I wish I could get a money line on the UK game tonight. I'd put $100 on it.
@justanotherfan UK is losing tonight
I've been waiting for the day that Bill Self left for an NBA job. But after he turned down the Cavs job a couple of seasons ago, I am pretty sure that he ends his career at KU. The worst of it is basically over as far as the FBI thing goes. I bet Bill Self is in Lawrence, KS next season.

Last night was Duke's A game and it was spectacular to watch. Their A game is the best A game in the country.
They also won't do that every night. I believe it was Bill Self that said most teams play their A game 4-5 times a season, D-F game 4-5 times a year, and the rest of the season is their B-C game.
For the most part, the Silvio situation won't impact KU on the court. The one team that not having Silvio is really going to hurt Kansas is if they play Duke in the NCAA tournament. Silvio would've allowed Self to play a line up of Doke, Silvio, and Dedric against Duke's front line.
That's almost exactly what Cal tried last night at one point in the game and it got eaten alive.
I think you probably just have to deny Zion the ball with someone like Garrett. He destroyed Kentucky's bigs off the dribble, so either you guard him with a big and sag WAY off him or you put a guard on him.
I'm far more concerned with giving up 87 than how we can improve upon scoring 92 against an Izzo coached MSU team... We will score and won't have much trouble doing it.
Not being able to defend the 3 (especially from the bigs) was what let us down last season. So far, game 1, 5 threes given up to a post player. We have to get better at this. I was also concerned with how well MSU was able to run in transition on us. If you can force a couple more misses from 3 and not allow layups in transition, we probably win this game by 15. I expect a lot more out of this defense than what was shown last night.

This would be a better game if played in a few months between UK and Dook. As some have mentioned UK had 15 TOs to Dooks 4, Dook probably isn’t going to shoot the ball as well as they did from ether the floor or 3 point land every game and UK probably won’t shoot it that bad often ether. UK has very little size compared to most years, Travis was on Zion a fair amount last night and tho he is listed at 6’8, Zion at 6’7 he looked shorter Zion. Zion still has plenty to improve on, I think all but 5 of his points came from a Dunk/lay up or Fts. It will be interesting to see him battle some guys that are bigger than him inside.
Duke beats that UK team by double digits 9 out of 10 times. And probably wins 99 out of 100. Which definitely lends itself to how good I think Duke is. But it also speaks to how bad UK is.
UK can't play D and Cal is one of the worst offensive coaches in D1 Basketball. And I don't think they have the talent to overcome his piss poor in game coaching ability like they normally do.
They play a decent Southern Illinois team on Friday and I'm already telling you to put them on upset alert.
Doke set the tone for the entire game in the first 5 minutes when he swatted Ward twice.
uk sucks

Lol UK is seriously bad. Like will be fighting for the NCAA tournament bad, imo.
Calm down.
Could you imagine though? Wow.
I'M SERIOUS
UK doesn't pass well and they don't shoot well.

Just curious why this thread was started when there was already one started with the same topic before it? Less seems better to me. BTW, Ethan Happ with a triple double tonight.
Was there a thread for other games tonight? I just didn't want to add unnecessary posts to the Classic thread.

@Kcmatt7 Ya you were right. I think it may be more that Duke is really good though.
In games like this, depth is overrated. UK is less talented 1-6. Thats what matters.
But also, PJ sucks, NR sucks, and Green sucks. That's why they are all sophomores at UK. Add in that Quickley sucks and Hagans sucks and you have a double digit loss team. Reid is their best player and he played on a bad team last season. UK can either suck at D or they can suck at O depending on the lineup. But they don't have a group of 5 that can play on both ends.
Sucks by UK standards. I'd bet PJ and Nick would develop well at KU. PJ is decent, but he's a 6'7'' center, so that will hurt you in some games for sure.
I'm not big on Green or Quickley, but I thought Hagans might be a dude. Herro is um...he is completely outmatched in this game. Barrett sees a target cursor on Herro every time he has the ball. Herro won't be overmatched like this every game I don't think anyway. He's not great overall though.
Herro will stuggle unless he can beat guys off of the dribble. The only guy who can shoot on their team. They won't let him shoot. PJ is a 6'7 C. You're right. He can't block a shot. Neither can Reid. Montgomery is overmatched now that guys are his size. Only positive is KJ. And he doesn't score well enough.
I would bet that the analysts switch their UK NC opinion to Duke starting tomorrow. Only took an hour lol

I'll go out on a limb and say Dotson finishes 2nd in points and is the difference in the game.

