The GGG vs Reyna saga got worse • Jan 06, 2023 05:33 PM

Yea, the whole thing just seems soooo sophomoric and embarrassing for the US.

Gio is tainted now. No chance we can ever look at him the same way again.

And the Reyna family. Jeez.

Gradey one of 16 potential Lottery selections at this point.

Kansas (5)

Gradey Dick: 6-7, FR, W, Lottery

Jalen Wilson: 6-8, RS-JR, F, R1

Dajuan Harris: 6-1, RS-JR, PG, R2

Kevin McCullar: 6-6, RS-SR, W, R2

Ernest Udeh Jr.: 6-11, FR, C, Future

The light is shining bright on Gradey for sure.

Unfortunately it’s exposed a few things as well.

Seems like he’s lost his form a bit at times trying to get open on the 3 pt line. Super rushed. I have all the confidence in the world he’ll sort it out soon.

Oh boy. Now Gio’s mom outed GGG as a wife kicker. Wow. She held that in since 1991, but chose to retaliate once her son was called lazy.

This drama just got worse.

I don’t see any way that Gio can play for GGG again. The US team leadership is gonna have to take sides — and pick one who has to go.

Reyna family flagged Berhalter incident; interim coach named
NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. soccer team was plunged into public turmoil Wednesday when the family of former U.S. captain Claudio Reyna said it notified the U.S. Soccer Federation of a decades-old incident involving Gregg Berhalter and his wife in response to the coach’s disparagement of Claudio's son, young star Gio Reyna.
Berhalter said Tuesday his 1991 behavior in which he kicked the woman who would become his wife was “shameful” and that he was “looking forward to continuing my conversations with U.S. Soccer about the future."
The U.S. Soccer Federation has commissioned an investigation by an outside law firm, along with the staff review of the team’s performance over the four-year cycle. All of it leaves the program’s leadership uncertain as the run-up begins to the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host.
“Obviously this is a not a positive time for soccer in this country and for our men’s national team,” USSF president Cindy Parlow Cone said Wednesday during a news conference.
The controversy has become a messy public dispute involving Berhalter; Claudio Reyna, who was the best man at Berhalter’s wedding; Danielle Egan Reyna, a former U.S. women’s player; Rosalind Santana Berhalter, the coach’s wife and Egan’s college roommate; and Gio Reyna, the 20-year-old midfielder limited to 53 minutes by Berhalter at the 2022 World Cup.
For the time being, Anthony Hudson, a member of Berhalter’s staff, will coach the team ahead of exhibitions against Serbia on Jan. 25 and Colombia three days later.
USSF sporting director Earnie Stewart, a former teammate of Reyna’s and Berhalter’s, has been delegated by Parlow Cone and the USSF board to make a coaching recommendation.
“Gregg Berhalter, until the investigation and the review takes place, is still under consideration for the head coach job,” Stewart said.
The turmoil on the men's team follows a $24 million settlement by the USSF last year of a discrimination lawsuit filed by American women players and an independent investigation that revealed systemic emotional abuse and sexual misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League.
The USSF announced Tuesday that Berhalter was under investigation. The coach, whose contract expired last month, simultaneously issued a statement saying a person contacted the USSF “saying that they had information about me that would ’take me down.'”
Danielle Reyna said she told Stewart of the 1991 incident on Dec. 11, five days after Berhalter made remarks at the HOW Institute for Society’s Summit on Moral Leadership that did not cite a player by name but clearly were criticism of Gio Reyna. Excerpts were published in a newsletter by Charter Works, which said the remarks were "erroneously greenlit for publication."
