Yep he should have blocked that one
Not seeing the high low yet and perhaps Self is holding it for Tuesday. I really think self will run a bunch of it with Lawson/doke
I’m foreseeing an Oubre siting for grimes at some point. The athletic freaks that come here get broken down by self early then usually come around. Grimes better respond!
Man we have no identity yet.
The only value in NBA for guys like Doke with no outside offensive game is rim protection. Thing is, Doke isn't quick enough off his feet for that at the NBA level.
I'll take Silvio being done over losing even more from NCAA in some future ruling. Hopefully this is the end. However it's going to hurt recruiting for a season or two. Self and company need to go the prep school route and grab some more Masons and Devonte types.

The teams was very shorthanded last season so that partially explains it. Also, Coach Self is big on defense and player that are willing to play tough defense will see more minutes. Very impressive either way.
10000000% correct.
In 2007-08 Self continued to play Russell Robinson(senior) over Sherron Collins(sophomore). It was all about defense and turnovers, Self's biggest obsessions. Of course as the tournament went on Sherron got more of the minutes.
Agree but if our guards cant show an ability to hit the 3 to provide space than I'd rather have Dedric play the 5 and leave Doke on the bench.
I'm sure I'll get blasted for this but the athleticism on this team is lacking.
-
Grimes failed to secure a couple of rebounds due to lack of vertical leap. He may get up with a running start but he doesn't look explosive from a standing position. He actually looks a tad heavy to me.
-
Dedric will be a skilled below the rim guy. He tested as the least athletic guy at the combine 2 years ago so this is not surprising.
-
Doke always needs space and struggles with fast defenders. Hurt us against Nova and again last night.
-
Vick is athletic but his handles cant keep up. Dvonte and Frank opened a ton up for him.
-
Dotson - seems like the most athletic of the starters.
With that said it doesn't mean you cant win a ton without top level athleticism.

