@BShark Meh, fine with that. That article made it sound like he was a Spring commit and will be waiting out everyone and seeing where he can go to start immediately. Not sure that opportunity would exist here for him.
@HighEliteMajor How is the rule working fine?
Because 99% of the athletes follow a rule that wouldn't effect them whether or not it even existed?
How about you look at the percentages of those following the rules inside just the P5 conferences in football and basketball. You know, the two sports that make all of the money.
Do you still think the rules are working for them? What percentage of players do you think are following the rules in those conferences?
Let's discuss how you see the rule as working fine? Because I sure don't see it working.
@HighEliteMajor Where are these businesses? Well, one looks like an X, the other similar to a check mark, and the other has three stripes. Maybe you haven't read the news.
These players take the money from the shoe companies, and STILL play NCAA Basketball. What does that tell you? The rule isn't working. It tells you that the value of these kids is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The market says the value is there. This is inescapable.
@Bwag I'm not talking about the NBA...
@HighEliteMajor Entry-Level people don't have another business willing to pay them hundreds of thousands of dollars to stay and work at their current business, costing that business they currently work for, nothing. It might even cause their very good employees to stay a little bit longer and increase the value of their business and the product/service they offer.
We will see. Watching him destroy Big Dave for an entire game really opened my eyes. None of those guys ever did that to another McDs AA the way Carey just absolutely punked Dave.
Don't even get me started.
The way I see it, the Royals should have between $46.5M and $65.5M spent in better places if not for the WS push. And they should be contenders again this season and for another 4 or 5 years at least. The only trade I would consider a "win" under GMDM would be the Zach Greinke trade. I could be persuaded the Shields and Davis trade was a draw. Other than that, you are feeling the after effects of GMDM trades this season. He sold the future for immediate short-term results and then inflated the payroll long-term at the same time. That caused us to be unable to bring back our best players. Now we have a great shot at losing 100 games for the next 4 seasons.
You got me started...
I do like that Sam blasted the NCAA's rules and focused his column on the irony of KU being a "victim" despite the Adidas contract negotiations.
Compared to Forde's article, that sure felt like a Bill Self slam piece.
@BShark I do think Carey will take a team to a FF much like Okafor did. Just not a lot of guys who will be able to stop him at the college level.
Not mad. Glad we got cut now instead of chasing a unicorn.
@drgnslayr because he fills all of his scholarships with high upside players and coaches them up. He creates competition some of the top guys are scared of. Jmo
@Woodrow lol even he is now tired of the culture he himself created at UK.
@Woodrow ok so agree to disagree, that’s fine.
But what if we don’t look competitive at all this season? What if it’s a repeat of last year?
@Woodrow well Beaty wasn’t worth that price. And the only reason he was hired was because we were still paying Fat Charlie and couldn’t afford anyone else or attract any talent.
4 years ago, I would have agreed that this job was poopoo. It was an impossible position to be successful in. We wouldn’t pay a coach much money, we had no talent at all, and our AD had no intentions of investing money into our teams outdated facilities.
All of that has changed. And while the job may not be attractive to top assistants, it still would be for younger up and coming head coaches. There are several coaches in the MAC right now that I would be interested in. And I think they would take the job now, knowing they would be given 5 years to get the thing rolling.
HE GONE
@Woodrow $3M isn’t as much as you are thinking it is imo. Not anymore. That is the price for getting a guy to make the jump now. It isn’t like we are trying to make someone the highest paid coach in football. But cheating out on your coach just isn’t the place to skimp.
@Woodrow I would want us to hire someone like Jeff Brohm when he was at Western Kentucky. A guy with Head Coach experience and program development. Someone with a history of success. Brohm cost $3M. That is where my bar is at and where I am getting my salary figure. Paying anyone less means we are just taking another throw at the dart board and hoping we hit a bullseye.
Once Beaty went the JUCO route with this class, he put all his chips in the middle. It is time to put up or shut up.
@Woodrow Yes they can and yes they can.
That is probably the average salary for a P5 Head Football Coach.
