Pack it up. Times up
Gonna be one of them nights again. Just a poor team away from home
Vick should just find the bus
Agbaji seriously stop trying to take his wallet
Grimes lost. 21 games of it
Nice guarding by Vick. He just stood there
Nice free throw
Good start. LOL
In predicting the score I think you pointed out the recipe for how KU goes on the road and wins this game. Vegas has the line close (a few points) and the O/U low considering K-St is Kenpom's 5th ranked defense while KU's is 13th. Opposite K-St's offense is horrifically rated 177th in the country while KU has been sputtering around the 20's for a while now.
Given all that its no surprise this could be a low scoring game if both defenses are better then their offenses. Buta high scoring game is one way KU can walk out of here with an important win. Speed the game up in similar fashion to what KU did to Texas Tech. KU took a season high 30 3's with its new look 4 guard lineup. Making them goes a long way to speeding up an opponent to keep up. I'm not sure this team is capable of winning a grind it out in the 50's/low 60's type of game. The more possessions in this game the bigger chance KU has to prove to be the better team.
That is assuming most things are equal like fair officiating and being able to quiet the crowd from what should be a rowdy bunch of lunatics. I can't remember the last time KU got anywhere close to a fair officiated game on the road.
Look at the foul difference from KU's road games. KU has been called for 20 more fouls on the road then their opponents. The disparity would be even greater if it didn't account for Baylor fouling KU every possession to extend the game. The +10 from Arizona St, + 8 in Rupp and + 7 at Texas are all laughably a JOKE. Maybe this KU team is just a bunch of foul happy muggers but the eye test says otherwise. The only time the ref's were not a significant factor in a KU road game this year was the dud KU put up at Iowa St.
Keys to winning are pretty much the same every game. Make shots, 50% from the field is always a good baseline no matter where the game is played. It's also assumed that shooting 50% FG's will reflect in the teams 3pt shooting % as well. Rebound/limit 2nd chance points to under 10. Lawson/Dotson stay out of foul trouble which limits the minutes of our backups at those positions which are net negatives. If we can do all those I think we win. If we can do most of them still a good shot.
I didn't include his 17 or 18 hauls which have done nothing outside of Clark who's playing big minutes as a 300+ ranked recruit. Definitely agree, his classes don't get the national attention UK/Duke/KU get.
Also great points about having a coach sustain what we have and living with whatever shortcomings he might have in certain areas that we are used to being strengths at KU.
I think Bennett has adapted some on offense this year since he has a squad that can score. Their 3 main guys are as good as any in the country
To answer your previous question. I don't think a Final 4 would change my opinion on Bennett. A title may sway me but its a Championship. At that point I think it would be stupid to not recognize him if he did win it this year.
I think his group of kids he has developed for this year is his best yet but its taken 3-4 years to get this core group here. He does this every couple of years imo getting his core to the top. I think he's proven he can sustain success year in and year out which is a big selling point for him. Tournament success is still his monkey on his back. That 1st round historic loss will always be there. Imagine the pressure this team will face this year in March to get the first out of the way.
Whatever coach does have to take over for Self it will be incredible pressure.
FYI,
Current 2019 commits
Shedrick- #56, Morsell #58
2016 class
Kyle Guy- #37
Ty Jerome- #44
Jay Huff- #57
Deandre Hunter- #91
Braxton- Key #59 (transferred from Alabama)
2015 Class
Diakite- #32 (enrolled half a semester early)
2014 Class
Salt #356
Everyone but 2018 recruit Clark and Salt ranked outside the Top 100. It does seem like he's done more with less but overall everyone in his rotation besides those two were highly regarded HS prospects
I agree there has to be a change in approach. I feel like I say it monthly but I see no other way around it. My hope is that Garrett, Dotson, Grimes, Agbaji, McCormack, McBride, Braun are the future of how this program will recruit going forward. There are elite talent out there that come without baggage.
