NCAA loses more power... again... • Jun 22, 2021 05:53 PM

@mayjay I am saying that is is a slippery slope, that's all.

@benshawks08 said in NCAA loses more power... again...:

@Marco The eventual goal seems to me that anyone could get paid as much as they can. If someone thinks a cheerleader is a valuable asset to the university, pay them accordingly. Doesn’t seem to me the goal is to guarantee money for every student athlete but instead to allow them to earn freely just like the rest of the student body.

The only way I see this negatively impacting college sports is that it could simply perpetuate the “rich get richer” idea as far as competition. Kansas and duke and Kentucky will all still be competitive because basketball makes enough money at those schools to be able to attract players with money. On the other hand I’m basketball, one player can make such a huge difference if schools with less marketable brands focused on one or two players they could still make a splash.

I do worry our football team is doomed.

I respect your opinion. And you are correct in your assessment, our football team is burnt toast.

NCAA loses more power... again... • Jun 22, 2021 04:15 PM

@approxinfinity after they already got two degrees, yes. But they didn't get that cash by just showing up and studying after being recruited by the school - and brilliant students are recruited by universities.

NCAA loses more power... again... • Jun 22, 2021 03:42 PM

@approxinfinity while going to school?

NCAA loses more power... again... • Jun 22, 2021 03:25 PM

@drgnslayr Right? Who gets paid, and if so how much? How much do gymnasts get paid? What about cheerleaders or baseball players? I am not in support of the Court's decision. What, going to pay high schoolers next? What the ruling will cause due to opening the NCAA and or even universities up to lawsuits is complete chaos. It will sooner rather than later hurt not only the true student-athlete - and there are alot of them - but also and eventually the entire system while perhaps ending it altogether. What about physics students who are studying to help advance the world and universe through science? How much should they be paid while going to school? What about the guy or girl who dresses as the mascot on gamedays?

Bingo! We totally got into OUs heads at halftime. They were over-inflated from Tubbs and his jackass ego.

What a game, one of the all-time greats. I think that people do give the game its historical respect and context though. I still have the SI issue bubble wrapped, the caption reading, Oh, Danny Boy!

Good post! I can see your logic.

Back in the 80s I lived in Dallas. I still am an outside contractor for UT-Austin. Texas people just think different from the rest of the USA... It's the old "everything is bigger and better in Texas!" I embrace their positive feelings about Texas, and for the most part their attitudes are what gives Texas more charm and magic to be bigger and better. But this goes into everything... especially in sports. Bragging rights are crucial in Texas and if you aren't winning, they will turn their backs because they expect excellence. In some ways, I think this hurts them in sports often, definitely with support for basketball.

I hear you, I lived in Texas for a time and liked both it and the people. In many ways, they still think themselves to be a Republic - and I'm not knocking it, just saying. But OU has absolutely owned Texas in football for years now. I guess what I'm saying is, they only think that they are a football school.

Around the Big 12 • Jun 20, 2021 08:02 PM

@jayballer67. Oh, they are coming, make no mistake. Hell, Texas has been getting their ass kicked by OU in football for how many years now? And it's not going to get any easier for them this year. Oklahoma is going to be an absolute animal, even on D year 3 under The Grinch. Given the losses at Alabama (including Sarkisian) and Clemson OU will probably be the favorite to win it all this year.

Pathetic. Always pass the buck...

Around the Big 12 • Jun 19, 2021 11:30 PM

@jayballer67 rightl, I agree.... Drew Timme. Gee, wonder if that guy can ball? Clemence and KJ Adams will too, but thankfully we snagged those two. When I hear people say that Texas is all but devoid of high school talent, I almost want to scream. Jalen Wilson isn't too shabby either.

Hell even Kansas, which is a hell of alot less populated has bball talent - Braun, Dick, Mitchell, Berry and I've forgotten more than a few.

Around the Big 12 • Jun 18, 2021 11:19 PM

@approxinfinity Moser can coach. You don't do what he did at Loyala not once but twice, without being able to. Oklahoma and Texas (Baylor aleady is) are going to be major defensive pains in the ass. I hope our NCAA woes are behind us soon, because our ass already has enough to worry about.

