KUBUCKETS IS MY FACEBOOK • Sep 24, 2014 02:54 AM

I read somewhere that if you are not easily found on Facebook you were not legit as a professional, and such a person might not have credentials or something to hide.

I for one have nothing to hide, but I think moving to a new location in a market I wasn't well known in has hurt me because I am not on Facebook. Previously I was always on our company website as a staff member but never set myself up with a personal page and I know others who didn't either.

I will say I was a bit of an expert in another market previously with 30 years under my belt-I miss being one of the smartest guy in the room-but at least I am still putting bread on the table for my family

KUBUCKETS IS MY FACEBOOK • Sep 24, 2014 02:19 AM

I set one up for my family a few years ago, so my kids moved on from there,so neither my wife or I have seen it for years and I don't know how to look at it.

Ditto Flyer,
I knew very little about KU sports before I got to KU in the 70's.
Mostly Track, some bBall, and football, but fortunately KU success in all three of.those sports raised NCAA/Big 8 recognition while I was there.

I've learned through osmosis for several decades but this site has done wonders to elevate my bBall IQ over the past year.

We have some serious talent here. The nice thing is we have a civil forum and sometimes we learn a thing or two that isn't 100% bBall.
I'm sure even HCBS doesn't think 100% bBall all day long.

The closest I came to a Mossman Guitar was a Mossman Guitar T-shirt I bought at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield. Around 1980. At the time the hottest group was named something like Dedannon-out of Ireland. I have their album somewhere. Now a red '66 corvette with white convertable top is high on my list.

Speaking of UK players.

After watching the bodyslam on Joel, he had this coming. Just about my favorite moment of the season.

KU recruits Illinois better than Illinois • Sep 17, 2014 08:00 PM

At 35 I left Kansas for an better career opportunity in my field. I was also motivated by the weather. A trip to Australia in January (summer down under) was enough to convince me to move to the sun belt. Oil & Gas work put me in California & Texas where I've been able to keep working. But I've always been back every summer to see family and friends. Kansas is a great place, and the people are wonderful.

Alaska. Everyone should visit at least once. Just the drive from Anchorage to Seward is a special experience. Much of the 120 mile drive is nothing but beautiful wilderness. Other than your vehicle and the road you are driving on there isn't a hint of man or civilization anywhere around you. I drove an hour without seeing another car.

And as a tie in back to recruiting. I flew my father in from KC to join us. Mario Chalmers was on the plane with him having just finished a KU visit. We were very tempted to speak to him, but I was afraid it might violate some NCAA rule.

You brought back. Some great. Memories. I love the artists/ songs you named but I can't get my kids interested in all of then. Still, I still play my favorites with my kids in the car-my daughter is 16 and I am near 60, yet we play Beachboy's songs in the car driving home from soccer games and sometimes sing a few together.

As for my son we connect on a great album called "Round Up". With Erich Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops. Look into this CD and it's follow-up. It is phenomenal.

When Ted Owens was on the hot seat we fired Miranda and the other coach whose name escapes me. That bought Owens a few more years. I don't know if Owens threw them under the bus, or the AD was micro managing but what I took from that is AD's watch the entire staff.

@nuleaf,
Yesterday was my first day back after 9 days across the pond, so I blew the afternoon off to make the list and listen-The nice thing is you can find just about all of them on YouTube rather than search through albums & records.

@jaybate-1.0
Nice addition-I tend to sort my county songs in Louise's (formerly on Mass.) Along with your tune, Are you sure Hank done it this way? - Bob Wills is still the King, Faster Horses, Goodhearted Woman.

And I have another group of bands for The Mad Hatter where you could dance. The Commodores, Barry White, The O'Jays, Stevie Wonder, KC & the Sunshine Band, The Spinners, Earth Wind & Fire, Harold Melvin and the Blue notes.

Put this all together with some music from the 60's and 80's and you've got something very special. IMHO, our children were robbed of good music.

And I. Would love to hear about favorite tunes from anyone else per Nuleafs post.

I remember fall track practice at Memorial stadium and seeing the boot camp bBall players running down the sidewalk below the campanile down to the track and up the and down some of the stadium stairs. We track jumpers ran those stairs too but we had to wear 40 pound weight vests so I don't have any sympathy for bBall boot camp. (Memories from an old fart.)

