Which Jayhawk Will Improve the Least? • Apr 21, 2015 07:13 PM

@JayHawkFanToo
Yeah the medical advances are amazing-my father was part bionic by the time he passed.

One thing that will probably slow BG's recovery is that joint is weight bearing.

I have two bad knees and a hip that's worse. I keep putting the repairs/replacements off.

Which Jayhawk Will Improve the Least? • Apr 21, 2015 06:40 PM

@wissoxfan83
safe bet.

I hope Selden IS the most improved next year.

Not that it means anything.... • Apr 21, 2015 02:18 PM

@dylans
Taco Juan's was a favorite late night stop back in the day.

Brandon Ingram Decision • Apr 20, 2015 11:54 PM

@wissoxfan83
I am 90 % sure about the no call. He was under the backboard a LONG time. After the collision and He was shooting a lay-up. In my mind nobody shot a free throw after they carried him off.

Brandon Ingram Decision • Apr 20, 2015 08:05 PM

@wissoxfan83
I was at Reunion arena-they took out Marshall on a lay-up-RUINED his knee...NO CALL.

@BeddieKU23
I will say San Diego in late December is a nice warm place to visit during the cold Kansas winter. As a student at KU I loved any chance to visit somewhere warm in the winter months. And I would expect there.will be a trip to the beach to wade in the Pacific Ocean. I doubt most on the team have seen it before.

Scott Pollard assistant coach? • Apr 18, 2015 01:38 AM

So- we have our next big man coach-a KU guy-love it.

@RockChalkinTexas
Thank you!

@jaybate-1.0
Priceless.

More Marsha. • Apr 17, 2015 02:40 AM

@KUSTEVE
I hope for their sake over time these players remember the championship more than the KU game-I mean-one March game vs most of a special season??? All the post game hugging & smiles???

More Marsha. • Apr 17, 2015 02:36 AM

@KUSTEVE
No kidding-I posted at length on another post when you celebrate beating another team .MORE that your championships it is just sad.

I thank The Lord I was never in that position. It was NEVER in our conversations in high school and college.

I agree-a Texas A&M grad showed me this years ago when I needed a smile. It is good medicine,

I sure hope you get more heavy stuff west of Austin for the the Colorado and Lake Austin flood plain. It looks like the heavy stuff went East of Austin AGAIN today.

SOON TO BE PUBLISHED FAKE BASKETBALL BOOKS • Apr 16, 2015 11:00 PM

I don't agree with it, but it sure understand it. If I had my thinking cap on at the time I would have posted it on you tube and sent a copy to ESPN.
Something like "if your going to call one cheap shot , call them both.

SOON TO BE PUBLISHED FAKE BASKETBALL BOOKS • Apr 16, 2015 10:56 PM

@drgnslayr
It was against Michigan early in the game. I was there in Dallas and the crowd had zero explanation what had happened. I made a mental note-when I get home check the DVR for anything happening before and there it was. A minute before, Mitch set a high pick near the free throw line. Just as the Michigan guard EJ was defending got to the pick he shoved EJ hard-right into Mitch. His head snapped back in whiplash-the result of a choreographed stunt. EJ tried to get back and got caught.

SOON TO BE PUBLISHED FAKE BASKETBALL BOOKS • Apr 16, 2015 10:30 PM

LOL

I would add a knockoff booklet for JR High bBall kids. How to grab, hold, and pull jerseys when the ref can't see

Special one page flyer to slow soccer defenders to teach pulling jerseys and arms when burned by a fast break forward-again while their body blocks the refs view-it makes me think they teach refs that players on breakaways will always trip and fall down by themselves and the defender never did anything. (Something very easy to see from the angle on the sidelines.)

And if I may -I'd like to admit something about your signature line.

When I ran the Sales & Marketing department I ALWAYS told my crew, This is me, this is who we are, what you see is what you get. Always pass on bad news (like missed delivery forecast as soon as you know so folks can plan around it.) Don't guess, say "I don't know." And never over promise.

As for the competitors- keep them guessing. I can remember a couple of fibs - like when ask about our annual sales figures when we were privately held.

@nuleafjhawk
Now that's an encouraging thought. (I am trying to quote Gandolf-not sure I got it right though.)

@JayHawkFanToo
Well it's where you finish that matters. Sounds like ya'll did good.

I hope I can say the same in 5 to 10 years-so far so good.

