Goodbye Tharpe? β€’ May 01, 2014 05:41 PM

@wrwlumpy : And before that they were saying EJ over Taylor.... Got to love the "if ____ was in there we would have won" because can we truly prove that would have changed any outcomes at all????

Goodbye Tharpe? β€’ May 01, 2014 05:28 PM

When asked by the Journal-World if he could confirm whether Tharpe was leaving, KU coach Bill Self said "not yet" in a text message.

Looks like it could be real.

Other B12 Teams Please Stand Up! β€’ May 01, 2014 02:11 PM

@icthawkfan316 @RockChalkinTexas : "The Mayor" has been linked to several NBA jobs so far. Of course the T-Wolves were rumored as a place he could go since he spent time there as a player and in the front office. He's also been linked to Golden State if they part ways with Mark Jackson. He was mentioned in the Knicks opening as a 3rd possibility behind Kerr and Kevin Ollie. Maybe he's ahead of Ollie but Phil Jackson wants Kerr. And as you bring up ict, the Lakers job is an option. I'm sure if i googled Freddie his name would pop up in other openings like the Utah one and the possible opening in Indy if they get ousted by Atlanta. This is all from College Sports Nation on XM.

@RockChalkinTexas : Who bleeped out the curse words in that story?? Because there was a S bomb missed in the first paragraph. I really don't care but I noticed the other two S's are #pounded out and thought well ####, if it's a program it missed one, if it's a direct copy/paste then Tom let one slip, and if you tried to tame this wild beast you left one flying.

I'm glad that's over too. Hopefully Self can get Graham to commit now. Barnes gets guys to the L but I'm not so sure he develops his guys like Self and Brown can/do. My uncle is a diehard ut fan (he graduated from there back in the 90's) and he says a lot of horns fans are tired of Barnes. If you think about it he's done no better, and probably worse than Mack did while at ut with pretty much the same opportunities. At least Mack won a title!

Barnes will be picked to finish 2nd or 3rd. Finish 5th or 6th though. Typical Rick.

One More Reason For Turner To Leave His State... β€’ Apr 24, 2014 02:47 PM

@approxinfinity : Even more shocking is the guy that wrote that piece is a KU fan. Not sure it's as done of a deal as he thinks.

One More Reason For Turner To Leave His State... β€’ Apr 23, 2014 08:56 PM

@JayHawkFanToo : Yeah that's the site I looked at to see what their scholarship status was. I'd read were some people were still thinking Turner was a possibility for uk but adding him would put them at two over the limit so I don't see how people think he's considering uk.

A Nation of KU fans β€’ Apr 23, 2014 06:08 PM

Born and raised in the SEK. In my hometown most of the residents were staters. We had a kid from our school playing football for them so that led most people to wear purple. Well that and it was a small FARMING community. But my fandom was with the Jayhawks because my grandfather was a Jayhawk back in his day. Plus my aunt would take me and my friends to the Barnstorming games at Neosho CC in Chanute. There was a time that I thought about attending KU for my profession but on my college visit to KU Med my buddies car got stripped in broad daylight two blocks from the hospital. Decided Springfield Mo was a better option. Worked and went to school in Springfield for 10 years. While in Spgf I attended one late night when it was actually late night. Currently I'm still stuck in sec country but close enough to the border to pick up Big12 games on local stations but not close enough to be blacked out on ESPN Full Court games. My wife and I try to get to a couple a games a year even though it's a 4 hour drive. We make it worth our while though and stay after to meet the players.

One More Reason For Turner To Leave His State... β€’ Apr 23, 2014 05:49 PM

Maybe I missed something but if the twins don't go pro at kentucky won't they be at 1 over on the scholarship limit. We all know that he can and will move mountains to free up a 'ship for a diaper dandy over a vet like the best of them (coaches) but doesn't it make it highly unlikely that the slime ball could dump two scholarships?? Or do they play by the womens rules and get 15?