  1. Go to the wheel and watch the eye candy.

  2. Have at least two cold ones.

  3. Proceed to the jukebox and play the following to bring back sweet KU memories. (Disclaimer-some of you may not care for the disco stuff-but it was big with many at the time)

Some player nicknames... • Sep 15, 2014 01:50 PM

Svi and Landen are my favorite names on your list-thanks for starting my day with a smile

So you've lived in two of the sunniest and low humidity spots in the US (and planet for that matter.) we are almost done with the summer here (and boy does, summer here suck), but the next 6 months are just great weather wise.

Vailhawk
That's pretty funny. My kids were born here, but I am not a texas native.
We moved to SoCal when they were infants and moved back here just before they started middle school and they both consider themselves Californians-mostly because we were walking distance from the beach and were in the water most weekends. None the less I raised them to be Jayhawk fans. RCJH.

welcome to the fold "choice".

This is my favorite site, bar none. This board is great year-round which really helps me keep informed (I live in Texas.). Luckily its Friday Night Lights season down here so I have a distraction to get me through a few months before the season starts. And yes, I'm a total old fogey guy too.

Is the time stamp wrong, or did you really post this at 4 in the morning?

Not thAt I need more KU gear but I will buy your shirt in XXL on day one of your offering-the least I can do to say thanks for your efforts and by the way this became my favorite website some time ago.

Just checking KU Buckets after a stroll through the Red Light District in Amsterdam. I just looked at the goods-I am lucky I didn't read this Olivia post before I went on that stroll.

Throwing around ideas • Sep 03, 2014 01:03 PM

Aprrox and bskeet (and others if I left them out) are most appreciated indeed. I don't Facebook either. I also remember civil hawk keeping things civil early on. One thing I love about this site is the civil tone.
That and I learn from others on a regular basis.

Down here in the land of Friday night lights (Texas) bBall is only an afterthought for most the population. On top of that the radio and TV station adds are cramming SEC network down our throats every day thanks to the A&M traitors. They even have big billboards in Austin near the UT campus that say "This is SEC country." What a bunch of d*cks.

Thanks for posting. Living here on Houston I will make it a point to watch him-and see a game. I saw Morris play too.. I don't follow the NBA, but I do check in at times for Jayhawks.. RCJH

@brooksmd
Thank you and yours for all they've done. The fighting SEABEES is a favorite movie of mine-although that's one of the few movies the Duke died in.

Okay, you have a point at the last 5 years KU (oranges) but for the 16 year UCONN sample (apples) I would take Uconn in a heartbeat.
But for the history day 1 forward it is KU all the way.

Please help with the link-this is a great story of support for our fallen troops.

Great story, never knew this happened, did not hear any news coverage of it.

He was great at Late Night in the Phog last year!

For what it's worth, here is what I know about my grandfather in WWII.
He served with Merrill's Marauders behind enemy lines in the jungles of Burma. This group had a high mortality rate. Many had Malaria and dysentery. Of the 2,750 that entered Burma, only two were left alive that hadn't been hospitalized with wounds or major illness. That unit was given a presidential citation and eventually became the 75th Ranger Regiment.

His medals were passed on to me and include a Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star. There was a movie made about this group-if memory serves Jeff Chandler starred in it. Unfortunately I never met him but what I've read about that unit tells me he/they suffered and sacrificed a lot. They used mules and were not outfitted as they should have been. Rations did not have near enough calories to keep them going.

@drgnslayr
I think kids graduating high school should watch "Private Ryan" -It would be nice if they could edit some of the opening beach scene-not sure an 18 year old needs to see all those graphic visuals.

I don't know if this happens everywhere but here in Texas athletes take a baseline MRI in high school just in case they do suspect a concussion down the road-my daughter even had one for soccer. I think eventually they will use soft padding on the outsides of helmets for football players.

@drgnslayr
Did he/they survive Normandy? Can you share more about them?

Many thanks-can't wait to see it- but it will have to wait until tomorrow.

Agreed. We owe people who serve so much. I have a little to add- civil war, WWII, and Korean War but I am a lot more interested in other military stories. When we had the military channel and history channel they were my favorites.

Holy cow- have grandads medals from WWII and some info on his service-sounds like there is some major stories here.

