Och back so…
@BShark seems like unless Bill has something going behind the scenes that it would be shocking to me.
But I don’t count out anything now. You’re selling the starting PG role at a top tier university with both money and a NC to offer. Salty Iguana is about to introduce the Marcus Carrgarita. He’s about to get a commercial deal with a local dealership with they argue who is the “Carr expert.”
I genuinely think it will be a bidding war. And he’s a guy you make someone else leave for.
@FarmerJayhawk is it wrong if I would prefer this to Och?
That is a D1 player I don’t even care. Holy crap that is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time.
I personally like learning about new wonder-supplements recently found deep in the Andes Mountains.
This week is like the week from hell for me work wise - but then I get married Saturday. So big week haha.
You love to see it
@Marco In what way would the taxpayer be footing this bill?
I'm really trying to think how this will change football at all, and I really don't see it. You still have to recruit well and build a good program. A lot harder to do that with 100 players than 13.
A basketball team can be bought, but a football team still has to be developed.
@approxinfinity Exactly. Free housing. Free food. Free school. $75k+ in salary. Free training with an elite staff. And still the potential to develop into a top tier draft pick.
I wonder if KU would have been willing to pony up and pay $500k for Dotson to stay and play this last season... My guess is absolutely. But maybe I'm wrong.
@approxinfinity wouldn’t earning an income make players more likely to stay?
My first thought is now you have to make the decision between staying in school and making money or leaving for the NBA and giving up two years of guaranteed income to go chase the NBA.
I think it would make borderline guys think twice about leaving.
@BigBad nothing is stopping you from rooting on your local NAIA or D3 school.
Did you really only watch because players weren’t legally getting paid?
I guess how does this change it for you from what it is right now?
This is a quote that should have the NCAA scrambling to implement NIL rules ASAP:
"All of the restaurants in a region cannot come together to cut cooks' wages on the theory that 'customers prefer' to eat food from low-paid cooks," Kavanaugh continued. "Law firms cannot conspire to cabin lawyers' salaries in the name of providing legal services out of a 'love of the law.' Hospitals cannot agree to cap nurses' income in order to create a 'purer' form of helping the sick. News organizations cannot join forces to curtail pay to reporters to preserve a 'tradition' of public-minded journalism. Movie studios cannot collude to slash benefits to camera crews to kindle a 'spirit of amateurism' in Hollywood. Price-fixing labor is price-fixing labor."
Honestly unreal. Philly gifting the Hawks a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. This series should be over.
@BShark I'm sure that Beard took that job with the understanding he would be give the "resources" to win.
Hard to be mad not landing him when we dropped bags for Remy and Yesufu.
Are we comparing ourselves to other schools? I mean what is the criteria for saying Bill Self doesn't develop wings?
@justanotherfan said in Coach K to retire after 21-22 season:
So why can't KU develop wings?
Why doesn't KU (particularly under Self) develop wing talent more consistently? That's a question we have to answer, because top recruits are asking that same question.
I pretty strongly disagree with this entire premise.
Also we keep landing guys. Gradey Dick will be here in 2022 to replace NBA draftee Ochai Agbaji.
No offense to Zach, but I'd be SHOCKED if he weighted 221. I'd have to see it in person to believe it...
@approxinfinity they would have thrown her.
But luckily for them game pushed to tomorrow
This is an awesome story
If the new rule is in place just a couple of years ago, Ja Morant doesn't play a 2nd season at Murray State. Dude would have been a Kentucky Wildcat making $500k in cash under the table, and I have zero doubt in my mind about that.
The penalty right now for paying recruits is supposed to be major suspension, level I violations, etc. And schools still do it... How do you prove tampering if it is being done by ShoeCo in the background?
It is a penalty to tamper and poach players now, and coaches were still able to get it done. It is all about circumventing direct contact, and that isn't very hard. Coaches can call old AAU coaches, ShoeCo Reps, etc and ask about a players availability. Andrew Slater damn near projected every single transfers destination before they even officially decomitted.
It is just too easy.
With the amount of tampering we saw this year before teams even get really good at it, I would start to lean towards this being the death of the low and mid-major. They won't get high-end HS prospects still. And anyone who does make it through the cracks can now get poached.
