Not expecting any KU players to enter the portal. As of right now, no one is in. Crazy.

This is kind of shocking. At one point, what, there was thought of at least three with a foot in the portal door???

Up to 4.

Winning cures all I guess. Though 2 were a case of people thought Bill would boot them. Very interesting.

This probably means the attrition will be through the draft.

JCL, Cam Martin, Mitch, and Remy were all listed as super seniors, so they are all gone. Big Dave and Och are also gone.

We know that MJ Rice, Gradey Dick, Zuby Ejifor, and Ernest Udeh are all coming. Ejifor and Udeh replace Dave and Mitch. Rice replaces JCL's roster spot. Dick replaces Remy's roster spot.

So there are two roster spots open at a minimum, but I'm guessing KU fills three because Braun is probably gone, too.

If we assume that means Wilson is back, our rotation next year is:

Starters: Harris, Dick, Rice, Wilson, Transfer A

Reserves: Ejifor, Udeh, Clemence, Pettiford, Yesufu, Adams, Transfer B.

I don't know where Kyle Cuffe fits into all of this. Honestly, he is the guy that I can't really figure out. He's a very bouncy athlete, but with him redshirting last year, its hard to gauge how the coaching staff feels about him. He can play. But how does he find minutes with Harris, Pettiford, Rice, Dick, Yesufu all playing guard/wing minutes. That's five guys splitting up 120 minutes already, and we know Self loves both Harris and Pettiford, so 50 of those minutes are already gone.

KU could get by without any transfers, honestly, if Wilson returns. Even without Wilson, they probably don't have to fill that other slot with a big time guy. But they probably do look for another guy either way.

Cam isn't gone.

Who informed the staff they were returning? Is this a Cuffe reference or a JW reference?

We definitely had someone go from Scholarship player to "Walk-On" before. Keith Langford helped out his cousin Justin Wesley by paying his tuition. Wesley went from scholarship player to walk-on and it freed up a scholarship we needed. It was only allowable by NCAA at that time because it was family.

But now, if a kid really wants to stay at KU if he thinks it is best for him for development/exposure/whatever, and coaches are agreeable to allow him to be a walk-on, why couldn't he do a bunch of jersey signings, commercials, whatever needed to earn money to pay his tuition out of pocket? I don't see how this is against any NCAA violation but i'm not an expert on that stuff.

Next Year's Team Thread • May 02, 2022 11:50 AM

So with all of this NIL money playing a factor, could we potentially see some players not take the "scholarship money" and open up that 13 cap a little bit to where someone like Cuffe could stay and develop if he really wants to and not get booted out. We've had it in the past where someone that is well off can pay their own way and allows someone else to take the scholarship. Just an outside the box thought as to how everyone that wants to be back can still come back.

Portal experience is great but history has shown that it still takes the transfers some time to adapt into the KU/Self system. Think things could be a bit bumpy early season next year as guys are gaining on-the-job experience in games. Not something we are used to seeing here.

It gives the ability to filter and shows interesting information like "NIL Value" and stuff like that. It says Emoni Bates just entered however your site doesn't say that. Maybe its showing when it posted? I don't know.

What's our fate? • Apr 11, 2022 11:31 AM

I think it should be option 2 but will be the first to admit I am not super knowledgeable about the matter. Its my understanding that an adidas booster was involved with some shady business with the Billy Preston camp. I think a fair punishment should be that KU has to vacate all games that BP played in. Its too bad KU didn't get suspicious about a new car, etc., and voluntarily hold him out until things were explained. Oh wait - they did! BP didn't play a second for KU in any regular season action. I just don't think people who discuss it all factor that part of it into the equation.

Second, I recall something about Silvio getting like $2,500. And wasn't he not at all aware of it? Like it was his "handler" that orchestrated the whole thing. AND, that money was given to him to steer him to MARYLAND! Silvio messes up the whole deal by visiting KU and deciding this is the place he wants to go based purely off of his decision, no steering or money influence (because he is not aware that it happened). Now the Maryland camp needs to be paid back because Silvio isn't going there and the KU/Adidas rep makes them whole. The money that was spent by Silvio's handler was given to him by the Maryland camp, not KU. The money given to them from the KU/Adidas rep went back to Maryland's guys, to pay them back. Note, Maryland is not being discussed as making any violations which I think is a joke. Silvio should have had to sit out several games over this $2,500 issue. Oh wait, KU already did this for many many games due to eligibility issues. Silvio was punished enough to cover $2,500 worth of games in my opinion but i'm sure i'm biased and the rest of the world sees it differently.

KU was probably more aware and involved (like every single other big program out there is) than I stated above but think they dodged some big bullets by sitting BP and SD when they could have played them like some of the other schools elected to do with their questionable guys. I just hope that stuff is considered.

