@mayjay Chicago Sun not only reported it, but then doubled down on it after the Davis' threatened a lawsuit saying they had sources from 3 separate universities that claimed Davis Sr. asked them for anywhere from $125k to $150k.

Wofford is 2-0 against the ACC this season.

@jaybate-1.0 More so for Billy... De Sousa will be a two month long project. If we get De Sousa and no Billy, KU could end up the most dangerous 4 seed the tournament has seen in a long time.

Trae Young • Dec 20, 2017 05:31 PM

Maybe Young was the straw that broke the camel's back. Maybe he was the last kid Self recruited and didn't guarantee a starting spot. So he said f*ck that, and gave Dotson and Grimes his word they would start.

Young could be the reason Bill goes on a crazy stretch of recruiting. Obviously this is me looking at it glass full... I wish we got Trae real, realy bad.

Trae Young • Dec 20, 2017 05:29 PM

Young at PG would have been amazing. Would have let us bring Newman off the bench. Would have let us play fast all the time.

Would have been beautiful.

Another website said that we expect to have news on both by the 26th. Silvio for sure by then, Preston is a maybe still, but that if it isn't by then, soon after.

New Tax Legislation • Dec 20, 2017 05:22 PM

@justanotherfan This does nothing to help income inequality either.

The last two times we instituted a trickle-down theory, we had the two largest gains in income inequality. Which would be one of the main reasons for stagnant wages.

@jaybate-1.0 Bill Said something after the game. Said he hopes this was the last game they had to play small.

I Am in Awe of this Team Now • Dec 19, 2017 11:14 PM

@justanotherfan His shot is off because his shot has been flat.

Noticed last game his 3pt shot was flat. He had really nice arch on his mid range jumpers he was hitting. But he kept going off the front iron with a flat shot last game.

I Am in Awe of this Team Now • Dec 19, 2017 11:13 PM

@HighEliteMajor I'm not overlooking it. I said before, that when you have 4 players that give up points, having a 5th guy who doesn't is useless. Right now we play a style of basketball that is basically attempting to outscore the opponent instead of stopping them from scoring.

You just have a love for Garrett that makes you blind. His stats vs. P5 competition are absolutely atrocious. As has been the eye test. The double whammy.

He looks like an absolute stud in the future. Don't get me wrong. I'm not sure he won't leave Lawrence one of the All-time best defenders or one of the top 5 in steals. But he is such a liability on offense right now. Against teams with real talent, he turns the ball over more than he assists, he rebounds at a pedestrian rate, and he shoots as well as a blind archer.

He is the perfect guy to have off the bench to give the team some life or send a message. He will come in and hustle and do little things and not screw things up. But he isn't going to win us games.

I hope you're right and I'm wrong. But nothing from Garrett has shown me that will change this season.

@justanotherfan Very, very, very well said.

I Am in Awe of this Team Now • Dec 19, 2017 04:05 PM

Marcus Garrett's last 6 games he has 6 points, 5 assists, 4 turnovers, 7 steals, 0 Blocks, 23 rebounds, is 0 for 7 from 3 point range, has not shot a free throw, and is shooting 21% from the field.

He is not playing anywhere near the same as he did the first 5 games. The Marcus Garret from the first 5 games was a completely different player than the one we are seeing now. I don't know if it is confidence or competition, but last night Cunliffe scored more points and hit more 3s (one) than Garrett has in 6 games.

I just don't see Garrett as ready to contribute.

I Am in Awe of this Team Now • Dec 19, 2017 03:57 PM

@HighEliteMajor I definitely like Garrett in the future. But I still think he has no business being out there this year at all.

I thought even Cunliffe looked much better than Garrett last night and would even play him over Garrett.

The thing is, I don't trust Garrett. Even when he gets a steal, we rarely convert on the other end. Because either he is the one leading the break, or we have to pull it back because he doesn't feel comfortable attacking the basket in the open court. His defense is completely worthless because he offense is so bad. Sure we need to put him in a position to be a threat. But if he doesn't fit in the offense, he doesn't fit.

