I was screaming (internally, didn't want my wife to think I was crazy, yet) as they pressured our guards frequently fouling, yet the team who apparently fouls more than anyone else, wasn't getting whistled hardly at all. Frustrating indeed.
Read this as to why Cliff should probably be playing more.
@Blown JoJo just got nominated for the college hall of fame, I doubt your other excellent choices will ever be. I didn't grow up with JoJo, although I do remember a few NBA games with him at the end of his career.
So, I'd put JoJo and Kirk, I mean Cedric, oops, I mean Aaron, dangit, I really meant Sherron, or Mario.
@Lulufulu I hesitated to say anything. Thanks, not offended.
I'm sorry, but if we start posting stuff like this I'll have to leave KUBuckets.
You're right, 4 seconds isn't much time to go full court. I watched it afterwards and realized he still had several seconds to get something up decent, but I also know he didn't have oodles of time to draw up a play in his head.
If I understand what you're saying there were about 10 boys of summer moments in that game related to rebounding. Some appeared to be fouls, some didn't. Some the balls were already in their hands, but ball security seemingly wasn't valued.
Right at the start of the 2nd half there was a defensive rebound where Ellis grabbed with an authority. It was as if Self had told them that the Mountaineer mascot with the rifle had the authority to shoot someone who lost another defensive rebound.
No one seemingly rebounds with authority anymore. I used to love guys snatching a ball down and slapping it into their 2nd hand with a shout. It's my ball they seemed to be saying and you're not going to get it from me. I was waiting for someone to grab a board last night and swing his elbows around to clear the pesky little ball hawks away.
I will say this. A lot of those ORebs for the Hillbillies came on missed three pointers, classic missed shots for offensive rebounds. It's still frustrating to see it happen repeatedly during our match last night.
Self is saving Cliff for next year.
Sad to say but they'll never call a travel in a situation like Statens game winner and they'll never call a foul at the other end. My instinct was there wasn't a foul on our next to last play (perry's miss) but possibly a foul on whoever tried to tip it back in.
On the inbounds play for their faux winner. The ball appeared to go out of bounds right in the corner. An inbounds pass from the corner is very difficult if you defend it with a tall player. But the refs gave them the ball just to the right of the basket.
PERRY DUNK THE BALL!!
Next time someone wants to grab a rebound with authority fine with me.
At least we could have tried to force Staten to pull up or pass to someone for a jump shot instead of a wide path right to the basket.
I thought we were going to get blown out the way the game started and based on what happened last year. At least that didn't happen.
Still don't like Huggy and never will.
@RockChalkinTexas I pointed it out to Jesse on the live blog. I was amazed that they didn't review it. I thought they could review it.
I wondered on that, but it'd be pretty ballsy to call it.
Feeling fortunate to be down 3.
5 points, not bad all things considered.
Don't forget, Baylor game started the same way. Although I don't see a comeback here on the road like on Saturday.
@brooksmd We have an 8 next to our name and I felt coming in like we have no chance to win this game.
@brooksmd I probably won't get to see the game for all this typing
@Crimsonorblue22 I'm working both chats!
I'm gonna retract my comments from Saturday. I can't stand Mushberger!
You must have a big photo album!
I know you opened it up to Royals fans, but apparently it's not generating a whole lot of discussion! So, as a White Sox fan, I'm ecstatic!
I actually hope it doesn't mean 30 more years of mediocrity for the Royals. It wouldn't bother me at all to see the east coast darlings go through 30 years of mediocrity. One of baseballs weaknesses in the last two decades has been the lack of smaller market teams being able to consistently compete, the Cardinals really being the one exception.
I'd say if you're a bad shooting team you better learn how to rebound and especially how to play defense.
@nuleafjhawk I am the selection committee, how do you think Bo got on there?
I just did realize my post made it look like that's what I said. Note to self, reread before hitting submit!
@Lulufulu Calipari is a winning coach. I can't stand the guy. Don't know if the selection committee will take it into account or not.
It's worth noting, and I've said this before, but Popovich was also some kind of grad assistant under Brown. Brown may have presided over the best group of coaching talent ever in his few years in Lawrence.
Wiggins is in the position of justifying his leaving early, although playing for a 11-40 team can't be that exciting I'd guess. I know they draft on potential, and we can see it, but we can also see he's not quite ready for the NBA.
New River Bridge is a highlight of any trip to West Virginia. Driven across it a couple of times.
Well I sure don't want to get into a pissing match here so go ahead, let the announcers irk you and I'll let the players irk me!
@KUSTEVE I guess if you're looking for an OSU homer, you'll find an OSU homer. Not sure where you get your info, but, I did actually watch the game,
And once again, you, and @Blown directly above your post prove my point. You're getting irked, annoyed, irate, etc over what an announcer says. Who cares what they say? There's plenty to get irked about during a game, like passes to the stands, 3 pointers with no rebounders, etc. Why let what some announcer says irk you?
Yet another reason to be proud as Jayhawks, Jo Jo White announced as a finalist for the Naismith (college coach at Kansas) College Basketball Hall of Fame, along with Calipari (former KU assistant coach) and Bo Ryan. The others I have no clue if they have KU connections. Tim Hardaway, Spencer Haywood, Kevin Johnson, Dikembe Mutumbo, and Bill Fitch, Robert Hughes, and referee Dick Bavetta.