Former KU players β€’ Apr 23, 2014 04:27 PM

@Virgil_Caine : Like wise on the dislike for him while at U of F but putting that aside I really like his hustle. He's a more talented version of our KYo. Gives 115%.

Former KU players β€’ Apr 23, 2014 03:42 PM

@JRyman : Yeah I watched the replay on that. That's all good in my book since they are both battling it out on the court.

But when Drew doesn't need to wash his head band since he hasn't used it all night and is acting like Captain Chuckles on the bench when his former classmate, teammate clanks a pressure FT I think he should have a little class and not laugh.

Agreed @drgnslayr , who cares about the NBA really? I only keep track of our former Hawks and hope they all do well.

Former KU players β€’ Apr 23, 2014 02:02 PM

I don't know if anyone else watched the Bulls vs Wizards game last night but if you didn't Kirk had a chance to tie the game in OT with 5 seconds or so left. Well he missed the first free throw and of course TNT cuts to Drew giggling like an ass. If I'm Kirk I'd tweet his pine riding ass a quick fix to pick the splinters out.

Gooden stats: 2 minutes total last night.

Kirk played most if not all of the fourth and all of OT. 23 minutes total for the game.

I just hate to see one Jayhawk laugh at another misfortunes. Real D-head move.

One More Reason For Turner To Leave His State... β€’ Apr 23, 2014 01:48 PM

UT HC Strong has caught some crap lately for this comment about not winning a championship this season.

"We have everything available, and I don't know why we can't be successful," Strong said via the Austin American-Statesman. "There's no reason for us not to be. Now, I can't tell you how soon it's going to be. Don't hold me to that. Don't say, 'Ooh, coach said next year we'll be in the national ...' We will not be in the national championship game."

Although he's telling the truth many think he's giving up on this season already...

List of transfers... β€’ Apr 17, 2014 06:28 PM

I see J-Mychal Reese and his pops are on the list for mid-semester transfers. Since a&m left the BigXII I don't follow them and since they suck neither does the national media so the Reeses' being dismissed (rumored drug use) early in the year slipped by me. Looks like we (KU) got lucky on missing out on him/them.....

Red Pill or Blue Pill? β€’ Apr 07, 2014 12:49 PM

If @HEM were a fan of either uCon or kentucky his head would have exploded from frustration last season when uCon was banned from post season play or when tucky was losing to Bob Morris. Or he'd have been put on a 96 hour hold at the local mental hospital. "Those coaches should have been fired last year!!!"

Interesting TV for this weekend. β€’ Apr 03, 2014 01:15 PM

Last Saturday I took my son to a school function that was an all day event. I figured the game would be on CBS so the Dish's Hopper would have it on "Prime Time Anytime" so I didn't need to set it to record. Luckily my wife is a fan and checked to see the game times and noticed it was on TBS and that I hadn't set them to record or else I would have missed most of the first game and would have had to watch the second live... I hate commercials. I thought the same thing about the people that don't have cable and still use bunny ears. Loved the half of Kentucky joke!

How desperate are we for a PG exactly? β€’ Apr 01, 2014 07:57 PM

Former fan of Conan back in the day. Pre-TBS. Don't have the time now days with a wife and family so I'm not sure if he still does this skit anymore:

In the year two thousand, in the year two thous-and...

I predict there will be screaming about Mason/Frankamp and wanting the back up to get the others minutes because the starter won't cut it. Just like we did this year with Tharpe and . Which is eerily similar to the year before that with EJ and Tharpe. Which is also eerily similar to the Taylor Brady Reed and EJ debates...

Tournament Success Is The Only Success β€’ Mar 29, 2014 03:16 PM

You can bash my couch. You can run down KUs season. But how dare you call my HD TV pathetic!!

Those calling for Ellis to play the 3 need to think about this. Perry got scorched, burned, schooled, punk'd, ect. by every single hybrid 4 that can score from outside. Georges Niang. Jabari Parker. Jonathan Holmes. Now do you want Ellis stepping out and guarding the same guys that Wiggins was tasked with shutting down this past year?? I sure as hell don't. Honestly I didn't think Perry could guard most 4s this year, not just the guys I mentioned. In the games that featured a serviceable 4, that guy always seemed to be the leading scorer. Ellis needs to man up and learned not to be pushed around so easily. He needs to figure out how he can finish with contact and not pirouette when he goes up. He needs to work on his quickness if he wants to see the 3. He needs to work on rebounding the ball with force, securing the board, and grabbing it with TWO hands.