“I wanted to let him know that I was absolutely outraged and devastated that Gio had been put in such a terrible position, and that I felt very personally betrayed by the actions of someone my family had considered a friend for decades,” Danielle Reyna said in a statement Wednesday. “As part of that conversation, I told Earnie that I thought it was especially unfair that Gio, who had apologized for acting immaturely about his playing time, was still being dragged through the mud when Gregg had asked for and received forgiveness for doing something so much worse at the same age.”
Berhalter and his wife Rosalind had “spoken openly” about the matter, the USSF said Tuesday, and Berhalter admitted to the kick. But Danielle Reyna criticized Berhalter's description of the 1991 events.
“The statements from yesterday significantly minimize the abuse on the night in question,” she said. “Rosalind Berhalter was my roommate, teammate and best friend, and I supported her through the trauma that followed. It took a long time for me to forgive and accept Gregg afterward, but I worked hard to give him grace, and ultimately made both of them and their kids a huge part of my family’s life.
“I would have wanted and expected him to give the same grace to Gio. This is why the current situation is so very hurtful and hard.”
The USSF hired the law firm Alston & Bird to investigate the situation. New USSF CEO JT Batson said the firm will try to determine whether Jay Berhalter, Gregg's brother who was the USSF chief commercial officer in 2018, was aware of the incident at the time of his brother was hired.
“None of our current leadership was aware of this,” Batson said of the 1991 incident. “This is something that Alston & Bird as a part of the investigation will, I'm sure, try to understand.”
The U.S. was eliminated from the 2022 World Cup with a 3-1 loss to the Netherlands in the round of 16. Berhalter was repeatedly questioned by media about the lack of playing time for Reyna.
“I too was upset by Gregg’s comments about Gio after the U.S. was out of the World Cup, and I also appealed to Earnie Stewart on Dec. 11 asking him to prevent any additional comments,” Claudio Reyna said in a separate statement.
Claudio Reyna made 112 appearances for the U.S. from 1994-2006 and captained the U.S. at two World Cups. Gio Reyna made his debut in 2020 and has 16 appearances.
Danielle Reyna maintained she never threatened to blackmail Berhalter and never asked that he be fired.
“I’m sorry that this information became public, and I regret that I played a role in something that could reopen wounds from the past,” Danielle Reyna said.
Hudson, meanwhile, will coach what is expected to be a roster mostly from Major League Soccer next month. The 41-year-old was hired as coach of the U.S. under-20 team in January 2020, and a year later became an assistant coach to Berhalter.
“Every player that has a U.S. passport will be eligible to play for our U.S. national team,” Stewart said.
Hudson’s staff will include U.S. assistant coach B.J. Callaghan and current U.S. under-20 coach Mikey Varas. Luchi Gonzalez, the other American assistant coach, agreed last summer to become coach of MLS’s San Jose Earthquakes following the World Cup.
Hudson also has coached fifth-tier Newport in England in 2011, Bahrain's national team in 2013 and 2014, New Zealand’s national team from 2014-17 and Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids from 2017-19.
The U.S. team had not been involved in public turmoil of this magnitude since 1998, when the Americans lost three straight World Cup games and finished last in the tournament among public disparagement of coach Steve Sampson. Sampson said in 2010 he dropped John Harkes from the national team roster two months before the 1998 World Cup because the American captain was having an affair a teammate’s wife, which Harkes denied.

