Just saw on ESPN Syracuse will have only 8 scholarship players Saturday as guard Geno Thorpe leaves the program after averaging 6 points in 14 minutes in 6 games this season. So in other words having a short bench won’t be an excuse tomorrow.

Hopefully for the sake of both teams the refs don't have a quick whistle.

@BShark

That's what I think.

He could never compete with Devonte at the point and would have had to settle for "first off the bench."

Sounds like he wouldn't have liked that... causing team distractions for us.

I'm thinking it's possible Devonte goes pro if we land Young. Either way I think Young would start, but wouldn't get the shot volume he wants.

Some early season stats • Dec 01, 2017 04:26 PM

Young made the right decision for himself.

He has two more games today and it's been pretty easy to find his stats so I'll be sure to post them. It's been more difficult to find stats for McCormack as he doesn't have a twitter account and while I follow Oak Hill accounts they haven't been too active about it.

Looks like Grimes continues to put up big numbers

Yeah, in the 21 point game he also had 12 ast and 10 reb.

2 games for Grimes today. 21 in a win and 38 in a loss.

@BeddieKU23 Well since Draftexpress was basically bought by ESPN and turned into an Insider, that's what we get.

Boooo ESPN.

I just can't see Coach bringing on a player just for practice - We have enough practice players since we can use both the Lawson's and Cunliffe for that -I think he brings him on to fill in spot minutes for foul issues with Doke until Preston wither comes back OR De Sousa gets here. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Yeah we have plenty of players for practice. It sounds like if he can contribute he will be kept around, if not, no big deal.

Billy • Nov 30, 2017 03:48 PM

Because it is what he and his mom plan to do. He will play in Europe if he has to. There is not a possibility of a second year at KU this is similar to Cheick.

Billy • Nov 30, 2017 03:12 PM

Matt Scott is now shooting from the hip I feel pretty good this will be resolved in a favourable manner.

One thing is for sure.... if Billy has hopes of leaving school for the NBA this spring, he'll have to earn his stat line against better teams.

Kind of makes me wonder if this situation has put a hitch in Self's recruiting plans.

What if BOTH Doke and Billy want to return next year?

It's starting to already look obvious that our 4-guard offense is going bye-bye. I have to admit I will be sad if that happens.

Preston will leave anyway. I think Self has all the bigs signed for next year that he would want.

Next year's team won't really have the shooting prowess to play a bunch of 4 out 1 in. We will be back to opposing teams clogging the paint against us. It will be kind of an odd situation. One of our better shooters will be Dedric, a forward.

As good or as bad as any. Sometimes he gets it right and sometimes he does not. The only people with the inside scoop are Coach Self and staff and there are saying nuthin’.

I believe he has good legit sources within the program but of course people can get lied to anyway. Like Tarc said he was coming here for example. The only thing I really didn't like was how he handled the Trae Young recruitment.

@FarmerJayhawk you hear anything?

Probably has similar sources (or the same) as Matt Scott. Sounds like this will be cleared up soon.

Billy • Nov 30, 2017 01:56 AM

:coffee: :newspaper:

Vick and Garrett should look nice in the high post against that zone.

The best thing to do with this thread is not take it seriously.

"Self said told me now James Sosinski of the KU football team practiced one day and will practice the rest of the week and see if he can help the team. He could be a practice player or actually join the team."

41 for Grimes tonight.

@jaybate-1-0 :rofl:

Promise I'm not overreacting to about 1 1/4 worth of games. :joy:

Langford • Nov 29, 2017 01:22 AM

I agree the philosophy will change back a bit due to roster construction but I also still think ideally you add another shooter. Might not be possible though, we're going to be pretty loaded.

DeSousa • Nov 28, 2017 08:42 PM

If Preston comes back for his SO year I will delete my account. :joy:

@jayballer54 I was just saying not paying attention to the chicken man is probably the best bet. Though your post did crack me up.

@DoubleDD

Part of the reason he's trying to enroll early is the fact that De Sousa will have completed 8 semesters of HS by end of the December so he can't play for IMG anyway. He'd have to sit until the fall to play again and it sounds like he doesn't want to do that if he can join early. It sounds like they don't expect him to be here 4 years so Silvio isn't worried about losing the half semester he would forfeit. If he doesn't play this season much for whatever reason he certainly has a leg up towards next season.

Yeah when you read the quotes from his guardian, there is no way he is sticking around to graduate. On the bright side he also isn't really planning to be OAD either.

I'd lean towards 2 (so 1 and a half I guess) years. It would make a lot of sense given 2019 recruits KU wants to take in and guys that should still be on the roster for sure like McCormack. A JR season wouldn't shock me though.

