@ajvan Do you consider Danny Manning to be an old timer? Just curious.

@nuleafjhawk Thanks for the feedback. Not sure how to let everyone know the results. Maybe I'll post them later today.

Some epic battles coming up this round. Frank or Sherron? Nick or Doke? Teammates Pierce and LaFrentz? Jacque Vaughn and JoJo White is intriguing.

@kjayhawks Only 2 months? I'm still not over Syracuse!

Games on tv β€’ Apr 04, 2020 07:23 PM

Since I was in the dome in 2012, I've never seen the game so I'm watching it right now. Still amazed I got to attend a NC game, but at 50 bucks a ticket, it was hard to pass up. That Kentucky team was so good even Cal couldn't screw it up and won his NC.

Games on tv β€’ Apr 02, 2020 03:05 AM

@bmensch1 Well 1 out of 3 I'll be interested in watching, although since I was in the stands in 2012 I might watch some of that since I have never watched the telecast.

2nd round of the GOAT tournament Part 2 β€’ Apr 01, 2020 11:40 PM

@approxinfinity

Highlights of mine from that game. Milt Newton reverse layup early 1st half. Chris Piper shot clock beater. Dave Seeger of Oklahoma makes 6 3's in first half. Billy Packer, the announcer keeps saying Kansas can't keep up with Oklahoma at that pace.

To me the best play of the game, right near end of 1st half Danny gets a fastbreak and Oklahoma's star Stacy King is running after him. Danny slows down at the rim, on purpose, so King can try to block his shot, and instead fouls him for an and 1. Brilliant Danny maneuver. He missed the FT, so it wasn't a true and 1!

2nd round of the GOAT tournament Part 2 β€’ Apr 01, 2020 04:21 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I know all of that. I can't wrap my mind around leaving when you have a really great chance to win a championship. Frank Kaminsky also came back for his senior year saying he was having too much fun in college to go play for half empty gyms in the NBA.

2nd round of the GOAT tournament Part 2 β€’ Apr 01, 2020 01:11 PM

@bmensch1 I have watched the 88 game numerous times on YouTube. Never watched 2003. Never will either.

2nd round of the GOAT tournament Part 2 β€’ Apr 01, 2020 02:30 AM

@BShark Thanks! This was a lot of work to put together. Was hoping people would participate.

2nd round of the GOAT tournament Part 2 β€’ Apr 01, 2020 02:12 AM

@DanR It's kind of the same reasoning that I voted against Gooden. He seemed aloof during his time at KU. He was a great player, but left a team after the 2002 that had so much potential for 2003. His going pro was something I didn't understand. I do get the money is enticing, but I recall he had a decent family and had he stuck around with Kirk and Nick, and Langford, and Lee, and Simien, and Miles, goodness gracious, we might have won every game by 20 points!

2nd round of the GOAT tournament Part 2 β€’ Apr 01, 2020 01:32 AM

I don't if you all are able to see the current results of the voting, but Raef has overtaken Withey at present. If you want Withey to win, better call your friends!

2nd round of the GOAT tournament Part 2 β€’ Apr 01, 2020 01:30 AM

@BShark My memory is Arizona was pretty unknown at the time. They were young. .9 years experience. They took me/us totally by surprise when they beat us. The only redemption in it for us is losing to the champion.

@approxinfinity Surprised you don't remember much about him. As @KirkIsMyHinrich points out he was a truly remarkable player. We made a nice comeback at the end of that game and he had a good look from the corner that missed. Game would have been tied at that point.

2nd round of the GOAT tournament Part 2 β€’ Mar 31, 2020 04:50 PM

Early Withey lead over LaFrentz, a big surprise to me.

@ajvan MSU is the one team in this whole thing I feared the most. They were playing very well at the end of the regular season.

Can't wait to see what your imagination has for us next!

2nd round coming today!

Games on tv β€’ Mar 29, 2020 02:47 PM

I did watch the 2nd half of the Purdue game. Robinson had done most of his damage in the 1st half so I didn't see a lot of what I remember. Cuonzo Martin was on that Purdue team too, so they were pretty stout. They're a competitive program that just hasn't been able to climb that hurdle into the FF. Of course it's their own fault in that epic game against Virginia last years elite 8. Why 3 Purdue guys would leave defending the basket to chase a loose ball down court in the last seconds of a certain win had they just stayed home where they should have been, there's a different champion.

That KU team was still pretty young, Jacque Vaughn, Scott Pollard were some names that would play a big role coming up.

Games on tv β€’ Mar 28, 2020 07:33 PM

I know, there's few losses I like to rewatch. I might just to see the guys from that era play.

Games on tv β€’ Mar 28, 2020 06:17 PM

Kansas-Purdue from 1994 sweet 16 when Glenn Robinson is on BTN at 3 and at 7. Not the most painful loss we've had so I might watch.

@Crimsonorblue22 It's funny, that too is one of my favorites, beating Duke at a time like that. But the next game makes me cringe and it takes some of the luster off of the Duke win. Of course, we'll probably get it taken from us so it might be moot.

The Kansas GOAT Bracket β€’ Mar 28, 2020 06:10 PM

@DanR I'm sending it to some others non KUBuckets folk too, so 2nd round will be coming in 2 or 3 days.

