There’s a connection with WKU and his guardian (Bassey is Nigerian) so he’ll be tough to land. Definitely need to check up on the guardian though.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 19, 2018 03:38 PM

Doke without question. No eligibility questions and he's going to have a fantastic year. I will say though that I love Bassey's game. He's a better passer, rebounder, and shot blocker than Doke. Just not a good interior scorer or defender yet.

Unfortunately for us, I think there will be some lucrative offers for Doke overseas. He is a project with a huge potential payoff. But besides that, he has a bit of a "circus side show" effect going for him as well.

"Come one come all and see this giant freak Dunk everything!" He will, at the very least, sell some tickets. I think that makes him a valuable commodity for an overseas team trying to get people to gain an interest in basketball.

There may be, but they'll be more lucrative a year from now. Self and company are terrific at developing bigs (Silvio being the recent example) and this will be Doke's first healthy summer in Lawrence. Look out.

Yeah I don't like this one bit...

I'm totally fine with Self going and meeting with him and doing due diligence. If they find sufficient red flags we won't keep recruiting him. They must think he's good to go if we're recruiting him now.

Recruiting Thread • Apr 19, 2018 03:14 PM

The timing on this is interesting. I don’t think KU is recruiting him as a 2018 guy yet. I also think it’s more Silvio insurance than Udoka insurance. Doke is never going to be a 30 MPG guy so Bassey can play around 20 MPG. That’s a monster post rotation.

What is the scoop on Doke?

Chances are he’s back unless he gets a guarantee to get drafted and a good shot at making a NBA roster.

I'm ok with that. I just want him to be able to stretch the floor.

He’ll get there. It’s not really his game yet but has the tools. He is a pretty good driver like Perry. Underrated handle.

Kcmatt7 said:

@BShark JRE = Perry 2.0 basically right?

He’ll be quite the luxury as a bench guy. I don’t think he’ll be any better than our 4th big, assuming Silvio and Dave are still at KU.

Someone do me a favor, ( assuming Silvio stays and is cleared & Doke stays ) what does our post rotation look like next season?

I realize that's a lot of IFs.
Personally I hope Silvio gets cleared and can play ball for us. I kind of believe his caretaker, whoever, that they didn't take any money from that Adidas agent guy.

Sure. Dedric and Doke start. Dedric will play 30+ and Doke hopefully 25ish. Silvio will be the first off the bench and can play the 4 or 5. KJ can play some 4 as well depending on the matchup. Dave will be the 4th or 5th big. He and Mitch will play sparingly. I agree with @BShark in that Mitch may consider taking a RS. Being 4th on the depth chart at your position isn’t a recipe for PT.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 18, 2018 08:50 PM

I think he’ll be back. He won’t get a combine invite so someone is going to have to take a flier

Zhaire Smith stays in the draft. Smart decision. Likely a Top 20 pick

Huge loss for the Big-12 and Texas Tech.

Figured, but will be interesting to see how Beard does w/o Evans and Smith.

He’s got Moore and DeShawn Corprew (one time plan B for Josh Jackson) coming in, so that’ll help. But definitely not as talented.

Picked up a CB pick for RJ Hampton.

Add Charles Bassey to that list as well. He’s rumored to be reclassifying to 2018. KU will be involved if Doke goes pro. 6’11 235 with a 7’3 wingspan. Terrific prospect.

Looks like he got some more WKU cb picks rolling in. I hope Doke stays, as good as Bassey is.

He can be swayed if there’s a starting spot available in not CUSA. Also assuming he gets cleared.

@BShark I’m really holding out hope for Stanley. There were rumors in the winter but there hasn’t been a lot since. But when these things happen, they tend to happen quickly, like Bagley last year. Haven’t heard anyone else really considering it.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 14, 2018 06:34 PM

Maxey isn’t going to reclassify. UK prefers him in 2019 to replace Hagans and/or Quickley. Probably means Green is sticking around.

The Doke situation is super quiet. Nobody is talking. I’m thinking he stays b

@FarmerJayhawk Romeo said that? - -where did you see that at? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

In the story announcing his decision day. Here’s the excerpt, ā€œLangford said that Tuesday's news involving Kansas in the FBI's investigation into college basketball won't impact his decision.ā€

@FarmerJayhawk So very true , pretty much what another friend of mine said when mentioning Louisville.- I guess in this particular case I'm just over reacting some maybe. - - With that being said I think it has come down to a two team race for him - - then Ku & Indiana -- I think Vanderbilt has kind of faded, they thought it would be more enticing to Romeo if they landed EJ Montgomery along with Garland and I know this isn't spelled right but Shittu . Now that Montgomery signed with Kentucky - and I read somewhere that Garland had made the comment after the Jordan Brand game that he didn't feel near as confident about Romeo - makes me think it's KU or Indiana. - - - ROCK CHALK ALLD AY LONG BABY

That’s my thought process too. In fact, Romeo just said the FBI ordeal doesn’t affect his opinion or KU’s chances at all. I’m taking him at his word.

@FarmerJayhawk Do you think we still have an Iron in this fire? - -I'm just afraid with these new things going down yesterday that it might be just enough to make him shy away from us - and land at Indiana - -I mean these things with the FBI is a big part of why he back off Louisville so why wouldn't he with us?

Oh definitely. I don’t think it affected our chances much, if at all. The difference between us and Louisville is they were already in deep trouble because of the strippers, then the Bowen thing came out with Pitino knowing about it. Totally different from our case in that we had no idea Preston or Silvio’s people took money.

