Uh-Oh, downvotes possible • Jan 02, 2015 03:31 PM

@approxinfinity Shoot you removed it before I had a chance to give @jaybate-1.0 a downvote. Was really looking forward to that.

I know a guy who got too many downvotes on Yahoo and his wife gave him the ultimate downvote, left him for some dude, I think it was @drgnslayr, who always got upvotes. (no harm, no malice Dragon!)

Uh-Oh, downvotes possible • Jan 02, 2015 06:10 AM

Ok, good it doesn't show up on my notifications as to who downvoted me. That could be a little divisive among our friends here!

Uh-Oh, downvotes possible • Jan 02, 2015 05:54 AM

So I noticed we can downvote posts now. This site is going to start getting nasty. Just for an experiment someone downvote this post and I want to see if my notifications will tell me who downvoted this.

Congrats Wissox • Jan 02, 2015 05:52 AM

It was a nailbiter. Now let's beat UNLV!

@Crimsonorblue22 Wigs 29 points, BMac 16. Nice performance by both guys.

I'm not sure why Kirk has been out, but he came back tonight shot a perfect 4-4 with two threes. On the downside on that game, Darrell Arthur had another DNP, which he is suddenly piling up.

Congrats Wissox • Jan 02, 2015 03:20 AM

Thanks Brooks! It was nice to beat the vaunted SEC. Wouldn't mind seeing OSU win, but it's not looking too good right now!

Shane is an awesome movie. I enjoy watching all of the scenes that the background changes. The Tetons are covered with clouds, then someone else is shown and they go back and now the Tetons are cloud free. It happens all through the movie!

@colojhawk Welcome to our little KU cult. When you get a KU shaved into your forehead, or if you have no hair there, a tattoo at the same spot, give us a pic and you'll be officially in.

Good comments all on our Jekyll and Hyde performance last night. I couldn't watch it with fully devoted attention, something about being all together as a family for a few days that distracts me, but here goes.

Oubre was looking like a bust to me, but is appearing to be getting it rather quickly. The question is, why is he starting to get it and the veterans appear to be forgetting it?

I hate turnovers and, thankfully we solved that problem in the 2nd half but our TO's kept them in the game. Bo Ryan sits guys after making a TO. They may come right back into the game, but is it any wonder they lead the nation every year in ball security? Maybe every team does the same, but he has his boys practice simple passes nearly every day. I've seen video of the drills, they're so easy 5th graders could do them. We limit the TO's we're going to not look like we did last night.

Tonights riddle wrapped up in a puzzle award goes to Wayne Selden. The good news with him is maybe he's our next Tyshawn Taylor and by his senior year gets it and leads us to the NC game. That's my only hope for the guy right now.

Brannen Greene for the don't get too excited about one or two good games because I'm going back to my irrelevant status award. I really thought the young man had figured it out a few games back. Now I fear we will never see him contribute to this team. I fear that because he just seems to ooze potential to me.

As others have pointed out I don't think we'll need to worry about Frank Mason much anymore. He's become a steady go to guy for us.

UNLV Sunday will provide a test/tuneup for the league games. Last year we failed that test with SDState. We don't lose many games at AFH so that certainly sticks out in my memory. UNLV just beat Arizona, no easy task.

Happy RCJWKNuyear

How the heck did KU NOT win the title? • Dec 30, 2014 10:01 PM

I saw the same list. Pretty depressing, Of course, I think the biggest how the heck didn't we win the title in my 30 years of KU fandom was in 1997, which didn't quite fit the since 2000 parameter of his article.

I'd have put the 03 team on top of the list instead of 02 because I thought Maryland was a more formidable foe than Syracuse.

1986 deserves mention as well.

I guess we're not the only ones. • Dec 30, 2014 08:45 PM

Totally unrelated but I just read about and saw how KState blew, and I mean blew, choked, hacked, gagged and puked away a win against SWAC Texas Southern. That team is 2-9 with its two wins against KSU and Michigan State!

I guess we're not the only ones. • Dec 30, 2014 06:38 PM

If you don't click the gist of his letter to the editor, which is what this 'story' is about, states that Kentucky's extremely physical style of basketball, smothering the opposition needs to be stopped. He didn't mention their stockpiling of talent, but I'm sure that was behind the story.

Belmont vs Butler now FoxSports 1 • Dec 29, 2014 05:43 PM

Did we lose to Belmont? I don't recall that game.

Tarik Black waived by the Rockets... • Dec 29, 2014 05:20 PM

Cole has put up some monster numbers with NY. 8-9 shooting yesterday with 7 boards and 19 boards the night before. Alas, his team totally sucks, so it hasn't led to wins unfortunately.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays • Dec 25, 2014 06:06 PM

Thanks Lulu! We have a nice little virtual family here. The funny thing is most of us could pass each other on the street and not even know it! Maybe it's better that way. All we talk about is Jayhawks related, no politics, nothing else. We may have other sports allegiances that would separate us, but we wouldn't know it.