And you can fire them when the scholarship count is low if it isn't getting any better anymore. Beaty can't keep kids on the team or sign enough HS kids so scholarship numbers aren't actually getting better anymore.
I am totally ok giving the next Head Coach a guaranteed 5 years. But I want a guy committed to recruiting at the HS level,a proven player developer and I want his contract to basically say he would have to commit a federal crime to be fired before that.
Like I said, if Beaty doesn't win 4 games this year, he needs to go. This is his 4th year and there needs to be tangible proof of improvement.
How much longer do you want to keep Beaty if he keeps posting 1 win seasons?
@BigBad And switch on pick and rolls.
Patty Pat Pat. You sad sack of Mizzou trash. You couldn't help yourself. You have been awaiting this moment. Kansas was finally named in the FBI probe, officially. A glorious moment for the little brother to the East. We know that, on a forum, we would be giving the same crap to anyone else. But, when a "journalist" from your rival clearly writes an nationally published article in an attempt to defame a program, and then claims that work as good journalism, I have a problem.
Pat Forde doubled down on his takes on the Petro show a couple of days ago. I was disappointed with how the interview went, as Petro kept alluding to what he really wanted to say, but ended up not having the guts to actually put Forde on the spot. But I did take two things for Petro's show. The first, that Pat Forde has as much pull in the CBB world as anyone on this Board. When your named and unnamed source have to be the same person, and they are simply a TV personality that can't get a Head Coaching job, you have absolutely no clout in the business.
The Second, and most important one, is that either Bill Self is either a complete idiot, or he is clean and knows it.
In Pat's article, he rips us for Cliff, JJ, Billy and De Sousa. When he was on Petro, he challenged people to find "any inaccuracies in my story." Well, I will concede that he probably doesn't have any inaccuracies, but simply information withheld from the story to fit his narrative. Basically, today's bullshit that somehow passes for "journalism."
Instead of commending KU's compliance department for somehow unearthing the financial schemes, and holding out Billy and Cliff, he acts as if Bill Self knew and that the compliance department is protecting him. How Cliff could be held against Bill Self I have no idea. Bill Self didn't take out the loan for Cliff's mom. But somehow, that makes KU dirty. He uses the same information that, Yahoo themselves released, that had JJ's mom included, but failed to mention that several other CBB stars over the past two years were on that same list. Why? Because providing all of the information discredits what Pat wants you to believe. Pat Ford is on a mission to prove that Bill Self is basically the Don Corleone of CBB.
Of course, that theory only works if you think Bill Self is a complete F-ing idiot. How dumb would you have to be, to sit a player that you paid, only to bring in another kid that you paid AFTER the FBI probe was announced. You would have to be a complete moron. Only a complete f-ing idiot would be that dumb.
So, is Bill Self dumb, or is he clean? You can't have both Pat. Either Bill is so confident that him and his staff aren't involved in anything dirty that he doesn't care who he brings in, or he is a complete moron who has cheated his way to the top.
I find it hard to believe that anyone who has won 14 straight conference titles, been to 3 FFs and won a NC can be considered an idiot.
So, Pat, go f--k yourself.
Now that is what you say when you are coming back.
Go read Wenyen Gabriel's. That is what you say when you are gonzo.
@BeddieKU23 If he thought he was going to come here and start year 1, or even get a ton of PT, it might be best he goes somewhere else anyways.
If he thinks he can come in here and be an impact player for the last 3 of his 4 years, than I think KU is the place for him.
@Crimsonorblue22 If Bill really is clean, I don't think he cares what anyone is saying about him. Especially jealous little bitches.
@nuleafjhawk Well anything less than 4 wins or 3 wins and several almost wins should result in a firing. JMO
@jayballer73 Bill Self just isn't one to hang on to a scholarship. I would agree with you, but the reality is that Bill uses all 13 if he can.
K and Cal routinely hold on to scholarships so they don't have players blocking youngsters in the future. We choose to try and get experienced guys and develop them. It is all how you look at it.
@truehawk93 well, speculation is now that Dan dakich was the names and unnamed source lol.