It didn’t. This has been the plan all along. I heard first week of May awhile ago but this is close enough. It’s a Monday, so basically the first week of May.

Sounds like KU is kicking the tires on top 5 big man Charles Bassey. I'm sure they're treading carefully.

As weird as it is, isn't he pretty much a WKU lock?

Not a lock by any stretch. Programs are just doing their due diligence on him since there are possible red flags with his amateurism. Folks tend to steer clear of Rick Stansbury in recruiting.

@dylans I live in Chapel Hill now, and it’s definitely the south.

FBI • Apr 11, 2018 12:44 AM

If the NCAA does anything, they’ll give Silvio a slap on the wrist a la Selby. Worst possible case is the entire season suspension like Wiley at Auburn. But I think a semester may be a realistic expectation.

FBI • Apr 11, 2018 12:31 AM

@BShark good statement. Repeat the indictment’s language and say you’re good to cooperate with the investigation, and ignore the NCAA.

FBI • Apr 11, 2018 12:02 AM

The NCAA is going to clear Nas Little and Quinerly. We’ll be fine.

FBI • Apr 10, 2018 10:54 PM

I think KU is going to be fine. The first player is Billy, the second Silvio. They payments were intentionally hidden to defraud KU. It says specifically Silvio wanted to come to KU anyway.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 10, 2018 07:13 PM

Agreed. It wasn’t that long ago that it was actually the case. Randolph Morris went undrafted once and returned to Kentucky.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 10, 2018 07:01 PM

I will add there's a chance that the NCAA allows undrafted players to return to school this year. It might be in Sec. Rice's report to the NCAA that's due for release around the end of the month. In that case, I think Doke really should return, but have no problem with him testing and even going through the draft.

@BShark shot selection. If Dedric plays within the flow of the offense he can shoot a good percentage, a la Perry or the Morii.

2018-2019 Grad & Sitout Transfer Thread • Apr 10, 2018 06:40 PM

@Kcmatt7 good point. I'm not doing to discount Duke if Tre Jones is a OAD.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 10, 2018 06:38 PM

@BeddieKU23 This makes sense. I think the allure of the "superclass" at Vandy is fading. Vandy is going to be a lot better but not in the same zip code as Florida and UK. Even Auburn if Wiley comes back. All the recent buzz has been KU vs. IU.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 10, 2018 06:34 PM

I'd be really surprised if Doke even got a combine invite if he declares. If he does, it's probably to gauge overseas options as much as anything.

2018-2019 Grad & Sitout Transfer Thread • Apr 10, 2018 06:32 PM

@BeddieKU23 that wouldn't shock me. I'd think Cuse would be really strong if he did. KU won't have interest with Dotson already the guy for 19, and already having a similar player in Moore.

Reading rumors about Carey reclassifying to 2018. Somehow Duke pulled the same shit with Bagley last summer.

He’s not going to. He’s young for his class (born in 01) so reclassifying won’t get him to the NBA sooner. He’s not eligible for the draft until 2020.

Wonder if UK is going back to "platoons?"

Langford • Apr 09, 2018 03:21 PM

@BShark Vandy seems to be fading. Part of the appeal was EJ possibly going, and with that off the table, there's significantly less talent. Could all be a smokescreen and people grasping at straws though.

Langford • Apr 09, 2018 03:09 PM

At this point, I don't think anyone knows anything. There are some educated guesses out there, but the family isn't talking.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 08, 2018 05:37 PM

Oh well. We’ll be more than fine with Silvio, JRE, and hopefully Hurt. Not to mention the possibility of Dante.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 08, 2018 02:58 PM

We’ll see when he announces his top 5 today. I think the 5th is us or UNC.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 08, 2018 04:23 AM

I agree. Kind of a bummer Self didn’t get to try to sway him this summer.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 08, 2018 03:16 AM

Vernon Carey will have his top 5 tomorrow. Guessing Duke, Miami, Michigan State, UK, and UNC.

Langford • Apr 07, 2018 09:18 PM

Was told today to expect an announcement the first week of May and it’ll be KU. Not 100% sure of its reliability since the family has said late April, but we’ll see!

In my experience, the Feds don’t leak when they’re going to bust someone. They just do. So it’s up in the air.

Probably Going to Move On From Zach Harvey • Apr 07, 2018 02:28 AM

@jayballer73 no doubt he’s better than Harvey. He can guard 1-3 so we can get him if Grimes is a OAD. If not, it’ll be Dotson, Grimes, Garrett.

Probably Going to Move On From Zach Harvey • Apr 07, 2018 12:57 AM

@jayballer73 I don’t disagree. The nice thing about the class is there’s A LOT of perimeter talent KU is in a good spot with. Look for KU to really turn up the heat on Cassius Stanley this summer if they aren’t comfortable with Harvey’s situation.

Quick rundown on Stanley: elite, elite athlete out of LA. Going to be hard to get him to leave town. But he’s also skilled for an athlete of his caliber, and big at 6’5. Has a good enough handle to play the 2 at KU, and has legitimate playmaking ability. Jumper is a work in progress, but has one of the highest ceilings of any guard in the 19 class.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 06, 2018 05:26 PM

@BShark I agree. I think Grimes is going to be around for that year as well. Definitely not sold on him being a OAD. Hurt with 2 years of Hudy will be a NPOY candidate.
