Will the Williamson peeps claim they were renting based on his future earnings?
I haven't followed each and every step of this drama, but reminder baseball people:
A sports starved public has seen their lives upset in unimaginable ways.
Huge numbers have died, awful, solitary lonesome deaths in hospital.
Many others suffering in hospitals, alone, no families at their sides.
People afflicted with other illnesses or accidents forced to also live in hospitals alone, sometimes to their death.
Jobs are lost. Businesses decimated.
Investments lost, life savings gone.
Life events, reduced to mere moments, happy still, but not the way in which people ever imagined their wedding, or graduation, or milestone birthday or anniversary.
Vacation plans scuttled. Moneys lost.
And yet two sides in our other favorite sport can't come together, and say, 'you know what, I guess I can survive on 2 million this year instead of 4 million.' Owners, billionaires many times over all or most can cancel the upgrade on their Rolls Royce this year so they can come closer to meeting the players demands.
You know, for the American People. For the uncle in the nursing home who'd love to watch his team once more. For the 8 year old just learning to love this glorious sport. For the 56 year old with hopes of a great season for the first time in over a decade.
I love this game too much to say enough, I've had it. But they're making it harder and harder.
@BeddieKU23 Thanks! I don't understand why it takes so long.
When is our execution date? In other words, when are we finally going to find out when the bourgeoisie is going to send us to the Gulag?
I'm scared
@nuleafjhawk @bcjayhawk Thanks!
@tundrahok My dad has had it too, not as long as your dad it sounds like, but for about 15 years. Gives me a lot of hope that I'll be here be bugging everyone for the next 30 years.
@Crimsonorblue22 No on retiring. But you're right, God will see us through this.
I'm 56, never been a picture of great physical fitness, bordered on overweight after I got married. Started running 8 or 9 years ago. Stayed relatively active in it, achiveing a few milestones along the way.
Last fall my senior in college daughter said Dad, how about running a half marathon with her. She had entered one with her housemates and quite a few fathers, so I said, sure, why the heck not.
Started training. Crossing a street and looking over my shoulder to avoid getting hit by a car and being turned into a part of the pavement, I tripped. Don't know on what, crack, pothole, dead varmint, whino, whatever, down I went, landed on my metal water bottle and cracked a rib. Stopped running for a month and had many uncomfortable nights in recliner, then bed.
Started running again around Christmas. Chicago and training to run a half marathon in early April don't exactly go hand in hand, but we were blessed with a mild winter, very little snow, and for those days outside wasn't an option, a treadmill in the basement did the trick.
(Tip for treadmill runners/walkers. Videos, plenteous on UTube offer cab views from trains all over the world, same with dashcams driving in very scenic spots. Even makes it feel like you're climbing the big mountain that the train is going up and over.)
Got into a nice little rhythm, increase one mile each weekend, do shorter runs on weeknights and soon I was starting to see the possible. Soon I was doing 6 mile tune up runs on weeknights and enjoying it! On March 13th, I ran 12.5. I should have kept going, but the race wasn't until April 4th.
March 16. Some bad news, non renewed, not proud of this, but humble enough to share that yes, I made some mistakes, albeit in a really tough teaching environment, and was told I wasn't welcome back. Tough blow particularly in light of the current job market. I told them I'd be willing to teach a difficult to fill position next year and they're considering it.
This took the wind out of my running sails. Half marathon postponed to June 14th, but we had the option to run it on our own and turn in our time. Heck, for 80 bucks (ripoff) they should have just said send in whatever you want and we'll credit you. So I stopped running.
I was a bit depressed to be honest, had the daughters wedding coming up to look forward to but even that was a bit depressing as the big event with lots of people coming wasn't happening.
Then the double whammy of double whammies. Cancer. Before you go shedding too many tears it's prostate cancer with a very high rate of survivability.
The cancer was actually a motivator to get out running again. Not a 'I'm gonna die next month I better run now' type of thing, but just a wake up call that life will go on for me and just because some tough things have happened doesn't mean I need to just sit around and mope. So I began to train again only 2 weeks ago. 5 miles on May 6, 7 on May 8, 10.5 on May 11th, then a little lull until yesterday I just steeled my mind into saying just get out there and get it over with. So I did.