You really thought last year's team could get out in transition better than this one will?
I'm hoping this one will play much faster than last years. I think its just really really early. You could see the nerves with some guys.
It will be fun to watch this team evolve.
I'm going to sound really negative here but...
As great as Lawson looked today this was massively inferior talent. He has an old man game via below the basket with a methodical pace. He will do well in certain match ups but I foresee some serious issues when he goes up against length and speed.
Overall team speed is not great. Maybe I'm used to last years team that was so damn fast and they knew where they were going which made them even faster. Tonight we looked slow.
As for all the depth I firmly beleive this team goes as far as Grimes and Dotson take it. Scary to be that dependent on two freshman guards.
Marcus' shot looks about the same.
Vick's decision making looks about the same.
KJ looks really soft. The kind of soft Self hates. I'd be shocked if he sees much time.
@Crimsonorblue22
Can my $5 go towards our recruits? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
I've always watched the exhibition games on my appleTv with ESPN3 for FREE. Looks like its ESPN+ this time and it costs....UGH
Maybe after Danny left we had to pay the big men to come.:satisfied:
Hope at some point they do not rule we used an ineligible player and the final four banner comes down.
I'm not saying he is dirty. I just presented two articles with what seems like two different opinions.
Violations 'not worth it' to new KU aide
By Gary Bedore
Tuesday, June 8, 2004
Kurtis Townsend, who was hired Monday as an assistant men's basketball coach on Bill Self's staff at Kansas University, worked at California from 1993 to 1997 under two head coaches -- Todd Bozeman, who was fired and sanctioned by the NCAA for rules violations, and Ben Braun, Bozeman's successor.
Townsend never has been accused of NCAA wrongdoing.
"I've asked for and received letters from the athletic directors at Michigan and Cal indicating I never had anything to do with NCAA (violations)," Townsend said. "We were at Michigan after they recruited the Fab Five.
"What happened with Todd was very difficult. To see that happen to a colleague and friend made it more difficult for me. That happening in my first college job ... I said I'd never do anything like that. It's not worth it to me.
"You don't have to do things -- a scholarship is a reward in itself. My daughter has been awarded a track scholarship to Syracuse. I can tell you it's a big deal to our family that she's on scholarship."
That jumper was smooooooooth
I also find it funny that when Prop 48 came out there were plenty of kids who were not eligible to play as freshmen. Studs like Larry Johnson and Glenn Big Dog Robinson. Now NOBODY fails the SAT. Id bet my life its all cheated.
Knight didnt need to cheat. Most kids in Indiana looked at Basketball as religion and Knight as a deity. He got almost every top Indiana recruit and that was always a stud. When did Knight start losing? When he started missing on all those recruits. Why did he miss? Others paying.
I didnt say the guy was a saint. I said he didnt pay players.
Also I knew Jason Collier personally(he went to school with my younger sister). He said Knight mentioned others will offer you things I wont.
Side note. I tried to convince Jason to go to Kansas. Told him he would be the next Lafrentz. 7' lefty.
Go read about Knight. The guy barely recruited. He had to be begged by assistants to go look at guys. LOL.
Knight never cheated. That guy hated Wooden because he knew about Sam Gilbert.
I agree because their flaws will be exposed by grown men.
I just beleive the NBA is playing a long game here. They want the NCAA to look corrupt. They want the upper echelon kids to feel like they are being exploited. I truly beleive their long game is an academy system like in Europe. They then get these kids at 16 and can train them and weed out the not so great. That makes their product better in the long run.
Guys will say that they will lose the free marketing the NCAA provides. Maybe but I watched the Mavs last night because I wanted to see Doncic and he never touched an NCAA court.
If I was the NBA I'd git rid of any age restriction aside from 18. Then I'd remove the 1st round picks must make the roster rule. This is the most ridiculous thing. Most draft picks after top 5 are now all talent they hope to develop. They should be signed to minor league deals. It would make kids actually think about staying in college to develop. It would help the NBA so they dont dump so much money on guys that never develop.
Kcmatt7 said:
I still think you see most kids in school. $125k is still probably not enough to make up for brand exposure, facilities, social life, and under the table benefits being offered.
The salary isnt the thing. They can now train 24/7 in an actual team environment, sign shoe deals, monetize social media, etc. Some will be millionaires.
Yes it was obvious the NBA wants this. What the players dont get is that the reason the NBA wants it is they will get a much fuller evaluation of their abilities. They will see them actually play against guys their equal. No more skipping the playing part of the combine. This replaces that. Which means a ton of them will be drafted lower. NBA draft will become just like MLB draft. Nobody will care anymore.
To the guys who are surprised about some of this.
How did you feel about the following:
-
Self hiring Townsend who was on staff at California when they cheated like crazy to the point Boezman was banned from coaching in NCAA for 8 years.
-
Mario Chalmers dad getting a staff job.
-
Angel Morris having a job and being relocated to Lawrence.
- Tyshawn's entire family moved to Lawrence.
-
Numerous other parents who come from impoverished backgrounds yet somehow have the ability to up and move and secure jobs and living quarters.
-
Julian Wright committing without ever visiting campus
-
Darnell Jackson getting paid
-
B Rush getting paid before coming back
-
Selby driving a Mercedes - thought to be Adidas money
The NCAA is like a woman who marries a really rich guy(the top colleges). She basically with a wink and nod gives him permission to cheat on her but he better not flaunt it, be seen in public, or get caught. She is all about the lifestyle he gives her but still wants the mirage of a perfect marriage to brag about to her friends and family. Now if the jackass breaks one of the previously mentioned rules then "Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned".
I still cant believe fans of Lance Armstrong were surprised he was using PEDs. People that were that naive must not have been paying attention to the whole sport where EVERYONE either tested positive or admitted doping. College basketball is the same thing and anyone who thinks their team is clean is just as naive. I live in Dayton Ohio and have known several players and others associated with Wright State over the years. Believe me it happens EVERYWHERE.
@KUSTEVE And as nutty as Billy's mom appears you'd think she would have zero issues blaming Self and KU.

