@kjayhawks it's not about money to me, I get it. My mom won't get in rural KS, and most of that generation. I can't believe a top 10 ten team will probably only have 2 teams watching us. Duke, Kentucky, MSU they have to stream their games? Recruits gonna love this idea? I think this is a big step down for our program.

As of 2017, 77.5% of Kansas households had broadband subscriptions. 90% have access to broadband. Broadband access is above the national average. 91% of rural folks have broadband access. I’m sorry but I really can’t fault KUAD for taking more money to inconvenience less than 1 out of 10 households in the state.

And let’s be honest. Recruits don’t watch games that aren’t on Big Monday or Super Tuesday. Depending on their region, their families may not get SECN or ACCN. Anyone can get games on ESPN+, regardless of region. If you want a scapegoat for Big 12 TV access, look to Austin.

19-20 Schedule • Sep 18, 2019 08:54 PM

@Kcmatt7 100% agree. We all complained for years that we couldn't get channels a la carte but now we basically can for a cheaper price, and you can split costs like you said. I split my Netflix, Prime, and ESPN+ accounts with my sister so we get all that for less than $20/month. I have my own YouTube TV sub for $45. So $60/month gets me all the sports channels I want (sans NFL Network, but meh), all the cool stuff Netflix is doing, and Prime video. My internet is slightly more expensive than it was when I bundled it with cable but on net I'm saving about $30/month and getting better stuff to watch.

19-20 Schedule • Sep 18, 2019 07:57 PM

I really like ESPN+. The original programming is really good (Peyton's Places is hysterical, and of course Miles to Go). I also like how everything KU related is archived to watch on-demand, including Hawk Talk and all that. Pretty good bargain for $50/year.

Open league play 1/4 against WVU at home, which could be like pulling teeth. The @TCU @WVU week won't be any fun either. @KSU on Leap Day (CBS game of the week) will be wild.

Guy's let's see , try • Sep 18, 2019 07:05 PM

40,000 in the crowd. 31-27 WVU. I think we regress to the mean (i.e. not as bad as CC, not as good as BC) and don't have the horses to keep up for 4 quarters. Of course I thought we'd house CC and get run at BC so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

As an addendum, there's also federal legislation on the issue, introduced by Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC) and cosponsored by Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA). https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/116/hr1804/summary ↗

The bill would get rid of the NCAA's tax exempt status unless it allowed student-athletes to profit from their likeness, "Section 501(j)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 is amended by adding after the period at the end the following: "Such term does not include an organization that substantially restricts a student athlete from using, or being reasonably compensated for the third party use of, the name, image, or likeness of such student athlete."." I recommend getting in touch with your members of Congress if you really care about the issue.

Am I watching the Chief or the Jayhawks? • Sep 16, 2019 11:34 PM

I went back and watched the condensed game. A couple things stood out. The line did a great job at stoning BC at the LoS to get Juice and Pooka to the second level.

The playcalling was excellent. Liked that we ran more spread and used the I as a changeup. I also really liked how it complemented Carter’s strengths. Short passes, lots of rub routes to get guys loose. He made some dicey throws into tight windows but it worked. They still need to figure out better ways to use Pooka.

The defense was solid. Up front was iffy at times, but BC is probably the most physical team in the league not named Clemson. The secondary was terrific. Missed a couple picks, but really made life difficult for BC’s receivers. All in all, a different team than played against CC.

When a college jersey is sold with a player's name on it... how is that money divided? Does anyone know? What percentage goes to the school, the NCAA, the conference, cousin Vinny in the parking lot?

I agree with @justanotherfan and schools really need all those ShoeCo equipment deals and cash. But why do they need so much $$$? Yes... there are crazy costs in operating college sports, but there is crazy $$$ in all of this for the school. Let's not forget TV revenues.

I'd love to see the bottom line. What our AD brings in and what it spends. We are a State funded university. Isn't that knowledge public?

Technically they can't see jerseys with a player's name on it. They get around it by making each jersey customizable where the customer can pick the name and number.

Let me frame it this way. Since this is a free country and these athletic departments make money, why not let them invest some of that money in players in the form of additional wages? Why not let the players negotiate raises, like people do all the time in the labor market? Because let's be honest about it, it's already happening.