UCLA also lost Tyger Campbell, expected point guard contributer, Shareef O'Neil a top 50 recruit and Cody Riley is out a while with a jaw issue. So that's 3 guys that would play who are not suiting up for them tonight. I agree that they probably just win on athletic ability but man that line looks tempting
I still think they should overwhelm
However, I don't suggest that Garrett do much guarding of Ward. I think Doke and Dedric can handle him.
I think Garrett could successfully guard Ward for a period of time. Not the entire game. But he could definitely disrupt him for awhile. Part of it would simply be that MG would have the quickness to not let Ward be able to lean on him and still successfully get around him to defend entry passes.
I think it might also force Ward into making skilled moves instead of just powering through a smaller guy. Part of the reason guys like Doke and Ward score as well as they do is that whoever is defending them is still a large man and so flops don't look as convincing. Garrett could take a shoulder and fall to the ground and would be much more likely to receive a charging call.

UNC vs Wofford - UNC only an 11 point favorite. Wofford pulled off the upset last season. I think UNC comes out looking for revenge. I'm interested to see what Nas Little looks like in big time CBB. He looked like the best player at the McD AA game.
-
IPFW vs UCLA - UCLA opened as 11 point favorites but it was pushed to 13. Criminal line for a UCLA team that I expect to just out athlete their opponents. They added a lot of talent and brought back a lot of talent.
-
Florida vs Florida State - FSU favored by 4 points. Both teams are good. Both teams have some returning studs. Should be the 3rd best game on tonight.
-
Louisiana Tech vs Wichita State - Upset alert. WSU only favored by 9. WSU seems like they might kind of suck.
-
BYU vs Nevada - Nevada favored by 12. Really like BYU to cover the spread here. They were a young team last year and should surprise some folks this season. Tight game.
UK board seems to think that their only advantage is depth tonight. They think they might have to go Zone and play big to compete. Not a good sign for them imo.
MSU at +5 is a good bet. 2-0 against KU in this tournament. They just held their exhibition opponent to 47. Even if KU wins, 5 points is a pretty big spread to cover in a game where the winner is probably whoever gets to 70 points first.
@JayHawkFanToo I skimmed through the contract and that's how I read it at least. It was a "Termination Clause" and they could terminate the contract without cause for a $3M buyout paid quarterly over the next few years.
If that I am interpreting it correctly, I think the writing is on the walls.
@JayHawkFanToo I think it may just be $3M to buy him out. At least from what I'm reading.
As is pretty usual, KU has a chance at a great travel schedule providing they take care of business. Des Moines or Tulsa to start. Then Kansas City. Finish an easy drive up I-35 to Minneapolis.
@kjayhawks Elite 8 is in KC this year I believe...
I'm a little disappointed I'm home right now. Last two season's I was fortunate enough to go to these games. I highly suggest going to one if you can swing it at some point. They have Alumni events that weekend. Usually KU plays the Friday before this (or has) and there is a giant watch party. Then there is typically a complimentary pregame with tons of food and drinks all comped by the School of Business and Engineering.
They also split up the stadium into 4 quadrants. Of course, 3 or the 4 are blue, but it's fun to sit next to KU fans so its a big party in your section. And it's not an "NCAA" event so they can serve beer during the game.
It really is a great event.
@KUSTEVE Its about the only thing that makes me wish KU played tomorrow instead of today. Usually Kansas is wrapped up and you don't see too many ads from that side of the border. This year, not the case.
@JayHawkFanToo Oh I think there is definitely something to picking the right guys. Weis was never the disciplinarian to be able to successfully keep guys with "issues" in line though.
I just think it is about the only competitive advantage KU holds as far as recruiting goes, so it's stupid not to utilize it. There is absolutely no reason we shouldn't be getting two or three starter level players coming here out of the 8 CCs in the state.
I don't know that Littrell would risk waiting that long to get paid. If Riley doesn't make the jump after this season, it would be dumb. Someone is going to offer Littrell stupid money this offseason.
Fantastic news.
I wonder how long until it's announced... If it's Miles, the deal is done. They just have to interview a handful of candidates so that there isn't a lawsuit.
@BShark I wouldn't be mad about that. He did have great rushing numbers. Either way, I'm glad to see that Hull is still authorized to still be offering scholarships. Definitely a good sign...
Fan interest would be there if there was something interesting to be watched.
Recruiting pipeline is here. The JUCO pipeline. It has been cut off from KU ever since Mangino though. Apparently, he burnt some bridges and nobody has been able to rebuild them yet. And I'm not talking about desperation JUCO takes. I'm talking about the Zach Mettenbergers. The Alvin Kamara's. We need a coach who is going to nab the talent that is right in our backyards. Not even heavy JUCO classes. But classes with 4 or 5 JUCO guys that are legit players. In 2017 alone there were 3 Hutch players and a Butler player who got drafted. If you REALLY focused on landing top JUCO talents I think we would see some top tier talent infusion.
The players are in new dorms. There is going to be a new practice facility, an updated stadium, we have a top tier weight room, and then we have a new lockerroom.
It's not a bad job for the right person.

