Dotson is going to need to mature really really fast. We are lacking that settle it down guys point guard.

I do believe Self coaches freshman harder than Cal and K. He puts a ton on them and at times they lose their athletic ability because they are thinking so much. Grimes is at that point right now. He will look better by late January.

I don't buy this. Lineups have zero to do with his lack of ability to lift off the ground or blow by a defender. He lacks the ability to do both.

I've never seen a more hyped guy preseason. If we are waiting for him to "take over" it will be few and far between.

We had a senior point guard. HUGE difference.

I kept my negativity away from this board as much as I could. I never thought this team was going to finish as a top 10 team. I truly think we are a 10-15 type team and yes we could have some issues winning #15.

I know nobody cares but these kids "stuck in limbo", like Silvio, still get a free college education. Imagine any other scholarship recipient breaking a big part of the scholarship agreement and still receiving it.

Watched the IU/Marquette game last night. Man I wish Grimes would drive it like Romeo.

Garrett will play a ton because he plays defense the way Self expects guys to. Remember Self played Oubre less than 10 minutes for 4 straight games the year he was here. Once he picked it up defensively he played much more. Self does not care about high school accolades once you are on his team.

@approxinfinity Not good but this was known about Lawson for a while. Not sure what Self was expecting from him.

8 for 8 was great but I was most impressed by his drive and dunk. He has never driven enough for my taste.

Everyone talking up Duke never mentions that UK started 3 freshmen in the back court and none of them can defend a lick. These freshmen playing against freshmen in games like this also make it easy. That game looked like a pickup game to me. Hardly any offensive sets and ZERO defense on both sides.

I liked seeing Moore and Dotson in together albeit only a few minutes. We will need more than one guy on the floor who penetrates. Vick and Grimes dont really do it enough.

Still would like to see more aggressive drives to the hole especially when his jumper is on.

Ochia in 2 years under Hudy will be a beast. He has that type of build that will fill out easily.

Not saying he won’t be good for us. I’m just thinking his NBA ability. I’d have rather had Romeo Langford.

Agbaji will be a great college player

Grimes may be a 2 year player. I don’t see enough speed and lift for him to play NBA ball. May need to lose some weight

@DanR only Garret and Vick has experience understanding defense at this level and what self expects

The one thing I worry about with this team is the best defensive team might be the worst offensive one. Self may have to just deal with some bad defense to stay in games with a hot opponent. This will really test the “Self has embraced modern ball” theorists.

@DanR he was rated the least athletic at the combine 2 years ago.

I’d love to know if the week before the last exhibition game is a REALLY REALLY tough practice week for the guys. I’d bet Self kills them and sees who responds but it leads to dead legs for this game. Then he lets up for the big game next week and concentrates more on mental stuff.

Guys leaving early sucks. Grimes/Dotson could develop into rush/charmers but won’t get chance. Remember how bad Mario struggled early his freshman year?

This will be a year self has to coach his ass off just to meet normal expectations(big 12 title and 30ish wins) yet the nation has the ultimate expectations(#1 rank).

And we got it

Hope we see Lawson at 5 at some point.
