KU Team Picking Thinger • Mar 22, 2020 02:49 AM

IDK. Selden, Embiid, Chalmers, Rush, Graham. 4 out, 1 in. Self not gonna like it, but it is what it is!

KU Team Picking Thinger • Mar 22, 2020 02:36 AM

@BShark Thanks

KU Team Picking Thinger • Mar 22, 2020 02:12 AM

5$ line, 3rd person, Name?

4$ line, last person name?

3$ 1st person?

2$ 1st, 4th?

1$ 2nd?

Sorry, revoke my Jayhawks fan card, but an exercise like this needs some names instead of just faces.

There goes my perfect bracket

To show how subjective these things are, I found a list of the 25 greatest, and while greatly flawed, it did rank Danny 9th, but their 4th ranked player Hank Gathers doesn't even make ESPN's tournament. I hate ESPN's bias and it shows through so obviously here.

@DCHawker Another name you and I forgot is Mark Aguirre, a truly great player who put Depaul basketball back on the map. Love em or hate em, but Kentucky had a mini dynasty in the late 90's and they're not represented.

Well Some Good news - -Some Bad News guys • Mar 21, 2020 12:19 AM

???

@Crimsonorblue22 Remember Billy Packer almost jinxing us by declaring the game over. I mean we were winning by something like 25, but it was the 1st half and we did nearly give it all away before reasserting ourselves.

@Crimsonorblue22 Haha!

I know I shouldn't care, but there are so many names above Danny and Wilt in all the brackets it's borderline outrageous. I'm not going to comment on the women in the list because I'm not qualified to discuss their merits. There's only 1 Kentucky guy which is a little surprising, but that's made up for by an inordinate amount of Duke players. Interestingly, I taught with Seimone Augustus' HS coach at the school she attended. She was way underseeded. She was such a phenom she was on the cover of SI For Women as a HS Freshman!

Pete Maravich as a 13 seed is ridiculous.

Tyler Hansbrough is borderline ridiculous as a 5 if Danny is an 8.

Wilt had 31 rebounds in his first college game! Imagine if Zion had done that!

Christian Laettner made a really famous shot that propelled his team to the national cham....uh wait a minute, to the final four.

7 Duke players since 1990? Why haven't they won about 10 national championships during that time if they have that many?

Jerry West was fantastic. Anyone leading WVU to a national championship must have been so. 13 seed?

Have they never heard of Clyde Lovellette?

Or George Mikan?

Bob Pettit?

@jayhawks2010 said it best. What was this a 22 year old Duke graduate that put this together?

Happy 25th Anniversary • Mar 19, 2020 09:56 PM

Another year, another #1 seed, another early exit against a Virginia team we should have beat. It'd have been easier to cheer Tyus' heroics had we been more successful, but I'm still in shock we got manhandled by Virginia like that.

Badgers! National Champs! I actually don't trust a system that had Duke rated #1 even after the embarrassing losses they had.

Best individual performance of the year • Mar 19, 2020 04:43 PM

@BeddieKU23 If I had put them in order, I'd have had the Doke game 2nd, and Marcus 1st v. Oklahoma. That was such a great all around performance.

Best individual performance of the year • Mar 19, 2020 04:10 PM

It was a great season with some great performances! 31 games with 7-10 players playing in each means there's a lot to sift through. I did my best without going overboard. Here's some worth considering. Generally, it's points, RB's, Assts, and whatever random stats I included.

Duke M Garret 12 5, 5, 2 steals

UNCG D Dotson 22, 8, 6

Monmouth I Moss 5-6 3 pointers, 21 points

ETSU Doke 21, 7, 4 blocks, 3 steals

Colorado Agbaji 20, 12, 4-6 3’s.

@TCU D Dotson 18 pts, 11 assts. 3 steals Involved in 2/3rd of scoring plays.

Oklahoma M Garrett 24 5 7 4 steals 6-9 3 pointers I think this one is the top all around performance of the year. 1/3rd of his made 3's were in this game.

@Baylor Doke 23 19 3 blocks Big stage against talented bigs and totally dominated.

@OSU CBraun 16, 9, 4-8 3 pointers Started because of McCormack susp.

Honorable mention. Doke 31 points against TCU with 14 RB's and 5 swats.

DDot 29 against KSU. 6-8 3's.

A break from our own troubles • Mar 19, 2020 01:19 AM

@approxinfinity Hadn't realized an old thread of mine had been revived. Looking through the comments, got a little 'homesick' for Lulufulu, brooksmd, JayHawkFantoo, KUSteve, etal.

I just report the news, so don't shoot the messenger.

KU Game of the year. • Mar 18, 2020 11:24 PM

@BeddieKU23 I didn't quite have the time to research every game! I knew there was an impressive win when we were shorthanded and that was the one. Thanks.