It's not necessarily just about Ward getting into foul trouble. I want Ward to have to work at both ends of the floor, so I want Doke to go at him. I don't want to force anything, but I do think KU should make an effort to go inside a lot. Agree with Dedric on Ward at times if Dedric is not in foul trouble.
I don't think we will have to worry about Doke leaning on him. We'll make him work.
If we really wanted to make him work we'd pull Doke out early and let Lawson play the 5 and make him defend all the way out to the 3 point line.
Definitely more and more smoke. Looking at his CC stats, I am disappointed though. He is either a project or a guy you move to a new position.
@KirkIsMyHinrich That's why I said the 2nd half. I don't want Lawson in foul trouble either. But if Ward is killing us and Dedric goes into the half with 0 or 1 fouls, it would probably be worth the risk. He isn't a foul prone player.
I do want to stay away from trying to force it in to Doke just so we can try to get Ward in foul trouble. If it happens organically, fantastic. Otherwise I say just play good offense. Ward is pretty good about staying out of foul trouble and so trying to force that could definitely backfire.

Talking to MSU fans, they seem to have absolutely no confidence in their backcourt outside of Cassius Winston. They think their advantage will be in the frontcourt.
Nick Ward vs Doke honestly feels like a wash to me. Their stat-lines from last season are pretty much identical and Doke is 2 or 3 inches taller and 30-40 pounds larger. Nick Ward doesn't shoot 3's. Neither does Xavier Tillman, who is 6'8, 245.
Dedric is going to have a huge matchup advantage over Goins or Tillman (whichever one starts).
The matchup that scares me the most is Winston vs whoever KU throws at him. I feel like it would be worth starting Marcus Garrett at the point in this game just to put some size and experience on Winston.
Ward is skilled around the basket though and knows how to use his huge body for positioning etc. Expect Doke in foul trouble, its what he does. This is a matchup we'd kill to have De Sousa eligible. Oh well.
I think you let Doke go at him for as long as he can stay in the game. If he struggles, let Lawson start guarding him in the 2nd half. Try to bother him with those long arms.
Jordan Hamilton, Avery Bradley, Corey Joseph, Tristian Thompson, LaMarcus Aldridge, Damion James, DJ Augustine, etc.
Nike tried to gift the man a NC.
At least a dozen Top 50 recruits sent his way between 2006-2010. Add in a few guys ranked right at 100 who panned out, and Rick Barnes still didn't get a single of those absolutely stacked teams to a FF. TJ Ford carried him to his one and only. No wonder Nike soured on him and cut him off in 2013. Ten solid years of players gift wrapped and nothing to show for it.
Defend the 3 point line well and KU wins running away. Let Winston, Langford or McQuaid get hot though, and one of them might be able to carry MSU's offense well enough to keep them in the game.
I went 8/10 yesterday, all but hitting a 10 game parlay and still taking home $53 after it was all said and done. The lines were ridiculous lol. CFB was awful this weekend though. A lot of games hitting right at the line.
Regardless of the measurements chosen, I'm just happy to see what appears to be additional transparency.
I think most of us are realists. But, 6-39 isn't going to cut it. I'd gladly take a guy with a .450ish winning percentage and puts out a product that sees a bowl game every 2-3 seasons and just generally puts out a football team that at least has a chance to win most weekends. Make the KSU rivalry fun. Pull off an upset every so often.
Just don't be a laughing stock at this point.
@Wigs2 at this point, he’s a problem. Look at how unorganized this team is. We run a trick plays almost every game but can barely execute a normal play. Our o-line play is a joke. Small schools are able to put together a line capable of not letting their QB get killed. Our playcalling gets stale as games go on. There is nothing even close to special about our offense. We are an “air raid” offense that can’t score 20 points.
Maybe someone else can’t fix it either, but Beaty has shown that he definitely can’t.
Presser for firing or is a hiring happening today? Not a lot of options if we are hiring someone. Miles, Beilma, Mora, Jones are about the only guys I can think of if we hired someone right now
@kjayhawks Well not making a bowl game in 10 years excuses a lack of fan support imo. It isn't even a competitive product on the field. And hasn't been since 09.
I realize the players are working hard. But showing financial support also empowers the University to not make necessary changes. The only way you can show how you feel to the KU athletics department is with your wallet.

Someone posted about it on the KUSports site one day and that's how I ended up finding it.

He just looks so awkward out there. He has what I'll refer to as "Carlton Bragg syndrome." Those legs just don't move fast enough to be able to guard anyone. He plays too vertical, and my assumption is just that he doesn't have the leg strength to be able to bend at the knees and shuffle.
Unless he drastically improves by Tuesday, I hope he doesn't see the floor.
