Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Mar 24, 2021 12:53 PM

@BeddieKU23 If I was them I'd look seriously at Dane Fife. Young, hungry, and a 10-year assistant job under Izzo.

KU vs USC game thread • Mar 23, 2021 04:02 AM

@FarmerJayhawk Wings because they can't handle the ball. Only Svi was tall enough to have a positional excuse. The other 3 are not over 6'5.

KU vs USC game thread • Mar 23, 2021 03:59 AM

@FarmerJayhawk Maybe but he's only 6'5

KU vs USC game thread • Mar 23, 2021 03:59 AM

Any thoughts on guard skill development? Don't throw Mason and Devonte at me. Other than those two has anyone really developed? Selden, Vick, Svi, Ochai, etc....None ever really develop ball-handling past their freshman year ability.

KU vs USC game thread • Mar 23, 2021 03:55 AM

@BShark Agree... Braun and Ochai are essentially the same player. Here and there shooter who doesn't create at all. Cant be played together unless one is actually hitting shots.

KU vs USC game thread • Mar 23, 2021 03:52 AM

@BShark Will it be more combo guard guys who cant shoot or create? I'd be happy with anyone who can shoot.

KU vs USC game thread • Mar 23, 2021 03:49 AM

If this is the level of guards Self is going to roll with then he needs to ditch the weave stuff. Set some actual screens AWAY from the ball and get these slow, poor shooting guys some screen read options.

KU vs USC game thread • Mar 23, 2021 02:40 AM

@tundrahok He looks nervous

KU vs USC game thread • Mar 23, 2021 02:40 AM

Kenpom has USC 8 overall(20 on O, 6 on D) Kansas at 20(49 on O, 10 on D)
Looks about right expect tonight Kansas is about 149 in O

KU vs USC game thread • Mar 23, 2021 02:31 AM

I watched every game this year and I thought the same thing I am right now. How Bill Self has this team finishing 2nd in the conference and a 3 seed is amazing. ZERO shooters.

USC Game • Mar 22, 2021 08:27 PM

Still debating buying tickets. I'm in Dayton Ohio and about 2 hours away.

@Kcmatt7 Imagine paying the buyout of a LIFETIME contract. I think they have to pay 7 years if you oust him.

@BeddieKU23 Really liked Self sticking with Bryce late. Feel like he earned it, good to let him play through a mistake.

HUGE sign Self MIGHT be softening a bit. 99.9% of the time a freshman is immediately pulled with a turnover in that situation.

Christian Braun is kind of a head case. It reared its ugly head against Gonzaga when he got T-d up for being a jerk after dunking on a guy and I saw a flash of it today when he barked at the Creighton bench or another player, I couldn’t see which, after making a 3 pointer late.

If you think he is a "head case", then I don't think you understand what it takes for a kid like him to be competitive in the high-end AAU circuit for years.

After 3 games- Discussion • Dec 02, 2020 05:21 PM

@Kcmatt7 Just going to have to mix it up this year. The thing is Self seems more like a reactive coach than proactive. I hope Self changes lineups throughout the game to the point the other coach has to respond.

@BShark said in After 3 games- Discussion:

@Crimsonorblue22 Kentucky's athletes were too much for Bryce. I would expect him to be better in the games coming up against softer competition. I do believe Bryce can get to a point where he will be good in games like that, it will just take time.

This is a common theme with many of Self's guard recruits. Mainly because he loves combo guards. The problem with combo guards is they generally are not elite at either shooting or ball-handling/playmaking, they are just good at both. This is always a problem early in the college season and continues until they shore up one or both of those skills. RusRob, Chalmers, Selby(not here long enough to fix), Selden, etc were all in this mold.

Harris is more playable than Bryce right now because his playmaking/point guard skill is at a higher level. He is an actual point guard. On the flip side Bryce has a higher ceiling and its up to the staff to get him closer to it by mid/late season.

Small ball lineup is the best lineup but Dave/Mitch will have to play some to keep Jalen out of foul trouble. Unless we stay small and let Marcus guard a big.