Loss Starts With Self β€’ Mar 24, 2014 04:28 PM

By no means do I want to be a team that lives and dies by the jump shot/three like Duke but it would be nice to have a sure fire option that would open up the inside and spread the defense for the bigs and driving. When Heslip, Forte, Frazier II are roaming the perimeter you know teams running a zone are shading their way more. Or in M2M their guy isn't sagging as much to clog the lane (unless you play for Kansas then you still do that...) which gives their bigs a little more space and their slashers less hands to swat and swipe the ball.

All I want is for someone to consistently make teams pay for going under screens like we do. For someone that WE can find before the D sets up that is simply lights out. The guy that can make a 7 point deficit go bye-bye in 26 seconds. Heslip was 47.3% from 3 this past year. Frazier II and Forte were 44%. That's what I want to see from someone wearing a KU jersey. Instead we have lights out guys in the low 30's. :'(

Loss Starts With Self β€’ Mar 24, 2014 03:11 PM

1). I've debated this with someone before but this is another team (coaches and players) L. Self didn't make the right calls early enough, at the right times, or at all. The players, excluding Black, didn't play with the passion and desire to win yesterday. Heads were hanging and their body language was very poor for most of the game and it was like that for most of the season when things weren't going well. It's amazing to me when one guy plays like a pile of crap the whole team takes on that play like crap attitude. And what hurt us the most was valuing the possession never appeared to be a concern for this team. We turned it over on average 19% of our possessions and turned the opponents over less. Tharpe isn't the only to blame here. Traylor, Wiggins, Selden, ect were all bad passers and traveling machines.

2). We need to learn how to drive the lane and draw fouls. Too often when someone does get into the paint they shy away from the contact. Picking up early and often fouls on the other teams bigs, kind of like what teams try to do to us, should be something we work on every year. Especially when our MO is pounding it inside. If we can foul up their bigs early and often then our High-Low works that much better. This is what makes guys like Kane and Smart a pain in my ass.

3). I agree with all the points on finding our own Heslip or Forte. CF should be that guy. And throw in Greene and White too if they had any confidence. Someone said it above, guys are too scared to let if fly early in the shot clock because they're afraid of the quick yank. I don't know if Self truly does put this into the mind of the guys (it appears that way at times) but if CF, BG, and others feel this way Self needs to change that mind set. Giving up a great open look early on to guys that we're told are deadly from 3 just because we want to run the O is moronic. And if he's going to implement his quick yank then that standard should have been upheld with Tharpe and Johnson the past two years!

4). With the talent and athletes riding the pine every game it would have been nice to see us press more yesterday (and throughout the year). This would have given more guys a chance to play and build some of the much needed confidence CF, BG, AW3 lack. I know their d is suspect at best but the only way to get better sometimes is to be thrown to the fire. And honestly I'd take a few more L's during the season to have the depth and confidence that a team like Michigan State has. Granted their reason for having to play guys that probably wouldn't have played all that much this year was due to injuries you can't argue that they're not a MUCH better team for it and why they're considered a favorite to win it all at a 4 seed.

The author of that blog is/was a CU Buffs beat writer so take it for what it's worth. Which is toilet paper at best.

Maybe this has been said before and I missed it but maybe Fran should refrain from calling games in which he carries a bias in. I wondered last night if he was wearing a #13 jersey while calling the game.

The flop Smart tried to sell when Kane was backing down should have warranted him a technical because it was that obvious. Glad Kane, who is an admitted flopper, had the knowledge to run Smart's ass over while he was getting back up from his terrible flop.

