RIP Gale Sayers. • Sep 23, 2020 01:25 PM

Does anyone remember watching him? I'm not young but still too young to remember him. Probably the greatest KU football player I'd say.

Here's his wikipedia of his college days.

Sayers was recruited by several major Midwestern colleges before deciding to play college football at the University of Kansas. While being interviewed during a broadcast of a Chicago Cubs game on September 8, 2010, Sayers said he had originally intended to go to the University of Iowa. Sayers said that he decided against going to Iowa after the Iowa head coach, Jerry Burns, did not have time to meet Sayers during his one campus visit.[3] During his Jayhawks career, he rushed for 2,675 yards and gained a Big Eight Conference-record 4,020 all-purpose yards.[4] He was three times recognized as a first-team All–Big Eight selection and was a consensus pick for the College Football All-America Team in both 1963 and 1964.[5]

As a sophomore in 1962, his first year on the varsity team, Sayers led the Big Eight Conference and was third in the nation with 1,125 rushing yards. His 7.1 yards-per-carry average was the highest of any player in the NCAA that season. Against Oklahoma State, he carried 21 times for a conference single-game-record 283 yards to lead Kansas to a 36–17 comeback victory.[6][7] In 1963, Sayers set an NCAA Division I FBS record with a 99-yard run against Nebraska.[8] He finished the year with 917 rushing yards, again leading all rushers in the Big Eight. He earned first-team All-America recognition from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA),[9] the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA),[10] the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA),[11] The Sporting News,[12] and United Press International (UPI),[13] among others. In 1964, his senior year, he led the Jayhawks to a 15–14 upset victory over Oklahoma with a 93-yard return of the game's opening kickoff for a touchdown.[14] He finished the year with 633 rushing yards, third most among Big Eight rushers, and also caught 17 passes for 178 yards, returned 15 punts for 138 yards, and returned seven kickoffs for 193 yards.[15] He earned first-team All-America honors from each of the same selectors as in the previous year, in addition to the Associated Press (AP),[16] among others.

Only 5 NFL seasons sadly.

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 05:29 AM

Good night, er, good morning, whatever, what a waste of time except chatting Jayhawks is never a waste of time.

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 05:26 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 Text your cousin to get the ref who blew that call!

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 05:26 AM

Dutch town high is Baton Rouge, not New Orleans!

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 05:23 AM

Boo. What the heck were they looking at? Totally bogus. Sun belt refs.

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 05:04 AM

Moot point now

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 05:02 AM

That would be the miracle we need.

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 04:55 AM

Now we need two safeties and a TD to tie!

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 04:51 AM

@approxinfinity Turnovers really killed them in the first quarter. Then defensively we just had no way of stopping them.

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 04:48 AM

So why do they go for 2 there? Now we need two TD's instead of a FG and a TD.

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 03:35 AM

@DanR I had guarded hope that Les would at least make them respectable. But it's not looking too good, and soon he too, will be feeling the heat I'm afraid.

Preseason Predictions • Sep 13, 2020 03:34 AM

Wow, this is a depressing post to see those names as our key performers after the huge disappointment of not being able to play for the title last year. I know we've got talent, but last year was so fun to watch, so amazing to see night after night DDot, Doke, etc leading this team.

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 03:23 AM

I don't get too worked up about KU football. But as a graduate, I have the right to complain. This is unreal. How can this just keep happening year after year? Who's to blame? Is the U so content being a blue blood in basketball that they're content to just write off football as a loss every year? I rarely say 'this is embarrassing' because it's not me out there playing but I'm feeling pretty embarrassed right now watching this. Unfortunately we're used to losing to even the Coastal Carolina's of the world, but to be dominated like this? Nah, this crap has to stop.

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 02:46 AM

This is the same score that the Sox beat the Tigers by tonight!

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 02:43 AM

Didn't our guy cause that fumble by running into the ball carrier? Yikes

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 02:13 AM

I sat next to Les Miles at church once in Baton Rouge.

GAME DAY • Sep 13, 2020 02:04 AM

@DanR Of course it is, it's the White Sox!

Royals pitcher no hitting the Tribe • Sep 12, 2020 04:10 AM

Yeah, it was my bad.

Royals pitcher no hitting the Tribe • Sep 11, 2020 12:33 AM

Oh, crap, the no hitter jinx lives. Glad the Royals are helping me out by beating Cleveland again!

Royals pitcher no hitting the Tribe • Sep 11, 2020 12:31 AM

2 outs in 8th. MLBnetwork with bonus coverage.

Are These Athletes Taught Math? • Sep 10, 2020 08:35 PM

This story was written up years ago from the underarmour perspective. My first name is spelled the same as his, Stephen, but of course until Steph Curry came along almost all people know how to say my name. Now, ironically to me, my name gets pronounced like his name. Steph left Nike because they couldn't pronounce his name correctly, now every one knows how to pronounce his name and no one knows how to pronounce my name! I seriously get annoyed because pronouncing Stephen like the phonetic version Steven has been around since our language was invented, and suddenly people don't know how to pronounce my name. 1st world problem for sure, but I blame Stephen, aka, Steven for it.

RIP John Thompson • Sep 10, 2020 08:27 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I understand all of that, but it'd still be more interesting to me than watching people getting excited about beating Djibouti by 84 points.

RIP John Thompson • Sep 09, 2020 03:38 AM

@justanotherfan I agree, but the funny thing is that I find Olympic basketball incredibly boring. I'd rather see our college heroes try to knock off the internationals than Steph, Lebron, etc.