The NCAA already allows small stipends. So why not make it a free market and players get paid by the institutions themselves above and beyond what they're getting now? Sure it'll be incredibly unequal, but this is America and no other sports league guarantees an equal playing field. If you make money you should be able to spend it as you choose. The NCAA should embrace competition with the G League, NBL, etc. if they want to continue fielding a superior product.

The issue then is the NCAA isn't interested in competition, really. They're interested in making money hand over fist by holding onto this charade of amateurism and maintaining market power. I hope the California institutions do leave the NCAA and more follow. Just like there's a market for graduate and professional students, let's enhance the one that exists athletes. In addition to premier coaching, facilities, and a free education, let's provide a market for wages as well, since these players are key in making all the AD's and the NCAA gobs of cash. If the AD's want to spend, fine by me.

KU coaches meet with Thor

KU coach Self and assistant Kurtis Townsend on Thursday made a recruiting visit to the Atlanta area to see J.T. Thor, a 6-9 senior forward from Norcross (Georgia) High School. Thor, who visited Oklahoma State last weekend, will attend the Oct. 4 Late Night in the Phog as part of an official visit to KU. Georgia, UCLA and Kentucky are are also on his list of schools. He’s the No. 52-rated player in the recruiting Class of 2020 according to Rivals.com.

“At this point right now it is definitely Kansas. They’ve probably made him No. 1 priority the most,” Thor’s brother, Jal Thor, told Cats Illustrated. “Georgia has been on him very hard too. They’ve been calling every day. They’ve pretty much said, ‘You’re our No. 1 guy. We have Anthony Edwards, We need somebody to come in and do what he does just like you, and be on your way out.’ They’re kind of pitching that.’’

Jal Thor added: “Right now we’re kind of still up in the air. We’re listening to what everybody has to say. We want to see kind of what everybody else is doing because he wants to play with a really good guard. That’s why Oklahoma State is in there because they’re close with Cade Cunningham. UCLA has Daishen Nix. So he wants to play with good guards so he is watching that closely. Right now we’re just taking it slowly. He’s probably going to pick somewhere by November, but he probably won’t sign until late.”

Promising. Thor is the kind of piece would should be adding since the starting frontcourt is set for the next 3 years.

I'm assuming since we went in-home that KU is interested in him.

This is a strange cycle already. Do you get that vibe?

Super bizarre cycle. There's some rumors flying around that Cade Cunningham isn't done to Okie Lite and that UNC is actually his preferred destination. Only his brother is keeping them in contention. If that's true, could set off a domino effect of Love and/or Thompson getting pushed to KU.

2020 Recruiting • Sep 12, 2019 02:16 PM

The Love visit as scheduled isn't happening due to Team USA stuff. Will be rescheduled.

Would someone please tell Chris Klieman that he needs to stop winning. He can wait 3-5 years like all the rest of the coaches.

And if the 3-5 year waiting law works, why didn't we hang on to Beaty? He won 4 games last year (which is like 9 at any other college) and was very close to winning several more. By the "wait and see" rule, he should still be here.

Because he never made much on-field progress and left the roster as a smoldering crater. Bears repeating: still 15 under the lid of 85, less than a single full classes worth of underclassmen. Beaty went all in to save his job last year then promptly lost to Nicholls. /scene

2020 Recruiting • Sep 11, 2019 06:31 PM

Kalkbrenner is a really nice player. One of my best friends is at Purdue and told me he's THE GUY they want in that class.

2020 Hoops Targets • Sep 11, 2019 06:29 PM

I'd add Ryan Kalkbrenner, 6'10 210 pound C from St. Louis. KU's offer moved the needle.

@HighEliteMajor is correct. There is no antitrust case here. There are multiple opportunities to make a living playing basketball before one is eligible to play in the NBA. The NBL in Oceania explicitly provides opportunities where there is sufficient demand for players.

