Probably Going to Move On From Zach Harvey • Apr 06, 2018 03:30 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Same difference. a 16 year old with a 15 year old isn't something abnormal. We aren't talking a 16 year old with an 8 year old.

This is defying common sense. 15 year olds have been taking pictures of themselves and giving them to 16 year olds since the invention of the camera.

@dylans I would bet that they don't get charged the full $500....

That tattoo thing was going on well before the stipend was introduced. Everyone knows someone. And It is just good advertising for a tattoo artist to have someone "famous" running around with their work showing.

@BigBad Pell Grants don't pay you six figures and they get the tattoos for free, guaranteed.

Probably Going to Move On From Zach Harvey • Apr 06, 2018 02:07 PM

I wouldn't move on from him. Seems like dumb kid things and that it could happen to any kid under 18 years old in today's world. I just don't understand the logic behind these cases. How is a 16 year old with another picture of a 16 year old a felony? Especially if the 16 year old girl sent the picture of her own free will.

If this same thing happened two years from now, not a crime.

Absolutely goes against all logic.

Looking at our roster, and projected future rosters, I think this is where Self goes on an unprecedented run of FFs and possibly NCs. We have a great combination of size, talent and depth. A great mix of 4 year guys and potential OADs. Mitch will go from our 2nd big to possibly our 6th depending on how everything shakes out still. At least the 4th. That is depth. We brought in a nice project in Ochai, we have a great project at PG coming next season in Jacobs, we have ins with what feels like 6 of the 2019 post players, local talent is emerging, potential for another generational type African Big in 2020, USA Basketball will make a nice impact, etc etc etc.

Things look good. I haven't been this optimistic about winning a NC in a good lone while.

Let the dumb begin! • Apr 05, 2018 08:40 PM

I am not so worried about the leadership next season, because I think this team is going to have an identity all together. It won't be "so and so's" team. This is going to be a gritty team that I think hangs it's hat on the defensive end. And that is why the leadership doesn't worry me as much. We should be the reboundingest, shot blockingest hard foulingest team in the country. We finally have the depth to just throw body after body after body at teams.

This may be a dumb question, but who was the unquestioned leader of the 2008 team? It felt like everyone, right? Sure they were experienced. But, ultimately, that team was just super unselfish. Everyone bought in, shared the ball, and punched every team they played in the mouth on the defensive end.

Who was the leader of the 2012 team? T-Rob, maybe? I never felt like that though. Again, I felt that team just took on an identity together. They played with a chip on their shoulder all year. They were thin, but they were tough. If you were on the court with that team, you were laying someone out or just making things happen. Sure we ran the offense through one or two guys, but I didn't think that made either of them the leaders. Everyone on that team just knew their roles.

I actually hate when team's take on the identity of one player. I think it forces players to defer to that one player instead of exploiting their own mismatch or using their own game to the best of their abilities.

No knocks on DG or Frank. It think they propped up a bunch of misfits these past two years. But next season I just want to see everyone carve out their own role, and then take pride in just doing their part. We don't need someone to be everything. We need everyone to just be something. Then, from there, it is Bill's job to put the puzzle together.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 05, 2018 05:04 PM

@BeddieKU23 Well I feel like we are about to start recruiting at a level we have never seen Bill recruit after the FBI probe. Clearly had players bought away from us these last few years. Add in USA basketball, and it is realistic to think the 2019 class will be an absolute monster one.

What a coup would it be to land JRE, Hurt and Carey?

Let the dumb begin! • Apr 05, 2018 04:56 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I think he finally is in a good spot where he could have 5 solid experienced starters, depending on Jones' recovery, and then good young talent to bring in off of the bench. I just don't think he has really had that quite yet.

I do not think Shaka is a great coach, but if we judged every coach the same way we have judged his first 3 years, there wouldn't hardly be any good coaches.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 05, 2018 04:28 PM

@BeddieKU23 Well I hope we are showing them film of Perry and how we used him on the perimeter and inside. Because Duke and Kentucky both have proof they will let their 4 man shoot it. Perry was the first 4 that Bill ever let take 3s.

If we do miss, at least we are in on a lot of bigs for 2019.

Let the dumb begin! • Apr 05, 2018 04:07 PM

@Barney I just have a feeling Konate is going to get good feedback and not come back. If I thought he'd be back, I might pick WVU.

Huggy always is a winner. And he might finish top 3. I just think UT SHOULD finish top 2. They have the talent and athleticism to do so at least.

The Basketball Tournament • Apr 05, 2018 04:04 PM

Pitt team looks good. Usually Syracuse puts together a very good team. Devendorf and CJ Fair usually play.

