@Kcmatt7 college basketball officiating is tremendously awful
How hard is it for a veteran team to get one of their star players the last shot?
@Kcmatt7 just like Wisconsin
Gradey
@Kcmatt7 agreed
@Woodrow how is being able to hit an open free throw line jumper any different than the stuff heās been adding lately? Anything that makes the team harder to guard is GOOD. I guess weāll have to agree to disagree
@benshawks08 at that point, it comes down to how good are the individual defenders a team has. If thereās a weak link, then thatās a huge problem against a team that is a threat at all five spots.
@Woodrow well he did with his mid range jumper and free throws so why not a foul line jumper??
@Woodrow none that I can recall, but he is improving rapidly and that includes his shooting. Itās just a matter of time before he starts hitting those shots.
@drgnslayr yep! Itās no coincidence our only loss occurred when he barely played.
@Jethro I agree. The only losses i think we get are at ISU and maaaaaybe at TCU. People are so worried about TCU and their running game - but isnāt that when Selfs teams are at their best? I mean TCU is good, Iāve been watching them a bit but itās nothing we havenāt seen before and definitely a winnable game there on a decent shooting night. 6-2 is definitely realistic and with decent shooting 7-1 is possible.
I think itās pretty telling for him to call it out like he did. He seems to be a level headed guy and finds it distasteful. Wouldnāt be surprised at all if he doesnāt stick around long.

Imagine a game with Purdue?
If we run, itās a double digit win. Purdue is slow and Edey would have no chance of covering KJ, especially if KJ starts hitting 17 footers.
Anyone see his press conference remarks about how K State fans should approach the rivalry game? He really put the rivalry into proper perspective, which I suppose is always easier when youāve won a national title. Very impressed with how he handles his business, with his type of coaching he may not last there too long.
ā I know I'm going to upset some people. I feel like we, the Kansas State community and family, allow them to live rent free in our heads way too much."

@jayballer67 any 1 seed is good no extra pressure if you are the true 1 or not. The guys donāt think about that they just want the best draw to get to the final 4. Fans think about this stuff way more than the players/coaches do.
Correct. The one seeds have the chance by far of getting to the final four and winning the title. Definitely the seed you want to get
Come on guys, no need for going for each otherās throat. We are all passionate about basketball and this is a great site to do that, no need for any hostilities. Thatās one of the nice things about here compared to other sites - the others are always derailing threads with a bunch of stupid shit and personal attacks and it makes for a worthless read. Just my $.02

@HawkChamp Self isnāt gonna ever say we are due for a loss itās āwe gotta play better and that wasnāt our best game ectā.
The due for a loss wouldnāt be said if we were holding serve at home winning by 8-12 but weāve squeaked out wins against some average big 12 teams (minus isu) so thatās signs for concern.
Juan didnāt score yesterday
Kevin doesnāt draw iron half the time and is so down on himself right now because heās shooting poorly
Gradey canāt create his own shot
JWās shooting has cooled off
KJ is the bright spot just carrying us right now - words I never thought Iād type
Due for a loss because if we continue this play on the road, without AFG magic and the opposing team shoots just average we will lose by 6-10
What you just explained is we are due for a game where things go our way. Time will tell.
I donāt get when people say āweāre due for a lossā. Judging by Selfs postgame presser yesterday, he wouldnāt either. The way I look at it, we will need a couple good shooting nights during this stretch - TCU and at ISU in particular.
Personally, Iām not as concerned with the game at home with TCU. They like to run, well guess what, our guys can too. TCU is not that good in the half court, well our guys have the ability to execute well in the half court. The part that concerns me also is a KSU hot shooting night Tuesday. Hopefully theyāve cooled off.
Self was also saying yesterday, in a nutshell, that every team we play is giving it 110% to try to beat us. He said that people sometimes expect more than winning by 3 or something like that, which he said can be valid, but they have to keep it in perspective.
Folks, outside of maybe WVU at home, there will probably not be any blowout or double digit wins until the tournament. The competition is too good and while we like the team. and they are obviously a final four contender, they are not some historically dominant team that is going to win big with how tough the conference is. Just enjoy the season and let Self work his magic.
Like I said yesterday, not impressed by UConn

@BShark I mean, Tennessee beat us by 14 but after looking at their entire body of work and the way in which we lost, I donāt think theyāre the better team. Iāve also watched UConn a bit and just donāt see the same potential as Alabama has at all. UConn has also lost 3 of their last four games. But anyway, itāll all get sorted out in March.
Tennessee shot 12-27 from 3 against us. Harris fouled out in less than 20 minutes of play on questionable calls (and one obviously bad charge call) in a very physical game. Pettiford left early with injury and only played 3 minutes. A lot of things went wrong for us that game.
Today Tennessee shot 3-20 from 3, but they also missed like 5 or 6 completely wide open lay-ups. Like not contested lay-ups at all. I've never seen anything like that before, it was bizarre. Tennessee should have won that game.
Like I said early today, you simply canāt count on a Rick Barnes coached team. Especially for post season success. I will say though Iām glad we do have a loss, wouldnāt want the media constantly talking us up for being undefeated.
@Texas-Hawk-10 leave Purdue off that list and I think itās solid.