@nuleafjhawk
You are probably right. Perhaps we were a bunch of young Jayhawks going Mach 5 with hair on on fire who somehow survived it all.

@JayHawkFanToo
I guess I sailed under a lucky star. Mine certainly aren't perfect, but they are responsible, respectful, and have managed to keep their noses clean.

I would venture our players want to do the right things and pretty much do just that. But sometimes a teen just makes a bad decision-because something sounds fun. When I think back to the stupid things I did in my 20's I am surprised I'm still walking around.

KU pride • Apr 16, 2015 04:33 AM

Let me give you a well thought out response in the next day or two.

In short I was a guy who told my wife I would would not push my kids early. What I should have done was develop them early and step back and let them choose their way.

KU pride • Apr 16, 2015 03:49 AM

In my limited experience in NCAA bBall NOTHING compares to AFH.

That said March madness can be cool if you live 800 miles from AFH, and games in Texas in Houston aren't hard to get to from Houston except Texas Tech.

My avatar is my father with my children in Alaska. A special trip just after my 50th birthday-I was almost born there before statehood. He served there. In the Korean War.

My grandfather and father were leaders in scouting (Soutmaster or (asst.) and my cousin and I became Eagle Scouts. As you know, that requires a MAJOR commitment. To this day I believe that and Athletic accomplishments paved the way to great opportunities all through my career. As for athletics the good lord put my directly in the path of HOF coaches in High School. Talk about being born under a lucky star.

You,would surprised how affordable the first or second weekend can be if the location isn't close to KC.

I got tickets to DUke vs KU in 2003 at the pond (Anahiem, CA) ;

KU vs Richmond vs KU @ San Antonio with the twins befor the VCU game, and Michigan vs KU in that Memphis like meltdown in Dallas all for $100 each. SometiMes I bought early- sometimes I waited them out to bail.

My best win was front row tickets to KU vs Richmond at San Antonio for $94 each. Luckily I didn't drive back to SA for the VCU game and insisted to my father and friends not to buy tickets to the final 4 game or airfare to Houston until AFTER THE VCU game.

@jaybate-1.0
I may have posted this before-but John Wayne movies were important to me in my youth and still are as a parent.

My father was a single child who had an abusive step father-he didn't share this with me until I was out of college. Dad was a self made man-as many of that generation were.

I had three sisters and I was a little wimp. He did a number of things to bring me along including Saturday night movies. After mom and the girls would go to bed on Saturday night dad would let me stay up late to see a movie with him. Most were westerns or war movies and of course John Wayne was in many of them. As you say these movies are America. It gave me a clue to perseverance & hard work, sacrifice, morals, ethics, and not abusing power or taking advantage of the weak.
Then he got me into playing football and Boy Scouts. In the 60's and 70's that was a great place to be.

KU pride • Apr 15, 2015 09:50 PM

Okay, when I went to the 2008 final four my dad and I bought matching shirts with KU on them. We he got home he sent me a championship shirt, but it course it doesn't mention another team or the score.

KU pride • Apr 15, 2015 09:31 PM

@dylans
I do value final fours, A LOT. But I've only been to three-and one of them is a bad memory-1986. I don't have anything from that year.

KU pride • Apr 15, 2015 09:27 PM

@dylans
Actually I just went back and saw what I posted about my den. One sentence says, "Just 1988 and 2008 basketball" so my bad. I added "posters framed from sports illustrated"

KU pride • Apr 15, 2015 09:20 PM

@dylans
If I posted that somewhere it must of been when I was drinking. I don't have a signed ball.
I do have the Sports Illustrated Magazine "Oh Danny Boy" and a framed cover of the same.
I also have a wallet sized 1987-88 schedule with a picture of the team on the front.

Speaking of Howard Hawks and John Wayne-as it happens I watched Red River last night. Wanted to have the kids watch it but it was a school night.

Paying For Shaka Now • Apr 15, 2015 01:57 PM

@RockChalkinTexas
I went to the two past games ku played at Austin. In 2013 the place seemed full but not this year as you would know. I guess the deal in Austin is to be fashionably late because people were walking the their seats nearly the whole first half.

As for the new venue, can't believe the haven't got the land yet. My UT buddy tells me it is typical Texas fundraising tactics. How do taxes play a role? Because the venue hosts concerts etc. to the general public?

There are run down neighborhoods surrounding the campus. They should have bought the land decades ago with the multi-billion dollar endowment UT has. The campus was pretty in the 70's. Now most the trees and grass are gone-they overbuilt on a footprint instead of expanding the campus grounds.