RIP John Thompson • Sep 07, 2020 05:21 PM

I think Olympic basketball should go back to the college players. Then maybe I’d watch.

Room on the White Sox bandwagon? • Aug 26, 2020 04:54 AM

Room on the White Sox bandwagon? • Aug 18, 2020 02:05 PM

Back on the Sox theme this highlight is a classic. The flyball interceptor is Luis Robert who's a ROY favorite and future perennial MVP candidate. https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/video/luis-robert-steals-jimenez-catch-eloys-face-says-it-all ↗

@approxinfinity Ugh,public disclosure, I've always been a social studies teacher but through some strange circumstances got a new job in a new district teaching science. The Gary Paulson books have a bit of science in them and are good reads. Hatchet is his best known, but he has a lot of outdoorsy type books and I suppose they've got some good science in them.

The "boy who harnessed the wind" is really good too.

Room on the White Sox bandwagon? • Aug 18, 2020 04:30 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 doing 6th gr sciences. Always excited to start the year!

Room on the White Sox bandwagon? • Aug 18, 2020 12:15 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 Haven't started yet. Will be teaching remotely until February believe it or not! That could change after 1st quarter.

Room on the White Sox bandwagon? • Aug 17, 2020 06:40 PM

Yeah the o’s are an interesting case. Pretty quick rebuild. Nats showing difficulty of repeating in baseball

Room on the White Sox bandwagon? • Aug 17, 2020 01:59 AM

@approxinfinity Hey! Never saw this thread. Yes there's a lot of room on the bandwagon. Glad to have you! Sox a little inconsistent right now, but at 11-11, that's in playoff contending territory. Long time since we've been paying attention to the Sox this late in the season.

Final Four bound!!! • Aug 15, 2020 01:05 PM

Wow the optimism in this thread for that final four game! We've administered some epic FF beatdowns of UNC and Marquette, but that day we suffered the same.

Good news, Tried Safari and it works on the laptop! Thanks for the suggestions everybody.

@approxinfinity said in I can’t access this on my MacBook Air anymore.:

@wissox hey, could you try to flush your dns cache? I had to mess with the DNS to fix the site for iPads at one point and Im wondering if your Mac might be holding onto old DNS records that no longer work.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/macpaw.com/amp/how-to/clear-dns-cache-on-mac ↗

Thanks I’ll try. I use chrome.

I’m not using my phone. I hate typing and reading on phones!

This started about 3 months ago and I was advised to clear my cache. So i figured out how to do that, which I needed to every time. Now I can’t even open it up after doing that.

I hate doing stuff like this on my phone. I hope my kubucket days aren’t over.

Just what we & Big 12 needed • Jul 21, 2020 05:56 PM

@Marco I kind of disagree. I think Drew can recruit, but I don't think he's all that great at coaching. With the talent he's had I believe he should have made a FF or two by now.

I still call Guaranteed Rate Field, home of the White Sox, Comiskey Park, or Sox Park. Never called it US cellular, or GRF.

My parents new the man who started US Cellular. The actually met him after he had sold the company and the new owners gave the White Sox 80 million to put the name on the stadium. Of course he had no say since it wasn't his company anymore, but he told my dad it was just stupid.

The funniest naming deal is Wrigley Field. There is no deal. It's always been called that, the Cubs receive not a dime. Think of all the free advertising Wrigley has gotten!

Of course naming rights are not stupid if you're the owner.

2020 Recruiting • Jul 07, 2020 03:11 PM

@BeddieKU23 Alabama has had decent recruiting over the last few years. Too bad for them it

@kjayhawks You didn't even respond to what I wrote. I was writing about KU all you wrote about was Duke.

For the record, I am suspicious of the NCAA and them hammering us and letting Duke walk. I'll be pissed if that happens.

@Marco The majority of KU games are on ESPN or one of their platforms. Doesn't make sense they'd want the program diminished because they make some nice money off of KU. KU is a marquee program that non-partisans will watch because it's KU. While I have cried this bias allegation before, I am not so sure it's really sure.

Just FYI, I'm sure you know this, but fans of most teams think their team is the victim of bias in media and of officiating, although it'd be interesting if Duke fans think the media is biased against them.

Exciting news. The other Frank in my hoops life named BIG player of the decade.

WE’RE BACK • Jun 25, 2020 03:51 PM

@mayjay said in WE’RE BACK:

@wissox Congrats on the new job! There is certainly enough upheaval going on this year that having to find another job must have felt like piling on.

I am seriously doubting any games will be played this year!

Thanks! I’m still skeptical too of any games. Covid being reported among PGA players. LSU got a lot of football players quarantined now.

WE’RE BACK • Jun 25, 2020 02:46 AM

@mayjay No more moves for us! I'm grateful to have received an offer to teach in a different district. Getting a decent raise out of the deal too. Not too many years I've gone up 20% but this will be one of them!

And of course not. No joy at all from 2016. I hope they lose all 60 games this year.

WE’RE BACK • Jun 24, 2020 02:22 AM

@FarmerJayhawk At this point I'll take anything. First season to look forward to in 7 or 8 years for me, and it doesn't happen.

Home Court Advantage? • Jun 23, 2020 03:30 AM

Sorry that would just be depressing as heck. Better than no games though.

Zion/Duke • Jun 11, 2020 03:49 AM

Yeah, forgot about that one! Actually did well to forget it as I tried to forget it!

Zion/Duke • Jun 11, 2020 02:14 AM

@KirkIsMyHinrich Thanks. I'll leave the bylaw reading to you!
