SLACK REMINDER • Nov 08, 2017 01:39 PM

Damn I forgot last night!

Post game thread • Nov 08, 2017 01:35 PM

For all the talk of Devonte being a "leader" I actually see this team as leaderless. Devonte is an offense first, shoot first type of player that is better as a second option. Currently we have no inside offensive game, nobody we can throw it to and get a bucket. We will have games like this and will lose against better competition. Coach has his work cut out this year.

Preston needs to start before Big 12 play.

Last night observations • Nov 01, 2017 12:29 PM

Doke - even after two years has almost no explosiveness off the floor. Every dunk he has is full arm extended. His vertical leap is just not there. Post moves are still really raw. There is potential here and being surrounded by great shooters will help him become a threat. He needs to become an offensive rebounding and put back machine. That would really help this team.

Newman - smooth and seems at peace not having massive expectations because he is next to Devonte.

I'll just put this right here....

Jaybate This Is Your Day • Sep 27, 2017 10:48 PM

@wissox Exactly. This is why you hardly ever see any ineligible freshman. Not that the kids are smarter now. They have such low expectations to meet.

Jaybate This Is Your Day • Sep 27, 2017 10:42 PM

I saw the shoe crap coming a mile away.

Another cheating that HAS to be going on as well is freshman eligibility. If you are under 35 years old you probably don't remember when the SAT was actually hard for these academic genius basketball players. Prop 48 came around in 1986 and back then players actually couldn't get the necessary scores on the SAT or ACT. Studs like Larry Johnson(Jr college route), Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson(out his freshman year), etc, etc couldn't get the grades.

So of course after being barraged with calls of racism the NCAA changed the requirements a bit. Instead of just the SAT and ACT having a score you absolutely must get, they introduced a sliding scale. They now use a combination of high school gpa and a sliding scale test score needed. So if you get a 3.0 in high school you only need a 620 SAT. Of course if you actually earned an HONEST 3.0 then scoring a freaking 800 should be easy. So you can see where this would lead. Fixing high school grades. That way if that is ever caught the colleges have nothing to do with it. See Darrell Arthur.

People at all levels are using these kids and could care less if they actually get an education.

The way I read it was that he had traditionally been wearing Nikes prior to that.. I think he had been in Nike camps and such, so folks thought it was a foregone conclusion he would go to a Nike school.

But he is wearing Adidas in the pros...

I'd bet he had a deal in place prior to picking KU.

The whole thing is corrupt and I am tired of it. Id be fine with all minor leagues at this point. None of these kids want to go to school. I cringe listening to these "college educated" guys barely speak English any time a microphone is in their face.

I just cancelled NFL Sunday Ticket and honestly college basketball is next. I have better things to do with my time.

Crazy to think he is still under 20 years old.

3 seasons: 0,0,31 games. The talent is awesome the health isnt.

Now The Real Fun Begins: May Rotation Talk • Jun 20, 2017 06:27 PM

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Marcus Garrett will get more minutes than most people expect. From all his film he just seems to have that controlled aggression that is required for freshman to play for coach Self.

Being a former college athlete I have seen players like Svi before, where they can be great in practice but when the lights are on and the crowd is in the seats, etc, they seem to underperform. Actually, I have seen the opposite much more often. There are some players that when its a live game situation, a switch gets flipped inside them and they are just gamers.

The practice/gamers phenomenon that happens earlier than college. Heck I see it in elementary age sports all the time.

At this level you need to be either highly athletic or highly skilled. I dont see either here. I hope I end up wrong.

Any word on where Bragg will go? • May 02, 2017 11:46 AM

From a Jon Rothstein tweet

Kansas transfer Carlton Bragg tells me his top five are Xavier, Arizona State, Illinois, Cincinnati and NC State. Will set visits soon.

Malik Newman Offensive Highlights • Apr 18, 2017 04:00 PM

@justanotherfan said in Malik Newman Offensive Highlights:

@JayHawkFanToo

I heard a coach once say that offense is about skill, defense is about effort.

That seems about right to me. The things you do on offense - shooting, passing, dribbling - are all about having certain abilities.

The things you do on defense have some skill elements, but chances are if you have the physical talent to be good on offense, you can carry those same things to the defensive end, and if you work hard, can be a solid defender.

Trying harder will make you a better defender. It won't necessarily make you a better shooter/passer/dribbler.

And THIS is why guys ball hog in AAU and summer camps.

Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux • Apr 04, 2017 05:35 PM

Im never thrilled with 3 star guys either.