Oregon stomping Arizona.
@BShark UConn and UCLA are pretty good, but as far as potential and ceiling are considered, Alabama is definitely a notch above them. I think theyāre the only team we couldnāt beat if both teams are playing at their best.
That said, I think we have a better chance to advance farther due to knowing how to close out close games due to coaching and how to win when youāre not blowing your wad from three. Got to save those for the elite eight and final four.
K State maybe cooling off a bit?

They were 12-27 from 3 against us
Iām shocked I tell you, totally shocked. (Implied sarcasm font)
Yep, Tennesseeās O has never been very good under Barnes and will be the reason they donāt make it to the second weekend once again. Iād love a rematch with them but it aināt gonna happen.
I think Alabama is the better team and has a higher ceiling.
Just like every year, Tennessee struggles to score. When they hit shots like they did against us, they look great. When they donāt, they are a quick out in March.
@BeddieKU23 I second the motion. Nuff said
@Kcmatt7 that is interesting, impressive but still lots of games to be played of course.

Hope it isn't the case but we better be ready for a trap game. We just come off the road with two big victories and we didn't look good in our home opener against OSU.
We shot the lights out in WV... could it trigger a cold game at home?
I hope I'm off base!
Dragon, don't buy into this trap game nonsense. we simply will not be overlooking Oklahoma. thats silly. no game in the league will be overlooked. if guys aren't motivated when on the floor, i hope they find a quick seat on the bench, next to Brady.
Agreed, Iām sure Self has engrained into the team how tough the conference is. Plus, I wouldnāt consider 11-24 from three to be āshooting the lights outā, just a good shooting night. I mean, this is actually a pretty good shooting team, so that number isnāt surprising at all.
Self said he is a very good shooter in practice, was only a matter of time before it started translating to games.
@drgnslayr said in West Virginia Game Saturday:
Most of the time... bad interior defense doesn't start with being undersized. That's how it ends. Meaning... if you have size you can sometimes makeup for other defensive mistakes.
In our case... KJ doesn't have that option so his key is to not make those early defensive mistakes. What I'm talking about is footwork. Being able to stay in position while the opposing big hits you with his "shake-n-bake" or whatever. Usually it involves some kind of pivot move.
The key for KJ is to use his speed (and brain) to hedge and anticipate properly in the low post. Most of this will come from scouting and watching opposing bigs on tape. Bigs play a predictable game! Also, KJ is small, but he does have strength and must use it to not get pushed around too much.
We could show a little weakness in March on those second games in the weekend when we don't have time to prepare for a specific team. Maybe we face a big with great moves and KJ isn't ready.
As you Said, even when you face a bigger team, specially in the post area, the undersized team is by no means helpless. Just use the same concepts that Villanova did in 2016 and 2018. I may be proven wrong in March, but I truly believe this team has the saavy and coaching to do something similar.
As soon as Bill fully adopted 4-out basketball we've been to a FF, had the consensus best team in 2020, won the title in 2022, and are absolutely one of the best 4 teams in the country at this moment.
He may have been later to adopt it than we would have liked, but damn do I love that he saw the light. Shoot a ton of 3s and use your athleticism on D and in transition. It's been so fun to watch, but even better it has been effective. When you are KU and you can have 6 guys on your team that are 6'5 and above and shoot the 3 better than 33% you should use that to your advantage. Because the reality is most teams don't have that luxury...
Really hope he wins 1 or 2 more before he goes.
I would also count the 2016 and 2017 elite eights too, as both of those teams really embraced the three ball and playing outside in quite a bit.
I'm not an expert, but I think Self and staff have incorporated new schemes and actions that require the passing and this new stuff is partly why they are confounding some opponents. It looks like there are some NBA sets.. They spread the floor out which pulls the defense. If they don't come out, you hit a few threes and then see what happens. Anyway, when the floor is spread, it leads to skip passes that pull the defense and lots of cutting opportunities.
Really, you can only do this if you have the right kind of players -- quickness (everyone) and no fewer than 3 (4 is better) reliable three-point threats (Dick, Wilson, Harris, McCullar). You don't have to have size inside, but you have to have athleticism and skill (KJ)
The Big 12 teams have had enough time and film to find some ways to counter. For those games, there's more reliance on our (superior) shooting and athleticism.
You are correct. The spacing, ball movement, shooting and posting up guards is all NBA/modern basketball oriented.
@drgnslayr Bill has been terrific. The way he has helped KJ be a legit threat to score makes this team similar to the 2018 Nova team. He already has range out to the free throw line for sure. Damn, what if he has a three point shot??? Iām sure that is something he has been working on. I mean seriously, if all of a sudden we have five legit three point threats on the floor, who is going to beat this team?

