KU Players Leaving/Staying Tracker • Mar 29, 2017 03:15 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 It could be Bragg leaving.

KU Players Leaving/Staying Tracker • Mar 29, 2017 03:05 PM

@BShark like a bad college date, just leading us on...

KU Players Leaving/Staying Tracker • Mar 29, 2017 02:56 PM

@BShark PS. You suck. Kidding, kidding!

Sure would have been a different dynamic had they made free throws and beat cuse. Likely still would have gone home, but sure would have been leaving in a bitter sweet high note.

@joeloveshawks yes, Roy was hitting his stride for sure and has continued it for the most part. And as I've aged I understand and respect his move to get back home.

I was a sophomore when Roy left. I was sick for a week. I could not stop thinking about how there was no possible way our next coach could outperform, or even match what he did. 14 years later, here we are and Bills best tournament days are ahead of him. He won the gold medal. he's been to two straight elite eights. Let's hope he sticks around another 5 years and gets another ring, or two. He deserves it.

@kjayhawks Its just coincidence but I did notice 12 of 13 titles were won by Eastern Time Zone Teams. 42 of 47, or something has been won by eastern time zone schools since ESPN became televised. Just a coincidence, I'm sure. But still noteworthy. With this much data, it would mean it is an exception to the rule when a team west of the Mississippi wins it.

Arkansas, UCLA, Kansas, UNLV, & Arizona--I believe are those exceptions

Does not include 15/16

We really need him to lead the charge to be a defensive minded team.

Bill needs to get these boys back in the top 5 of 3pt/FG defense. If Udoka progresses enough and can stay healthy, we will have the back line to allow more pressure on the perimeter. If Coleby and Udoka the 4 and 5 we will likely be offensively challenged and continue with the 4/1 line up.

KU got beat by a better team • Mar 27, 2017 09:12 PM

@chriz

That was the game that Johnson got a t'd up for hitting McGary in crotch.

Was reviewing some old articles and noted another common theme...one of our starting guards fouled up quickly in the first half...

Johnson,* who picked up three fouls in just three minutes of playing time in the first half*, gave Kansas its biggest lead at 68-54 with a 3-pointer from the corner with just under 7 minutes left.

KU got beat by a better team • Mar 27, 2017 09:04 PM

@chriz I can't be certain. It sure felt like it.

I do know with certainty that we had a 5 point lead with 21 seconds left.

KU got beat by a better team • Mar 27, 2017 08:35 PM

@nuleafjhawk man that was hard to read. painful, but true. Why do we seem to have the most inexplicable losses in the tournament?

2010 shoot 10% from three and run into Faroukmanesh

2011 Markief has an uncharacteristic 8 turnovers by himself and we lose to VCU

2013 we blow a 12 point lead in 2 minutes to michigan

2017 a 40% and 50% three point shooting duo go 2 of 14.

Graham and Mason shot so poorly from 3 on Saturday that their performance dropped their yearly 3pt% a percentage point just in one game.

you cant make this stuff up.

@nuleafjhawk looks like a Carlton Bragg stat line.

@kjayhawks saw your tag line. Maybe somebody needs to send a #BIFM shirt to Frank Martin?

Ken Pom • Mar 27, 2017 06:11 PM

Of the Elite 8 teams, five were in Ken Poms top 10 the day prior to the tourney Starting.

Oregon was 16th, South Carolina 30th and Xavier 40th.

Of the Final Four you have Gonzaga who was ranked # 1, North Carolina who was ranked # 3.

South Carolina has the #3 adjusted defense and 150th Adjusted Offense.

Oregon has 24th Adjusted D and 19th Adjusted Offense.

Kansas was in the top 10 overall for Ken Pom, but had the adjusted defense of 28.

I have a bracket in the KUBUCKETS challenge that was selected strictly based on the Ken Pom rankings, and when there were two teams within a few lines of each other, I have the nod to the team with the best defensive efficiency.

That bracket is not doing very well. None of my brackets are.

My 10 year old has 1 team in the FF.

My wife, who watches very little basketball has 2 of the 4. She probably guessed based off team colors or something weird like that.

I am going to track this moving forward to see how accurately Ken Pom can predict the Elite Eight and FF.

@jayballer54 If you are a member of the kusports posters, or @Texas-Hawk-10 I think I see your name pop up over there sometimes...

Maybe we should have some investigative journalism and interview players from all elite eight teams that lost, and maybe even the ones that didn't lose and see if there is a common theme that can be discovered.

It doesn't look like Jesse Newell is on here any more. Maybe somebody here knows Keegan, or Tait. Maybe a good piece to work on in the offseason.