WE JUST GOT TO HAVE dAVE AT SOME POINT - - GOT TO GET BETTER. - -WITH OUT A DECENT big - NO CHANCE AT A TITLE

Nova has won two titles without much of a "big"

If Harris doesn't start this year then I 100% believe Self makes recruiting promises.

Calamari Game Thread • Dec 02, 2020 04:17 AM

@BShark Harris just seems to be a high basketball IQ guy. I wish guys got more enamored with that skill and shooting. Forget about all the athletic crap.

Dave 1-8 with 2 rebounds....EEEEK
On the good side he is 4-4 at the line

you have to be able to get off your feet to have a shot

I don't understand why Braun is so bad at the line. He isn't a bad shooter. Nerves?

Me either. ON a couple he looked like he was leaning back.

Calamari Game Thread • Dec 02, 2020 03:36 AM

Also the weave worked great with two stud ball handlers like Devonte and Frank. It does not work with guys like Marcus, Braun, and Abagji.

Calamari Game Thread • Dec 02, 2020 03:35 AM

Self always has blind spots for certain guys and Marcus is another one. I love his d too but he is a liability on offense. Sick or not

Calamari Game Thread • Dec 02, 2020 03:34 AM

Marcus Garrett is NOT A POINT GUARD! Stop having the guy at the top of the key. Enough already. He is not a playmaker and never will be.

Gonzaga Game Thread • Nov 27, 2020 02:20 PM

The best offensive unit will be the worst defensive unit on this team. Going to be fun watching coach Self deal with that.

We will need Dave to improve and he will. I like a lot of other things regarding the team.

We just need rim protection, rebounding, and some finishes. NOTHING else

Gonzaga Game Thread • Nov 26, 2020 08:23 PM

We always look like this at the start of the year unless we have an experienced point guard. Self will figure it out.

Gonzaga Game Thread • Nov 26, 2020 07:22 PM

Going to be a long year if we lack playmaking from the point guard spot. Seems like we are nothing but wings with David and Mitch.

@approxinfinity He definitely helped that day! We all were so high on his potential at that point too.

RIP John Thompson • Sep 01, 2020 11:45 PM

I'll always remember John Thompson for messing up the olympic team in 1988 so bad we got the 1992 dream team.

Easy solution to the cop problem. Designate areas by race and allow only cops of that race. So when your getting your ass kicked by a cop we can quickly eliminate racism as a motive and allow the media to change the focus and get rid of the bad cops quicker.

Like the link below... see I bet you never heard about. Why because both cop and suspect are the same race. Now investigate the situation without the world screaming RACISM!

I don't think Self is going to completely rule out Braun being the successor to Garrett at PG. Braun ran some point last season and will probably be Garrett's primary back up this season.

Braun has a long way to go to run the point. He looked scared to handle under pressure at times.

Danny Manning fired • Apr 27, 2020 03:20 PM

@FarmerJayhawk "Big Man" footwork is not positional. The best players utilize that footwork all over the court.

2020 Recruiting • Apr 17, 2020 02:54 PM

@BShark Agree about the quality except one thing. The NBA is all about individual skill training. There is a lack of teaching and learning TEAM basketball. NBA teams do not practice a ton. As of today the majority of NBA players come to the NBA with some college which means they got at least one year of a coach teaching and preaching team basketball. Unless the g-league coaches teach more like a college team oriented way the team play will continue to get worse.

I actually think the only way team ball comes back in NBA is if you eliminate the corner 3. This will force more motion and screening to get open easy 2s. It would also bring back the want and need for a solid post guy. Not just a screen/3/rim runner like today.

Hurt is Charmin soft. Probably for the best that he didn't come here. Right now he is absolutely a better college player than Braun and Enaruna though.

This is always interesting to ponder. Would a soft player like Hurt have been destroyed mentally here or would practicing against Mitch, David, and Doke, while Self instilling toughness have made him much better?