Cunliffe can score in transition, he is long and can play D, and he can actually shoot a 3. Of course much of that is based on last night. But in extended minutes, Cunliffe played a better game than Garrett. And, more importantly, he fits what this team is trying to do. Just don't feel that same way about MG.

I Am in Awe of this Team Now • Dec 19, 2017 03:50 PM

@BigBad Yes and no. Our offense doesn't really match him. First, the ball moves so quickly that getting the right angle at the right time is difficult.

Second, sometimes we shoot the ball so quickly that he barely has enough time to get down the floor.

Third, it appears our guards forget that he exists for stretches of the game and Bill has to remind them to get him the ball. If you are a big man and working hard over and over and then you never get the ball, it is hard to keep putting in the work.

Ultimately, the guy is shooting at an incredible rate. Even if with added usage he was only shooting 60%, that would still be amazingly efficient.

He needs the ball more.

I Am in Awe of this Team Now • Dec 19, 2017 02:53 PM

@BeddieKU23 I actually like the idea of putting him in the high post and letting him catch the ball on at the free throw line. I think that he could hit that shot and gain some confidence. Or, drive the ball and get fouled or dish to Doke. Definitely like where your head is on this.

No matter what though, Bill has to find a way to make defenses guard him. He may also need to bring in an outside consultant to help the guards with driving and finishing in the lane. It truly is embarrassing how bad we are at driving the ball.

New Tax Legislation • Dec 18, 2017 10:59 PM

@dylans I'm not trying to argue. Just trying to get a since of your opinion.

What ramifications would have to occur for you to oppose this bill?

New Tax Legislation • Dec 18, 2017 09:50 PM

Not a fan.

Trickle down economics has never worked, never will work and Kansas is proof of that. The Brownback experiment was exactly this. Huge tax cuts on businesses didn't work. They just pocket the money. If I am running a successful business with the current rules, and then you make the game easier, do you think I'm going to reinvest that money? Absolutely not. I'm going to keep running the same business that was successful before and then just pocket the extra money because my business is running fine without that extra cash. It is completely illogical to think that corporations would reinvest that money in more jobs when there is no incentive for them to do such a thing.

This tax bill was a huge disappointment and against what true conservatives would want at this time. Most are just too stupid to realize it because they are brainwashed. Republicans cry and cry about Democrats increasing the deficit and then they pass a bill that will take $1.5 Trillion and put it in the pockets of the rich. Absolutely ridiculous. The short-term benefit will come at what cost? In order to pay for this, expect to see some news about social security or medicare in the next few months. Me, my kids and their kids will only have to work until we are 80 now just so a few extremely rich people could become even richer.

Eye rolls all around on this one.

I Am in Awe of this Team Now • Dec 18, 2017 08:04 PM

@BeddieKU23 I just think we don't want him shooting the ball period. Not this year at least.

It is a good point about DG. But then let's just have someone else bring the ball up and he can wait for them at half court lol. If someone presses he can come get it.

I Am in Awe of this Team Now • Dec 18, 2017 07:26 PM

Newman played poorly on offense again. But I watched the replay yesterday morning and focused soley on him and his D was fine. As was his rebounding.

Newman played his ass off, the guy just has the yips on the offensive end. It happens to guys. If he can see a couple of shots go down I think his confidence will come back. But he is 100% not the issue with this team. Arguing between playing him or playing Garrett is pointless. Because if we have to play Garrett, this team doesn't have it. This team's best chance to make it in the tourney is to continue to play Newman and hope he breaks out. Because Garrett is so limited offensively he really has no upside this year. It will take tens of thousands of shots before he is a threat. Newman on the other hand, is capable of putting the basketball in the hoop.

A couple of other notes:
- This team does not give Doke the ball enough. He had 26 on a night he should have gone for 35-40.
- Why do we walk the ball up the court? Devonte is just crossing half court at 22 seconds. We are only forcing our opponents to guard for 10 or so seconds. If you give Doke 25 seconds to post up, at some point he will be open for an easy lob pass.
- We continue to get burned for easy buckets. And yet we have not seen one possession of zone on D yet. This team is not deep enough or talented enough defensively to win the tournament playing M2M unless everyone gets hot at the right time. That is unless we try and see what a Zone does.
- Tim Miles just showed how to beat Bill Self out of a timeout. Bill calls an end of half/game timeout and you just switch to zone.