I do think low-end P5 programs have the opportunity to maybe snag some better HS talent than previously was available. And should a good coach be able to keep a roster intact they might be able to do some damage. But I just think that will be easier said than done...
Really can't understate the importance of landing a high-level C from one of the best rushing attacks in CFB with a new playbook being implemented. He can come in and basically be an extra coach on the field. He already knows the calls and adjustments. It is HUGE.
Would love to see LL poach some more MAC talent that is a little underrated by the P5 schools.
Not worried about QB in the immediate future. Just get going in the right direction and keep some continuity for a few years. That alone will go a long ways...
I'm thinking of him as Isaiah Moss 2.0.
Thank God. He was not a KU level player
Love this.
@justanotherfan Not seeing it with this bunch.... I'd love for you to speculate who that could be, and who's minutes they would take.
@justanotherfan Who on the bench is a good defensive talent?
- Braun - Meh
- JCL - Meh
- Pettiford - Probably not as a freshman
- Cuffe - Redshirt
- Mitch - was a backup a year ago
- Martin - Doesn't strike me as a top tier defender
- Clemence - looks like he will need to be in a college weight program first
- Adams - Might get some time, might be too raw
- Curry - Seems like a guy who would foul out in about 18 minutes
Not sure Self has another option than to play the presumed 5 starters as many minutes as they can handle.
@BShark Curry seems like he could use a redshirt... Depends on who we land if Harris leaves
@approxinfinity if the Harris rumors are true a lot of Jayhawk fans are going to be sad.
@Marco I didn't say you said he wouldn't.
Dave was playing good ball by the end of the season. The start was BAD. But he had a great conference season and I think he will have a good 2021-2022 campaign.
@BShark It will definitely be refreshing to see guards getting layups again.
Probably one of the more underrated improvements in next year's squad will be transition buckets.... Remy and Yesufu should help there a ton.
Fourth school lol. Unreal.
@BShark I'm scratching my head a bit, but he's a good player...
@BeddieKU23 123 teams worth of players.
I hope Clemence can give us some minutes this year. But I just struggle to see it. Guy can flat out shoot it though. Always intriguing.
I could see a scenario where Clemence and C. Martin come in if the offense is stagnant and we do some pick and pop/iso ball with Remy. You could theoretically iso him and put Clemence, C. Martin, Ochai and Yesufu on the perimeter in catch and shoot situations. Then you just let Remy go to work and hope he makes the smart basketball play. Very NBA, but it could be pretty effective.
@BShark Tough being a bag man in college hoops these days... Can't even get officials to pay a few hundred thousand to sweep something under the rug.
@BShark "Re-offered?"
Did we pull his past offer?
@drgnslayr I actually think we are in a great spot to keep this group in tact.
Harris and Braun could potentially. But I don’t expect it
I really thought we were going to end up having to watch Wheeler play 25 mpg there for a minute...
@BeddieKU23 Agree so much. The starting five of Martin/Yesufu/Ochai/Wilson/Dave is a top 5 team. And honestly unreal how good of an offensive team you're looking at right there.
Then you have Braun off the bench where you aren't asking him to be too much other than a defender and a spot up shooter. You can give Remy and Yesufu breaks by bringing in Harris and shouldn't see crazy dropoff. And that will even let Remy slide off the ball which I think could be good for him.
Anything Pettiford gives you is gravy at this point.
We just need one of the new big guys to not be bad and this team is a contender. I do think Curry, of all of the bigs, brings a physical ability and presence that is playable at this level. If Bill takes the season-long view with him, he will play early and often with the hope that he develops by the end of the year. Clemence is a big question mark, but Bill Self history has taught me not to expect anything from freshman bigs.
Either way this team has the pieces to make noise.
@BShark bagley next 😎😎😎
Just thinking of those late night games is already making me tired
@BShark This transfer still chaps my ass (even if he wasn't playing well as a frosh)
Poor guy
I do think that the kind of prep Och is doing right now is probably good for him. While I'm sure he puts in a lot of work normally, this summer will hopefully push him and help him work on things he struggles with (like his handles). Instead of being stuck in the same routine which has clearly not helped him develop enough.
