Personally I would throw a zone defense at Virginia. I think they do an excellent job of executing sets. Its not like Virginia does anything extraordinary to score but they execute so well, they screen well, they cut with purpose and guys share the ball.
Jerome & Guy are stone cold from outside and Hall is a junkyard dog. Hunter, the kid who made the 3 to beat Louisville is a really good young player, he's only 6'7 but bouncy and has an insane wingspan (7'4) which allows him to play the 4 when they go big or the 5 when they want to switch all 5 on defense.
Back to why I would zone Virginia. Because I think it takes them out of their comfort zone. I mentioned execution is a reason why they have been so good. They limit how much guys have to make individual plays, its smart because I don't think this Virginia team is a gifted scoring team. Guy is the one player that can create and they feature him the most but everyone else thrives because of well executed sets. I think it would give KU an edge because scoring on them is extremely difficult. You get forced into their pace because that's what they do. In today's age you think how hard can it be? Watch them and you realize just how locked in guys are. They get loose balls, they get tough rebounds, they force pressured shots. It's not just their starters, its their bench as well.
Guard play would be the reason we'd prevail. Simply having 4 guys who can score. Marcus is coming around as well and honestly he'd fit like a glove defensively on Virginia. Guard play can beat them but it has to be a 1-4 (or 5) commitment.
Doke would be neutralized because I've yet to see a team that ISO's them effectively on the block. Their pack line mentality would stop Doke from catching the ball and powering in. Bagley had some success against them but he's got a wide array of moves and skill that Doke is still developing. We'd be smart to run a lot of pick and roll with Doke at the top of the screen and have him roll hard to the basket. We'd get some lob action out of it or an open shooter in the corner.
As good as Virginia has been in the regular season they struggle in March. I don't see this team being different then past teams that have underachieved. This isn't a terribly experienced bunch either going into the tournament. It's a different beast. I have my reservations about how far they can go