Slower than a legless turtle, but I did it.
Never stopped, well once, because my shorts were about to fall down, so I stopped to tie them because my time with my shorts down around my ankles would have been even slower.
Got threatened by a bunch of geese when I ran too close to the little goslings. Chicago's lakefront is closed, but my route took me into a lakefront park and there were some cops in there whom I assumed would ticket/arrest/beat/laugh/taze me but instead I just said I was running a half and they cheered me on.
My turnaround point was the Blues Brothers drawbridge from the original movie. Ran past the geese again, even madder this time, cops cheered me on, and I waddled home after the app said 13.1
I'm doubtful I'll run another of them, although 10K's now are a cinch and I hope to stay active with it. It's a bit addicting. Kudos to the marathoners, I can't even imagine. And yes, I'm a tad proud of my accomplishment.
Not knowing much about KU basketball when I arrived on campus, Missouri felt like to me to be the big rival for KU, not KState. I always enjoyed the Missouri games and was really disappointed when the rivalry ended. Now that they suck in basketball won't make as fun to beat them, but it will still be fun. So I am glad they're back. I'd rather see them than UNC Mayberry coached by Cletus Crankcase.
Maybe he's so good he deserves two threads!
"Kind of surprised no thread on Zach yet." /topic/9753 :) :) :)!!
@Marco True, but I guess he had something to do with the production, so maybe he's ok with it. Despite my negative take on him, I was always glad to be a Bulls fan because of him and the others. I'm still pissed Krause broke the team down.
@Crimsonorblue22 Wasn't trying to joke actually, never heard of Piper HS.
@Woodrow Thanks.
@HighEliteMajor His arrogance is what is just overwhelming me in this documentary. I am sure that if I got to know most of my sports heroes I'd realize that they too were quite arrogant, but he just goes beyond anyone. The last episode he calls out George Karl for walking by him and not saying hi in a restaurant before the 96 finals. Well it's possible George didn't see MJ, but it's also 100% assured that MJ didn't say hi to George either and maybe George is getting offended by Michael not saying hi to him.
@Crimsonorblue22 Thanks! Is piper the name of the school, or is it where Chris Piper went?
Wow that game was epic and Purdue has no one to blame but themselves! The winning play was also a losing play by Purdue because three of their guys chased the loose ball down court instead of staying home to defend their basket. Had they not lost their heads there’s no way UVA completes that miracle play and Bennett still hasn’t been to a FF and Purdue could be the rare team that reigns as national champ for more than one season!
Where is Bates from?
Painter said Eastern was simply beaten out in practice by Williams. But people are wondering aloud what is up at Purdue. I've always liked Matt Painter. Decent coach, decent recruits, seems like a straight up type of guy. But Purdue is fundamentally flawed as a program. 0 final fours since them and Iowa choked in the 1980 final four. You look at the list of final four teams since 1980 and then realize Purdue, Missouri and KState is not on that list. It's one thing if you don't consider yourself a basketball school to avoid the FF, but those schools like to think they're decent basketball schools.
@Marco Well, every team plays their cupcakes during the non conference season. Just look at it as Missouri's our cupcake warmup game!
Yes! Missouri!
Anytime you see KU in some random thing mention it here.
I just read Mike Jordan's first college game was against Kansas, a game in which he scored 12 points and in true to form fashion, felt disrespected by KU saying "They didn't think I could shoot". If anyone has seen the basketball show on the Bulls, it seems like MJ was just always looking for slights.
Q Ball is a terrific netflix series on a highly performing basketball team in San Quentin Prison. The team plays some outside teams including a team that calls themselves the Golden State Warriors. Mainly it's front office people in the organization and the coach is Aaron Miles. He gets a few nice little cameos in the series towards the latter part anyways.
The net of KU basketball spreads wide so as you see these things post them here.