Stephen A is a dodo. Does Calipari have 3 FF in 9 years at Kentucky? Two national title trips and a championship? And he does it with a brand new roster every year. Had he found a way to be UNC yesterday, he would be on his way to another title, imo.

The all too familiar sports fan seasonal experience as told by the dandelion...

@tis4tim I didn't feel like the refs missed fouls on Bell.

I do think the second foul against JJ was as BS of a call as you could find. To have Bigs constantly body to body in the paint with no calls and all of the hand checking going on all tournament to see that incidental and inadvertent contact by Josh on his arm was a complete farce.

It did appear to me that the refs missed a lot of traveling violations.

@BShark 6-9 but still not a OAD

HAPPENS to be a freak of nature with his blocking abilities

Nice post.

The match up zone and Oregon sending 3-4 back immediately on missed shots to prevent transition run-outs changed everything Kansas wanted to do. Even with just 1-2 players staying back for the rebound it seemed like the ball just bounced their way more often, than not. Similar to the last two ridiculous 3 pt shots before the end of the first half. Still Kansas did everything they did to fight back into it, and got into it. That last rebound tipped away from each other and then giving up the 3 sealed it and that was at 2:30 left with plenty of time to come back had they secured the rebound, scored a 2 and got it within 4 at that point.

Many of the principles of the MUZ were exact remedies for KU's strength.

So the part that I have had a little trouble with the last day is on Friday Self alluded he had not done much to prepare them to play against the MUZ. I know little could have been implemented in a day or two. And I understand the philosophy you just do you and worry about what got you there and don't try changing what you do. But the fact remains that this team was not prepared to face a MUZ defense and had no solutions prepared for it. Driving and kicking was one thing they did try but because Bell owned the paint and could handle it on his own, it didn't really collapse the wings and created the open shots we normally see.

Even all that said--the team had their shots and just couldn't make 'em. Sad way to go home.

Napolean Hill identified this as transmutation of sexual energy.

Deep Dive : Session 1 • Mar 26, 2017 10:15 PM

@wissox today is the first day of about 7 straight months of traveling ball for two eldest. I find myself having similar thoughts as you did about your young lacrosse player. Both of my boys are fortunate enough to compete with great teams at a very high level, but I rarely lose sleep over their outcomes. It's an interesting double standard I have I suppose.

Why do we get so emotional after our teams lose? What does it say about us ?

And some food for thought

Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux • Mar 26, 2017 07:16 PM

@BeddieKU23 if Graham returns who runs point?

Preston has eligibility issues? So if he doesn't come we have Doke, Lightfoot, and Coleby ?

I have not kept up with recruiting at all. Can I get a summary ?

Billy Preston? Newman and Cunliffe. Marcus Garrett is next is 2 years away, Right?

We have been 1 dimensional all year.

Excellent 3

Average perimeter D

Below average interior d

Below average low post scoring

Below average free throw

All of those factored in last night

@Texas-Hawk-10 good point. Is that from their coach? I heard their post game was bad. Didn't watch it myself. Stem from contrasting leadership? Frank humble. Brooks an ass?

@betterfireE weren't they 6-2 6-2 6-4 6-7 and 6-9?

This is getting tiring. • Mar 26, 2017 04:32 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I agree on the driving. I said at about the 6-7 minute mark that they needed to start driving every play. I don't know why they didn't other than the fact that Bell completely owned the paint blocked everything in sight without even getting 2 fouls called on him all game. 8 blocks. That's big time.

As far as everything else goes: there is no explanation for the missed shots. Many were wide open looks and we just bricked them.

Part of the tightness could be attributed to 4 of the five starters experiencing last years elite 8 loss.

A big 'what if' I will always wonder is how much losing Josh 2 minutes into the game impacted the overall mentality. That second foul was bullsh**

This is getting tiring. • Mar 26, 2017 03:55 PM

@BShark How can you tell if coach was tight or not? Is it simply a direct correlation you draw between poor shooting?

This is getting tiring. • Mar 26, 2017 03:50 PM

@BigBad thats because they do. But Josh Jackson and Wiggins & the like are pretty decent scraps. We just don't get 2-3 of them every year. Our lack of a skilled scorer inside last night was a huge hole. You can blame that on Braggs lack of development.

This is getting tiring. • Mar 26, 2017 03:46 PM

I remember in 2003 when Roy missed all those free throws. That was annoying, too.

You really think 1-6 in the Final 4 is better than 2-7 in the E8?

What you said was he was 1 for 6 in the final four. I said he was not.

It looks like you meant to say he was 1 for 3 in the championship game.

There are realistically two coaches you would hire over Self--Coack K & Coach Cal

Both of those come with their baggage, too.

Self is in the top 5 of all active coaches in the country.

Cal is better than 1 and 6 in the Final Four