The Kansas GOAT Bracket β€’ Mar 28, 2020 05:08 PM

@ajvan Yeah I hear you! I loved Langford, one of my favorites too. Loved to watch his amazing slashes to the rim. Greatest finisher I've seen in the Crimson and Blue! Yet you have to choose between him and the point guard of arguably the greatest team in Jayhawk history. Wow!

The Kansas GOAT Bracket β€’ Mar 28, 2020 03:57 PM

@Kubie Thanks! It was really an amazing exercise. For example, Kirk Hinrich is one of my favs, and I had to seed him 7th! We've had so many amazing players through the years and this was a testament to that.

The Kansas GOAT Bracket β€’ Mar 28, 2020 02:26 PM

My favorite old timer was Otto Schnellbacher. I wanted to seed him higher but it was tough because there's hall of famers and all americans that would have to be seeded behind him. But his story was amazing.

The Kansas GOAT Bracket β€’ Mar 28, 2020 02:05 PM

@approxinfinity Hmmm, now I'll have to read about Don Lonborg!

@Crimsonorblue22 The matchups will get juicier as the rounds move on. It was fun putting the Morris twins in the same bracket, and the OAD contest between Joel and Wigs!

CBSSportschannel has Kentucky games and Duke games all weekend long. They do have our elite 8 game with Duke on sometime tomorrow I think i saw.

Michigan St. was really rounding into form before the virus hit. They were my most feared opponent.

The Kansas GOAT Bracket β€’ Mar 28, 2020 03:25 AM

I worked quite a bit over the last several days putting this together. It was informational and frustrating (grrrr survey monkey). I know some will quibble with seedings. Had I tried to get them 100% right, I still would have been wrong. A few words of how I put it together.

Criteria Averaged 10 points a game over at least 2 seasons.

Or Had other significant statistics such as blocks, assists, etc.

1st and 2nd team All Americans, HOF members, and Jerseys retired received the highest seeds.

1 year players generally not considered with 3 notable exceptions. Joel Embiid, Andrew Wiggins, and Ben Mclemore for their significant contributions and continuing success in the NBA.

Some 10+ point a game scorers had to be eliminated. This was my choice as I wanted to include some very old KU players that earned accolades that would have made them household names to us if they played within the last 30-40 years. Those eliminated were Tyshawn Taylor, Russell Robinson, Scott Pollard, Kelly Knight, Ron Kellogg, Kenny Gregory, Tony Guy, Eric Chenowith.

As you will notice, there is an Old timers bracket. Human nature is we’d probably not vote for these guys since we know little about them. Clyde Lovellette is the nearest to a household name in the entire bracket. Research on your own some of these guys. I was amazed at the story of Otto Schnellbacher! It will be fun to see one of these Jayhawks in the Final Four!

Try to focus on college careers instead of pro careers as much as it is possible. Joel Embiid is a great pro, but his 3/4th of a season in Lawrence isn’t enough to elevate him too high on this list in my opinion. But this is a secret ballot so vote how you feel!

Seedings were just loosely developed by the author. I may have underseeded or overseeded guys. Sorry, this took a lot of time, which I happen to have right now, so play along and have fun. Feel free to share the survey monkey link with other sites. It’d be fun to see this get some play.

Finally, if there are glitches please let me know. I shuffled a few guys around last minute. Hopefully I shuffled everything correctly. I'll have to do this again for subsequent rounds, albeit with fewer choices!

OK so I can't share survey monkey without paying 25 bucks, so I found another that might work for my all time jayhawk brackets. I created a simple survey. Could someone tell me if this works, do the two questions, submit or whatever? Thanks. https://s.surveyplanet.com/z2JRaY2r8 β†—

The Truth dishes β€’ Mar 27, 2020 02:55 PM

If I can figure out how to get a survey monkey thingy on here. I know how to email it to people, but need to figure out how to put the link on a post here.

I'm putting together an all time KU team bracket 'tournament' that I'll roll out here in the next day or two.

2021 Recruiting β€’ Mar 27, 2020 02:27 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 No, not in class.

2021 Recruiting β€’ Mar 27, 2020 01:24 AM

Doesn't mean he isn't a good player, but he plays at a relatively weak basketball school and plays in a relatively weak conference. I pay fairly close attention to HS hoops around here and have not heard of him. Again, not something to draw conclusions on, but I'd be skeptical about his future in high level hoops.

Other bball news β€’ Mar 26, 2020 01:39 PM

NCAA football had the purest champion in sports (yes all sports, I've studied all sports!) when it was a 2 team playoff. While there was some debate over who the two best teams were, there were no cinderellas, and we all watched. MLB when it was a 4 division league had really pure champions. But dad gummit, in my best Roy voice, the dance is a ton of fun and so unpredictable.

Yeah, I watched the game last night. I watched Wisconsin play just before and knock Villanova out of the tourney again. KU-Wisconsin is looking good for the final. It's all very real.

Fake news. This team was going to win it all.

Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU β€’ Mar 22, 2020 04:02 AM

Dang you guys are getting me excited for next year!

Anthony Davis v. Jerry West. Jerry was 6' 2". For his 93 game career he averaged 24.8 points a game and 13 rebounds. Did I mention he was 6'2"? Now I like and admire Anthony Davis too, but whoever put this together really doesn't know all that much about college basketball. It could have been a good thing, a chance to teach people about an incredible player like Jerry West.
