Evan Daniels saying Memphis is the team to beat. Very interesting re: Hampton...
I actually just popped in to talk about this. I'm EXCITED.
If Daniels is saying Memphis is the team to beat for Hampton - - then why are you EXCITED?
Daniels is saying Memphis is the heavy favorite for Boogie Ellis, another PG. So maybe the Memphis staff is thinking they may not land RJ.
people more concerned about Duke getting back in then RJ going to Memphis
I wouldn't be. RJ in effect cut dook when Tre Jones came back.
This and adding Stanley I feel. Now if somehow Duke gets added again, then I'd be super worried but I don't think they are a player in this one currently.
@FarmerJayhawk I don't think we are getting Tucker or Silvio back for that matter but I would absolutely take that. Probably the dream scenario.

@jayballer73 Exactly my man.
Some yikes news on Caleb Lohner from the same poster with the RJ Hampton info re other players on RJ's AAU team.
"The only player of significance is Caleb Lohner, who recently transferred to the same school that Enaruna goes to in Utah. Lohner's dad makes Marty Frankamp look like a saint. Tom Izzo point blank told the dad, "if you are going to bad mouth his high school coach, then he can't play for me," and quit recruiting him."

Rumor Admon Gilder (A&M grad transfer) visiting early next week...
Interesting. Mentioned him earlier as a guy I'd be interested in. Does this mean we are out on someone else?
@Marco I'm flip flopped with you on Braun and McBride, but I feel ya overall for sure.
@Bosthawk He's been widely viewed as one of the top guard prospects in HS for years. Moreso in the Wiggs/Josh vein than Grimes.
Just tons of good vibes and stories. Seems like KU is firmly in the lead here.
Feeling even better about landing RJ now.
We'd have to add a Cali guy to the Assistant coaching staff.
@justanotherfan People love pointing to outliers like Baker, Shamet, Harding etc but as mentioned even if you somehow hit on all those guys (and remember we wanted Mitch Ballock but he wanted to play early) it wouldn't be enough to field the kind of teams KU fans are accustom to or even typical MSU squads. KU simply has to recruit nationally which limits the pool in ways @Kcmatt7 has mentioned previously.
And yeah excellent point about MOKAN. MOKAN and Sunrise being Nike is super not great. There was a MOKAN coach that HATED KU. Given KU has landed some MOKAN kids recently, maybe he is gone? I don't follow super closely.
@Kcmatt7 Agree.
And some people don't like that comment about a coach that lets his players play. BUT GUESS WHAT DIDN'T HURT LIKE I MENTIONED EARLIER? Oh right Grimes playing over 30mpg despite SUCKING OUT LOUD and being the worst rotation player on the roster. It didn't really change the trajectory of last years team much and WILL pay dividends in recruiting down the road.
@justanotherfan Thanks. Just looking at their rosters you see so much of their player base is from that area, or Nike funnels like Sunrise in Wichita.
Looking at their upcoming roster which many believe to be one of the best next year.
Cassius Winston - Detroit MI
Mark Watts - Detroit MI
Kyle Ahrens - Ohio
Marcus Bingham - GR MI
Xavier Tillman - GR MI
Foster Loyer - Clarkston MI (I have family including MSU grads and current students from here and this one was over from birth, he would have walked on I firmly believe)
Gabe Brown - MI
Connor George - MI
Aaron Henry - Indiana
Thomas Kithier - MI
Josh Langford - A big outlier, one would assume Nike helped.
Malik Hall - Nike funnel but also was in Illinois before going to Sunrise so fairly local as well.
GR = Grand Rapids which is literally an hour drive from MSU's campus.
Izzo barely leaves the state and this roster is fantastic. KU could never come close to this even if they somehow hit every hidden gem type from KS and the KC metro (which is impossible btw).

Honestly, I would call SDS a traditional 4 rather than a pure 5.
I could buy this. It's a dying position is the thing. I hope he is in fact able to defend very mobile and quick college 4s. Hell, I hope he gets to play for KU...
Super hot RJ info on the Phog from a guy down in Texas.
Highlights: Duke essentially chose Stanley over RJ. The coach this guy knows felt Duke was his first choice and dream school. Another poster backed this up. Thanks for derping, Duke. Self was behind the reclass talk from the start, he started the talk over a year ago. So, Self being there on the day he announced it, is huge for KU. Last big thing is he believes KU will be the choice because playing on the biggest possible stage in America and being a title threat is what matters the most to RJ AND his dad.
Buckle up this is going to get wild.
What are you looking for in a school?
"Just somewhere I can say is home. Somewhere that feels like a family. I want the coach to let us play through mistakes, play early and often. If a coach lets me do that, I think I’ll be fine."
On Kansas
"Kansas, they’ve been on me hard since my freshman year. Coach Self is a great guy. Him and coach Jerrance Howard have really talked to me the hardest about reclassifying in the 2019 class. They’re really just telling me they’re gonna have a good group of guys around me to play point guard, and off the ball."
R.J. Hampton recruiting prediction
Kansas. The Jayhawks don’t have a superstar recruit already committed for next season, but Hampton would change that. He’d start in the backcourt likely alongside sophomore Devon Dotson to give the Jayhawks a two point guard look reminiscent of the one they once ran with Frank Mason and Devonte’ Graham. Expect the Jayhawks to be a top-10 team in the preseason polls with Hampton.