Game highlights for me -
I hope we are seeing a trend... Jayhawk grit on the road! This game was never in question, even in the second half when down to two possession lead. Why? Because we maintained excellent composure! When they fought back we hit big shots and had defensive stops to prevent them from huge runs.
5 guys in double-figures? Are you kidding me? We've got such an even attack now even with a volume shooter like JWil...
Speaking of JWil... his scrap, especially on the boards, needs to be recognized! Between him an Kevin we shouldn't lose many boards wars. This is becoming more dominant as the season progresses because this team is BUYING IN to Self ball!
This is a perfect year to have the Big 12 be as tough as it is. I have no problem if we drop some conference games... it should help us build a tougher team for March. Having a team that is starting to look like road warriors is a huge advantage come March. I just hope we hold serve in AFH!
This is becoming perhaps the most-satisfying team to watch under the Bill Self era! When we execute, it's a thing of beauty!
Gradey... what a weapon! We hang in games and then suddenly he pumps in a few treys and punches up our lead! Wow! And then another example where he followed his shot and rebounded! Who else does this in college basketball?
Bobby! Can't stress his contribution enough! 18 minutes produced 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists... He outright won a game for us early on this season and he'll win us more this year just by contributing throughout a game!
Pace of game? Does it matter anymore? We know we can run. We can also execute well in the half court!
I'm happy and I still see plenty of room for improvement between now and March!
Yes pace still matters - we have to play fast whether itās in the half court or making it a full court game. Itās exactly what happened against Nova in the final four last year.
@benshawks08 said in West Virginia Game Saturday:
@benshawks08 the third option would be self has decided to use the Remy Martin strategy. Which is actually just the Malik Newman strategy. Keep a guy under wraps and then break him out on Feb March so no one has any tape on how to stop him. For a while I thought this was possible with rice. I donāt actually now.
Things are always possible until they arenāt.
KJ spraying in those free throw jumpers has been an excellent addition and makes us even harder to guard. I like it a lot
@AsadZ yep should ideally be peaking in the Big 12 tournament/going into the Big Dance.
McCaffrey is such a small little man. I mean really, yelling at the opposing coach during a game? What an imbecile
@BShark i guess im still at a loss on why everyone thought Zach or Cam would amount to much this year. In their time here, Iāve just never thought they had the same potential as those in front of them - neither of them look like big time college basketball players to me.
KJ doesnāt have the same power or aggressiveness when driving to the basket at someone like Julius Randle, but I think he has the potential to get even better at it and be a respectable long range shooter. He already has a good touch from 10-15 feet, so no reason he couldnāt expand that a bit. Iām really excited about how heās progressed and the matchup problem he creates for bigger teams. So many are worried about playing a ābig teamā š¤£š¤£. I guess those people havenāt learned anything from UConn or Villanova.
I really like how Self is using KJ, even tho it has been out of necessity this year. We are so mobile and fast at all positions that unless the other team has a very mobile 5 man, itās really difficult to cover KJ. Especially now that he has shown really good passing and shot making from the mid range area, the other team has to cover all 5 spots all over the floor. My dream would be if KJ develops even more of an outside shot over the course of conference play. Not sure if thatāll happen but itād almost make the offense unguardable.
@BShark said in KU/Oklahoma St Game Thread:
Saw some people comparing KJ to Jamari. We can stop that right now.
Honestly, and I may be off here, but to me a great comparison for KJ is Mark Vital.
@BShark yeah itās not even a comparison at this point. Heās a totally different and better player and will only continue to improve.
Two I think
@dylans thatās awesome when you think about it - both championships came when the final fours were mostly filled with blue bloods. Amazing when you think about it.
Iāve always thought, as others have too, that Bill was going to pull a Roy and really figure out the tourney later in his career and start racking up more final fours and championships later in his career. The last seven years have solidified that opinion and I still think he wonāt retire until he wins one more title. He talked last tournament about us needing to win more championships, and I think in the next five years he does that, then rides off into the sunset.
@drgnslayr said in 2022-23 stats-PER, Kenpom etc:
Glad to see someone else think like me that we can win another title, back-to-back!
But it's a long season.... let's hope we stay healthy!
That Indiana game came at the right time... with us having to defend the paint. Spending the week working on that was not only brilliant but helping us for the entire year defend down low (which was questionable until now). We are starting to play like a really good Nova team!
Youāre right, it is definitely a possibility. Other teams have done, why couldnāt we?
I also like the Nova comparisons. As you and I have talked about numerous times, the size of the team you have doesnāt matter if the players are skilled enough to negate that disadvantage. Thatās how Nova beat Roy in 2016 in spite of Carolinaās vastly superior post presence.
A couple things I saw in the final four that Self used that give me confidence going forward is the trapping and posting up guards, both classic staples of Jay Wrights teams that we ALWAYS struggled with, and now we are not only doing it to other teams but defeated Nova using their own game plan! That first half defense against Nova was literally a combo of the 2008 champs and Novas 2016 team - very impressive.
@Jethro the reason I say it was our best is because it was completely in the half court and played how Nova wanted it and we still crushed them. Baylor had a ton of transition points and easy buckets.