@BShark I remember you saying this summer you'd be stunned if KJ averaged anywhere near my projections of 8-12 pts 5-7 rbs a game early on in the season. He's ahead of schedule and will raise his average points total to 11-12 a game by the end of conference play. He always passed the eye test in my book. Starting to feel comfortable scoring in that 10-15 foot range which will open things up even more for cutters he's been finding so easily. His passing out of pick and rolls and at the free throw line are a thing of beauty. He's always looking for Gradey on those back cuts when his defender is sleeping. Even with his size disadvantage, he's still able to seal his man 8ft from the basket to receive those beautiful lobs from Harris

I think we’re all shocked about KJ’s production and numbers.

Roadies are tough in the league. I expect a competitive game, as i'm sure the team does. They won't be sleeping on Tech.

IMO fouls will be an issue tonight. We'll have to dig into the bench.

While watching all the tributes to Pele over the weekend, it occurred to me that not many people know that he played a match in Kansas City back in 1968. On the 4th of July, no less.

His club team Santos was touring the US that summer to play against NASL teams, and among the stops they made was a friendly against the KC Spurs at Municipal Stadium. I was a ball boy for the Spurs that season and got a comp ticket to see him play. This was years before he would burst onto the radar of American sports fans as a member of the New York Cosmos.

I don't remember much about the game, other than (a) the small contingent of Brazilian fans made LOTS more noise than the thousands of Spurs fans in the stands; and (b) he was by FAR the best player on the field.

Too bad the Spurs went out of business a couple of years later. (Ironically, it happened just months after Pele got his third World Cup win for Brazil in Mexico.) If they'd survived into the mid-Seventies, I might have gotten another chance to witness greatness in person.

That would have been great, being a ball boy when Pele was playing. amazing.

I was fortunate to see him play with the Cosmos in NYC way back when, or actually i think the team was playing at the Meadowlands by then. I was just a kid, but still a memory.

He is playing a lot of minutes and we may forget he's only played 13 games here. I do see him getting tired at times and I think that's just part of his development. He is by no means a finished product physically. Same with adjusting to getting open etc, games like this help him learn and adjust going forward. Film can point out and coaching can continue to work on it. This team did not move the ball great until the 2nd half and Gradey is sort of dependent on getting setup to score at times and the way he was guarded was disadvantageous.

Oklahoma State had an amazing first half on both sides of the ball. First i've seen em play this year, but guessing they played out of their gourds.

Somehow they were able to shut down our 3 pt line, AND any inside penetration.

Credit their effort and strategy. Both Wilson and Gradey affected.

Chiefs are crapping the bed with turnovers so far today. Mahomes with a bad decision for a pick in the red zone. Toney fumbles on an open field reach in. Chiefs need to pick up the intensity to win out.

Even Ochai had some trouble adjusting to how teams guarded him and he was a senior. Gradey is definitely being schemed against, almost every time he caught the ball a defender had a hand in his face so it was a well executed plan. Gradey has an elite shot but he has a ways to go off the bounce from a speed/shiftyness ability. Teams have seen that on film and found some success slowing him down. It's pretty telling what opposing coaches think of Gradey when they are trying to shut down your 2nd leading scorer, who's a freshman. I thought Gradey could have done more of what he usually does when he gets guarded that way is to utilize the back cut for layups etc. Didn't see a lot of that from anyone tbh but especially Gradey who's skilled at this. It makes a defensive player guarding him adjust. Freshman moments. I was very happy with his effort plays yesterday which helped the team win.

It’s very easy to expect more out of Gradey every game after seeing that pure shot. But to shoot that shot he’s gotta get open. That didn’t happen at all yesterday.

So far he doesn’t seem to have as good conditioning as other players. Wonder why that is, or if I’m imagining it.

He forced lots of shots yesterday. That’s fine, we need him to shoot, but the coaching staff needs to find a way to get him open. It sure doesn’t seem like he run off screens like Och used to do to get open. Or maybe our screens aren’t as good?

Well, that seemed like the usual lackluster night before Christmas break game.

Jalen was asleep at the wheel. When that happens, other guys have to step up.

the way Harvard bumped us off the 3 pt line, it was time for our 5 man center rotation to step up. KJ was respectable. Seemed like a game where 23 and 35 could build on their growng confidence. But Self’s game plan obviously didn’t include them. Curious. Or did they just make mental mistakes in their 2 minutes of play?

McCullar filled some of the scoring void. That’s good. Hey, Self gave Rice some run! More!

Onward.

KU cruised easily, but a couple issues to worry about for later in the season.

  1. Self only trusts 7 guys on this roster, even in a blowout. Harris, Adams, McCullar, Dick, Wilson, Yesufu and Pettiford are the only guys Self is willing to give any run. We are vulnerable to injury or foul trouble because Self has set a tight seven man rotation. If we are healthy, we are fine, but if any of those 7 aren't available, that's trouble.

  2. Lack of size is getting us beat up on the glass. Mizzou had 12 offensive boards. Irrelevant in a blowout, but without any size to go to off the bench, that is a continuing concern.

Great to blow out Mizzou (always). But KU has some things to sort out to prepare for March.

Yup, No. 1 above sure is bothersome. more Rice! today would have been a great game for him to get some run, in that free flowing offense at times. his specialty i'm guessing.

