@BeddieKU23 You don't think every coach has told recruits why would you go play for a team that is not going to be able to play in the tournament. I 100% believe it affected the 2019 class and there is no doubt it has affected 2020.

Absolutely its impacted both cycles. I just think the headlines will really scare off any recruits for the fall at minimum now. Could be overreacting here a bit but I'm sure the national chains will pick the story up and everyone will know

Thanks. Will be interesting to see if that one goes anywhere.

@jayballer73

I like how this one is trending. I personally would like to see him end up a Hawk.

Staff has been into see him a few times, the move to Oak Hill & having Dave on the team as an alum can help.

I know KK is ranked lower then some other targets but the film I've seen looks solid, personally think he's a bit underrated and the move to Oak Hill will give him plenty of visibility to possibly rise in the ranks by the end of his Sr year. He could end up a high to middle 4 star player when its all said and done.

He is a solid 2 way player with a rep for being a quality defender already. Would be interesting having a southpaw PG on the team.

KU is his first official for late night. It's not going to get any better then that wherever else he goes. Hopefully he loves the visit

I'm attending my first Jayhawk game December 14th (bummed its not in Allen) but falls on the same weekend as a Chiefs/Broncos game which I'm also going to. Just wondering if anyone knows when they typically go on sale, trying to plan ahead!

@dylans

Duke with Okafor/Jones/Winslow won the title with freshman fueling the team.

There's enough evidence out there to suggest you can win in several ways. The freshman way has worked although usually there's still a vet or two that plays a big role. Last year was a big thumbs up for the veteran squads.

I think that trend continues into this year if I was making a prediction now. A ton of talent is gone from last year spread throughout every conference. I have a hard time picking 5-10 teams that I think will be good because there was so much roster movement everywhere. No excuses for KU this year with a veteran squad

Just got Lance Ware (PF) & Terrance Clarke- 2021 5 star stud to reclassify to 2020. This in addition to Top 10 Boston Jr & Top 50 SF Fletcher.
Kentucky will probably add 3-4 more as well looking at their likely roster full of guys going in next years draft.

KU needs to make some moves. Everyone else is

Self and Townsend are going to be at Oak Hill today to check in on him as well.

Definitely keeping after him.

His final 7 would make it seem like KU has a great chance if they really prioritized him but I can't say there's any confidence that would actually play out that way given how this cycle is trending. I do think KK would be a good fit at KU. Still trying to figure out why he's a bit underrated to date. The Oak Hill change will probably give a good gauge on whether he's better then his ranking suggest

I'm assuming since we went in-home that KU is interested in him.

This is a strange cycle already. Do you get that vibe?

Super bizarre cycle. There's some rumors flying around that Cade Cunningham isn't done to Okie Lite and that UNC is actually his preferred destination. Only his brother is keeping them in contention. If that's true, could set off a domino effect of Love and/or Thompson getting pushed to KU.

Wow I would not be upset at that scenario playing out.

I don't think we can land both Love/Thompson but if Self did that would be some home run recruiting there. I'm holding onto the belief we need 1 of Love/Thompson/KK and losing on all 3 would be a bad look. We'll see how this plays out

2020 Recruiting • Sep 12, 2019 06:54 PM

@BShark

What do you like about Kalkbrenner? I was really underwhelmed with his tape and thought he was a real project. He just really underwhelmed me as an athlete besides his shot blocking ability. Maybe he's a system guy that gets in some where and really develops. I'll check around to see what else is out there on him.

Bradford is a big dude. Seemed like someone you could mold in this system. His 43% FT shooting though was a turn off.

Muscadin seems like he could be more a 4 then a 5 unless he puts on good weight.

Kstate likes their chances with him.

Really?

I put on his tape. Has some bounce to him, good athletic ability it appears. Can protect the rim. Functional form on his jumper with range so he's a stretch type guy candidate at that height. Will need weight room. Lobs, Pick and Roll upside & stretching the defense seem like things that could translate to KU.

In all, begs the question if we are looking into a player K-St thinks they can land then what does that say about KU's recruiting right now. Has Weber found a good one? There's upside there and some translatable skills.

So based on the BYU decision, how does KU escape? The BYU decision, if I’m looking at this from the KU bubble, seems to pave the way for the results we are fearing. This was activity by a booster.

In fact, Gassnola was much closer to our staff than the boosters in BYU’s situation. Gassnola was relied upon for extensive, hands on recruiting help.

Anyone think the NCAA did this to BYU as a purposeful precursor to the punishment decisions related to the Adidas issues?