No I missed it, I did hear about it. I was at the KU baseball game. It wasn't going well, left when it was 8-1, missed a nice comeback but we still lost 8-5. KU's starter was pretty good today until the 4th, and then when I complained about the coach leaving him in too long, the reliever totally blows the game, he was a freshman, tough place to make a college debut and it was over.
I attended last night, and we played them pretty tough. A 3 run bomb was the big difference in the game.
@drgnslayr, I missed the banners comments. I guess my point is when I live blog with the gang on JNew's, people complain about the announcers, even before it begins. And I just get tired of it. Not nearly enough to sacrifice my membership in this fine KUBuckets organization however!
I don't know @drgnslayr, I really respect your basketball opinions and your great contributions to this site, but at least i get a little irked by our fans complaining about announcers.
I said on the JNews blog during the game the only time it's really bothered me was Billy Packer cheering for Memphis during the 08 game.
I don't listen that much to be honest. I thought he gave us a lot of respect today. Sure he disagreed with calls, but good grief, we all disagrees with calls! I know there's not a mic in front of us when we do it, but announcers tell it like they see it.
Just my two cents worth for what it's worth!
Great win by the way. I saw KU's baseball team in person today get whooped pretty good by LSU, but it was fun nonetheless.
@FarSideHawk So far not so true I guess
KU by 14 on the 14th. No love for bailor
I was excited until I saw they were doing one on Sean Miller in following weeks, and then Thad Matta. I guess they're just doing the series on any old coach.
@wrwlumpy Not nice
@jaybate-1.0 I thought of this and posted it at the end of the discussion the other day, but it bears repeating: Jerrance brings new meaning to "Beware of the Phog"!
What I really miss in college basketball is scoring. Last night I check to see the Illinois-Michigan score. They were 3 minutes left in the half, Michigan 18, Illinois 14. I watched for a few minutes and my eyes couldn't take it.
OAD's, TAD's to blame at least in part while more sophisticated defenses keep scoring down in a lot of places like Madison, Lawrence, UV, Gainesville, GTown, etc.
@wrwlumpy
Nice find. And I agree dunking isn't basketball, at least it's never been part of my game!
This gives new meaning to "Beware of the Phog"
I should say, does a team that has been top 10 all year more or less automatically deserve to have a player? I think some here think so. I'm not so sure. Teams without superstars, but with very competent players like we have may not deserve a nominee, yet are still very good teams.
Frank the Tank. If a Jayhawk isn't winning, it better be a Badger!!
@Gunman, Welcome, but you must check your gun at the door! We don't want anyone getting hurt here :)
I will warn you. Let me tell you what has happened to me since I joined.
My wife thinks I'm a weirdo for having virtual friends.
Sometimes I think I'm a weirdo for having virtual friends.
You will stay up late trying to research all of the movie, history, religious, sports, government and drug references that @jaybate 1.o puts into each one of his posts.
You might miss a game because you'll be live blogging so much during it that you won't even see it.
You might get tickets to a KU national championship game which happened to me through this group of fans. (well, the other site before this developed) This actually happened, right @brooksmd?
You might develop an intenser hatred for misery and methsoury all at the same time, although you probably are already there.
You actually just might have some fun. Even laugh on occasion.
You might argue with someone but they'll tell you it's alright in the end.
Always nice to have someone join the group. Thank @approxinfinity when you can, he's the one who got this all started.
@ralster Mega PHOF's for your comments about the effects of pot. I'm not in the know like you are, but it was well stated. I couldn't agree more.
I don't have the time today, but an analysis of National Champions in the three point era would be interesting. What was the best three point shooting team and what was their inside game like?
Is it possible that these are the types of threes being taken that he 'allows', in other words, he says shoot them, but only if......?
Threes can go dry at the wrong time of course. I try not to remember such things, but I believe it was the Virginia Commonwealth game that we kept jacking them up and nothing was dropping. Game, set, match, see you next fall. Of course VCU kept jacking them up and they were going in and wrote their names into the history books as the mid major FF team.
It would be interesting to know what percentage of three point shots lead to offensive rebounds as compared to 2 point shots. It seems that 3's that are missed lead to long rebounds which are easier to grab offensively than a well defended two point shot. This of course leads to more possessions.
I'll say this, let's hope they keep shooting them because it's what's working right now. Halfway through the second half last night I looked at the box score and we had made 8 threes and 6 twos. Only 6 made shots inside the arc halfway through the 2nd half, amazing! By games end as TT wore down that number came into balance, 15 2's and 11 3's, plus 10 FT's most of which came on shots in the lane.
@joeloveshawks We should have a kubuckets.com golf open and we all can hit drivers poorly!
@brooksmd Friday night at 7, Saturday and Sunday afternoon I think. I'll probably go Fri and Sat
@brooksmd
Heading to Alex Box for KU baseball this weekend?
Total foul on that offensive board. Sometimes I hate referees
My son is there, I almost went, decided to stay home.
@nuleafjhawk Why? Youth and complacency kicks in? I mean twice we blew 20 point leads this year if memory serves, although we did win both games. Other games, nice leads and lost, ie, Saturday.
I can't get over the arrogant schmuck on the OU bench, and his counterpart on the gridiron in the 1980's and his band of underachievers to ever want to cheer for OU. I know they've gone on a classier hiring track since the other cheating schmuck left, but still.....