Secret to UK's Recruiting? • Dec 24, 2014 04:54 PM

I'm afraid it will go on until....

  1. The NCAA stops it.
  2. Teams adapt to the Kentucky strategy.
  3. Cal gets tired of talking to tall 18 year olds.
  4. The NCAA uncovers a cheating scandal.
  5. Kentucky secedes from the union.
  6. Kentucky fans tire of it. Seriously. Do you want your entire team made of OAD's every year? I guess if it delivers NC's, but there's got to be some sane Kentucky fans out there who don't like players leaving after one year.
  7. Kid begin to wisen up (fat chance) that if you go to Kentucky you'll sit on the bench half the game while playing major minutes at just about any other school in the country.
  8. @jaybate-1.0 goes on a hunger strike until the NCAA does something about.
  9. @drgnslayr uses up his remaining eligibilty and infiltrates the Kentucky program as a mole and uses wealthy donors to funnel money to UK players and then blows the whistle. At his press conference he peals off his UK shirt revealing a KU shirt. He moves onto his next target, Duke and uncovers their slush fund for referees and Dick Vitale.
  10. Kentucky thinks they can beat NBA teams and the entire program goes pro.

@wrwlumpy

I don't know if it's more than usual, but there have been some stunners this year, especially if you're in Michigan. NJIT and 0ne of the directional Michigan schools beat U of M in consecutive games. Then MSU went out and lost a home game to a SWAC school Texas Southern.

I like your perspective. Losses hurt, but it's only a stupid game where the 1%ers of height run around in shorts and try to get a ball through a hole. And sometimes they can jump and throw the ball through the hole with two hands. Then they run by the guy they dunked on and scowl at him. What a great game!!

My all time best sports memory was being a senior at KU in 1988. Every year after that as KU bowed out of the tourney I comforted myself with the memory of '88 and said only to myself, as no one else would listen, "you can't take '88 out of my mind".

Who is responsible? • Dec 23, 2014 07:42 PM

@drgnslayr

I too, like you, have experience at the next level of basketball. I scored two points for the Emmaus Eagles, a tiny college in Iowa that had no gym at the time. So I know what I'm talking about!

Last nights game in one play. Perry (I think) comes down with a board, gets it knocked loose from behind, may have been a foul on them, but that's immaterial. The ball is on the floor. Jamari (again I think) reaches over to pick the ball up like I reach over to pick up my shoes when my wife nags me to pick them up off the floor. Several other Jayhawks are standing around wondering if they should get involved. They begin to discuss it and decide that Self will applaud their restraint because if they dove in there they might hurt themselves and foul Temple at the same time. Self will be happy for their wisdom.

Temple gets the ball and decides while those Jaybirds are standing around looking nervously at coach whose face is redder than Jayhawk red, that they would push the ball up and score another uncontested basket.

So a Temple team which lost to St. Joseph, which lost to Fairleigh Dickenson )and to Gonzaga by 50), which lost to Columbia, which lost to Stony Brook which lost to Canisius, beats our disinterested team by thirty points or so.

We have the right to be pissed, yes @nuleafjhawk you can say that!

KU how cold • Dec 23, 2014 05:00 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

I had it on the DVR, didn't know the result. When we got it to 6 it was looking good. About 3 minutes later I started to fast forward the game and couldn't believe my eyes.

KU how cold • Dec 23, 2014 02:38 PM

@Blown

But you couldn't have turned it off at halftime because of our three point shooting. We were 5-10 at halftime. I applaud your prescience in turning it off, but it had to be because of our horrible ball management and ineffectiveness in the paint.

My mood wasn't helped while watching the Badgers game and hearing Bill Walton say Calipari is a class act.

I just returned from the LSU-College of Charleston game. LSU dominated C of C just like Temple did us. It was no different.

I don't know how we can go out to Georgetown and beat a good team like them, and not even threaten a bad team like Temple.

The only good news is no one from this team is going to turn pro unless they're fools.

@JayHawkFanToo But we are talking mainly about offensive numbers and their defense is quite poor. Wherever you got those numbers see what their defensive stats were.

Why I try not to get excited over players' breakout games.

Yes, like all of you I've wondered about Hunter and his lack of playing time. In a month if Hunter is still having games like this, then I'm excited, primarily because it's helping our team.

Lafayette, as you've also pointed out, is probably as bad of a team as we'll see all year. Hunter didn't break out in the holiday tourney, or in the last week against GT or Utah. Maybe, you'd say, he didn't have the chance to break out.

