Fluff piece on Cunliffe • Dec 13, 2017 03:39 PM

@justanotherfan I got a concussion (and six stitches in my forehead) the first game of old man's league this year. It's taken me about a month to recover. Hopefully Malik will come along more quickly than that.

Fluff piece on Cunliffe • Dec 13, 2017 03:15 PM

@BeddieKU23 Was surprised to see he actually started all 10 games last year before deciding to transfer.

Some of his quotes that caught my attention was that he naturally believes the ball should be in his hand, but he has realized that isn't necessarily the case at Kansas. We will see. Old habits die hard. He seems to say the right things as far as keeping the ball moving, so hopefully he responds he same way on the court.

His comments about it 'clicking' just these last few weeks after having been here for 1 year also surprised me. What has he been paying attention to the last year that is just now realizing Bill's defensive approach and Offensive philosophy of ball movement.

At the very least, He will be a fresh body off of the bench who I imagine will play about as well as Garrett.

As an aside, I watched the 08 Semi and Final the last couple of days. Those kids played so fast with and without the ball. Their passes were so crisp and immediate. I actually had to check and make sure the remote wasn't in like a fast-forward mode because they were moving so fast compared to what I have grown accustomed too. That was a great team though. Can't really expect that from this group.

but to @jaybate-1-0 's point, I like where you are going with it. I like the idea of using the game to promote recruiting.

we do a lot of traveling--Italy, Japan, Canada (right??), Bahamas, Hawaii, for pre conference tourney's but they do not seem to be in recruiting hotbeds. More tourneys in Chicago, New York, and the Carolina.

Every KU game i’ve attended there outside of Big 12 Tourney when we play ISU or Missouri, the crowd was about 90% Jayhawks. It isn’t AFH but it definitely has the home crowd advantage and there is no denying that.

Newman • Dec 12, 2017 09:51 PM

might have something to do with us putting too much expectation on a coveted elite recruit we fought with Kentucky to get and missed out on originally. and to add to that he’s been around the program for a year.

and stats don’t always tell the entire story about someone being a good teammate. see Kevin Young and BStar.

Vent Here.... • Dec 11, 2017 05:04 PM

@Kcmatt7 I think the ball sticks with him when he gets it. He has a quick trigger. Drives at the most in opportune times and doesn't know when he's in too deep and to stop, pull up, and get the ball back out swinging around the perimeter. It appears to me like he goes rogue.

EDIT: Ya know, on second thought, Svi have a few of those same qualities, too. Maybe they are selfishly playing for their draft stock?

Vent Here.... • Dec 11, 2017 04:45 PM

These losses will just help us to appreciate the wins. This team has a lot of holes in it. A LOT. Let's watch the genius mask those holes. Until Doke adds something more than a drop-step dunk to his offensive repertoire and learns to protect the rim the team will live and die by the 3.

On a side note: Newman is holding this offense back, imo.

if Self worried about losing he wouldn’t routinely schdule one of the toughest non-con schedules and play in the champions classic year after year. For whatever reason he sees no value (recruiting advantage) in scheduling WSU.

there are some serious insecurities in this forum with regard to WSU. They have a good program and a good coach for the time being. honestly, when self retires in 4-5 years, Marshall would be one of the first calls I’d make.

Beyond The Streak • Dec 10, 2017 03:12 PM

It has also been fun as it is reminding me of some of my own life experiences and bringing back good memories: Watching the "Durant Show" from the last seat in the house in March 2007. Being able to see the Iowa St. Vs Kansas game at bar on a beach in Ixtapa in 2005 (that was the only game I was able to watch in 2005).

Here is an excerpt that I read a few times because I enjoyed the imagery:

"Jeremy Case: that summer it was all about getting better against each other. I think we were going so hard against each other that it caused a little tension. There were a lot of arguments, a lot of fights. The most memorable one was with Russ and Darnell.