Games on tv • Mar 18, 2020 09:25 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I looked at their roster and no Love, but they had Westbrook. @approxinfinity I'm not sure I want to watch it. I recall them making a bunch of threes and us turning it over frequently.

KU Game of the year. • Mar 18, 2020 09:17 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I agree as I said above. ESPN's schedule shows the rank of the team when we played them, so no indeed, Dayton was not ranked. I just remember that as a very fun game to watch. Not necessarily high stakes, good basketball being played.

I probably should have put the last TTech game. We played very well as did they. We held them to two points in last 8 minutes of the 1st half. Nip and tuck 2nd half, sole possession of 1st was the result. A very good win.

KU Game of the year. • Mar 18, 2020 07:23 PM

What was the best game of the year? I'm not counting losses even though two were close exciting games, well 30 TO's against Puke is not exciting, but you get the point. I'll list them in order as they were played so this is not my ranking of the 5 best, although my first may have been the best. I'm going to add another list or two during this period of being homebound so if you don't like this list, another couple are coming.

KU 90-Dayton 84 High scoring, overtime, lots of lead switches, but they built it to 8 with 8 minutes left. Crutcher made a 3 with 3 seconds left to tie. OT was ours. High impact game when viewed through the lens of the entire season.

Kansas 60 Huggie 53. In AFH, this was a good early test in the league as WVU was ranked 14th. They showed it in the first half before we overcame that 6 point half time deficit and sent the Mountaineers home.

Kansas 81 KState 60 KU 62 KSU 58 Maybe this belongs in a most memorable category because we'll remember this one for a long time as will Silo Tech. Otherwise just a domination of a normally tough opponent. The revenge game was a little dull but uneventful.

KU 58 WVU 49 Just like the 1st time we played them we were losing by 6 at the half. Marcus' Garrett superb defense fueled a run to close out the game from a 49 all tie to the final score. WVU doesn't make a FG in last 5:59 of game, but we don't either after the 4:50 mark. This game really cemented in my mind how special this KU edition was.

KU 64 Baylor 61 HUGE win! One of us predicted the annual Baylor swoon right around this time (thank you very much) and we pulled off a nice semi dominant victory that was made close because we couldn't inbound the ball near the end. Baylor was actually very good this year as evidence by their win against our weakened team in AFH.

Those are my five. The Dayton game is the game of the year from an entertainment standpoint. The 2nd Baylor is the most significant game, so I give it the nod as the game of the year. How about you? Which did I miss?

Games on tv • Mar 18, 2020 06:28 PM

@approxinfinity I know. I was watching a little of that game, and goodness, we sure had stockpiled some serious depth. They were good enough to beat defending NC Florida who'd also win it that year, but I look at their tourney games and they underachieved. Beat 8 seed Kentucky by 12, then, 14 seed SIU which they beat only by 3, and then got controlled by UCLA, no slouches, but young, some guy named Westbrook and Darren Collison who torched us if I recall correctly, although I'd rather not.

Mythbusters: Wilt, the Incredible Stilt! • Mar 18, 2020 01:43 PM

@nuleafjhawk He averaged 50 points a game one season! Incredible!

@dylans I know he didn't win. I wasn't around then, so I couldn't argue this point, but Wilt it's been said didn't have much around him during his NBA career.

Mythbusters: Wilt, the Incredible Stilt! • Mar 18, 2020 01:01 PM

I just laugh at people who argue MJ or Lebron for the GOAT. When you see the 4 best scoring averages in a season were his, 6 of the top 7 rebounding seasons were his, and how much above the other competition his stats were, well, it's clear. He averaged almost 46 minutes a game. Imagine his ppg had he been better than a 51% FT shooter!

Mourning our loss • Mar 18, 2020 03:12 AM

Wow, take care Marco.

The mythical national champions is how they'll phrase it.

I wouldn't be up watching if I had to go to school tomorrow.

# 1 at Real #1 Game Thread • Mar 17, 2020 04:04 AM

We had some of the ugliest last second shots in history in this game.

# 1 at Real #1 Game Thread • Mar 17, 2020 04:03 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 Yes, two weeks, plus we get spring break. Could very well be a month off.

# 1 at Real #1 Game Thread • Mar 17, 2020 03:55 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 Sorry stepped away. Yeah we're out for a bit at least. Today was our last day.

# 1 at Real #1 Game Thread • Mar 17, 2020 03:34 AM

Amazing, that guy doesn't choke on that FT and it ruins an instant classic. But since he chokes, a game for the ages.

Ochai career arc similar to Wayne would be great considering what we're losing off this team.

