Should have won in regulation but thought they would give the fans some extra entertainment and excitement.

There was definitely a racial element involved in Gill not getting the Auburn job.

Yes, there was but perhaps not in the way you see it. The NCAA had strongly "suggested" that programs needed to interview a minority candidate, much like pro teams have to, and by many accounts that was the reason he was granted an interview at Auburn but he really had no chance of getting the position; Auburn hired up and coming Gene Chizik from P5 program ISU who went be named Coach of the Year. Gill had been a legacy and position and Assistant Head Coach at Nebraska for 12 years and and the program was intimately familiar with his coaching talent and still did not get the position which is telling.

Those 20 wins in 5 years were double what Buffalo had done in the previous 7 years since they had joined the FBS. That’s not smoke and mirrors. Winning consecutive division championships is not smoke and mirrors either.

His record at Buffalo was 2-10, 5-7, 8-5 and 5-7 and conference was 1-7, 5-3, 5-3 and 3-5 for an overall and very pedestrian 20-30 record and if you read the Whitlock piece you will see that in 2008, his best season, he had the perfect storm of luck to get to 8-5...and i mean extreme luck when even highly improbable things break your way.

As I mentioned, I believe Coach Gill is an extremely good and well rounded individual, but as coach, his ceiling is Buffalo or Liberty.

Nope, the sky is fine. If you read my post I indicated I favor Massey who has KU as #4 behind Michigan, Gonzaga and Duke which I believe is about right.

@approxinfinity

Virginia is an interesting team that as long as it can impose its (slow) tempo it can beat any team but also it can easily be beaten by any other team. When you are playing the #315 schedule out of 353 teams you better have damn good numbers; KU is playing the #9 hardest schedule so its numbers are naturally not be nearly as good.

You can compare Virginia to a semi truck racing a smaller car on a narrow road that goes uphill and half way it starts to go downhill. As long as it stays in front it can block the smaller car and win, particularly when it gets to the downhill portion where gravity allows it to go very fast and pull away. However, if the smaller car gets in front the chances of catching it , despite all its power. UMBC got in front of them last year and Virginia could not catch it and UMBC continued to pull away and won by 20 in the greatest upset in the tournament history.

After all of yesterday's games this is how the 3 top computer polls stand for the top 10 spots.

Pomeroy:

Here is Sagarin:

!0_1544381298613_upload-f5b27996-666e-4e34-92db-f7448cd591fb ↗

and Massey:

!0_1544381342292_upload-1703cc0d-7f86-4181-82e1-00f12dfc14b8 ↗

Can someone explain to me all the love for Virginia? Both KU a and Virginia have the same overall record, 8-0, According to Sagarin KU has more wins against top 25 teams (2 vs 1), against top 50 teams (3 vs 2) and KU's SOS is #9 while Virginia is an embarrassing #315 and yet Virginia is ranked ahead of KU. Pomeroy has also Virginia ranked ahead of KU. I understand it is still pretty early and the rankings will get better with more data but they should at least pass the reasonableness test. At this time and based on what I have seen to date I like the Massey ranking best. Thoughts?

@HighEliteMajor @Texas-Hawk-10

I met Coach Gill at one of the KU football tailgate parties and had a chance to visit with him. I told him that as long a he beat MU and KSU and makes KU bowl eligible most fans would be happy. His answer was...I believe we can do better that that. He seemed like genuinely good person but you need a much more of a disciplinarian to lead a major football program; obviously his style fits better at a place like Liberty where players are students first and athletes second.

Apparently there was little control in a lot of areas where program personnel is normally involved to keep player on the straight and narrow and was left up to the individual instead and resulted in a number of them being in academic jeopardy. When Weis took over a number of players with serious academic issues were dismissed from the team. Like I mentioned, Coach Gill's approach likely works better at a place like Liberty but not necessarily at KU.

I was not happy when Coach Gill was hired since i believed his record at a mid-majot was pretty average at best and his best season was all smoke and mirrors and a number of lucky breaks as outlined in an excellent and very telling contemporary article written by Whitlock. Had Gill stayed, KU would have been in serious academic jeopardy as per NCAA standards.

When 50% FT shooting wins the game • Dec 09, 2018 04:40 PM

The refereeing crew was not good, particularly calling fouls. Some obvious fouls were not called and other that were not even borderline were. New Mexico got away with a lot or reach in fouls and KU really did not take advantage of the way calls were going but then, with calls being so inconsistent, it is hard to determine whether to play aggressively or not.

UH-OH - Sounds like trouble in Aggieville • Dec 09, 2018 04:33 PM

@kjayhawks

Behind the friendly, grandfatherly facade lies a ruthless individual that controlled and ruled the program with an iron fist and stayed long after he should have retired because KSU would not acquiesce to his demand that his son be named to succeed him. The new coach better have an ironclad clause in his contract that Snyder will not interfere. I am sure Snyder lurking behind the scenes will keep some potential coaches away.

New Mexico State Game Thread • Dec 09, 2018 04:24 PM

@HighEliteMajor

I believe the charge call on Grime early in the game that invalidated the basket and gave him a foul took the wind out of his sails; he had been playing with purpose up to that point.