Nice optimism. I hope this is a classic kick-in-the-butt week that has re-charged some of these guys. I can imagine Self has their attention after a home loss. Normally 1 loss gets that focus so I'm still guarding my optimism with our current roster issues. Newman banged up, Cunliffe expectedly will be rusty? Defensive issues that look more of a long range fix then a quick fix. I'm certainly not trying to be negative, just voicing an opinion as I see it currently. We'll see what happens

After reading @big12basketblog 's breakdown, I was surprised at just how bad the D was. I mean I know I was watching it and thinking, "damn, we can't guard anyone." I just didn't realize that they scored about an extra 15 points from terrible close-outs and bad rotations. Those things can be fixed in a week.

Rebounding can also improve dramatically in a week, providing it becomes a mindset. I would have loved to hear that we busted out that Kelvin Sampson rim bubble for one practice and just literally just practiced rebounding for 3 hours. But either way, I'm sure that Bill cranked that up a notch this week.

These guys are physically able to guard as well. I mean all of them are top 100 guys. They are athletic enough to guard the man in front of them as long as they are giving the effort to do such a thing.

I also think Bill has now been given enough time to review the tape himself. Once is a fluke, twice means there is something wrong. And part of our problem has been schematically we were beaten twice. Bill has only lost 3 games in a row once in his KU career. It means the man knows how to make adjustments and correct things that have been exploited. I have full confidence he will do the same thing.

Finally, I also think that we didn't consider guard depth to be a problem. Not like post play at least, so we didn't think about it. The addition of Cunliffe will allow us to do one thing I noticed Nova do, and I feel that it REALLY helps them succeed at small ball. They press the ball up the court and they try to make the first pass the offense makes, hell. Ultimately, their goal is to not allow the opponents to start their offense until 20 seconds. With about 10 seconds left on a shot clock, players start to press and take bad shots. So they really only play 10 seconds of D where they have to rotate and help. But the only way you can do that is by having enough depth to do it.

Bill doesn't lose 3 in a row. I definitely don't expect it to happen tomorrow.

Ok so even I know • Dec 15, 2017 04:25 PM

ESPN just bought the regional Fox channel and there is supposed to start being local news shows apparently. That I could really enjoy I think.

Do we end the losing streak tomm? • Dec 15, 2017 04:11 PM

I feel sorry for Nebraska. Our guys will come out motivated. A solid week of Bill Self screaming in their ears is just what the doctor ordered.

I am excited to see a lineup of DG, Garrett, Vick, Cunliffe, and Doke. I think that group might be able to really play some D and rebound as well as playing 2 posts. Honestly, that might be our best lineup if the can play tight D. Then you have Svi and Newman ready to provide an offensive spark whenever we look to be going cold offensively.

Fluff piece on Cunliffe • Dec 14, 2017 02:56 PM

@HighEliteMajor I think you are seeing Garrett as an individual piece and not a piece of the team.

Individually, he has been solid. But being the best defender when the other 4 are porous really has no value. So essentially, this team has to outscore the other team. Garrett providing no offense hurts this team more than his good defense helps it.

Word is that test scores come in on Friday.

Vent Here.... • Dec 13, 2017 08:32 PM

@drgnslayr I hate high ball switches. It let's the offense dictate where they want to go and the pace they want to go there at.

It also hurts your help defense when one of your help defenders is running away as soon as the drive starts. There has been a pattern the last two games. First, create a switch. 2nd, immediately follow that switch with a REALLY high ball screen. That takes two help defenders out of the play almost immediately. 3rd, drive the ball and attempt to beat Doke to the rim.

It has resulted in too many layups that aren't being contested.

