The soft press/trap was a guess but I believe it was one Wright used in 16 on us that slowed the game down and forced turnovers and annoyance. They probably don't have the horses to do that without Moore but we should expect something unexpected since I cannot imagine Wright trying to guard this KU team without trying to take something away we normally like to do. Maybe he doesn't change a thing because their defense has been just as stingy. Not having Moore to defend Agbaji is the most significant advantage I think we gained out of his unfortunate injury. If I'm Agbaji I'm in full assassin mode from the jump. A shark smelling blood, their defense will be adjusting to how they can guard our stuff especially on an individual basis.

I really hope these guys come out swinging from the start.

@Jethro

I don't know about that but I can see why you'd say that. Right now one is going to be a 1st round pick and the other (Wilson) may not get drafted at all (depending on when he leaves).

I think Wilson's ticket to changing NBA minds is to come back another season, take on a bigger role & in the offseason improve his shooting form/shot preparation & work on becoming an even better athlete/defender. He really is a below the rim player on offense but you watch him board on defense and he's a really good athlete at times. He's still reaching his ceiling imo and I'd like to see it continue in a KU uniform

Chip and Pace... β€’ Mar 31, 2022 10:50 AM

@drgnslayr

We have tremendous respect for Wright and his ability to coach up his team. They present a challenge, their tendencies on the court is a bit different then we are used to facing. He outcoached Self in 2016 with how he guarded Perry Ellis. In 2018 that wasn't coaching, we just caught a juggernaut of a team.

This Nova team doesn't have the same talent running up and down its roster and they just lost a significant part of their success to injury. Moore's a complete player on both sides especially defensively where he would have gotten the Agbaji assignment. He was a primary ball handler, a solid rebounder for his position, a skilled playmaker for others and a big shot maker.

I don't think this Nova team can play any slower offensively, they get 30 seconds. It's on defense where I wouldn't be surprised defensively if we saw the soft 3/4 to 1/2 court trap that falls back into their main d just to make KU waste clock. I think that makes the most sense strategically to slow the game on KU's end after made baskets or dead ball situations. If KU's defense is able to key in on their tendencies and force Nova into misses KU is going to run & that's a game they cannot get into. So I think there's a lot of pressure on Nova to muddy the game up while I think if KU is in attack mode when they get the chance and can execute its going to be interesting.

I'm always worried about the 3 ball especially against Nova given the history & knowing they rely so heavily on it. Our defense has been its best in the tournament and I have confidence they can force Nova into misses. KU has survived a good handful of teams making 3's all season long. I really do think these guys are locked in on that end right now. Arguably our best attribute so far in the tourney has been making the other team play poorly. Self's kinda ball.

McDonald's All American game thoughts β€’ Mar 30, 2022 04:45 PM

@jayballer67

Yeah I wasn't focused on the score as much as other things. Udeh's defense is ahead of his offense but that's fine. Early on his role isn't going to be like Dave or Doke's were as upperclassmen. But I was impressed with how big he is compared to the others on the court & how he ran the court. He looked like a great fit for Self to mold over the coming years.

Dick didn't stand out in a game where his team was pretty awful. Guys just hunting shots and doing whatever they wanted to. Once he passed it to someone it never came back his way. The East guys seemed to take their defense a lot more serious. I loved Gradey's size, handles, passing & he's a tremendous fit for this team next year. He's going to play a lot.

Tremendous potential in the class. A+ athleticism across the board, big, length at each size, physically mature. Gradey is the most skilled followed by Rice. The two big's I'm not worried about developing it's just going to take time. But I hope all get to play next year and stick around long enough to become what we think they could be here.

Jr yr highlights right? He has slimmed down this yr

Chip and Pace... β€’ Mar 30, 2022 12:20 PM

Interesting enough KU gave up 9 or more 3's defensively in 10 games this year and they didn't lose 1 of them.

Chip and Pace... β€’ Mar 30, 2022 12:17 PM

Also Nova made 10+ 3's in 14 games this year. They made 13 against Delaware but have only made 29% (22/74) in the last 3 games against better competition.

Chip and Pace... β€’ Mar 30, 2022 12:02 PM

@AsadZ

46% of their shots are from 3 (20th nationally). However that was with Moore who made 80 on the year on 6 attempts per game. Moore was their primary ball handler as they put Gillespie off ball lately to save his knee.

Gillespie - 7.1 attempts pg - 59% of made shots from 3.

Daniels- 4.4 attempts pg - 49% of made shots from 3.

Samuels- 2.75 attempts pg - 19% of made shots from 3.

Slater- 2.5 attempts pg - 29% of made shots from 3.

Surprised on Miguel but the other two were easy targets.

McDonald's All American game thoughts β€’ Mar 30, 2022 11:47 AM

Anyone watch the game last night?

Only watched most of the first half

Gradey hit a 3, couple steals, active defensively. Appears to be a high level passer as well. He's every bit 6'7. Hopefully we can get 2 years out of him at KU.

Udeh had a lob dunk and was very active defensively at the rim and had at least 1 steal playing his man straight up. However he's a PROJECT at the free throw line. Air-balled his first so badly it reminded me of Brady Morningstar. After making his first attempt on another 2 shot sequence he again air-balled it. His form needs work. He can run the floor well for a 7 footer (better then Dave/Doke) have in the past at the 5 spot. Mostly just screened and rolled to the basket. Love his potential in a few years.

Other thoughts-

I know its been 2 years since they had this game but this 22 class looks really good. The athleticism and length really stood out. Dillon Mitchell going to Texas is a problem athlete. He's going to be the best athlete in the conference and just glides to the rim and really knows how to finish. Keyonte George is also a high rising guard with a ton of skill going to Baylor and he'll play a lot immediately. Morris the other Texas signee in the game looked like a talented guard prospect as well, tremendous size for a combo.

The broadcast slobbered over Derek Lively the #1 player going to Duke but I was not impressed. I thought Dariq Whitehead who won the MVP was the goods. Tremendous athlete with all-around game. He is scary good.

Cam Whitmore was another that really stood out who's going to Villanova. He's going to be a problem in their system. His size and athleticism just pops off the screen. Perhaps the best prospect Jay Wright has signed.

The duo of Nick Smith & Anthony Black at Arkansas looks scary. Big guards who really look like they could compliment each other well. Black has that feel for the game as a distributor and Smith is wired to score and defend.

Kel'el Ware going to Oregon has a ton of long term potential. His athleticism shined big time on some plays like a put back slam off a missed 3 where he caught the ball behind his head and slammed it down. Looked like a plus rebounder and shot blocker as well.

Lots of talent incoming.

"The NCAA has a well-established history of back room deliberations that produce unfair punishments for athletes, coaches, and universities,” Blackburn said in a statement to SI. β€œWith the emergence of new name, image, and likeness rules, it is more important than ever to address the systematic failures that have eroded league fairness. The NCAA Accountability Act will establish much-needed due process and shine a light on unfair treatment from NCAA leadership.”
