Dedrick puts up stats, but they fill empty.
I'd be willing to bet that at a minimum 30% of his rebounds are off his own short shot. He constantly does that.

@SlickRockJayhawk I think he is afraid to bench Q because he knows if he does, other schools will use that against us in recruiting. It doesn't make much sense to me to allow Q to play through his mistakes, and not Big Dave.
He benched Oubre. If anything I would think Self knows Q has a fragile ego and cant take it. At this point he cant bring anyone in aside from Agbaji, who is playing already, that would make the team any better.
Self can coach up effort, defense, and rebounding. He cant coach up shooting. Teams have finally figured out that crowding Dedric and letting everyone except Vick shoot 3s is the best defensive strategy. Unless guys can start hitting the outside shot consistently to open things up every game will be a struggle.
Sweet 16 AT BEST is the realistic finish for this team.
I said it last game and I'll say it again. Shooting solves the majority of the issues with this team. This is a horrible shooting team.
@HighEliteMajor I'm there with you on Magic. Dude was a WINNER! He won high school state champ, NCAA champ, and NBA champ in a 4 year window and was MVP in all championships.
Of course Bill Russell won NCAA back to back and an NBA title his rookie year.
NBA needs to bring back the hand check. The floor is spread out due to everyone's 3 pt ability and its impossible to guard guys one on one with no physical contact.
@Fightsongwriter That was tongue in cheek.
The backup QB is always the fan favorite.
Man if he could shoot
The fact that self had the 4 freshmen in together earlier showed he’s looking for ANYTHING right now
Shooting would fix a lot of this.
I'm 45 years old. I don't waste time cheer leading. I call it like I see it. Aside from watching Dotson mature, this is the least fun Kansas team to watch in a long time.
We are never landing 1,2,3 of any recruiting class. Unless we switch to NIKE.
I think Vick is a waste as well but we'd have 3/4 more losses without him.
I can dislike a player while realizing we'd be worse without him.
@Crimsonorblue22 Stat stuffing does not equate to wins.
I'm sorry but I'm tired of Dedric. He isn't competitive, doesn't hustle, cant jump, cant slide his feet, and most importantly is not a leader. He reminds me a lot of the stat stuffing guys on a lot of NBA losing teams.
If anyone in the NBA signs Dedric they need to be fired. He is the most athletically challenged good player I've seen in a long time. He'd look so damn slow in the NBA.
@kjayhawks Dotson and Grimes were both top level recruits. Fans need to stop assuming High School success equals instant college success.
Shooting spreads the floor. Opens passing and cutting lanes. We are easy to defend.
They just cant shoot. It really is that simple.
Here is a scary thought I was pondering after I heard the Ochai Agbaji news of losing the redshirt. Everyone jumped to well there are minutes because of Doke. Well what if this really doesnt have to do with Doke? What if Grimes looks this bad in practice as well? What if Grimes is what he is and Ochai was killing him in practice? Maybe this is really the reason.
@Kcmatt7 Self always does that with high potential guys.
I think Grimes issue is his size. Dude is 6'5 and THICK. I think his entire life he bullied his way around the court when he wasnt faster. Now he has guys that are all as fast or faster guarding him and smart enough to take charges on him. He has to develop counter moves. A pull up mid range would do wonders. Also actually being a threat at 3s would give him the space he needs.

Side note: Cunliffe, Anrio etc...were not good HS players. Also Cunliffe was a transfer obviously, and I'd love to get away from transfers for the most part.
Me too!
Agbaji's jump shot release looks like.....Michael Jordan. I am in NO WAY comparing him to Jordan but that is who I thought of.
Self is going back to what he knows....DEFENSE!!!!! I'd bet anything we pressure like crazy. With added guard depth if you dont guard you dont play....Moore and KJ are horrible on D.
@HighEliteMajor McCormak will be in a ton of foul trouble if he plays a ton in conference play.

This injury is just a very sad overall situation for Udoka Azubuike personally. There's a decent chance he never reaches his full potential now - his shooting touch may never progress. He will have some options overseas, but I think the door to the NBA may have closed for him.
He's already reached his potential. He has zero touch, which if you've been around the game is NEVER learned or improved dramatically. He is severely athletically limited, which also isnt improvable. I actually hope he isnt back next year because he just clogs up the offense.
He is fun to watch. If he could hit the 3 a bit more consistent he could be an all conference guy.
Dotson looks right on schedule. Hopefully Grimes catches up when Vick starts dropping off due to more defensive recognition.
@mayjay I've been in Dayton Ohio since. I'm a Jayhawk basketball fan because when I first started getting into basketball I saw a feature on Danny and his dad. They won the title 2 years later.
Always tough for me the week of Chief/Charger games on Jayhawk boards. I'm a Jayhawk fan but a Charger fan. I lived in San Diego until 3rd grade.

Have we even run our backdoor alleyoop yet this year? Wow... Self's calling card.
This team is one of the least athletic teams Self has had. Grimes and Dedric do not have very good ups. Dotson is athletic but small. Doke is just big. Vick is the only top tier "athlete" on the active roster. Ochai looks to have soe serious athletic chops but we have to wait to see it develop.
When Doke is in this should never happen. That is the advantage of a rim protector or at least the illusion of one.
@mayjay Exactly
I've never understood why anyone cares about the rankings. Final Four decides everything and leaves no doubt who is #1 every year.
@justanotherfan
The lack of a rival was why I wanted KU to somehow end up in the SEC. UK vs KU yearly and with conference championships on the line would be awesome.
National ranking may make others think it isn’t anything special he is doing but Self is doing some great things with these guys