I would think you could put together a really good group from KU. Tyshawn, Releford, EJ, T-Rob, Xavier Henry, Little, Selby, Kevin Young and Jamari would all be eligible to play and as good or better than everyone else playing.

The Basketball Tournament • Apr 05, 2018 03:52 PM

With the amount of money on the line, I'm usually surprised how many games it looks like guys aren't even trying.

Let the dumb begin! • Apr 05, 2018 03:42 PM

I think Texas is probably the best bet two finish second next year, gun to my head.Of course that largely depends on Coleman's and Sim's development. I think they have the talent at this point. It really is if Shaka can actually coach them this year.

Gotlieb is usually a good segment on Petro's show, but he does show his OSU colors every once in a while.

Frank driving the ball A LOT • Apr 05, 2018 03:01 PM

I do not have much faith that DG will be able to carve out any sort of NBA career. I think he would be VERY successful in Europe, but he may very well end up wasting his best years in the U.S. chasing a dream.

I just don't think he can guard a soul. If I were him, and I got drafted in the 2nd round with no guaranteed contract, I would go play overseas. Of course his draft rights would be held by someone, but if he crushes it in Europe and proves he belongs in the league, he can parlay that into a guaranteed contract.

Modern Basketball vs Bill Self • Apr 05, 2018 02:55 PM

I would have to see a lot of advanced stats before I say we just completely abandon it. But overall, I agree that it shouldn't be a main strategy offensively. It should be what we do as our under 10 seconds on the shot clock offense instead of driving the ball into traffic or something like that.

What I want to see are lobs and more lobs to these guys, and our 2nd post player to be given the green light to shoot open 3s so the defense has to respect that and can't help on the lob.

We definitely need to spread the ball more. Just as a whole, i would like to see Bill go after some stretch 4 type of guys from here on out. He can go get his Blue Collar Center too, as long as he gets a modern big man who can shoot the 3 to compliment him.

Frank driving the ball A LOT • Apr 05, 2018 02:40 PM

Needs to add the floater to his game this offseason. And probably needs to work on changing his pace in the lane. He can blow by anyone, but doing it 1000 mph isn't going to result in good shooting at the rim at that level. He needs to blow past his defender, and then slow down right about the free throw line and read the defense from there. If the Big man comes over to help, easy oop. If he doesn't easy layup. If the defense does a full rotation, kick it out to a shooter.

He needs to let the scoring mentality go and watch about 1000 hours of Tony Parker and how he uses pace to get himself and others wide open looks.

Future NCAA Regional & Final 4 sites • Apr 04, 2018 10:25 PM

@BShark it makes sense if you saw how poorly KSU traveled to Atlanta... NCAA is all about filling seats and games close to Wichita and KC with KU in them means tickets sold.

Future NCAA Regional & Final 4 sites • Apr 04, 2018 08:54 PM

We basically always play in our own backyard up to the FF, which you would think would be a bigger advantage than it has been. Honestly, it is pathetic how poorly we play in non-con games at the Sprint Center. No real excuses to not make B2B FFs with the group we will have next season and playing less than 4 hours away both rounds.

Also, fwiw, I love Minneapolis. Great city with great people. I would love to go to that FF.

Joe Dooley Moving Up • Apr 04, 2018 06:47 PM

This is a horrible job. If he can win 20 games (once ever in ECU history, under the coach they just fired) I think he will be lucky. This is a place coaches go to die. Only once, ever, have they had a coach move up from this job.

Seems like this is a career finishing job for Dooley. Fired or Retired, whichever one comes first. Just too brutal of recruiting grounds in that spot of the country. Duke, UNC, Wake, NC State, South Carolina, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington and Virginia are all competing for player right there. And ECU is just in the worst spot. Competing for starters with ACC teams who would use them as 4 year projects. But competing with the mid/low-major teams for who would be ECU project players but start for 4 years at the lower major schools.

It is not a good spot to be. But, perhaps this is the job he wanted. Felt there was unfinished business here.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 04, 2018 02:55 PM

Cal getting desperate lol.

Simma down boys. Otherwise it could turn in to a loooooong offseason here. Nobody wants that.

Even if the players didn't execute Bill's gameplan, he then failed to put together a gameplan that his guys could execute. There are three questions every gameplan must answer in order to be a successful game plan. What does my opponent do well? What are the best options that exist to keep my opponent from doing what it does well? Of those options, what are my players the most capable of executing?

I do not think Bill answered the 3rd question correctly. The players were not capable of defending 1 on 1. Even if they had executed the supposed gameplan and not helped on drives, we would have gotten schooled all night long off of the drive. It was a problem all season long. So Bill Self expecting guys to play defense to an ability they hadn't shown all season was a flaw in his strategy. If he had the 08 defense, sure he could have done what he did. But this team needs to play help D.