When Remy makes it back... • Feb 23, 2022 06:16 PM

I've seen Joe sky for some rebounds lately, i mean he jumps out the roof for them. Love it. He also sprints down the floor with the ball and tries for the easy bucket. Things I love and believe make a huge difference. I'm crossing my fingers some of these behaviors become contagious.

Tejas Game Thread • Feb 09, 2022 12:40 PM

This is a tough team to watch. Its amazing how they have the record they do this year, I think its way better than they actually are. I really have a hard time watching Harris out there, its like KU is playing 4 vs 5. Minimal threat to score, doesn't create for teammates... why is he even playing? Yesufu is way better. Creates better, drives better, more steals, faster, etc. His shot looks way better than Juan's too, not sure its fair to compare shooting percentage without Yesufu being able to get comfortable with his role.

Its also very tough to watch our big guys play, especially Dave. I don't understand how someone his size can be so bad at rebounding and so weak handed with the ball. Never seen someone that gets as many minutes as he does develop less over the course of four years. I'd bet money he holds the KU record for most offensive fouls, still hasn't learned how to cut back on those. Still jumping and missing on so many block attempts and when he does get one its always swatted hard directly out of bounds.

On a positive note, it did seem like they were driving to the basket more which was something else I was banging the drum about. It looks to me like KU will probably be a 3 or a 4 seed and has a high risk of being a first weekend upset in the tourny.

Yesufu and Remy • Feb 03, 2022 12:39 PM

Its obvious to me and has been obvious for a while that Harris should have minutes cut significantly. We can start whoever, its total minutes that matter, but we need players in there that can attack the opponent and can score. Then again, even if we have the right players on the floor, we need the coaching to allow the players to play in attack mode by driving the lane and to play fast in transition.

Talent Wins Games • Jan 31, 2022 01:04 PM

The way I see it, there's two sides to this sword. On one side, the talent on the roster and the coaching keeps most games close and their talent is enough to win the close games against most opponents.

However on the other side of things I see a team that lacks elite talent, lacks scoring, lacks the attack mentality, relies too heavily on one or two players, is content to take the easy path and shoot long jumpshots all game. Some of the best KU teams I remember always had that attack mentality and/or were high tempo runners. Harris to me is hurting this team because he is no threat to score and you really don't need to defend him all that well. He should do one thing during the offseason, its watch film of Collins, Mason, & Dotson, the three best players I can recall that could drive the lane and score at the hoop. If he could learn to be great at that one thing, this team might become a title contender. Pettiford is better than Harris at this right now which is why I think he should be the one playing. Driving the lane and attacking leads to more easy buckets, more fouls/foul shots, possible foul trouble for the other team, kickouts for open threes, etc. Instead we are coached to run the weave, to pass first, not attack. Can anyone recall a game recently where our opponent was put into foul trouble because of our attacking?

The other option is to run run run. Think back to the Kevin Young teams. I swear, the opponent would make a basket and we'd inbound the ball so fast and beat them back down the court for a layup. I remember ally-oops from almost half court. Thats how you play freely and use athletes to your advantage. Having this approach is another way of attacking and puts pressure on the opponent to get back on defense fast rather than crashing the offensive boards with 3-4 players like we're seeing now. Just watch, every time the opponent makes a hoop the ball just bounces around for a few seconds, someone walks over to pick it up, sometimes they wait for the opponent to setup a soft press, then they inbound it. The team is missing an attack identity that I think is necessary to really win the title. This is where i think coaching has some responsibility.

@Oldmanhawk Sorry for your losses. What I think I'm trying to say is I don't see how one can have a varying opinion about a very contagious virus. It makes zero sense to me. Seriously. That's what I'm trying to say. While there's not clear evidence of this I have zero doubts its true. Americans have died because someone asserted their 'right' not to wear a mask. When opinions lead to deaths or debilitating illnesses then I question that this is a matter of opinion.

Using this logic, lets draw some other conclusions:

  • Opinion: its our right to not be forced to wear a mask. Data: Tens of thousands die from the flu every year. Assuming masks work, we should never be without a mask even after covid since someone might transmit the yearly flu to someone else that might die. Conclusion: ban our right from being maskless ever again.

  • Opinion: automobiles are a great way to transport people. Data: Thousands of people die every year from car accidents that aren't their fault. Conclusion: ban our right to drive cars.

  • Opinion: its our right to own guns. Data: people die every year from being shot. Conclusion: ban guns.

  • Opinion: Knives are useful in all kitchens. Data: People die every year from knife injuries from someone else. Conclusion: ban knives.

  • Opinion: Responsibly using fire for cooking, warmth, etc in our homes is great. Data: People die every year from fires started by someone else. Conclusion: ban fire.