McDermott VS Embiid VS Wiggins β€’ Jan 24, 2014 05:38 PM

@icthawkfan316 : I know there are two camps on Craft. And I'm in the one that thinks he's a really good college player. The games OSU lost they shot horribly (from either 3 range or 2 range). I tried watching the Nebraska game (the L one) but it was painfully bad. The reason I like Craft was the reason we all like K.Young. He makes play that don't show up on the stat sheet. Last night he made several hustle plays and swiped the ball when an Illini was going to the basket that weren't steals because they went out on the Illini player. (note: the Illini player he swiped wasn't the guy he was guarding. He happened to sag down and help on d) I really liked your picks. I too like Appling. He's a senior on a really good team and I took two of his teammates. But really, if I'm being honest with myself I'd have probably taken Smart. But I'm stubborn and couldn't and still won't. ;)

January 24: News Headlines Digest β€’ Jan 24, 2014 03:01 PM

A player must receive a written permission-to-contact letter from his current coach. He must have spent a full year in "academic residence" -- i.e., attending classes as a full-time, 12-credit-hours-or-insert-your-school's-equivalency student -- before he is eligible to get back on the court at his new school.

All you need to know about transfer is right here.

McDermott VS Embiid VS Wiggins β€’ Jan 24, 2014 02:26 PM

@icthawkfan316 : Glad to see you posting here.

So I consider myself lucky because I get to watch a lot of college ball because my wife likes to watch too. Here's my picks:

It's hard for me to go away from Aaron Craft : 6'2", 195#, PG. I know he's not putting up huge points but he's a gamer. Watched Ohio State last night and he makes great basketball decisions on both ends of the court. He has really quick hands and goes for the ball when someone drives on him and a lot of the time he succeeds in knocking it away. Averages 4.9 assists, 9.3 points, and 2.3 steals per games. A/TO is 2/1.

Now here's a tough one. Do I go with a true SG in Gary Harris Jr. : 6'4", 210# that's averaging 18.4 points and 2.1 steals per game? Harris's three % is down this year at 33.3% (last year 41%) but his FT% is at 83.8% and I really like the way he plays. Or do I go with Tyler Ennis : 6'2", 180# who's a smaller combo'ish guy (probably 1>2) from the 'cuse averaging 5.5 A, 2.7 steals, just 1.3 TOs, and 11.9 points per game? Ennis probably pads his steals numbers just because of their zone but I like the 2.7 disruption. Craft and either of these two would be like having RussRob and Mario back. I guess I'll go with the better shooter and take Harris. Someone needs to score points right? Or is this team playing in the old Big10 of 40 point games??

The best SFs this year are all F and So. It's a toss up between Wiggins and Parker here. Wiggins is the better all around player. Parker is the better offensive player. If Wiggins can and does start to create his own shot (and we've seen glimpses) then he'd be the obvious pick. Parker is disadvantage because of Dukes lack of a bigs he's playing the 4. I'll stay with my all D team, be a homer, and take Wiggins for my SF.

I know he's hurt right now but I'm a big fan of Adreian Payne : 6'10", 245#, PF. Like McDermott he can score in the paint and can step out and hit the three. He's averaging 16.2 points, 7.7 rebs per game. Shooting 43% from 3 and 52% from 2. Doug's numbers are a little better points wise but I wanted a prototypical 4. Doug's more of a 3/4.

There's not a better true big in the NCAA than Joel : 7'0", 250#, C. kensucky fans will argue that wcs is better but I've watched him play and he's really not. wcs had better games against weaker teams early in the season when Joel was coming off the bench. Now Joel is starting, getting more minutes, and has increased his stats against better competition.

So it's a 2 KU, 2 MSU, and Ohio State team. I really spiced it up there huh??

@drgnslayr : Did anyone else watch the uk and Tenn game this past weekend?? Andrew Harrison's flop and flail was priceless. Maymon's elbows didn't even get in the same area code as Andy's chin! And J. Randy was in the background clapping like a fool after the performance. Now I wish the NCAA would Flagrant 3 these bad actors. (My imaginary F3 is ejected and sit the next game.)