Cam had his chance, but Self got scared when they trimmed the lead a bit. He didn't really get a chance to show us what he can or can't do.

I also want to know who makes the personnel decisions and if switching head coaches will create too much volatility

The hunt should be on for both a striker and CBs. When netherlands got up and packed it in we attacked the central channel unsuccessfully. We desperately needed to be able to generate offense by getting it wide and crossing in to an aerial attack. Or from corners. But this team was chronically incapable of both those things. Need an aerial game. Its been non existant for a while.

Ha. we can always dream about having a striker! We've had some past success (Donovan, Dempsey, McBride, maybe Jozy), so it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that we can uncover another.

@rockchalkjayhawk i dont agree. If you get beaten 3 times not marking men, have your supposed face of the team blasting away toothless shots every counter from before the final 3rd, with space ahead of him, and get nothing from flat corners, thats coaching.

At least it speaks to that being acceptavle behavior in training.

Watch Jedi defending corners. Has anyone ever told him to mark the man attacking far post?

If he ever did what he did today on defending corners in practice he should have gotten strong correction. And i like jedi.

I guess another possibility is that they need higher level of training at club but these guys are EPL (adams,
Robinson) and serie a (dest)

I dunno. Who knows. Maybe it's long term coaching. I generally found no fault in our game plan today, so that's what i meant by not a coaching issue today. If you want to blame long term coaching issues for the detailed decisions we made today, OK.

We were indeed beaten on every goal today by guys not marking. horrendous. We've been pretty good at that in the lead up to today, so can we say the coaching was good then? Just seems like tired legs, bad decisions, no conversations between players. Maybe you can blame GGG for not swapping out some players who have played major minutes? Fresh legs would have helped?

Obviously i'm no world cup payer or coach, but when i played, you were constantly screaming at each other about marking, who's got who, who needs to cover what ground, who needs to switch, who needs to cover near and far post if somebody has to cover a run up the middle, recognize an overload, etc. Something went wrong today for sure.

So, maybe that's coaching. Seems if you have guys with experience in the back like Ream, Zimm, Dest and Jedi, they should know better -- at the very least from their club experience.

The toothless shots were a bit embarrassing, i agree, as were the corners.

So, i'm assuming GGG is a goner after this WC. Time for some fresh ideas?

Now if only we could find a dude who can play striker... :(

Outcoached today, it happens.

Nah, today's loss had nothing to do with coaching.

All individual mistakes, judgment calls.

Well, there ya go.

You can't say we didn't have a good chance to win that game. Going into the game i thought this would be a loss, but sad in the way it turned out to be a loss. Didn't need to be.

Generally speaking we played well. We have a lot of possession, a lot of good possession, too. Today the loss came down to very poor individual decisions and execution.

Tyler Adams. Man. the only mistake this guy has made the entire tournament. honestly. he's been amazing. didn't track back. basic stuff. And it was infuriating to watch as he didn't even make an effort, seeing the guy lollygagging to the top of the box. that was a heart breaker.

Sergino Dest. Just decides to not bother to cover a dude breaking into the box for another easy goal. makes no sense. I don't see how you can blame either of those Dutch goals on youth.

They capitalized on our basic errors, and we didn't even come close to capitalizing. So many good chances. We really just don't have the poise, or skill compared to other world cup teams to finish at the net.

Pulisic??? Jesus, dude. He puts that first opportunity in, and we have a different game. He needs to be banned from any free kick/corners in the future.

Pleased with most of today's effort, but very disappointed with a few bad choices.

Don't get me started on passes from Zimmerman and Ream from the back that seemed straight forward but were picked off easily.

Suarez and Uruguay go down in a teary-eyed, referee surrounding mess!

Couldn't make me happier.

The next time I watch one of our 3 pt shots come up short while the shooter stays outside the arc, I am probably going to hurt myself hitting the tv.

The only person who has direct knowledge of a shot's likely distance is the shooter. Follow your short shot, get the rebound.

I’d guess coaching and game plan come into play here. Self has likely drilled into their heads that certain positions/players have to or be ready to leak back to stop any breaks.