I understand the pressure Self and the program is under to be at this incredible level every year. Just look at the amount of players that have left this program early. How valuable would Malik Newman have been to this years squad. How valuable would Josh Jackson had been to last years squad? Wayne Selden the year before that. Kelly Oubre the season before that. Joell Embiid the year before that. The list goes on and on. Dedric Lawson seems like he'll be the next to add to the list of "what could have been had they stayed one more year".
Tennesse doesn't have One and Done's but look how many years it took Rick Barnes to build that program from the ashes. Developed lots of fringe top 100/+100 ranked types to get the season he's having now. They were good last year but this year they are on another level. 2 years ago they were 16-16 FYI. No KU coach would survive a season like that. They are having their perfect storm run right now.
Virginia, another program that relies on program development. Guy, Jerome, Hunter have multiple years in that system playing together. Most of his players were the 25-100 ranked types. They don't have the roster turnover KU has.
I agree that we may have to settle for lower ranked kids to get away from the issues we have right now. Braun & McBride are going to be good here but you wonder if KU would have JRE or some other Top 20 type talents without all the headlines. We could still land Hurt which would be an incredible pull but I'm not expecting we do. I hope I'm wrong there by the way.
I think ultimately KU has to land top talent to keep this going though. Agbaji seems poised to be our leading scorer next year but how improbable has his rise been? Dotson should be our PG for the next 1-2 more years. McCormack will be here 4 years, Garrett as well. I expect both signed recruits to be 4 year players. At some point that group of kids will develop the chemistry that will put KU back at the top like the Tennessee's and Virginia's.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out after this season and what kind of roster we have in the aftermath of all the issues facing KU currently
I don't believe there are other schools that have had as much misfortune as we have lately. Selby, Alexander, Diallo, Preston, De Sousa. Further back we had the CJ Giles, JR Giddens, Darnell Jackson issues. It's been a revolving door of issues over the years. Maybe next year we won't have them. One can only hope this pattern will end
Which makes losing to them really bad as well. Should beat them in Lawrence though, hopefully
I'm a Beard fan as well. He definitely has my respect how he has come into this conference and not only been successful he seems to be very good with the media and how he talks about other programs. Easy to like.
I'm hesitant to go all in on this just yet especially when the axe is looking at us as well. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a ton of dirt on him or just enough to not really give an accurate truth of his wrongdoing. And I expect lawyers etc to make it difficult enough as well
Bennett is a hell of a coach but the stigma of his offense will always follow him. He actually has a group this year capable of scoring. Not sure he has consistently shown that with other teams. With his reputation I wonder if he limits the type of recruits KU could get given all the challenges they already face to land kids. You are right though he instantly would make the program churn on at a high level. I'm still not sold on him as a tournament coach which is another big conversation to have regarding him. Not a perfect coach for KU imo but the list is so small to begin with. I have to think KU goes for someone when the time comes that is relatively young enough to stick around 10-15 years. That itself makes the list smaller
Ankle, they r hopeful he plays against KU
Nike has some real dark ops work to do now
Next yr will be the test without all those seniors but he is an exciting coach. I dont see the flags but its remarkable what he has done. I still prefer Jay Wright but I think Musselman would be a logical contender unlike Wright. I just fail to see a real successor at the moment. We are all looking for the perfect guy but in reality HOF types like Self are just irreplaceable
Forgetting maybe the best option, Nevada's Musselman. What he has done there is truly remarkable in a short time. Modern offense and can recruit.
Yeah it was the lowest scoring effort in the shot clock era. Wake Forest tried to match them getting 37 yesterday.. some real good offenses in that ACC. Fyi 77 players matched 24 points Saturday alone..
This is a pivotal game. I mentioned in another topic that this game could be the one we look back on as the turning point of the conference season (in our favor).
The back 9 isn't easy, 5 road games, ugh. KU doesn't have back to back home games the entire conference season. The Big-12 schedule is a JOKE this year. How did we ever agree to it this way. It's never been scheduled in this manner.
Some teams in the ACC & SEC(North Carolina & Tennessee I'm looking at you) will have 3 home games upcoming in a row. Tennessee has - Mizzou, Florida & South Carolina in Knoxville for the next 8 days. UNC's road is more daunting, NC St, Miami & Virginia but still they get em all at home over the next 2 weeks. Just food for thought.