If you can fool all the KU football fans all of the time, wouldn't Memorial Stadium always be full?

No malice.

Nuleaf- you brought back one of my favorite memories.
Country club week and the Wheel. Not that your September song isn't a great one-it just precedes my college days,

I remember "See you in September" playing on the jukebox (the Frankie Valli & the four seasons version) like it was yesterday-heck I just listened to it on you tube.

A nice poem/tribute to Robin Williams • Aug 20, 2014 02:20 PM

Someone sent me a link to Robin performing on Johnny Carson's second to last broadcast. That tells me Johnny held Robin's special talent in very high regard.

Yes, I think we missed a great opportunity with Louisville. And I feel for the athletes at WVU that have to trek so far west to compete half the time.

KU's Sophomore Point Guards • Aug 19, 2014 12:23 AM

Thanks for your time as a Jayhawk and good luck in the future Andrew..

'Aladdin' Genie Voice Actor Performs Tribute to Robin Williams

The WrapAug 17, 2014 IB Jason Hughes
Voice talent Jim Meskimen was touched by the loss of Robin Williams in a unique and personal way. Since 2008, he has been the voice of Disney’s Genie character from Aladdin, having voiced him in a series of Disney video games. Williams, of course, famously brought the Genie to life in the original Disney classic.

The character is one of Williams’s signature performances, leading Meskimen to wonder if he should continue voicing the character now that the actor who originated him has died.
“I decided to write this poem, to work it out for myself, and to answer the question,” he said.

In Memory Of Robin Williams" by Jim Meskimen

They didn’t burn all the pianos
When Fredrick Chopin died

Didn’t outlaw oil paints
when Picasso took his final ride

No one put a stop to baseball
When Mickey Mantle’s time was up

Or banned all Russian novels
When Tolstoy went belly up

On Shakespeare’s death, nobody said
“Now hath arrived the day —
From this point hence let none dare
Put forth pen to write a play!”

We celebrate what’s left
By the departed, it’s our choice
Yet it does seem sacriligeous
To do Robin Williams’ voice

A voice that was designed to soothe,
Soft, deep tones that resonate
And cascade gently outward
From behind a smiling face

A voice that could accelerate
To catch up with the mind
Like shifting into overdrive
To not get left behind

A voice that could change character
Like seconds on a clock
Or hijack nationalities
For a spin around the block

Shift age, shift viewpoint, shift I.Q.,
Whatever’s not nailed down
Destroy, rebuild, destroy again,
A formidable clown

We’ll hear this voice in future times
In reruns on TV,
It will occupy the world wide web
Live on, digitally

We’ll hear its echoes come
From other mouths and other lips
In tributes and homages, and,
Like psychedelic trips

We’ll think the owner’s back again
With his familiar sound
But they’ll all be imitations —
Just an audible rebound

New jokes aren’t in the pipeline now,
Not that the well went dry —
But the jester who possessed this voice
Just chose to say goodbye

With the wealth of joy he left us
We should probably rejoice
But it’s hard to grasp we lost the guy
Who used to have this voice.

@newleaf
Enjoy the game. They are certainly doing things right in Manhattan thanks to Snyder. And the town is growing as a result. My wife grew up there and went to KSU. We visit every year. We drove through this summer and saw a lot of new hotels that have been built recently -I imagine to handle the home game weekends. With so much success in football I would guess attendance for non revenue sports on other weekends has grown as well. I don't like KSU but I can't say it outloud in my house. Even so I have to respect what they've done.

Good for them thanks to the genius Snyder. What a strory and a class act. I am jealous we haven't kept up.

And what a shame on us.

I've posted before we played a couple of bowl games in the70's when I was at KU with a few making the NFL every year.. Not bad, but nothing like Mangino-he did great things for us and we yanked him like Texas Tech yanking Leach. They are suffering too, thanks to the wussification of America. I'd like to bill these parents who destroyed two programs overnight.

We (KU) better get back to .500 ball and regular bowl game showings NOW.

What's YOUR Excitement Level? • Aug 15, 2014 06:31 PM

Global,
Just checked the website and yes, what a treasure. I have strong memories of his work hanging on the walls in Allen Fieldhouse during my days at KU. I attended a KU Relays reunion a couple of years ago as saw more of his work at that time-I didn't know about his work outside of KU Sports so thanks much.