I understand why people will continue to point to the 3pt deficit Nova created. But they tore us up even worse from 2pt, gaining an even larger advantage from that than they did the 3pt shot. Had we helped off and played our usual defense against the drive with normal rotations, I find it hard to believe that Nova would have shot 70+% from 2pt. I also think it would have helped keep them from shooting the 3pt shot as well because everyone would have known how to rotate correctly instead of some guys rotating and helping while other guys weren't.

Bill got outcoached on Saturday. And it happens, at a less than 20% clip. It is noticeable when Bill gets outcoached because, not only does it happen so rarely, but because we typically have the better players. Him and the team have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of for their performance though. Whatever gameplan Bill put together vs. Nova was a risk. Helping on the drive was as much of a risk as not helping, and it would have taken a great night on both ends to beat a red hot Nova team regardless of which plan Bill chose.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 04, 2018 12:13 PM

Smith is a projected first rounder everywhere I look.

Doke • Apr 04, 2018 12:14 AM

@joeloveshawks I think Doke needs to work on Free throws, but other than that he needs to really just work on his body and athleticism. Offensively, he is an advanced stats dream in the post. He only dunks the ball. There have been a lot of NBA players with less offensive skill than him.

What he needs to work on is his lower body and athleticism. He needs to be able to guard another 7-footer out to the 3pt line, as we saw. If he can do that, his value sky rockets.

I think part of this will come naturally. At 18, Doke still doesn't have his "man body" where all his limbs work together. I saw several times this year where he looked like a baby dear trying to walk. I think just him developing into a grown ass man will help him with coordination both defensively and perhaps even shooting free throws..

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 03, 2018 10:40 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Oubre was never competing for time with Perry for PT really. I never remember a time where Ellis played the "3." Oubre should have been playing 30mpg easy. His advanced stats are off the charts compared to all of the other guards. Had we let him play through mistakes and grow, I think he probably goes top 5 in the draft and leaves on a similar note as JJ. He was our best defender and most efficient scoring guard. He almost lead the team in steals despite the fact he played much less than any Frank or Selden.

He should have gotten all of Svi's minutes that year. Svi was a 17 year old who could barely speak any English at that point. Yet he ate up 11 mpg.

I could not confidently say Oubre was handled correctly, or in the best way to maximize the team's potential by the end of the season.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 03, 2018 07:37 PM

@BShark I don't think Self helps himself though. He trusts experienced players to a fault. Look how much of an impact De Sousa made when Self was forced to develop him.

Oubre, Cliff, Diallo and Bragg (not OAD, but probably could have been in the right circumstance I think) all got screwed coming here imo. Tons of talent that we just never unleashed.

Bill will forever be fitting square pegs into round holes. I'm not saying to go full Calipari and just hope your talent plays well enough to overcome poor strategy, but 3 out of those 4 should have been major impact players at the college level.

But then there are other guys that I think never were here mentally. Henry, Selby and Wiggs should never have played college ball. We weren't even Henry's or Selby's first choice. So that definitely doesn't help with buying in. Wiggs has literally never looked like he even likes playing basketball.

The only OAD that has seemed worth taking so far is JJ.

That's the reason I like the recruits we have this season. Dotson De Sousa and Grimes would have to have monster years to be OAD. They have something to play for instead of these higher ranked guys that are just trying to make it through a year.

After now having the Newell context, I stand by my statement.

Helping off of the drive is different than doubling the post-up.

Doubling the post vs. how to defend the drive are two separate defensive items on the gameplan. We 100% doubled the post-up. We were, however, not trying to help off of drives. Both I find to be a huge mistake in the gameplan.

  • Post ups are guarded 2s and not efficient shots, typically. Again, it only really makes sense to double the post if they are going to shoot 70% while doing it. I do not think that Brunson would have schooled us so badly in the post that we needed to help off. I do not think Spellman would have schooled us 1 on 1 in the post. So, instead of giving them contested two point shots that they would have gladly taken, we gave them layups or open 3s.

  • If your team knows how to properly rotate, it NEVER makes sense to not help stop the drive. A layup results in about 1.7 points per attempt. You would have to shoot the 3 at a 56% clip to score the same points per attempt. In this scenario, we just never rotated correctly. We expected our post player to not leave his man, instead of properly rotating over from the wing and forcing at least 2 passes to get an open shot. That is time for at least enough recovery to force either a quick or contested shot. More likely than not, resulting in a lower than 56% 3pt shot. Upon futher reflection, it looked like we were running a 4 out defensive rotation instead of a 5 out defensive rotation, and just expected our bigs to be able to stay on the perimeter with their's. Again, that is a poor gameplan if true. I will have to rewatch the game at some point to confirm. But, what that means is that we gave no help whatsoever to our worst mismatch, being Doke/De Sousa on the perimeter.