Coach K to retire after 21-22 season • Jun 18, 2021 11:11 PM

@mayjay Chalmers made "the shot" but Collins won the game... Once it went to O.T. you could tell by the Memphis faces, they didn't went any.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Jun 18, 2021 02:49 PM

@jayballer67 no, he won't get them all, too many. But look at what Sampson has done at Houston.

Coach K to retire after 21-22 season • Jun 18, 2021 02:42 PM

@approxinfinity the depth on that team, no doubt!

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Jun 17, 2021 11:55 PM

@jayballer67 No doubt, a football school. But he'll have them in the tournament this year, and he'll all but own Texas high school basketball talent, which is another reason why he poached Snacks who has been recruiting Texas pretty well. And unlike some, I realize that Texas does have players. Is it Cali, New York, Illinois or Florida? No, but there is talent there. And he'll get out of state talent too. Look at what he did at Texas Tech.

Davis is not Roy, and Scheyer not K. We will once the scandal is gone (and we already have been, really) soon be loading up.

Coach K to retire after 21-22 season • Jun 17, 2021 05:28 PM

@mayjay said in Coach K to retire after 21-22 season:

I reslly don't think Collins (couldn't control his weight, blew off a tryout; who does that?) or Selby (9 game suspension by NCAA, late injury) whiffing can be attributed to KU.

As to wings, KU's alums trying to go pro are also competing not only with college players but with the huge numbers of foreign players. With only 2 rounds in the draft and huge contracts limiting free agent undrafted opportunities, there aren't a lot of chances for the merely really good to break through.

Seems like everyone between 6'3" and 6'9" wants to play wing anyway, all of them seeing themselves as 3-pt assassins and swoopers to the rim. Few players at 6'8" will bulk up anymore to play like Kurt Rambis did--they stay lean like Svi and sport nice stats. But wouldn't it have been nice to see more of these guys really crash the boards to seize rebounds rather than just being opportunistic? My pet peeve: even in the NBA, the wings stay outside to admire their shots.

Just a random bitching session...carry on!

I thought Collins could make it in the NBA. He would often get lost, driving inside with nowhere to go with the ball, but I thought that - despite his size - he'd have a spot somewhere. Regardless, that guy is one of my all-time favorite Jayhawks.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Jun 17, 2021 05:21 PM

@jayballer67 that Beard is going to make them a national force, maybe not this year but soon, there is no doubt. That dude can flat out coach.

NBA Draft Entrants • Jun 17, 2021 05:16 PM

@approxinfinity I agree with what you say, on all accounts. That he can handle the ball, no doubt - he just isn't a PG - and that ball handling ability will help his draft stock, ditto him being a lockdown defender. If he develops the ability to consistently make while not being afraid to fire more from distance? Look out.

NBA Draft Entrants • Jun 16, 2021 02:40 PM

@justanotherfan yep. Wouldn't take Drew over Self, obviously. But to say that he and his staff don't do a solid job and that he can't coach is not even close to being right.

2023 Recruiting • Jun 13, 2021 04:01 PM

@jayballer67 good thar campus visits are starting again.

If he is able to develop some contacts and recruit well, I am all in on Jeremy Case getting the job full-time.

Yep... and now I forgot the other guy's name... big man from Chicago. He zero'd out for us, too.

With NIL the Cliff situation would’ve been above board most likely, unless they do some weird restriction to only group licensing. And I’ll be honest that whole cycle was unbelievably dirty at the top holy crap. The Jones/Okafor/Cliff love triangle was WILD.

You know, honest question here. I really thought that Alexander was going to be a star, and so did everyone else. And it's not like be played against non-competition in Chicago. What, just a bad dude or what? And what happened to him?

@FarmerJayhawk Do you know if KU is planning on full capacity for basketball games this upcoming season or will it still be reduced capacity?

If it's full capacity, I'm making every effort to fly up for the Missouri game for my birthday weekend.

I hope it is. We can't curl up into a ball and hide anymore. I think that places need to have people show vaccination cards, that way we can all get on with our lives.

New Walk-on • Jun 08, 2021 05:42 PM

@FarmerJayhawk also, notice that both walk-ons are from Cali.