A couple of days ago I made a comment that Doke is the perfect match for some teams and a poor one for others and you asked if KU should not play him and I don't believe I answered that question because there is really no answer.

While Doke can be a defensive liability against smaller teams that score from the outside since he does not defend well against team that stretch the floor, he would be extremely effective on offense against the same team since every time he gets the ball inside, and at the rate he scores from there, particularly against smaller players, it would certainly result in points. You have to weigh his contribution at each end and determine how much he plays on a game and opponent basis. Last night KU desperately needed Doke as New Mexico was scoring and rebounding at will inside without a big inside presence to prevent it.

Kemper and surrounding area (except for the Golden Ox) was a dump with not a good seat in the house, The Sprint Center is the opposite, good view even from the cheap seats and the Power and Light District is orders of magnitude better.

Attended many Big 8 games at Kemper and have good memories of the games but not necessarily of the place.

Poor Silvio • Dec 08, 2018 07:01 PM

@HighEliteMajor

The question is...would the FBI be able to share information that is not public with the NCAA which is not a government or law enforcement agency? I can see all kinds of privacy issues being raised but I don't know what the applicable law is in this area. The FBI and other government agencies have refused to disclose information about wrong doing by government officials while doing government work and being paid by taxpayers, so I would think it would be hesitant to disclose information to a non-government agency about private citizens doing things that violate NCAA regulations but don't necessarily break the law.

The saga continues...frankly, I would be shocked if Silvio is cleared to play college basketball before he decide to either go to the G League or overseas; apparently at one time he had a contract to play in Spain so that might still be a potential destination. At this time, I will guess that KU knows this will the case and has no hopes that Silvio will play but as long as there is a scholarship available it send a message to potential recruits that KU stands by them and gives KU players a capable big for practice.

Les Miles Coaching Staff • Dec 08, 2018 06:46 PM

OK. I am not sure the state can support two quality programs at the same time. Their 15 minutes of fame or Decade of Dominance or whatever they called it are gone and now the pendulum has swung back to KU.

Les Miles Coaching Staff • Dec 08, 2018 03:27 PM

@HighEliteMajor

That would be huge if it happens; it certainly place the state of Kansas smack in the epicenter of football seismic activity. The question is...would KSU be a temporary stopover, ala Huggy, to get back in good graces with the football powers that be and a stepping stone to a better program or a semi permanent destination?

UH-OH - Sounds like trouble in Aggieville • Dec 08, 2018 03:17 PM

@justanotherfan

I agree. Any coach considering the position should have it as part of the contract that there will be no interference or influence from Snyder. I understand that it is difficult to cut all ties with a coach that did so much for the program but keeping him as an “ambassador” and maintaining ties with the program could end up being a bad decision moving forward.

Poor Silvio • Dec 08, 2018 03:11 PM

@HighEliteMajor

I agree that a fully empowered investigator can get a lot of information and extrapolate as you indicated. The problem for the NCAA is that it has no authority to compel anyone outside of program personnel to produce any records, cooperate or even talk to them so even the basic information an investigator would require might not be available or reliable.

The end result is that the entire investigation goes into limbo. Despite assurances to the contrary, looks like Falmagne has not been forthcoming, the NCAA will no render a ruling and the only option KU has is to either not play Silvio or dismiss him all together which would have horrible optics. Falmagne apparently got the money, Silvio gets to practice against high level competition and gets valuable training by some of the best trainers in the business, all expenses paid, and likely will go pro at the end of the season...and KU gets the shaft.

Pooka • Dec 08, 2018 02:37 PM

Athletes need to learn very quickly that they will always be targets of people that feel like they want take them down a notch or two, in the case of amateur/college stars, or want a big pay day from pro athletes. They need to learn two basic rules:

  • Pick your friend wisely and don’t put yourself in situation that lead to trouble.
  • If you find yourself in a bad situation...walk away; staying is a no win situation.

If Kareem Hunt or Pooka would have followed these two rules they would not be in the situations they are with their current careers in serious jeopardy.

$1244.00 • Dec 08, 2018 02:17 PM

@wissox

The “official” version at the time is that KU chose not to hire outside counsel to defend the relatively minor offense of Brown paying for a plane ticke for Askew and it cost KU dearly. That particular offense was so minor that the NCAA started a program to help students in similar situations.

Years later we found out that were several other, considerably more serious offenses, that brought KU within a hair of getting the dreaded “death penalty” and it was the real reason which made it impossible for Brown to stay and “had” to go. Brown had also left UCLA, the program he coached before KU, on probation and the next time he coached college, at SMU, he left that program on probation as well.

As good a coach and basketball mind as Brown is, he also seems to have a complete disregard for rules and regulations and this is why I prefer he stays away from KU. Apparently he is an advisor to Fenny Lalmagne and this ought to tell you a lot.

@mayjay

Could be, his final 3 were Florida State, KU and UK before he decided to go to the NBA instead.

@mayjay

Moses Malone was going to Maryland and when he decided to go pro left them without the key piece of the powerhouse team it had assembled. Maryland fans still hate him.
