@joeloveshawks1 All other team fans cheer for the upsets. It really can be tough for the higher seeds if they don't knock out their opponent early.

NOT Remy?! β€’ Mar 22, 2022 06:48 PM

If you've never coached you will never understand why Coach Self isn't high on Remy. Coaches keep a running tally on winning vs losing plays. With that, they calculate internally a ceiling and floor for the player and base trust on all of that. Remy defensively has a low ceiling right now. He's the type of player that would need a couple of years minimum to get Self. The Remy/Harris situation seems very similar to Sherron(freshman)/RussRob. At different times we need one and sometimes we need both. Without Sherron's explosiveness, we don't win in 2008. The difference now is that Jalen, Christian, and even Och are more inconsistent offensively than the 2008 guys.

Monday Morning Madness Thoughts β€’ Mar 21, 2022 02:24 PM

Self's record in the first game of each 4 team tourney is pretty good. They get more time to prepare and the best coaches seem to always do well. The Creighton game to me was less preparation time and that team after losing their big man had to go with chuck 3s and hope they go in. So even the scouting report on the team was probably chucked out the window.

So again I'm pretty confident for Friday's game but already stressed about Sundays if it is Miami. Less prep time and athletes.

I think this question has been answered.

Let's talk about Bill..... β€’ Nov 15, 2021 04:17 PM

I was calling for more Sherron in his freshman year over Rus Rob. Bill doesn't operate that way. I wish he'd sacrifice some regular-season games for a more seasoned tournament team.

Well are we what Coach Self wanted? β€’ Nov 10, 2021 03:30 AM

β€œFor us to be a national title contender, we need to get more athletic, we need to get longer, we need to get bigger," Kansas coach Bill Self Mar 23, 2021

So look at that quote and then look at the starting lineup. Only Remy Martin was new. I wouldn't put him as longer or bigger, maybe more athletic. The only guys that played that I'd maybe put in line with Self's quote are KJ(bigger and longer), Zach(bigger), and Pettiford(more athletic) and none of them played much.

Ochai played great, he already had those things. Maybe he's finally added the much-needed skill. Let's all hope his shooting isn't fools gold because you take away his 3/6 from three and the team goes 3/11.

Once Coach Self solidifies the rotation with Jalen in the mix I think this is a solid squad. I just don think it fit the bill that Self was after.

MJ Rice looks like another Seldon/Grimes/Andrew White. Big, thick guards who may or may not also be explosive. Tough to tell if guys like this will be a success because they use their size so well in high school.

July predictions for the upcoming season results β€’ Jul 12, 2021 08:00 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 said in July predictions for the upcoming season results:

I think Remy Martin ends up winning Big 12 POY and leads the team in scoring and assists. Dave and Ochai will also earn All-12 honors and Wilson and JCL will be honorable mentions this year.

I'm really really curious to see Self handle a volume(borderline ballhog) shooter like Martin. The dude averaged nearly 15 shots a game the last two seasons. Devonte and Frank never got that high. Self generally clashes with chuck first guys and it's not like there are a couple of years of trust built up.

If they pay athletes they sure better get rid of ANY fee from ACTUAL students.

Also if they pay Basketball and Football players whose programs actually make money does Title IX then require the schools to pay a women swimmer an equal amount.

If I'm a low level D1 college sports go bye bye.

@Kcmatt7 said in NCAA loses more power... again...:

I guess how does this change it for you from what it is right now?

Basically, it's just icing on the cake.

It's already getting to the point where you don't watch kids develop. The turnover(outside of Lightfoot) makes following a team less fun. This upcoming season is already my least anticipated season since I can remember.
I'm not interested in watching schools have recruiting competitions(for nonpro players) using advertising companies showing how their players get more exposure on the local TV market. Then watch the recruiting prize walk out the door 9 months later.

NCAA loses more power... again... β€’ Jun 21, 2021 09:53 PM

College sports can only work when the athletes value a scholarship. Schools started using Basketball and Football as advertising to attract more students. I have ZERO interest in watching minor league sports, and that is what this will now become.

Coach K to retire after 21-22 season β€’ Jun 02, 2021 07:06 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10
So Adidas money didn't happen?
How is recruiting going now? Seems Self's style is to throw interest at any and every player out there.
About 90% of these kids don't care ONE BIT about getting a degree.
Fan bases who want it to survive think that paying them will save it.