2022 Recruiting Thread • Jun 07, 2021 08:06 PM

At this point, I really don't even care. The timeline to decide should never have been adjusted. But justs for shits and giggles, I say Wilson back Agbaji gone.

@BShark the old puppet? Jesus Christ, he can hoop? I guess he never went to college, huh?

@Texas-Hawk-10 Sure it will.

@BShark how many wins does Villanova have?

@Texas-Hawk-10 I didn't say that we'd get them all - we don't have that many scholarships.

@nwhawkfan I didn't say anyone was going away, said that Roy already has and that K soon will be and maybe even Calipari. Now, if you don't think that that translates into our - the NCAA bullshit will soon be gone - being able to sign some recruits then you are all seriously high.

@BShark Nope. We are Kansas, not Alabama or Villanova or Michigan.

I called it, Roy already gone and K after next season. Calimari if he has another season or two like the last one might soon be gone as well. Gee, I don't know, think that our recruiting - regardless of circumstance - might soon be on the upswing? 😏

NBA Draft Entrants • May 30, 2021 10:50 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 someone will be getting themselves a steal. Is it just me (some have said that he is a bad coach, I disagree) or does Drew and his staff do a good job at recruiting, developing and keeping talent? Some say, "but they were highly regarded players already." Really? How many Top 10 or even 20 national recruiting classes has Baylor had? And they just won a national championship.

@Texas-Hawk-10 said in Welcome Sydney Curry!:

Bummed Curry was forced out because I was excited to see where he would've been in 3 years here. His athleticism isn't something that can be taught and I was excited to see his progression and refinement to eventually replace McCormack after he left.

If this is because of Ochai coming back though, Self may legitimately end up going 10 deep this year. Who ends up getting bumped from the starting line up? Yesufu, JCL, or Wilson?

Ochai's return also probably means Pettiford is now a redshirt candidate as well along with Adams and Cuffe.

He'll be at South Carolina or Indiana now I imagine.

Jalen Coleman-Lands • May 29, 2021 04:35 AM

@BShark said in Jalen Coleman-Lands:

@justanotherfan Yep. There is going to be even less loyalty both ways now going forward with the new rules. I know of a couple coaches that will for sure be going harder at transfers than HS recruits because they don't want to wait for them to develop.

Which is why I said that the new rules might actually benefit mid-majors --more hs talent available. A player graduates, and a KU or UK just plugs in another with the same or better skillset.

Jalen Coleman-Lands • May 29, 2021 04:31 AM

@approxinfinity. He's a shoot the 3 and D guy

2021 Transfer Talk/List • May 28, 2021 04:42 PM

@BShark He is important, not discounting that. Looking at the makeup of our team, I would say that we are definitely going to have to focus on boxing out and rebounding.

Kevin Samuel from TCU in the portal. If a spot comes open, would take.

That would help our back-up 5 spot tremendously.

That said, I believe the roster is just about set based on what I've been hearing. Like I mentioned in another thread I would expect some small ball.

Boom ... I expect alot of small ball too. That being said then, how many minutes do you think Dave will get?

Welcome Sydney Curry! • May 28, 2021 04:26 PM

@BShark I saw some footage of the guy being able to dribble drive to the basket and finish hard, that's what I meant by having some handles - was not implying that he could be a wing or guard. I never said he was going up against great competition either. But that does kind of prove my point though, it being that he will land in a D1 program and contribute. At any rate, the ship that is Curry will not be sailing in Allen. So, how many scholarships do we have left? Hard to keep track or count. Agree with you on the jucos, thought that Tyon would be a baller, but that didn't happen. Larry Johnsons aren't around anymore.

2021 Recruiting • May 27, 2021 05:59 PM

Okay, so much for Curry. Now,,, what is the frontcourt, how many minutes?

Welcome Sydney Curry! • May 27, 2021 05:55 PM

@KirkIsMyHinrich I don't see it. They will not redshirt. Clemence and Adams are going to play, as will Cam. Should Curry redshirt? Probably, but he won't. When Dave leaves after this coming season, things will open up. Perfect world? Dave gets (which is his best amount) about 15 mpg and rotate fresh bodies in. It is going to be a guard centric and or bigs shooting ftom the outside offense. Alot of people have given me flack, but look at the bigs that coach is recruiting - they can shoot from the outside.