@Kcmatt7

"The vaccine is safe." How do you know? You don't know that for certain because nobody does. If its so safe, why do the manufacturers need immunity? Are we just supposed to take the word of the people that first blamed the origins of this on a bat, then a snake, then a pangolin, but vehemently dismissed anyone questioning whether it came from the Coronavirus Gain of Function research lab 2 blocks from the wet market? 6,000+ people have died in the US directly after getting the shot based on data reported to VAERS thus far, not counting the tens of thousands of adverse effects.

"The vaccine is effective AF" So what are you so worried about if others choose not to take it? It shouldn't impact you at all. Sure, government is making it impact you but its not the non-vaxers fault, blame government. No matter how many get the shot, they will move the goalpost even farther. Remember "two weeks to stop the spread"? It will never end.

This pandemic has been a jackpot for so many people, there are 40 new Billionaires in 2020 alone directly resulting from COVID! I'm sure the DC lobbyists aren't using any of this money to buy government influence. :face_with_rolling_eyes:

I believe very strongly that someone can protect themselves if they choose to.

Bullshit. You must be ignoring the many stories of people who did everything they could and caught it anyway, most of whom died (which is why these stories made the news).

Also, you refer to anyone doing everything they can to protect themselves as cowering in fear. Your freedom to do what you want stops at the point where what you are doing endangers others. Smoking is a great example. Have you managed to miss how it is being regulated to save other people from exposure?

You left out gun-related deaths. I assume you think that everyone's freedom includes playing with guns in public, taking them into any place of business (your covid aerosols are basically bullets), and just letting anyone scared of guns cower in fear.

Do you tell flu patients to just go out as soon as they are feeling okay, and anyone scared of the flu just has to deal with it? As a doctor, your attitude toward public health is one reason we will be in this mess for way too long.

This type of response is completely uncalled for and the admins should step in. Nobody should be attacked like this for sharing their opinion. The reason why people don't speak up is because one side of this discussion is not able to have a civil conversation and respect the other side. A non doctor preaching to a doctor about their holier than thou medical opinions, amazing.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • May 21, 2021 04:07 PM

Its simple, Pettiford > Harris. This doesn't feel like HCBS initiating it though, more likely Harris approached him about it and had a talk about the future. I'm sure the official stance is that there will be a competition for the playing time, etc., but based on the game footage I've seen, I'm very convinced that Pettiford is the future starting PG for KU. After these last few signings it may not be next year but he won't be redshirted, he'll get a lot of run to get him ready to take the keys the year after.

I hear you. But to be fair, playing Garrett isn't the reason we didn't have scoring. There wasn't another option on the roster. This year's team was missing a lot of pieces. Its just hard to keep up when you see the rest of the team getting knocked for their (lack of) defense - i.e. Wilson, but are also presumably happy to see a defensive player of the year caliber starter move on.

I am going to say it everyone, so go ahead and crucify me. I - and I respect him as a player - don't want Marcus to return. Don't think it would be beneficial for him or the team.

Why? I get it that he wasn't very prolific this year but I think its a bit unfair to use this year as the measuring stick. It was just overall a bad team that didn't gel well and had very little top end talent. Marcus was great the year before when DD was running point. We were #1 in the country and odds on favorite to win it all. I would absolutely take that guard setup again if we can get a Dotson-esk PG back in the fold and a more experienced Marcus back in the role as the 2. What am i missing?

I'm predicting starters next year are:
Pettiford
Agbaji
Thompson
Wilson
McCormack

I hope Jalen is in the long term plans, don't have to be an above the rim player to be effective, ahem Perry ahem. He had some games early on where he looked like he could be a one and done. He still has a lot of eligibility left and plenty of room to continue to develop.

I can't imagine how we could ever survive without government working on these critical issues that plague our society.

And there's why this thing isn't going away. If you don't care about people 3 degrees removed from you, than you don't care about people in general and that may be fine for you but to me it's the biggest problem in our culture today. To think that people 3 degrees removed have no bearing on your life, well-being and livelihood is just ignorant.

There need to be services and support for those struggling financially amid a shut down but just letting things go as they are now is just unacceptable. Over 2000 people died from COVID yesterday in the U.S. I guess that's fine for you as long as you didn't know any of them.

Wow dude, WTF is the matter with you @benshawks08 ? How the hell do you draw these conclusions from my post? This is extremely insulting and should be deleted. I came nowhere near saying i don't care about people or people dying is fine with me. That's completely asinine to suggest that. Maybe the biggest problems with our culture today is that we have teachers that either can't read or willingly put ridiculous words in people's mouths that were never said or implied.