@BShark More like Gopher poison. It's actually interesting, while I was at KU, I became aware of his (Kyle Lindstead) father, who was a preacher in the evangelical group I grew up in. While I never met him, he was quite influential and still is. I looked him up and he's the executive director of that school.
It appears to be an interesting story that out of these very evangelical roots they decided to build a basketball powerhouse using kids, I assume, from all over. There must be a residential aspect to their school.
As a Badger nut, he sounds like he fits the mold of former UW bigs who can shoot it. It's a great weapon obviously, and I look forward to seeing how he performs with the Jayhawks.
I don’t follow as closely as a lot of you but I am reading Zach chose KU. Surprised no one has mentioned it as far as I can see. Looks like a good player to have.
@mayjay ??
@HighEliteMajor Wow, that's quite a read. I've been reading the sports pages today and have little hope that any of this turns out other than bad for KU. Multiple years of probation and losses of scholarships seems imminent. Sucks for all of us. But we deserve what's possibly coming. It will make us feel better at least if Duke gets it too.
@Kcmatt7 Not sure if you saw my little part of this in another thread, but our daughter had a wedding date of April 25th. Of course they were in the same boat as you, finally cancelled, had a small backyard ceremony with immediate family only, and will have a larger celebration sometime later. She suffered the double whammy of also having her college graduation marred. It's supposed to be Sunday, a great mothers day treat for my wife, but no more. Congratulations by the way!
@rockchalkwyo For us flatlanders heading to the NW, the Bighorns to me has represented the first taste of 'real' Rocky Mountains. While not the most spectacular range in the area, they certainly draw the eyes as we drive across 90 after they first pop into view. We love the drive up from Sheridan, the switchbacks, sweeping rolling plains views of really nothing, but it's still awesome to see. And then you get up into the midst of beautiful mountain meadows. But the real treat is coming down the drier west slope and the extremely rugged landscape. Shell Falls, just amazing to see, a first primer for Yellowstone and all of its falls. Man, it's so dang far away, but I really want to go back!
@Marco It's hard to believe but I just saw an article that Adam Miller is the University of Illinois' highest ranked recruit since 2003. And he's not terribly high, around 30 in most rankings. Of course, Bill Self was recruiting for U of I in 2003, at least partially. Adam Miller was the son of a co-worker and when I figured out who she was, he was a heavy KU lean according to her. Obviously it didn't work out. Miller is also the highest rated incoming BIG player which at around 30 is a little hard to believe also.
When Illinois was playing for the NC all the way back to the late 70's when DePaul was they were using Chicago kids. Hurt feelings among spurned coaches in hiring by U of I led to a unofficial boycott of the U of I by Chicago kids. Something similar happened with Ray Meyers son at Depaul who really suffered from a poor relationship with a King HS coach named Sonny Cox (who just died this week). Cox was so influential among Chicago players that basically Depaul could no longer successfully recruit Chicago kids.
Yes I think you're right. So much talent coming out of the city. Derrick Rose, Anthony Davis, Jalen Brunson, Jabari Parker, Jahlil Okhafor all playing major roles on NC title game participants recently. I could have added Devon Dotson's name to the list had we the chance to compete for the championship, although he wasn't a HS player in Chicago, he spent his first decade+ there.
KU has Julian Wright, Sherron Collins and Cliff Alexander among many others from Chicago in the recent decade or so.
@Marco Dallas Comegys was at DePaul with Ray Meyer but he wasn’t part of the final four team with Mark Aguirre Terry Cummings and others. They narrowly lost to Bird in that semifinal. I love going to Hs games here in Chicago. Brad Underwood is learning to recruit Chicago but needs to put a wall around the state. Not sure who next years top guys are but Simeon will be loaded. As usual.
@approxinfinity The predominant rocks on our shoreline are sandstones and limestones. I look for flat pieces that have squarish shapes. I've also collected little shards of glass that get sanded by the gravel/sand and make interesting little pieces for where I need to fill a spot. I've even put a couple of cool looking board pieces that are 3-4 inches long and an inch or two wide. Been fun to do. Trying to figure out the light and structure for the top right now.