I've seen too many breakout games lead to a giant letdown. Josh Selby comes to mind. I want to say it was against UCLA in which he starred. Worthy opponent indeed, but we waited, heck are still waiting, for him to do it again.

So go out and prove it wasn't a fluke Hunter. Tonight. Against a worthy opponent.

Kelly, while we're on the topic, you just had a breakout game. You were supposed to have a breakout game against UCSB based on your credentials at least. Let's see another 20 pointer tonight.

Wayne, you've had some breakout games. More please.

The video link you titled "Bobby Knight's thoughts on Cal" took me to the Cal/chaney argument.

Do you have the link for Knight?

By the way, I'm pretty sure there are rules in place even for OAD's that they just can't drop out when the season is over. The school would be sanctioned if they did. I thought I heard that somewhere.

Alexander ankle turn? • Dec 21, 2014 10:26 PM

He just landed awkwardly. No contact with other players. He looked like he was in agony, but never left the game. I haven't heard anything since.

I always liked Chaney for what he accomplished. He, like Self at Tulsa and what's his name at Xavier, were able to make a upper mid major feel like a feared major when we were playing them. I'm pretty sure a year or two ago we stomped them pretty good, but that's not the norm with Temple and I'm guessing won't be the same tomorrow.

Chaney managed to do it with lunch bucket type players. I can't think of Temple players who made it to the league, although I'm sure there were some. I know I could look it up but that would negate my point. He did it with guys who were not hyped recruits but who would be bench warmers at many other places. That is the definition of a coach. And Chaney was a coach.

I like Paul taking over a team some day. Kirk too.

Oubre Party!! • Dec 21, 2014 02:26 AM

Great outside shooting although @Jesse-Newell kept pointing out Lafayette's perimeter D is very suspect. I'd like to see the same type of performance from Kelly against Temple before I'm getting all googoo eyed over him and Hunter for that matter too.

Frank on the other hand has won me over with his outstanding play against good and poor competition.

@Jaybate, I just saw that TRob played 27 minutes tonight in a 3OT win. He has barely been sniffing the court. Didn't produce a whole bunch in that time however.

@Crimsonorblue22 I watched that game too, primarily because I'm a Bulls fan. Was surprised to see Cole play so much. Was fun to watch.

Duke totally impressed me against Wisconsin. Really good team.

Notice our disdain for Kentucky is so deep that it actually has us semi-pulling for Duke? Ugh, gasp cough.

Our worst nightmare would be it comes down to Kentucky-Duke and they have another 1992 Christian Laetner type ending. We'd never hear the end of it, the greatest shot over part 2 or whatever.

@DoubleDD Well, my wife was with me, so you know, I really couldn't!

@drgnslayr

This was the whole point of my "I'm done" rant a few weeks back. I hate it that our great sport has been relegated to let's cheer against Kentucky, but that's what it is. I'm sure fans of every program out there that might have a chance this year is cheering against Kentucky, and short of a Misery winning, would rather see anyone win other than Kentucky.

As for Kentucky fans, I always thought they were annoying, usually from reading message boards on game stories. Well then I attended the championship game in New Orleans and my opinion grew worse. I actually saw a woman wearing a T-Shirt that said "This bitch bleeds Kentucky blue" I know we probably have a few wack jobs that are fans of our team too, but I would be willing to bet what's in my stocking that you would never see a KU fan wearing a trashy T-Shirt like that.

Now we did meet some decent Kentucky folks, but then in come 6 kids from uk into the row right below ours in the nosebleed seats. Not a Kentucky section, just fans from both teams mixed throughout. The idiots stood the whole game. I asked them to sit, and this kid, I'm old enough to be his father mind you, tells me if I want to watch the game that I can watch it on the big screen. Those seats are steep and boy did I just want to 'accidentally' push him down, but that would have made me like them. We did find some empty seats from which I could act like a crazy old man watch Lamb three point us right out of the game.

LAFAYETTE LEOPARDS - EASTON PA. • Dec 19, 2014 03:41 AM

@jaybate-1.0

'88 I seem to remember that year. A month before I walked down the hill in cap and gown, (as a matter of fact with someone that was 14 inches taller than me 5 people behind me in line) I was also in the same football stadium celebrating a huge win!

LAFAYETTE LEOPARDS - EASTON PA. • Dec 19, 2014 12:34 AM

LAFAYETTE LEOPARDS - EASTON PA. • Dec 18, 2014 11:32 PM

Lumpy, loving the pics of each campus.

As for the game, tryouts are on for the Big12 season. Who's going to step up beside Mason, Perry, Selden and Jamari? Seems like there's some openings up for grabs to become the usual starter.