Everyone's Super Bowl! • Apr 15, 2015 01:44 AM

I just looked it up. They were regular season and tourney champs in 2010. To me that is great performance. So later on they beat KU only to lose the next game. I get it they were thrilled to be in the spotlight and get an upset-icing on the cake so to speak. I will bet the players have a ring for the conference, maybe even a combo ring that says tourney too? if they gave them a sweet sixteen ring I think that's a joke too. I was on three hall of fame track teams as in top ten finish in the NCAA championships. Never a ring or plaque for that-not even a T-shirt.
We were second to UTEP one year. Nothing, nada, zip.

My mentality goes back to my high school and college days. Case in point I haven't thought about this for a long time but I had something nearly identical happen in a head to head jump competitions. I can elaborate in chat if you are curious but the thing is, " the time I beat so and so" never had place in my conversations, but winning championships did, and that is everything to me. And that is all I have in my den, Our Big 8 championships for track.. just 1988 and 2008 basketball framed pics from Sports Illustrated.. No final four stuff at all, but I am very cool with them in the Allen Fieldhouse rafters. We all know there isn't one banner in AFH that mentions another school.
As for the high school championships those patches are in a box with my high school letter.

Come to think of it I need to honor the girls NCAA champs from a few years back.

Everyone's Super Bowl! • Apr 14, 2015 09:28 PM

I will say what I've said before. Championships are very special and worthy of rings, trophy's, posters, shirts and hats. I was lucky enough to be part of that back in the day.

Celebrating one game? If that's what mattered to me I'd be sad to think there wasn't anything better.

I'm hearing Diallo to Kansas... • Apr 11, 2015 03:27 AM

When I was in high school/ college a few friends had cabins/boats in the Ozarks and that included a cabin that was a much larger nicer "cabin" than the house we lived in. At that point my goal was to have a vacation home in the Ozarks or the Colorado mountains if not both.
At that time I envisioned working and living in KC the rest of my life.

I remember a girlfriend called me a fool for wanting that. Boom-last date.

After living in SoCal and Texas for 25 years, no idea WHAT will follow with my kids just about to finish high school.

But a place at the lake sounds as peaceful as it ever did.

@drgnslayr
I am going back to what I've posted before. My daughter plays club ball AAU tourneys and even at BIG tourneys in middle school she had to watch a NCAA rules video. Now there is no real WNBA money or shoe money here for women but the rules are the same for men . Now we go to high school tourneys and these videos are required at most every tourney, including parents signing documents they know the rules.

So as Bill Self states it is not against the rules to talk to an agent. But extra benefits ARE illegal and what ever scumbag got involved with Cliff/or his family deserves to have a court order stating he can NEVER have contact with an amateur athlete again.

I'm hearing Diallo to Kansas... • Apr 11, 2015 02:08 AM

Sorry folks, my mind wanders enough as it is. After this dance--- burgers and skiing are a sweat diversion for this old fart.

I'm hearing Diallo to Kansas... • Apr 11, 2015 01:58 AM

I think I only skied behind a correct craft once-and that was back when I was a novice skier. My friends parents had V-hulls and when I got better I enjoyed jumping wakes-usually 9" to say 16" at about 30 mph depending on how many folks were in the boat.
In my 30's I bought. 20 ft Bayliner I/O with a 5 liter engine. Not near as good as a ski antique out of the hole but adequate for my big a$$. It did about 52 mph in smooth water when it plained out. I enjoyed jumping the wake and when I made a hard turn I could yank that sucker back and forth- something I also enjoyed at 200 pounds. And at 30 mph you could go into a real hard turn and pull some serous G's-something I really enjoyed surprising my crew with. I m sure it wasn't your bat turn but still fun. Plus it was very comfortable for 8 people. One of the best investments I ever made. I let it go when the kids were born. We were more interested in playing in the Pacific Surf. I taught the kids to snow and water ski but they are beach kids when it comes to the water.
Me-my favorite post colleges memories are wine, women, and song with a very heavy dose of water skiing. (Wine=beer back then).

The Need For Intelligent Recruiting • Apr 10, 2015 07:05 PM

@Wigs2
Back in the day there were freshmen teams for basketball and football.
These were also the only two revenue sports year in year out.
Title nine made the schools split the funds in half and give half to the women.
I believe that is when freshmen teams were eliminated.