Football athletes don’t have much of a case either. It’s not like other leagues have taken their shot at the NFL and made it. Pro football is a natural monopoly in the US. You don’t have a positive right to compete in a sport professionally. The CFL has the same requirements, but obviously isn’t subject to US law. XFL 2.0 (as far as I know) is offering to sign underclassmen and high school players. Given that the NFL is collectively bargained under federal law, it’s a non-issue. If the XFL goes under again, ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I hope everyone calms down a bit. We all knew KU would be bad until Miles' recruiting is seriously established. People have gone from "probably 0-12" to expecting rapid improvement. A comeback victory last week got everyone thinking, "Just maybe..."

No, maybe not. Be patient. If you are really upset, perhaps the expectations are too high.

This is the right take. Mangino got worked by Bowling Green and UNLV his first year. Beaty and co. left the cupboard pretty bare. I’ll repeat what I’ve said in other threads. There’s just not that much talent.

That being said, the execution and playcalling wasn’t good. I do think it will improve as this staff figures out what they have. The defense is solid. I think Eliot is a keeper. We held them to under 300 yards and 5 yards per play. That’s pretty solid. I’m not sure what we have in MacVitte, but it seems like a good time to find out.

Week 2 predictions: I like 35,000 fans, a few more than this past week without a holiday and with Pooka back. I like Kansas in a 31-13 victory. I think the offense will look better and more in rhythm with Pooka. I think the play calls were pretty vanilla last week and will be this week because our knows better than showing a ton to BC. I hope we are able to cut down on the turnovers.

We’re on the same page. I’ve got 28-14. I do think Carter will play better.

2020 Recruiting • Sep 07, 2019 01:12 AM

@jayballer73 I think it’s a couple things. Obviously all the federal case BS hurt. @BShark is right, we would’ve gotten commitments from Tucker and Precious if not for Penny acting like he’s Tark the Shark. Another is the blessing/curse of the 2018 class. The staff absolutely killed it that year. Fall commits from Dave, Silvio (who later moved to 2017), Dotson, and Grimes. That essentially built the core and blocked some 2019 guys from playing time. Another is Doke’s injury. If you’re a big, why would you come to Kansas if there’s a decent chance two top 40 upperclassmen are coming back? We’re kind of in that situation in 2020. It’s not a done deal Ochai and Silvio leave after this year. Dave will likely return. If you’re Mady, MSU and BYU look a lot better from a PT standpoint since he’s signing in November. Finally, the lack of NBA studs compared to other blue bloods hurts. Who’s KU’s best perimeter player in the NBA? Wiggins? Yiiiikes. All these in a vacuum may seem relatively minor, but added together they leave KU out in the cold for a lot of top players.

2020 Recruiting • Sep 06, 2019 08:56 PM

I was thinking about this earlier. Even if we sign NOBODY (not at all likely) we can start Harris, Garrett, Ochai, Wilson, and McCormack. That's not a terrible team. Depth obviously would be an issue, but the fact is we don't need a ton of bodies just to have them. We can be somewhat choosy and take the guys that fit. I think Bryce Thompson is the best fit since he's the premier scorer among our guard targets and we're right in the thick of it for him. Heard his leaders are KU, UNC, and OU. This was a week or so ago so idk if anything has changed. We can also wait and see on Isaiah Todd, who'd be a great fit next to Dave. Get those two and it's a top 5 team again.

Parking Wars • Sep 06, 2019 08:51 PM

I'm with @DanR here. The downtown shuttles are great if you don't really want to do a ton of tailgating at the stadium. Also the side streets between campus and 19th street are free if you don't mind hoofing it over Mt. Oread

@HighEliteMajor I agree that journalism is in a bad way. If I’m ever back in Kansas during a buckets meetup I’ve got stories upon stories of journalistic malpractice from the Star.

Only point I’m making re: Newell is he still sells himself as a beat writer but doesn’t actually do that job. He’s basically an opinion guy now. Which is totally fine, I’m loathe to tell anyone what to print. Jesse just still says one every outlet he’s a straight reporter. Just be honest about it!

Bedore is an old fashioned reporter who values access, as most reporters do. I will gift credit to guys like John Hanna at the AP who also fits that mold. He was a pain in my rear end at one point but he was always fair and made the effort to get to know his subjects and be informed on the issues.