Sherron Collins: We were playing pickup and Darnell and Russ were arguing about recruiting rankings. They were going back and forth about who was rated higher coming out of high school. It was getting heated, then D-Block started making fun of Russ. He said he wasn't a true New Yorker, that he was from the suburbs. That pissed Russ off.

Jeremy Case: Russ found a line on the court and told Darnell, "C'mon...cross the line right here. I dare you to cross it." So Darnell crossed the line and swung at Russ. He missed, and then Russ swung back and caught him right in the jaw. Darnell stumbled back a little and then we broke it up. I think Russ got the best of him.

Tyrell Reed: Darnell didn't go to the floor, but Russ definitely staggered him. Russ started running around (celebrating) and pickup was done."

@Fightsongwriter i enjoy collecting all things KU so for me it was a purchase. at $30, it’s a steep price just for a read. also, I picked it up at a book signing at Rally House, so there are likely less expensive venues soon. (used)

Beyond The Streak • Dec 10, 2017 06:26 AM

recently got a copy of Jason Kings new book Beyond the Streak. there is a lot of insight to the players and program over the last 14 years. it’s been entertaining and informative on a few levels. just thought id share that for any of you who were not aware.

What's wrong with Coach Self? • Dec 08, 2017 08:13 PM

Heard this driving home from the game the other night. Posted on Kusports now. It concerned me when I heard it. Still been thinking about it. How can you have a team with players in the system 2-4 years as your current starters, and not know the plays--or not be able to execute them?

“We're not a good execution team,” KU coach Bill Self said after the loss. “When we're playing well, we're a good playing team, but we haven't scored all year on plays. We had some plays that we tried to do, but our execution's so bad. We got the ball where it needed to go, for the most part. I just thought our defense was horrendous and our hustle plays weren't very good either.

Evaluation • Dec 07, 2017 04:09 PM

Bad match up this team can easily fall in the round of 32. I don't see them anything more than an elite 8 team. Who knows how Preston and Silvio could impact this though.

Exposed • Dec 07, 2017 02:33 PM

After getting their tails kicked last weekend, the Syracuse Orange coaching staff delivered the perfect strategy to their guy Hopkins to address Kansas' three point proficiency. To Hopkins' credit, his team executed the game plan wonderfully. The team has a high ceiling and a low floor.

What's wrong with Coach Self? • Dec 07, 2017 01:54 PM

Looked eerily similar to the Oregon game, didn't it? Team faces a defense that they cannot figure out on the court and cant figure out their shot or where to get them. 4 on 3 on the perimeter leaving their big to guard the lane and daring the Hawks to beat them playing 2 on 1 with Doke and Vick vs their big. Zebras came in with an assist the first half by taking out our bigs and really putting the hurt on any chance to score inside. (This game was not on the refs, do not get me wrong) Mitch and Doke seem to have no offensive move outside of the dunk. Doke was sucking air after two trips down the court last night. The team already has no legs and its December. UW was Longer and Athletic at three key positions and played bigger at the remaining 2 all night. Kansas was a step behind, out hustled, and there was nothing that could be done to overcome their length on the perimeter and Kansas' inability to grab a board when it counted. About all Self did was watch it happen all night.

Graham pulled a Selden and the team followed suit.

DeSousa • Nov 28, 2017 04:49 AM

Diallo only missed 5 games and could never really seem to get it going and has been around the program all semester. Wouldn’t have high hopes for Silvio. We all know Self has a short leash for blown defensive assignments. On the other hand, maybe 3-5 min a game is all Doke will need.

Remember when you said they were gonna take the pick up truck of OAD's and back it up to K because Cal wasn't getting it done. To me, it appears that is currently happening. (Ciao, by the way :) )

Perception on Devonte • Nov 15, 2017 06:28 PM

For most of the game, I couldn't tell who had been in the program longer; DG or Newman. Both were chucking up shots out of rhythm of the offense. Was disappointed in DG for most of the night. He did stay calm down the stretch though, and that certainly helped the team overall.