That same thing can play out differently if we hedge immediately instead of switch. First, when they do a little handoff up top, instead of the switch it triggers a rotation. If the defender can't fight through the handoff, and the player has an open drive, help defense plays off and we force a 3. If we rotate correctly, the man beat by the handoff will be rotating to defend the guy shooting the 3. He will probably be late and we will give up an open 3, but it shouldn't be a comfortable 3 pointer. This also leaves Doke at the rim for protection if the driver doesn't kick it out for 3.

If the defender doesn't get caught up in the handoff and forces the REALLY high ball screen, we can hedge and trap like we used to, they will have to make three timely passes to get it to a wide open guy.

If you have 5 - 6'8 guys who can guard everyone, sure switching makes sense. Otherwise, hedging is the way to go.

Vent Here.... • Dec 13, 2017 05:33 PM

@BeddieKU23 I think we have lulled ourselves to sleep by switching too much. We need to start hedging and trapping off of hedges like we do when we play 2 bigs. Then everyone else rotates hard and fast.

Langford • Dec 13, 2017 05:30 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 It isn't an eye injury lol.

Vent Here.... • Dec 13, 2017 04:28 PM

@drgnslayr I kind of want Bill to go full bad ball for a little while. Force the guards to drive and learn how to finish in the lane. After that, slowly loosen the rains and open the the trey again. But the first thing we have to do is prove to ourselves that we can score inside, even with a 4 guard lineup.

That and then just play hellacious D. Get these guys flying all over the court and create some havoc.

Self wishes he could've gotten this guy • Dec 13, 2017 04:17 PM

@drgnslayr Exciting guy to watch. I really didn't see this explosion coming from him his freshmen year. I honestly thought he was just another Frankamp.... Boy was I wrong.

Self wishes he could've gotten this guy • Dec 13, 2017 03:57 PM

Really disappointing. Especially having known his dad was paid for him to go to Alabama. And the penalty, a 1 game suspension.

What a joke.

We really could have used him or T-Young. Or Duvall. Really, just another guard who can score somewhere on the court besides a 3 pointer. But more importantly, the DeAndre Ayton miss is what has killed us the most.

Langford • Dec 13, 2017 03:50 PM

@justanotherfan I'm optimistic that this will actually help him.

Hopefully he can't do anything but the basics the next couple of days, and he watches a ton of film. Then, he gets thrown back into the mix as soon as he is cleared and instead of pressing he just lets the game come to him. I think his major problem has been him trying to force the issue instead of just letting open shots come to him.

Fluff piece on Cunliffe • Dec 13, 2017 03:40 PM

This team needs some athleticism on the floor. I'm hoping that he can be active on D, give us the ability to have two guards who can rebound on the floor at once and just make open 3's at a 40% clip.

He could help potentially help a ton on D. But I'm not sure he solves any of our problems offensively unless he grows 3 inches and puts on 40lbs by Saturday.

2018 Kansas Jayhawks Football Recruiting • Dec 13, 2017 02:35 AM

@kjayhawks I definitely think Bowen should be fired. I'm on the fence on if they should fire Beaty. I think they have to give him one more year to show they will give the next coach the same leniency. But I do agree, this season was a complete embarrassment and that Beaty wouldn't make it a 4th year for any other program in the country.

Just don't know who would take the job or that throwing millions at a guy fixes the program.

Newman • Dec 12, 2017 09:37 PM

@BigBad His inconsistent jump shot is based on what? He has made 3s 40% of the time and only shot below 33% once this season in a very poor shooting performance against Syracuse. I would consider that pretty consistent.

He is shooting 2pt shots at a higher percentage than both Svi and DG. However, I do agree that he needs to work on his finishing. But my point is that he is finishing as well as two other guys on the team who aren't getting crushed for the same exact thing.

His points allowed per 100 possessions is better than Vick and Svi. So his defense has been at the very least AS bad as theirs. And yet, they aren't getting bashed the same way.

Langford • Dec 12, 2017 08:49 PM

@BeddieKU23 lol I have no idea. All I know is that it is a problem I would like to have.

Newman • Dec 12, 2017 08:37 PM

If Newman wasn't ranked so highly coming out of High School, everyone here would be more than happy with his play. I just think everyone expected him to be the second coming of B-Mac, only better.