@JayHawkFanToo @justanotherfan I would be shocked to see Trob or Cliff on a NBA from here on out, as stated everyone wants a stretch 4 or a true 7 footer center down low. No room for guys that can’t handle the ball and hit outside shots the power forward is pretty much dead in the NBA and our 4 guard line up from a high low guru in Self is proof it’s dyeing in college.

+1

Even next year when we are looking at going back to playing 2 bigs, the main 4s are going to be Dedric and KJ.

Pro Jayhawk updates • Nov 28, 2017 05:28 PM

Man, I know it's listing anyone that was ever at KU but Micah Downs is a rough inclusion.

Langford • Nov 28, 2017 05:27 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I would too but he isn't coming back if he keeps playing at his current level. However we also haven't really played anyone but UK yet...

Langford • Nov 28, 2017 05:24 PM

justanotherfan said:

He's a really pure shooter that should be able to play both ends. He would pair very nicely with Dotson and Grimes, two talented slashers.

Agree! I think if Vick leaves and KU misses on Langford adding a good perimeter shooter becomes a big priority. Grimes is an okay shooter. We already know Garrett is rough around the edges there, and so is Dotson. Moore is the only plus shooter and he was 35% his first year at Cal. Maybe a grad transfer would be the best option compared to a HS recruit that can shoot but lacks a bunch in other areas. However a grad transfer might be a tough sell with Dotson, Grimes, Garrett, Moore and Cunliffe all on the roster. I'm not a huge fan of Cunliffe but when he is your 5th guard that's preeeeetty decent.

Man now that I think about it we have been insanely spoiled with good three point shooters lately.

I have no feel for how good most of the teams in the country are, including KU. Every team just looks really fragile right now, either because of depth, talent, discipline or something else. I have a feeling that this is one of those years where it is going to take a while for teams to sort themselves and the true contenders/pretenders reveal their nature.

Duke is the favourite imo. After that it's wide open.

DeSousa • Nov 28, 2017 05:20 PM

Silvio definitely knows how to play ball.

@dylans Redshirting him only makes sense if he plans to exhaust his eligibility. I don't see that being the case.

I'm a little less bullish than @BShark on this one. I think he plays before the first of the year, but it may not be imminent.

You are probably right. 6 or 9 games makes the most sense.

KU Nova home and home • Nov 27, 2017 07:58 PM

@jayballer54 You missed this thread my man.

@Crimsonorblue22 He got the message when Garrett started over him.

@mayjay I'm glad Malik is on the current team if that wasn't clear.

When you are desperate for talent you end up with guys like Malik and Preston. Now that they are Jayhawks I am pulling for them but suffice to say I'm thrilled that recruiting is going so well this year. To a lesser extent I suppose you could include the Lawsons in the "troubled talent" infusion but Dedric has been on the straight and narrow since the practice incident and KJ has actually been great the whole time after leaving Memphis.

Think about it, Bagley was supposed to still be in High School...maybe as a teacher? He looks like he is at least in his mid 20s. Only other player I have seen that looked older was old man Oden.

They are the reason we still get carded in our 30s. :joy:

FarmerJayhawk said:

He's a true combo, but I think his PG skills are getting better. Wouldn't surprise me to see him on the ball mostly when Dotson is out, plus Moore is more of a scoring guard. Jacobs is going to be really good too. Already has a great first step and has a great motor. Just needs to develop as a PG and get a more consistent jumper.

Yeah, to me Jacobs is a guy that doesn't start year one but is a beast years 3-4.

Dotson will start next year but he has a ways to go on his shot.

Next year intrigues me in general. I would expect some early losses but by the end of the year we could be the best team.

@JayHawkFanToo the Cunliffe lowballing is a thing before he has even played a game for us.

I might just be the president of the anti-Cunliffe club I have to admit. Just based on what I've heard/read and my own observation from watching him play.

That said like @BeddieKU23 he will be good to have around just as another body. Honestly it would have been really nice to have him in these early games so as not to have to play starters in garbage time.

Justin Roberts (Norm's son) • Nov 27, 2017 02:39 PM

Plays for Toledo, so that's neat. Only gets about 7 minutes a game.

Billy • Nov 27, 2017 02:28 PM

I'm thinking he plays in the Syracuse game but not against Toledo. Could hear something as early as today.

Holiday Hoops • Nov 27, 2017 01:08 PM

@KirkIsMyHinrich Agree, it's even doubly true with Duke. They are so good inside. Their only real shooting threat is Tripper. So if Tripper is making threes or...even worse some of their other guys are hitting threes just forget about it.

Also wow UNC...didn't break 50... MSU is tough to deal with.

I was on the fence between the two. Def don't deserve to be called the Chiefs right now lol.

@jayballer54 Billy is OAD because Billy and his mom want him to be OAD, not because he is ready, IMO.