@dylans I left for a while, I use the mute feature too. Hope you come back. Of course there's nothing to talk about right now which is why I'm rarely here.
It was supposed to be on the 25th. We had to cancel, you're right, lots of cancelled flights, motel reservations, etc. The church where my daughter attends told us two days before our very small gathering of 12 people couldn't have the wedding there on that Sunday. A friend found us a beautiful and private backyard and God provided us with a beautifully sunny day and warm enough that sweaters/jackets weren't needed. Then they had a drive by reception line that was kind of fun so at least some people who were local could stop by and say hi. We are having the reception later this summer.....we hope.
Thanks on the congrats!
I caught my first salmon of my life during the pandemic. Lake Michigan is at all time record high water levels, so I've been building a lighthouse. I collect brick shards that wash up on our beach. Much of Chicago's lakefront is landfill, so much construction debris gets moved around. Been watching too much TV. Enjoyed the Windermere Children on PBS.org last night. Really interesting true story of children that survived the holocaust. Very moving. Hated tiger king after 2 episodes. Corner Gas is awesome, available on Amazon Prime. Jordan documentary has been fascinating. Watched a prison basketball team at San Quentin on Netflix. Aaron Miles had a role in that documentary. QBall is the name of that one. Rez Ball is a great series too on Netflix. Been taking lots of walks. I guess I should mention our daughter had to pare her guest list from 250 down to 1o when she got married last week in a secret place. That's been the highlight!
@nuleafjhawk That must be it. Some day I hope to go to Kansas and explore that region. Didn't get enough whilst a student at KU.
@nwhawkfan Good news. I've heard rumors that @nuleafjhawk is thinking about transferring to Kstatebuckets.com. The folk, (notice I didn't say folks) there said it'd be great to have a transfer of his stature. It'd double our membership.
@BigBad I'm confused because, you know, you don't look all that Big and Bad!
@BigBad Oh Duh! Here I am thinking it's some assistant AD or whatever!
Great pictures! Who are the two guys with your son who are not players?
Ugh. I understand but it sucks to great players around for just a year or two.
One close race right now, the others kind of as expected.
@approxinfinity Frank had one great season, Danny had 4!
The matchups are set. Some really good contests here. It will be interesting to watch. Paul Pierce is the only 3 or higher seed to survive there hasn't been many surprises. I will try to update results here even before polling closes.
Here's the link. Share with friends, pass it on!
@Crimsonorblue22 You too friend!
Time to resurrect this thread! "Can the dead rise again?" Job asked this question. I say emphatically Yes!
Someone posted that about 5 days ago on facebook. I filled him in with all about Wilt. He was floored by his amazingness. He had 2 games called double triple doubles! 20 P, 20 RB 20 AST. It's kind of funny that Babe Ruth came and obliterated records in his sport and is still highly revered as the GOAT in baseball. Wayne Gretzky did the same, and while I don't follow hockey enough to really argue this point, but is probably considered the GOAT of his sport. Wilt does the same in basketball, and no one will ever see numbers like Wilt's again, and people try to brush it off.
@BeddieKU23 I saw another one that had them last two of the first round.
@ajvan Most of the time I would arrive at AFH about 90 minutes before tip. One student section was behind the bench, it was usually filled, but first couple of rows behind the basket on the Kansas bench side was always open and so I'd sit there. We were much closer to the court than what it appears they allow students nowadays. So Danny grabs a rebound, I'm sitting on the right side of the court, and I watch Danny throw a length of the court outlet pass that bounces on the mid court logo and hits someone in stride who doesn't even need to dribble to lay it in. My angle allowed me to see the narrowest of openings for him to thread that ball through. It was stupendous then and is stupendous now! That's my favorite Danny moment!
I'm not in the Haarms camp. As a BIG watcher I've seen him numerous times and you see that size come in and get scared and then watch him play and think oh, not so scary. Could he have a role on our team? I suppose, but I'm not sure how much of a game changer he is.