@FarmerJayhawk Yes, that Dunk, goodness, what a throwdown.

Selden, junior year Selden anyways was one of my favorite Hawks

For years I complained that ESPN wouldn't put the number of fouls on the game info. They finally listened. It's not on this telecast i noticed.

Man, we're going to lose this game.

A Fifth Year for Doke? • Mar 16, 2020 09:16 PM

The 1988 National Champs were probably not the best team although we did have the best player. I remember that team well...

Mock March Madness • Mar 16, 2020 02:57 AM

If you look at @bskeet's excellent rundown of all of our teams accomplishments, it should be a no brainer who wins it.

A Fifth Year for Doke? • Mar 16, 2020 02:52 AM

@bskeet 37-3! Love it!

@mayjay Yeah, I've got a two week break and I may do the same.

Mourning our loss • Mar 14, 2020 03:32 AM

This really is awful. All year we watched, with anticipation, of a great ending to this season. Had a few ups and downs along the way, but many more ups than downs, a 16 game win streak and counting, the marvelous engineering of a dunking machine named Dok, the lightning quick wizardry of the best closing at the rim guard we've had in a long time (anyone better?), and an iron curtain defenseman who will rank among the all time greats at a program that appreciates all time greats on defense.

Every season in my KU memory except 97 and 03 we've entered March with question marks. I really thought those two seasons were our years. But this year in my mind was a 97 and 03 type of season. KU was going to win it this year. And then they didn't.

We can't blame anyone. Can't blame weak 3 point defense, or the lack of a surefire three point shooter. Can't lament Dok shooting 3 of 12 at the line in the most crucial of times. No finger pointing at a relatively thin bench. Can't even shrug and say, wow, that Glen Robinson got super hot and there's not much we could do to stop him. There's no one to blame.

In fact we can't even properly mourn this loss because it would be in very bad form. An epidemic that is unprecedented in our lifetimes, at least here in the US, creates a new form of March Madness. Social distancing is the word of the year. A week ago I doubt anyone knew what this meant. It's a term that inserted itself into March Madness in many ways.

In Illinois where I attended school as a child it cost my high school a trip to state for the first time since I was in HS 40 years ago. In fact tonight as I write I would have been in Peoria cheering on the Red and White. (did I just say I was in HS 40 years ago?)

For the brother in law of my daughter it cost a chance to wrestle at DI nationals as a top 8 ranked 197 pounder at Virginia.

My favorite time of year, Players championship and the island green, Selection Sunday, First weekend, final four, opening day of the greatest use of grass since Abner Doubleday devised his little game, the splendor of the Masters. All in one month. All cancelled, or postponed in a few cases, but the Masters without Azaleas will be just a little less special.

My half marathon might get cancelled. I've trained for months, likely I'll never attempt one again.

My daughters wedding in a month. A little up in the air right now, but will happen one way or another.

And we can't complain. Nor should we. My elderly parents are scared even if they're putting a brave face on it. So are some of yours. My recovering from Leukemia nephew suddenly has a new threat. How can we complain about a loss of a tournament?

There's going to be some regret. But LORD willing in a month or two we'll be able to collectively pat ourselves on the back and say thanks. Your sacrificing the chance at a championship saved someones life, one of those cases where you won't even know whose lives were saved because they weren't infected.

I like the version from the good book that the Byrds put to song 3000 years later.

1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

How many days til Late Night?

NCAA Tournament: Should it happen? • Mar 13, 2020 09:24 PM

@kjayhawks Really? Who did you have winning it? What was the score?

2020 Bubble Watch • Mar 13, 2020 05:03 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I looked at ESPN thinking they might, you know, focus on the favorite to win it all and how it impacts them. Well nothing about our team which I guess doesn’t matter but is still proof ESPN has flyover country virus.

NCAA Tournament: Should it happen? • Mar 12, 2020 09:44 PM

These wounds will fester. 1994 the White Sox were one of several favorites to win the World Series. The group of owners, including the Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf forced the lockout to happen. No world series. Major bummer, still sucks. Frank Thomas' best shot at winning a ring. Technically he got one in 2005 but was hurt. Of course a big difference is the entire team comes back the next season. We won't see Dok or Dotson again. Combined with the potential sanctions this is a bitter pill.

My NCAA Prediction . . . • Mar 12, 2020 09:14 PM

You had a great thread going @Marco but nothing kills a NCAA predictions thread like the cancellation of the whole thing!

Is Silvio finito? • Mar 12, 2020 02:27 AM

@BeddieKU23 Self texted Gassnola, "we good?" which seems to fly in the face of what people are saying here that KU is being punished for something they they didn't know anything about.

Did I ever mention I’m an ET? Helped me get a sweet scholarship at KU.