I don't think Silvio is a pure center at all. God forbid people have slightly different evaluations of a player, but he's got a decent stroke out to 15 and handles it well for a guy who's 6'9 245.
I think it's fine to discuss. People just get so angry about it on the phog. Offensively maybe a bit of a tweener (4.5) I think defensively he is definitely a 5 and you don't want him trying to defend out of the paint much.

@BShark Yeah, unlike most people I was pretty pumped about the signing of Braun and McBride. They coupled with Garrett and Dave will allow us to build depth.
I love McBride's game. Braun has improved his game over the past year so I'm confident he'll develop here.
Above everything I respect that they signed into the teeth of the FBI issues. We haven't seen a single bit of hesitation from them.
Amen.

@BeddieKU23 Dixon will have a tough year regardless of what happens. Then after having the tough year he will have an even tougher one after losing so many players to transfer, and then, and then, and then.
Dixon wears players out like Bill but lacks the same recruiting chops. He's a good coach but will likely never win the league or make the FF due to this.
The attrition of his roster by the end of first semester was impressive. I thought KU had it bad
Self honestly hasn't had a huge purge like the end of this year in awhile. In terms of players transferring out anyway.
This is still all hearsay right?
Marco said:

If both stick around, there is every reason to believe they will be major contributors by their JR year.
@jayballer73 it would crowd the front court and indications are Holyfield wants to start or at least play 25 mpg.
Self had an in-home visit with Greg Brown.
He's busting his ass lately, perhaps rejuvenated?
Marco said:
@drgnslayr we definitely need a solid bench year in and year out, and the only way to achieve that is to recruit solid players that intend to stick around. Those players can be added around and behind one or two five star recruits.
The 2015 class is the one that REALLY got us recently in terms of setting last year up to be bad.
2016 we got Mitch, 2017 Garrett, 2018 Dave and Ochai, 2019 Braun and McBride so far.
This is just talking about players that are expected to be 4 year guys.
BeddieKU23 said:
I really hope we land Holyfield. He's a big need even if De Sousa is back but it sounds like the situations are mutually exclusive. That's unfortunate as I see a good role for him regardless and he'd have the highest exposure at KU if he had professional aspirations after.
Enaruna (if he signs) I don't see playing much as a freshman from what I've seen of him this spring. The potential is there and your hoping that by year 2 he's a factor in the rotation. I hope he sees the benefit of coming here. It sounds like the staff is confident
I think it was @Marco that asked would we rather have Holyfield or Silvio and I think it's a very legit question. Despite posters that get belligerent about it on the phog, Silvio is in fact a 5/C at this level. So if Silvio is back we have 3 PURE 5 men (Silvio, Doke, Dave) which isn't great in 2019 tbqh. Then you factor in that Mitch is a 5 in a 4s body... We could really use Enaruna and Holyfield as both are pure 4s with actual basketball skill. Though I agree Enaruna probably won't see huge tick as a FR.

Everyone in here surely knows I'm pro-Self. But I would like to see us go all-out in a program based on developing players that will stick around. At the level I am talking about, it goes past schools like Virginia and MSU. Lead the nation in player development. Taking players that would only be a long shot of ever going pro and building them into solid prospects at the next level. Doing that while focusing on team chemistry.
Just having a team that is truly based on executing the game at a high level... not just a bunch of guys who bring their extra long arms and athleticism to the game to compensate for marginal fundamentals. I think the current flow into this style of ball is a negative for the game... a game the founder is part of our legacy.
MSU has a much better natural talent pipeline (Michigan and the surrounding area) plus Nike to help them.

Still think he goes to college though. The kids that went to China didn't have a good time.
Yeah China seems like a terrible option. Australia seems much better tbh.

I feel like we are getting Enaruna.
That probably means TJ Holyfield is heading to Illinois to reunite with his old coach. I can't see any way both of those guys would come to KU together.
I feel like Holyfield is more tied to the Silvio decision but we will see. I could see adding Enaruna and Holyfield if Silvio isn't allowed to play.
I think if Silvio has to leave, the dream scenario would be adding RJ, Walker, Enaruna and Holyfield.
Starting line-up
RJ
Dotson
Walker
Holyfield
Udoka
Just enough shooting to get by and insane athleticism.
Ochai and Garrett as the main bench guards. Then the post gets kind of murky. History would indicate Enaruna wouldn't really play.
I feel like we are getting Enaruna.
@justanotherfan This has always been the issue imo.

@Kcmatt7 Silvio not allowed to play, add Enaruna, Holyfield, RJ and Walker would be stellar. Outside of the bad situation for Silvio but I fully expect it.

Enaruna was quoted that he wanted to play a lot right away. Not sure that will happen in Lawrence....depending on whom else signs.
It would suck if we lose another player to Creighton because of this.

@KirkIsMyHinrich we still need Doke to make it through a season to compete with anyone. If we only get a PF and SDS isn't eligible, we are still a bit thin in the frontcourt. I'm guessing we end the season with PF transfer + Dave starting and Mitch first big off bench.
Brutal, but he has been hurt every year soooo not unfair.