Which makes the story even funnier lol
@nuleafjhawk meh we will win 1.
@jayballer73 I wouldn’t call a top 100 kid who will be here 4 years or possibly redshirting for a 5th year, settling.
And it’s the off-season and it’s slow right now so it’s fun to speculate. I would think it’s time to take a deep breath. At this point, taking a 13th player is a huge luxury so I don’t care if it is a guard or a post player.
We won’t know anything for sure until the 30th, so people are just killing some time. It’s a forum and none of us are journalists. I have no problem with anyone creating fun things to talk about.
Wouldn't work. Schools make too much money from their deals with shoe companies. NCAA would have to pay KU $192M over the next 12 years. And the NCAA refuses to pay anyone.
@jayballer73 Well it makes sense for two reasons. Neither of them positional, but they do make sense.
- Coach is gone
- Adidas kid going to an Adidas school
I don't think it would be a fall back for Romeo, but simply the use of the 13th scholarship.
I mean, there isn't another Romeo available. Nor is there really anyone available that I would think could be better than what we have on our roster right now at that position.
But I do hope that something crazy happens and we somehow either land Romeo or another top recruit.
@JayHawkFanToo I actually think that Silvio will end up becoming eligible. It may come with a suspension, but I think he will play. Of course providing the guardian and Silvio are proactive instead of playing the "wait and see what the FBI has on us" game.
@Woodrow You have to read between the lines a little, but there are basically no other Blue Bloods chasing him. He is living in Kentucky, but UK won't even sniff him. That is especially concerning, considering they were desperate for bigs, he could be a possible 18 reclass, and he is a top 5 talent.
Something just doesn't smell right.
@justanotherfan I feel good we can attract a better option than a WR Coach. Hell, our OC is more qualified to be a head coach than our head coach.
We might not be able to get the type of guys taking SEC jobs, but we should be able to get that next tier. You have to think that budget was a HUGE issue when hiring Beaty. We should be able to afford a $3M/yr guy again starting next season, and money talks.
@nuleafjhawk Are you saying we will win more or less? lol.
There are some leagues that limit American's only. Doke would be a big advantage in those leagues. Others are foreigners, period, and Doke would not qualify for that. However, if Doke can get citizenship in one of the countries, he could then fetch a big pay day.
I have no doubt Doke could make a good living playing ball in Europe.
One can only hope Zenger leaves with Beaty.
@BShark Lol I think it is actually going to be perfect timing. Beaty is going to put up another 1 win team, get the boot, and a new coach will be able to recruit with a fresh start and new facilities.
One thing not being considered, Doke might technically be worth more. I don't know if the rules limit Americans, or just foreign players. I think it is just American players. That would give Doke a lot more options and potentially drive his price up a bit, being as how he isn't technically an "American."
Good to see this finally get underway. Really think this was long overdue.
I know I did while I was writing it lol.
@JayHawkFanToo Oh you at least smirked reading it.
@BeddieKU23 Well I'm sure it makes for a really awkward situation when Greg is in the corner watching.
@KUSTEVE Gregg's wife probably gets handsy with them in the lockerroom.
@Crimsonorblue22 I don't know that it changes from 18 to 19 lol.
@Crimsonorblue22 There are kids younger than him playing pro ball in Europe.
I just hope Silvio and his Guardian are cooperative with the NCAA and get it sorted out now instead of dragging it out into the season. I honestly believe that if Silvio had no idea he shouldn't be penalized for his guardian.
If the FBI wanted to really make a difference, they would go after the parents.
I'd agree unless we basically audited the kid and his parents. If the staff does their due diligence, I am ok with it. I mean, hell, we are already in the deep end and we actually have the depth to absorb it if something really were to happen.
What if Bassey comes? Do they not change their rankins? lol
@FarmerJayhawk I'm not arguing that. I'm just saying he is going to have tempting offers come in and he is in a rough spot as far as decisions go.
I hope he stays. I really, really hope he stays. But I don't know what I would do in the same position as him.
@Woodrow I sure hope so.