Seemed like every outro to commercial break was a Kentucky marketing piece, also. Felt like I was watching the Big Blue Nation Network.

@JayHawkFanToo me, too. cut the cable right after the Oregon game.

@JayHawkFanToo Thanks, and I hope you are well.

Looking for a live stream to the game. Thanks.

Streaming feed is terrible. If it weren't a fundraiser, I'd call and get my damn money back.

Kansas Lands Poetic Big... • May 03, 2017 09:01 PM

@HighEliteMajor I'd be considered a runt & make a lot of strips against Juco to middle aged men who have not figured that basic concept out. I did get my teeth knocked in a few years ago and that scared me out of the paint for a little while.

Kansas Lands Poetic Big... • May 03, 2017 05:00 PM

Christian Moody 2.0?

Appears that Svi is not coming back & Self knows it.

@JayHawkFanToo did they consider all the extra time that was taken off due to rebounding and scoring and how that could have possibly affected the game? Instead of a forced 3 from Lee maybe you have more opportunities? Without seeing the study for myself, I have a hard time believing missing 18 free throws has no impact on a 3pt game. That is interesting someone took a look at it from that angle though.

Mason and Graham vs Mario and Russ • Apr 30, 2017 05:44 PM

2 vs 2 I take DG & Mason.

Title Run, I take Mario & RussRob. They've proved it. Makes it a pretty easy decision for me.

@HighEliteMajor and 2003? The Syracuse loss stings the most for me. Missing 18 of 32 free throws.

Nobody gonna out work or out heart this kid. Nobody. (Best said in a rocky balboa voice )

My bet he is wanting to get the legal stuff finalized before declaring.

Trey Burke was picked #9 overall. To think that Frank will go un-drafted is unthinkable.

I don't mind any of it. But it comes down to personal preference. The locking feature was a neat add.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:41 PM

@Kcmatt7 said in SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS:

“you have a chance to make millions. Go do that. If you don’t get good feedback, you can come back. But just keep me in the loop.......and in the meantime we might use your scholarship on a better recruit if one happens to come along because the spring signing period is upon us"

I agree, it is unlikely. If it were my program, that is how I would do it. Life is about choice, chance, risk & consequence. Just my take. I'll respect yours, too.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:32 PM

@Kcmatt7 Bill over recruits all of the time. Do you want to go down the list of players that left after their year end visit?

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:32 PM

@BeddieKU23 Now you are putting words in my mouth !!! I didn't say that "he can't come back" I said, in my opinion, that if he says hes is going to test waters, his scholarship should be considered vacant until he announces he's returning. Not gonna argue it anymore. It's just an opinion. Not being prepared for the Morrii twins really hurt and I wouldn't want to be there again. This is business now. College basketball is business, whether you like it, or not.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:29 PM

@BShark Why would Self do that?

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:28 PM

@BeddieKU23 arent scholarships reissued on a yearly basis? Scholarships are not a four year deal, as I understand it. You could ask Carlton Bragg, he might know.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:26 PM

Why wouldn't you test? It gets you direct feedback from scouts.

The concerning part for me is the way his statement started off. I get the feeling if it's not to the NBA, it's to Europe.

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:25 PM

@Kcmatt7 Then I guess we disagree?

What if 4 players wanted to test.

We hold the schollies, miss out out on four kids, and then all four left for the draft?

Where would that leave the program?

SVI WILL TEST THE WATERS • Apr 12, 2017 06:19 PM

@jayballer54 I would think Self would tell him that a risk he takes by entering the draft is that he could lose his scholarship. I think it is only fair, Self learned his lesson the hard way after 2011 and I doubt he wants to take chances.

Wasn't sure where to post this:

Thoughts on Graham/Svi decision • Apr 08, 2017 09:58 PM

@KUSTEVE I worry about his ability to stay healthy more than anything. No showing the elite eight game wasn't a good look either.