Gassnola as we all know doesn’t have to talk to the NCAA. But the NCAA can pay him for info. But he can’t change his story so to speak from sworn testimony, e.g., Self didn’t know. Based on the BYU deal, the “Self didn’t know” defense is a weak one.

I think we have to wait for the potential NOA. It did cross my mind that this decision was in part a chess move to set recent precedent.

There are levels to this as far as potential damage and escape. A lack of institutional control charge would definitely hurt. Any language implicating Self or staff members as complicit with the Preston/De Sousa situations would be headlines we don't want to see.

The part about Gassnola & Addidas is complicated. It wasn't proven in testimony that Gassnola was acting under the "permission" of KU/Self to recruit right? Correct me if I'm wrong there. But the assumption is this was the way things got done and maybe that is the way its done across the country. If they dig into that can of worms I have no idea where that goes.

The NCAA being denied access to information from the case makes it appear like they will hit a dead end. How do you see that decision impacting what may come?

Kalkbrenner has shot blocking skills but you put on the tape and you would be underwhelmed at a lot of things. Think Lucas with even less skill and mobility currently. Purdue has a knack for these types of bigs. The CB seems out of left field from someone who does that from time to time.

@jayballer73

Missing out on Sissoko isn't the sky is falling but he was the type of prospect KU typically gets. He wasn't a can't miss day-1 type guy either. If Silvio/Dave return next season we may not have a grave need for a quality big. I do prefer we get at least 1 though. The Todd sweepstakes could be interesting?

Is it over? • Sep 11, 2019 10:30 AM

@FarmerJayhawk Thompson and Todd would be the dream scenario.

You are right though KU doesn't have to add much so it makes sense to go after high impact players first and foremost.

There's a scenario where KU returns 9 of the 13 players under scholarship right now.

What if Agbaji & Silvio do not return next season and the 5 freshman see minimal playing time due to the core 8 veterans in front of them? That would change what KU needs right? If a Sr Garrett & a Jr McCormack are the upperclassmen left that's a really dangerous situation to be in.

Maybe the staff is recruiting (without success) in an aggressive nature to make sure such a scenario doesn't happen but that's not what it appears to be right now. Boy I hope they can land at least 1 signee in the fall that has high impact potential in year 1 to ease some concerns

@BeddieKU23 Any guesses on how many scholarships will be available in 2020?

4 seems the bare minimum but there is a possibility its 5 or 6 which would really hurt next years team with the way recruiting is going.

3 Seniors leave for sure. Dotson is a near lock as well to jump early.
Agbaji with a big year might have a tough decision to make.

Silvio was out the door if he eligibility wasn't restored & with a big year might have some good options.

I personally think both have better then a 50% chance of returning next season but its too early to tell.

I'm hopeful we'll return a core of 9 guys after the season but anything can happen with transfers today.

2020 Recruiting • Sep 06, 2019 03:24 PM

Ryan over on the phog had a grim view of 2020 recruiting so far. Hearing crickets on what the staff feels confident in or even has a shot with.
It could be all about nothing or spot on.

Very weird that Mady didn't even follow through on his visit.

All the recent blurbs on Caleb Love are pro UNC.

Bryce Thompson isn't ending his recruitment anytime soon.

I would be very disappointed if we are in the spring with no commits.

KU recruited at a very high level for a very long time under Self. There's no question KU has been impacted by the FBI trials and this is the continued fall out. UNC went back to recruiting and landing the Cole Anthony & the Joel Berry's of the world as soon as the NCAA cleared them in the academic scandal. I fear KU won't be back to that level until the NCAA does or doesn't drop the hammer.

I'm not advocating for this but at some point Self may have to shake up his staff. He's been extremely fortunate to have Norm & T but very few elite programs keep the same staffs these days for extended periods of time. Fresh blood may make a difference as well. Again not saying it should happen but its an option the man in charge can make if he felt recruiting misses were a result of that

He did have some very good moments his Jr year. Another year and he might have been a legend to remember. I do think he had that ability in him at the time but he choose the path that was best for him and for that his tenure here was a bit incomplete. Nice to see him sticking around the league. From what I saw of him in the past few years he definitely improved but just falls short of being someone a team makes a priority

Just a hunch. Visiting his "dream school" on a football weekend should be a good atmosphere and good visit for him. I don't know whether they tried to get him to visit later (like for Late Night) or closer to the signing period so I'm just connecting dots that he might be closer to a decision and if the visit goes well might end in our favor.

Having seen the kid play this past year on TV I wouldn't call him elite at anything. He definitely is in the mold of a Diallo or a Oscar Tschiebwe. He is a bit raw offensively but is active and gets up and down the floor, plays above the rim and can definitely alter and block shots at a very good rate. He's definitely someone Self likes to have on the roster