The Beauty of Basketball • Dec 16, 2014 01:28 PM

And just to the east of KU they think it's one acting as five.

Be Honest • Dec 16, 2014 01:25 AM

I shared my thoughts in the aftermath of the Kentucky game in my post "I'm done". Obviously I'm not done! I am enjoying this team more than last years version for sure, 72-40 notwithstanding. One thing I'm a little excited about, and it involves next year more than this year is this: Even though there's signs we're meshing as a team, I don't see anyone rising into the OAD, or even leaving early discussion. Which means, we don't lose any significant pieces, unless Perry goes which I have a hunch he'll stick around.

If a male basketball player has an operation to become a female basketball player and wrote about it, would her book be called "Basketball Without Balls"?

@icthawkfan316 I had the same feeling that HEM had. It FELT like we were trying to pound it inside, especially after a few 3's early didn't fall. Maybe the stats don't back that up as much as my feeling as you've pointed out, but still it felt like it was happening.

It also felt like we got pounded inside by them in the 2nd half. Not sure if the stats back them up, but it sure seemed that way.

Dang KU! • Dec 14, 2014 11:52 PM

I think the good news, the silver lining is that none of our potential OAD's or even TAD's are making them look really attractive to the NBA draft next June. I know some of them can catch fire, but so far i don't see it happening.

@BeddieKU23 A "tuff" team. Since tuff is a sort of volcanic ash, would you like to elaborate on that analysis of yours? :)

I'm very content with my beautiful wife but more wonderful pictures of Utah's campus with the mountains in the background would be just fine with me!

Speaking of mountains, Utah's 7 footer concerns me today given our problems with height. Yahoo spoke highly of him recently, already an NBA prospect apparently.

Speaking of NBA BMAC is turning into a star in Sacramento, Wiggins is starting to feel it and Kieff is playing great basketball, while 'Cus is productive off the bench.. TRob is getting a whole bunch of DNP's, Withey and Cole are averaging 2-4 minutes per game. Mario's numbers are career high type numbers since they got rid of someone they called the King. Darrell's enjoying a nice career rebirth in mile high Denver, and our ageless Jayhawks Kirk and Paul keep pluggling along on very competitive teams. Even Drew has found his way onto the Wizards roster. Tarik appears to be starting with the Rockets which amazes me. They're one of the NBA's leading teams.

Speaking of teams, why do my teams always seem to play at the same time? Seems to happen a lot. Well, I'll be watching the Jayhawks today as Wiscy plays Nichols St. of Louisiana.

Speaking of Louisiana, my son returns home today from college in Chicago, so I will not even be able to watch the 2nd half of the game except on the DVR.

And right on cue Indiana blows a 12 point second half lead to Eastern Washington, the school with the red football field and loses on their hallowed home court.

Interesting take JB.

I think another angle is the lack of elite coaches. Bo is knocking on the door of elite. Izzo is there. Matta is knocking on the door. After that it drops way off. Crean is still smarting from losing to KU 70-30 in the final four in 2003. You think an elite coach is losing a game by 40 in the 2nd half in the final four? Me neither.

Matt Painter has taken Purdue down the road to irrelevancy. I really had hopes for him.

The jury is out on Pitino at Minny. Tough place to win though.

Groce just can't get kids to come to Illinois either, @justanotherfan pointed the recruiting problems out wonderfully.

Matta has a sort of Rick Barnes complex, good/great recruiter, but x's and 0's not so much.

Beilein almost won a ring a couple years back but didn't survive some auspicious officiating. I think that's as close as he gets to cutting the nets.

Turgeon we're all pulling for, the jury's out, but I'd be surprised if he makes it.

But the recruiting is the big thing. Cliff would not have been able to step foot in the city of Chicago if he had pulled off his hat trick 20 years ago. The depression of Detroit and Flint I'd guess is a big factor in Izzo's pipeline being less than full. He barely had to recruit. But the key to the Big1G is Chicago which produces enough talent to stock many teams and they leave for other leagues.

I was checking out Tarik and BMac last night, who were playing against each other, and there's Patrick Beverly for Houston, scoring a bunch of points. A graduate of Marshall HS in Chicago who escaped the city/conference and went to Arkansas of all places. The U of I always used to get those guys. Brunson is the latest, from the suburbs of Chicago to Villanova. What the heck is wrong with these kids? Villanova? Really?

I hope it comes back. Football doesn't matter to me that much, but basketball does and it sucks to see the league being outperformed nationally by all the major conferences.

@JayHawkFanToo You're right. We (I'm a Big1G fan) had success in the ACC challenge, but our top teams, Wisconsin, MSU, and I think OSU all lost. So we're taking some major hits right now.