The two teams at the top, K-St & Baylor have plenty of opportunities to fail. K-St's next 5, 3 on the road, no gimmies. Baylor also has 3 road trips in their next 5. They also play K-St this weekend so someone will have at least 3 conference loses by the end of the weekend. Iowa St also has 3 of next 5 on the road. Whoever survives the next 5 with a winning record will be looking pretty good down the stretch.
Best case Scenario, KU wins on Tuesday and Saturday at home. Baylor and K-St lose at least once. KU is back to sharing the conference lead by Sunday.
I agree about the environment with a young team. They have seen Rupp, Iowa St, and West Virginia now so I expect that this team can play through this at this point. Usually we come into Manhattan locked in loaded over the years. Would be nice to see them bring it on Tuesday
I consider it a longshot they budge now but who knows maybe the media backlash and KU's pressure (from Self & Long's) statements change that. Roll the magic 8 ball, might be the NCAA's decision model
No chance he sticks around and sits another year to play 1. He had Euro offers after last season and I'm sure he can find a way.
The likely scenario is they wait out the appeal to see if they can convince the NCAA to drop some or all of the 2nd year ban. That's the only scenario that seems logical for Silvio to stick around.
a positive trade for Chucky. Even my grandma would be an upgrade at this point
Been wondering if we would offer, kid has had a big senior yr. Fits what we need
77 players had 24 points or more yesterday including Dedric. Its truly epic NC St could only score 24 at HOME
Really good point. I liked putting lawson at the top of the key. We got away from that without Doke but it worked for KU making it impossible for tech to double him
Kansas st has the toughest next 5 imo. KU has historically played well in Manhattan but we will need the guys to have poise and leadership which has crumbled on the road in epic fashion. If KU wins Tuesday they put themselves right in the drivers seat especially since KSU plays Baylor right after us. I think Tuesday can be the chess piece that puts everything in place. We need a marque road win and coming off a charged up win at home its the perfect opportunity. I say this with optimism but I have no idea how much my thoughts will matter in the end
I think it was the perfect storm type of game. Silvio out, Garrett out, losing 2 in a row, being at home. Self said he would find a way to fix the offense. Bottle all those up and the guys had energy and moved the ball, the effort on defense for most of the game was locked in. Making a season high in 3s also helps, everyone in the starting 5 made at least 1. We started off hot continued to lead and had a 20 point advantage at half. From that point they never got closer then 13. Just a great effort. Guys stepped up and the passes and ball movement really caught tech off guard. Do I think its repeatable? At home maybe. Garrett will be out a few games and Tuesday will be a great test to see how amped the guys are still off this Silvio high

FWIW, Seth Davis thinks Silvio plays Saturday. Would be a terrific development.
I'd say Seth was a tad off...
He was at every step of the way. Not surprising
Swoosh reasons
I agree.
Fran called the Texas/Iowa St game and didnt spend every last second on a gameplan to beat the cyclones because he loves them. It was like he is bipolar calling other games.
However Seth Drunkberg had his "Texas Tech's defense is too good for KU segment". I see he is still batting 100% this season and every season when he doubts us. Self must have peed in his cheerios one time. Cant understand his ridiculousness
Yeah you were right, I was wrong and feeling down about what we had saw on the road in the past week, the general downward momentum of this team. But the home cooking and Silvio situation was the perfect fuel. Will it last playing K ST Tuesday who knows. It was an impressive win on multiple fronts, we had Matthew Hurt here and he had to be happy with what he saw
Yeah and it pains me to say but without Garrett things just seemed better. It helps when guys make 3s. This offense was built for guys to make perimeter shots. They played solid defense for the most part as well
At home sure. Plus the Silvio thing gave some motivation. Nice to see though
Blowing the lead quick lol. Good thing its pver
Oh mitch. Grab the ball
Agree with @Crimsonandblue12 hurt has to be impressed
Good thing we up so much
Agbaji is a hell of defender
They are a bad breed
First to 50
Great pass from q to d
Great pass
Jeez