Thing is, we are only 1 quarter through the season and he could still crank it up a notch if he could just get comfortable.

Langford • Dec 12, 2017 08:22 PM

@BeddieKU23 Idk, "Malik Newman, Sixth Man", has a nice ring to it if you ask me...

Malik is putting up almost identical numbers to Junior Devonte. So I just don't think that we have fair expectations for the guy. I guess I'm just not seeing the same Malik everyone else is. To me, the guy looks like a very solid guard who just isn't in sync with everyone else quite yet. He is shooting the 3 at a 40% clip. He is rebounding well for a guard. He is playing just as bad of defense as anyone else.

The truth is we expected Malik to shoot the 3 at a 50% clip, average 5 assists, be a great defender and show that he should be in the NBA already. Those were lofty expectations. But looking purely at the numbers, we can see that Malik has been a very capable college guard so far this season. And I'd love to have him back.

Langford • Dec 12, 2017 04:20 PM

Vick is going anywhere from 19 to undrafted on mocks.

Newman also looking like he will be back. Or in Europe I guess.

I do want me some Langford, but a returning Newman and Vick combo could be just what the doctor ordered to help these two young studs we have coming in.

At this point, next year's roster projects:

  • PG: Dotson, Moore
  • SG: Grimes, Newman
  • SF: Vick, Garrett, Cunliffe
  • PF: Lawson, De Sousa, Lightfoot, Lawson
  • C: Doke, McCormack

And, I haven't seen Preston on boards lately... We are a scholarship over if nobody leaves early. That means either someone is getting forced out or someone is going pro. Only person you could really force out would be Lightfoot. So either Billy, Newman or Vick would need to go pro.

Either way, next year's team is f-ing stacked. And our post depth is going to be out of this world.

Vent Here.... • Dec 11, 2017 08:15 PM

@Blown I guess I haven't seen that quite yet. No more so than any of the other starters. Nobody can make a layup or attack the rim effectively. Svi, Vick and DG all take terrible 3s.

Honestly, to me, it has looked like everyone is just playing for their draft stock.

DeSousa • Dec 11, 2017 05:03 PM

Well I hope he can help. I'm worried that he will be so far behind that he might not be any better than Mitch. But if he is a quick learner, and the upperclassmen utilize that gym in the dorm to run through the playbook with him whenever they can, there is definitely some upside.

Vent Here.... • Dec 11, 2017 05:00 PM

@Blown What is Malik doing that is holding the offense back?

Stop telling me Lightfoot is... • Dec 11, 2017 04:46 PM

@BeddieKU23 DG has to start being able to take it to the hole and finish though. Right now, nobody is collapsing on us and challenging us to finish layups 1 on 1. We aren't making opponents pay for doing that so we can't collapse a defense and reopen the 3 point game.

Stop telling me Lightfoot is... • Dec 10, 2017 09:32 PM

@BShark it won’t happen. But if it were to happen, now would be the perfect time to put it in.

We would actually have a pretty dirty 2-3 zone imo.

Next year • Dec 10, 2017 09:28 PM

I am super pumped for next season. But enjoy the ride this year. Will be highs and lows. But if they get hot at the right time, this season will still be a lot of fun.

Stop telling me Lightfoot is... • Dec 10, 2017 09:26 PM

Time to put in and commit to zone.

We can’t keep people out of the lane already. We suck at rebounding already. And our bench sucks.

Time to slow the game down and try to keep Doke on the floor for 35 minutes.

@JayHawkFanToo We are not a top 10 team.

@HighEliteMajor I can't argue with that take. Much of my opinion is based on the eye test. I see Newman as a much better player than he has been to this point. I also think we will see some of Garretts stats come back down to earth when we get into conference play.

Garrett HAS been the better player to this point. No question. But Newman HAS to be the better player in the future.

I also think one thing that Newman does is force a 4 man to guard Vick. And we have been able to exploit that matchup all season long. In fact, it has been our best offensive weapon. So even though Newman may not seem like he is playing great, he has helped us to exploit a mismatch.