For every Mason and Graham we've had a Royce Woolridge and Rio Adams.

this blows! • Apr 04, 2017 01:09 PM

@elpoyo Lucas, Colby, and Bragg on the bench get eaten alive by either of those teams last night. Aside from Collins not a lot of skill but we had even less down low.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I know. I just hate it. I'm the old man yelling "get off my lawn"

@Blown He recruits nationally now. He wouldn't recruit the east coast while at Kansas because he didn't want to offend UNC. He is where he always wanted to be. Only reason he didn't leave the first time was he knew he had Gooden, Hinrich, Collison, and Simien.

Refs were not great but they didnt cause the guys to have such a bad shooting night.

STOP HAVING GAMES IN FOOTBALL STADIUMS!!!!

The shooting atmosphere is horrible.

Bragg - Thoughts and Feelings? • Apr 03, 2017 07:56 PM

@BeddieKU23 said:

I think the staff tried to force him into a role he wasn’t comfortable with and it showed. He didn’t really have a choice after the style of play switched to the 4 guard offense. A big part of why that happened was the inability for Bragg to develop enough to start him.

THIS....

He basically became a tweener for the system we were playing.

Roy: Master of Illusion • Apr 02, 2017 05:50 PM

To me THIS is the new way to recruit. Find guys who are overrated. Guys who will be good/great college guys who have to stay 3 years. Easier said then done.

will Self blend his guard oriented offense with high low and terrorize the NCAA? I can't wait to find out.

Next year may be that blend!
I could see Billy Preston being a 4 that is more like Marcus Morris than the normal high low 4 for Self.

Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux • Mar 31, 2017 02:06 PM

Interesting that Texas Tech is using juco guys being that they run the motion offense. That offense take some time to understand and run effectively. You have to fill out a roster though.

The problem for KU & Zona is they currently have PG's so predictably his answer is going to be "waiting to see what Devonte Graham or a Kobi Simmons does at Arizona.

Frank just won national player of the year next to Devonte. I dont see how Devonte's status affects a point guard. Devonte plays a role like Chalmers did and is better as the secondary ball handler.

I'm sure if everything happens the way he's talking maybe he decides in April. I wouldn't hold my breathe for Duval, he's an expert at what to say. Nike wants him at Duke, UA wants him to skip College so that UA doesn't have competition for him after his 1 year. This is much more then just Colleges trying to convince him to go to school

How are conversations like this happening? How does this not affect amateur status?

@HighEliteMajor

The Bucknell game was bad. Langford was on a bad wheel and Wayne seemed really tired at the end of that season.

The Bradley game was the 05-06 team. That team played well at times but was REALLY young and had chemistry issues with Julian Wright. I dont think Self ever figured out the best rotation with him. He was such a hybrid player.

The Stanford game we missed Embiid but Self should have started pressing earlier.

Withcita State loss was a roster of no go to players. Ellis wasn't that confident yet, Selden never was reliable, and Frank wasn't really Frank yet. I also don't think our guys wanted it like they did. The "nobody respects us" is always a huge motivator.

MASON AP PLAYER OF THE YEAR - ALL AMERICAN • Mar 31, 2017 12:54 PM

I'm going to preface this with the statement that I LOVE Frank Mason and all he did for Kansas.

However, does anyone else feel like these awards are going to lose some luster because all of the great basketball talent leaves early for the NBA? I'm not saying the award winners should always end up being NBA studs but they used to be a precursor for some NBA success.

It seems to me that the NCAA is never really eager to follow through on any violations by Duke or UNC.

@Texas-Hawk-10 said:

@ParisHawk Self's been a lower seed in the E8 twice. KU lost as a 4 seed to 3 seed GT in 2004 and beat 1 seed UNC as a 2 seed in 2012. 2 games is not enough to draw any meaningful or trends out of.

And that 1 seed UNC team was missing their starting point guard.

Selden V. Jackson • Mar 29, 2017 03:28 PM

If Wayne stayed would we have landed Jackson?

If we had both I would think Wayne starts over Svi so i don't see it as 1 vs the other.

KU got beat by a better team • Mar 29, 2017 01:58 PM

@dylans Totally agree but championship rosters have inside guys to go to for easy buckets when the outside shots are not falling. I knew that eventually our lack of inside offense would hurt us.

And if Josh blows out his knee next year at least he will have got that first NBA contract.

Giles will still be a 1st round pick after TWO blown out knees.

I wasnt talking about sure fire top 10 guys. I'm talking about guys like Wayne Selden. He threw away a senior year for what? A 10 day contract?

When is the article going to be done covering the many.many guys who left early and now have basically nothing? This era is pretty bad. For every Wiggins we have Henry, Selby, Cliff. Heck even guys who leave with only a year or two left like Wayne. I still dont get why going into a situation(NBA) where you basically only play games and dont practice is better then practicing under a Hall of fame coach for another season. I've learned to hate the "go when your stock is at its highest" crap.

Go look at the guys from UK's 2012 champ roster. Doron Lamb and Teague are already out of the league.