Bill did not put our guys in position to succeed. And that was only amplified by the fact Nova was scorching hot to start. This is not a knock on Bill's entire body of work. Just simply the one game. He did an amazing job with this team all season. But, for 7 minutes of the last 40 this team played, he didn't. He's human. All we can hope is that he continues to learn and adapt to the game.

KU to play in MAUI Invitational in 2019 • Apr 03, 2018 06:00 PM

@BShark Langford not transferring?

Izzo will put a good team on the court no matter what. And it will be our first game running around with froshies on a bigger stage than they have ever played on. So I am already going to chalk that game up as a loss or a surprise win.

I don't expect us to be a very good team until mid January. Not unless everyone is a very unselfish player and fully buys in. Individual talent is there, we will have to wait to see what team chemistry looks like.

Michigan Actually Plays D • Apr 03, 2018 02:21 PM

@KUSTEVE When you have a guy off the bench that can drop 30, you are probably the best team in the nation.

I don't have access to the Star, so I don't know what Newewll said. But I don't really care either. If it says that the gameplan wasn't to double the post, than it is a lie by someone.

We CLEARLY made doubling the post a part of our gameplan. Especially Brunson. I'm sure that changed in the huddle after they knocked down the first 7 or 8 threes. Then the guys might have messed it up from there. But for anyone to claim that wasn't the gameplan at the beginning is kind of ludicrous. There were several games we never once doubled the post. And the games we did, it was clear because we did it the second their big touched the ball. We didn't even double Delgado as he was actively destroying us. The double team was the gameplan. And a poor one.

Sure we played even with them after the first 7 minutes. Give Bill another shot at them today, and I think we could make it a game. But Jay's gameplan was better. He spaced the floor even more than normal, basically never posting up and forcing our bigs to run all over the floor. We in turn, played into that gameplan by doubling the post and forcing our Big to run from the opposite short corner all the way across the court to wing to try and contest a shot. That forced horrible rotations and easy looks.

@KUSTEVE Dad seems like a little much. But if he comes here, he isn’t sitting so I don’t expect any issues.

Langford • Apr 03, 2018 03:49 AM

@JayHawkFanToo I don’t see this high ceiling. 3 years in and He seems like the same player he was when he got here. A skinny kid that doesn’t play hard on defense and is a streaky shooter with no ability to create his own shot. I don’t know what upside is really left because I don’t see that changing. Vick can’t dribble and doesn’t have an aggressive bone in his body. I’d rather have one of the best scorers in Indiana High School history who seems to have some
competitive fire and more potential than Vick if he truly buys in. Of course that’s my opinion, and I do understand why others would rather have Vick and an experienced returner instead.

Langford • Apr 03, 2018 03:33 AM

@Hawk8086 He isn’t as good as the player he is “blocking” and he seems to lack any good leadership qualities.

Langford • Apr 02, 2018 11:38 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 I'm sure that Bill knows how to handle these types of parents pretty well.

Unknown topic • Apr 02, 2018 10:50 PM

The question will always be, was it worth selling the future for a WS? I'm so torn on the issue. I think, had we just kept our homegrown guys and minor leaguers, we would have been able to finally build a strong organization top to bottom. A system like the Giants or Cardinals where you keep your best prospects and bring them up as other guys leave in FA. Instead, the cupboard is bare. And we are screwed for a good while.

Langford • Apr 02, 2018 10:45 PM

@HighEliteMajor I think that Self is willing to take the risk with Vick, even if Langford doesn't come. If he leaves, it is a small hole to fill, imo. We would still have 4 guards, and a 5th perimeter player in KJ if we needed him to play on the perimeter. Their won't be some gaping hole if he leaves and Langford doesn't come, so I don't think Self cares if he hurts any feelings.

I think it is worth the risk to just be straight up with Vick, because if for some reason he does come back, knowing he would be the super sub 6th man, that mitigates any potential chemistry problems. You just tell him, Langford is coming, and he is going to start barring any unforeseen events. We would love for you to stay, but we understand if you would rather pursue other opportunities instead.

If somehow we got both, good gosh almighty. It would finally give us a guy capable of scoring 20 coming off the bench. A luxury we haven't had in a long, long time. That would be the dream.

As far as Cunliffe goes, I would have to agree. He should have gone to a smaller school. It sounds like the staff lied to him and said he would get a lot of PT and took him mostly as an insurance policy. He was used and abused. I feel bad for the guy, but I could honestly see him being a key piece to a mid-major team that makes tournament noise in a few years. I wish him the best, he has seemed like nothing but a great teammate even through rough circumstances.
