklahoma players just don’t pass the eyeball test. If we’d a lost to that unathletic bunch of gypsies I’d be pissed!

Dragon, don't buy into this trap game nonsense. we simply will not be overlooking Oklahoma. thats silly. no game in the league will be overlooked. if guys aren't motivated when on the floor, i hope they find a quick seat on the bench, next to Brady.