@benshawks08 if acting in the best interests of my family over the interests of someone three degrees removed from me makes me selfish, call me selfish all day long i don't care. My family wears our masks, takes germ spreading seriously, and try our best not to get ourselves or anyone else sick. They are my priority and always will be no matter what names people want to call me.

The ironic thing about this all is you are using your perspective as a teacher to diminish other people's views and don't even realize it. Its the same thing you called me selfish for. As a teacher, you are measuring the importance of school vs a bar or school vs a gym and saying school is unquestionably more important to "everyone." Tell that to the families of the owners of the bar and gym that government has mandated must close their doors because their business isn't important. Sorry sir, this business you worked your a$$ off to build, that provides income to feed and shelter your family, must close for an indeterminate amount of time because someone who comes here could possibly pickup the virus and then spread it to someone else who spreads it to someone else who spreads it to someone else that dies from it.

It goes beyond gyms and bars but you chose those examples to make your argument appear to be a simple choice. The small mom and pop retail stores that could be three generations of life savings put into the business are told they aren't essential and must close until government says so. But their main competition - Target across the street is considered essential and can remain open. I could go buy a tennis racket at Dick's Sporting Goods but can't get a haircut. Apparently its considered acceptable risk if someone gets the virus from a Target store and spreads it to others but not if they get it from a gym and it spreads to others.

Its a tough situation and there isn't a good answer that works well for everyone. Hopefully this vaccine is ready soon and things can get back to normal. This virus already stole a championship from our Hawks, hopefully it doesn't take more games away from us. I mean, seeing them beat up on Kentucky sounds pretty essential to me! :)

Good morning Bucketeers, thanks for not beating me up too bad. I've been following this site for a loooong time and its part of my daily ritual to check in and read about our beloved Jayhawks. Even though the responses have been mostly civil i really don't enjoy having any disagreements with posters on here that have become some of my favorites to read each day.

At the end of the day, this whole C-19 debate comes down to each individual's perspective and whats most important to their family. Mine is from a middle ageish person with young kids and a family circle focused in the medical field. While i could continue the back and forth about why coronaviruses are a classification of viruses considered one of the causes of the common cold, its not worth going down this hole. I hold a lot of people on this site in high regard and don't want my perspective on the issue to be taken as though I am diminishing the significance of the pandemic.

There is always a second side of the coin. Lockdowns save lives (C19; flu; fewer car accidents) but also destroy lives (Jobs; Businesses Lost; Stunted Education, Divorces; Drugs). America being the land of the free has always let you choose what side of the coin you want to be on until recently. NFL and MLB let the players decide, several decided to opt out and keep themselves away from greater exposure potential. That was their choice and nobody should fault them for it. But now government decides for you which can be a slippery slope. You may like what side the government chose for you this time but you might not like it the next time. Once we relinquish our decision making power its tough to get it back. I mean, haven't we all seen what happened with Skynet in The Terminator?

Can't taste or smell? Oh the humanity! The obvious answer is that government must step in and shut down all schools and stunt our kids' growth, force people to lose their businesses/livelihoods/jobs by closing restaurants, businesses, etc. that they have worked their lives to build because some people temporarily can't taste their coffee. I hope that comes off as insensitive to many of you because its meant to be a bit of a wake up call. This is a politically exaggerated virus and a lot of people have fallen into the trap. Of course there are very real concerns about people's heath that need to be taken seriously (the elderly, high risk people) just like every year with the flu, and i genuinely hope anyone that is struggling with the virus fully recovers. However i just don't think the rest of the world should be forced to grind to a halt over such a small percent of people that have serious issues.

Our family circle has had about a dozen people we know get C19, most had mild to no symptoms. Others said it was worse than a common cold but not as bad as the flu. Another actually had C19 and the flu at the same time and just said it was a little rough, a few days of bad headaches, but was back to work in a few weeks. On the other hand, i have a friend that owns a very popular daycare franchise, multiple locations, that has gone from very successful and thinking about early retirement to now be on the verge of bankruptcy. I've spoken to owners of many local businesses we love that say if round 2 of shutdowns was to hit our state (which it appears to be happening) that they definitely won't survive.

Ironically, allergies force me to lose my taste and smell every year. I guess it never occurred to me to just stay inside my house, stop living my life, and hide until allergy season is over because of the horror of losing my taste and smell. No offense to anyone but if the worst thing you have is temporarily losing your taste and smell, you're doing pretty good. Enjoy your life and don't let minor setbacks stop you from doing it.

Its a good time to come back Jaybate so i can maybe get at least one upvote!

@DanR yeah, forcing people to give up the core fundamental for why this country was founded because of a cold that 99% of people recover from is such a brilliant idea. All those covid free dictatorships out there are such a shining beacon of hope for what we should aspire to be.