Watching kids develop and grow as basketball players and people is gone.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to watch but if we have roster turnover every year I'll watch less and less and I wont be alone.

Coach K to retire after 21-22 season β€’ Jun 02, 2021 06:48 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 said in Coach K to retire after 21-22 season:

Considering the situation in Boston right now, I'd be surprised if Duke doesn't at least inquire about Stevens interest in returning to college.

NOBODY wants to coach college over NBA anymore. In both jobs, you are dealing with young kids full of themselves. However, with college, you have to kiss their butts, kiss their parents' butts, pay them under the table instead of in the open, lose free agents without a financial negotiation, etc.

College basketball is all but dead......wait until they start paying these yahoos

LOL...Langford routinely hit clutch shots for Kansas. Ochai cant shoot and is really limited creating going to the hole. ZERO comparisons here.

Jalen Declares For Draft β€’ Apr 09, 2021 10:28 PM

@justanotherfan HAHAHAH
I watch more NBA than college. They draft talent and that's it. They will work talent into their team. They are not looking to slot 2nd rounders into a system. The NBA could drop the 2nd round and not a single team would care.

Go back and look at the drafts from 8 to 5 years ago and tell me how many guys are still in the NBA.

I don't care that these kids do this, I'm just sick of college basketball recruiting kids who all think they are better than they are. Hell I'm starting to believe coaches are pushes kids out and saying "the scouts said he was a second-rounder, I don't know what happened.".

I wish it would go back to local kids who actually care about school and an early entry was few and far between.

There is a reason Roy brought up Kirk and Nick in his retirement press conferencee.

Jalen Declares For Draft β€’ Apr 09, 2021 09:54 PM

Jalen Wilson averages against big 12
11.7ppg
8rbpg
33% from 3

At absolute best he’s a 3 and D guy in nba. Not much d and slow
33% from 3

But go have a conversation with agents and scouts and feel like an NBA player for a few weeks.

College basketball sucks now

Jalen Declares For Draft β€’ Apr 09, 2021 09:42 PM

Someone fill me in. The stock explanation is β€œget feed back from nba scouts on what to work on”.

For years and years college coaches would get reports and feedback about players. What did this have to change? Do players not trust their college coach? Or is this actually more about feedback from agents?

Does Baylor's title make Self hungrier? β€’ Apr 08, 2021 01:12 AM

Michigan game hurts way more than VCU to me.

Does Baylor's title make Self hungrier? β€’ Apr 08, 2021 01:02 AM

@BShark You honestly think you can win a national championship with Reed and Morningstar starting? The Selby suspension and lack of development killed any hopes.

This could just be Old Man Yelling at Cloud......

It isn't just Self that's starting to get to me. It is the state of modern basketball. Everyone's offense now is 2 guys standing in a corner and the ball receiving a high screen from one of the other two guys. There is no longer much screening away from the ball. Nobody gets each other open anymore with off-ball screens and movement, it's all just spread out and watch one guy try to break down the defense. Or Self's version of a modern offense....the weave with guards until someone has an advantage.

Somehow coaches have all bought into the idea that spacing > movement. The biggest issue I have with it is that a very low percent of college teams have more than 2 good shooters. Again because nobody gets each other open anymore with off-ball screens and movement, slower catch and shoot kids don't have a place. So we get stuck with Agbaji and Braun types who can "athletically hang", but lack basketball skill.

If anyone watched the UCLA and Michigan game and thought that was good basketball then there is no point in having this discussion with me.

Team Ranks:

  • 155th FT% - .716
  • 150th 3pt% - .342
  • 121st PPG - 73.0

But I'm sure "longer and more athletic" will cure this. I think Self is starting to spin his wheels a bit.

I also think Ochai will be great next year.

We've been saying this for 2 years now. He is what he is. Like Braun, if his shot off he is easy to guard.

The curious case of Christian Braun β€’ Apr 01, 2021 12:30 PM

When you have limited finishing ability in the half-court, your jump shot better be really good. Unfortunately, he seems to be a streaky shooter and not consistent enough to be a real threat.