Shoe Companies running rampant
Perfect Storm
I'm honestly ready for REAL student athletes again. Let the "studs" go pro out of high school. If they are not drafted I DON'T CARE! Go to Europe or join the real world. Guys will argue they should get reinstated. No way. You do that and the next market is agents who will sign kids they know wont make the NBA right out of high school then herd them to colleges with who they have relationships. So replace the current shoe companies with slime ball agents.
Preston’s eligibility was in question at Kansas first because of a car mishap. The car was a Dodge Charger that the defense said belonged to Preston’s late grandmother.
Kansas accepted the car situation but was pressing Preston’s mother about if she received money elsewhere.
— Matt Norlander (@MattNorlander)
That is good news and they obviously didnt believe her.

@BigBad Compliance probably doesn't even take a look at it unless something happens
So if a basketball playing freshman shows up in a brand new Mercedes Benz does it get "looked at"?
If Preston doesn't wreck the car does he play?
Depth ALWAYS works itself out. There will be 2 or 3 guys that either: 1. are careless with the ball and make stupid turnovers 2. get blown by on defense or miss box outs 3. take bad shots. This will mean a short leash and a seat next to coach Self. I dont care how "deep" we seem to be, there always seem to be short leash guys with Coach Self.

I would hardly call this bunch a Final 4 lock with so many new pieces. A lot of pre-season hype/expectations include Silvio being apart of that. This team may/probably will start two freshman in the backcourt which has its own set of growing pains. I think the sum of all of KU's parts are better then the field but without Silvio its a big dent to the post depth Self was going to have.
Missing DeSousa and having Doke/lawson with McCormack/Lightfoot coming off the bench is still a pretty good 4 man front court rotation.
i agree about the Final 4 not being a lock.
I'm in Ohio and I went to the Champions classic last time it was in Indy. This year the prices look INSANE!
I would NEVER have drafted Wiggins as high as he was. He has ZERO hands and that is a natural ability. Guys dont develop(in college or not) good hands later in their athletic lives. Heck coach Self was quoted in practice saying "softest hands in America". I dont care how athletic you are if your hands cant keep up with your body you will never be an elite level NBA guy. Obviously this is nitpicking because Wiggins is a good/very good pro. He just will never justify a #1 overall pick.
In politics people demonize "the 1%", in basketball people want entire systems changed to accommodate the 1%.
Self always says "playing time will work itself out".
The idea of having a "Lawrence Five" that would enable defensive switches across the lineup and not include Marcus is beyond ignorant.
4 million in California. Taxes will be close to 55%. He will see 2 million. I'd do anything I could to not play in California or New York.
National Championships take a team with a player or two that are go to guys and that have shown they can carry a team offensively when the team is struggling. Until one or two guys show that during the season I have a hard time jumping on the Championship bandwagon. I do expect a really really good team because the depth will aid with Self's way of forcing guys to compete and play really hard to just earn minutes.
Doug McDermott has/had a great 3 point shot too. Problem was he was such a defensive liability that no team can keep him on the floor. Opposing teams IMMEDIATELY put him in bad spots and attacked. I can't shake the thought that this is Svi's future and he wont last long. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Regarding Lawson, this worries me....
Draft Express after the 2016 combine
"The Memphis freshman tested out as the worst athlete at the NBA Combine, and that certainly did not appear to be a fluke based on watching his performances in the games," the report says. "Lawson really doesn't have a position at this stage, as he's undersized for a post player and not skilled enough to play on the wing. He didn't make a single 3-pointer in Chicago and struggled badly to do anything effective inside the arc."
Going to be nice having some size again!
Cunliffe looks like he's lost some weight, he looks lean.
With all the Selden throw downs I was looking for Uncle Anthony in the crowd.
There have been a handful of guys that just don't work out. Nadir Tharpe comes to mind.
