@Texas-Hawk-10 Here's what bugs me about what you said. You said Andre Ware agreed with you, therefore I'm wrong because I'm obviously not as knowledgable as Andrew Ware. THE REFEREES WATCHED IT TOO AND SAID IT WAS TARGETING. I could say the same thing to you. You know more than the referees? I doubt it.

I'm not saying I know than the refs, but I am saying that they do screw calls regularly even with replay, like they just did with the Hishaw first down.

Pregaming Illinois • Sep 09, 2023 02:43 AM

@kjayhawks said in Pregaming Illinois:

@Texas-Hawk-10 it was targeting because he dropped his head which you just admitted so are we arguing about lol

His entire body dropped, not just the head. Lowering your head in this context of targeting means that a player only lowers his head, not his entire body.

@kjayhawks said in Pregaming Illinois:

@Texas-Hawk-10 he definitely ducks his head to me. Accountability has to start for the stripes at some point.

You see how much I'm defending the Booker play so I'm not blindly siding with the refs, but that Bryant call was a good call amd the right call. His head dropped because he sunk his hips to try a juke.

@wissox said in Pregaming Illinois:

He didn't make the end zone on that 2 point did he?

Fell on the goal line. Only the tip of the ball only has to reach to very front of the goal to break the plane.

@kjayhawks said in Pregaming Illinois:

So what is a defense player supposed to do when the offensive player ducks? This ain’t football

The receiver didn't duck or lower his head, this was a legit call unlike the Booker call.

@DanR I don't think he was trying to hurt him. Obviously don't agree with what ya'll saying, but it's ok, we're kicking tail here and the call doesn't matter.

I'm also going to trust the judgment of Andre Ware because he was a QB and I hear him weekly calling Texans games on the radio and is a very pro QB announcer since he was a Heisman winning QB.

If Booker led with crown, you'd be able to see both logos from the back view.

The call does matter because KU lost their best pass rusher when Illinois is going to be doing a lot of passing the rest of the game.

@Texas-Hawk-10 You didn't answer me. How could you see that? I just went back slowed it down frame by frame and don't see how you can say that.

You can't see the left Jayhawk logo when Booker hit because that's what hit the QB. If he led with the crown, you'd be able to see both logos from the backside view. That was a clean hit.

@wissox said in Pregaming Illinois:

@Texas-Hawk-10 Where was his head turned? Which side because I wasn't shown a replay that showed he turned it. I just saw him drive his helmet right into his midsection.

Left side of Booker's helmet is what made contact woth Altmeyer's ribs, not the crown.

Pregaming Illinois • Sep 09, 2023 02:11 AM

@wissox said in Pregaming Illinois:

He drove his helmet right into him @Texas-Hawk-10. I know we see things with Jayhawks slant, but I really don't know how it can be argued we got screwed on that play. Sounds like I'm against you tonight! Black uni's no! Targeting, good call!

That targeting was a bad call. Booker executed a perfect form tackle. Booker had his head turned and hit with his shoulder and side of his head. That hit is literally how we teach kids to tackle in middle school.

Pregaming Illinois • Sep 09, 2023 02:10 AM

I also don't understand the purpose of going for two here. It's still a 3 possession game.

Pregaming Illinois • Sep 09, 2023 02:07 AM

At least Nevada is a crappy team and Booker missing the 1st half shouldn't be a big issue.

Bullshit!!

Pregaming Illinois • Sep 09, 2023 02:03 AM

Pregaming Illinois • Sep 09, 2023 01:50 AM

Pregaming Illinois • Sep 09, 2023 12:18 AM

Very impressive first quarter so far, especially the defense and how much they've been in the backfield tonight. This is a good Illinois team, maybe not as good as the Duke team KU played last year, but Illinois should make a bowl this year.

@jayballer67 If Jason Bean plays a lot of snaps, I sure hope he's learned from the Missouri St game not to throw into good coverage; that tendency will eventually be costly, especially against a good defense like Illinois.

Bean has thrown into coverage for years, he's not learning and decisions like that are why he's the back up and not starting.

Ok, so and I'm serious and curious. I have been hearing a lot about how tough/stingy Illinois defense is, and who knows could very wall be- -1st game of the year and everything -- -just curious and looking for info , - If they are going to be a really stiff defense then has to be one of two things right? - - Either Toledo is a lot better then some people think , or did Illinois have a lot of loss from last yr ?

Illinois gave up 28 points to Toledo, -- only won 30-28 so what gives? - -After watching these games yesterday I feel much better if we can get Jalen going I think w will be fine, could be just a lot of 1st game things that need cleaned up for some team but makes me wonder. - -Makes me feel better about our chances Friday

Side note - -I see where the guys are going to be wearing the Black Hawks uniforms Friday. with the 1941 Jay Hawk - -I really love the look myself, that's just me , I think they look pretty cool

Toledo won the MAC last year and are favored to repeat as champs so they're a legit good team.

The hype for the Illinois defense is because they returned almost every starter from the top, or at least top 3, scoring defense last season. The biggest change for that unit though is that they have a new defensive coordinator this season.

NEW UNIS • Sep 03, 2023 02:16 PM

KU Football's Facebook page just posted another new set of uniforms, presumably for the game against Illinois and they are straight 🔥🔥🔥!!!

Blackout uniforms with the Warhawk on the helmet and circus font for the name and numbers on the uniforms bring called the "Blackhawk" uniform.

Lot of winnable games on this schedule after watching football today.

I don't really see my opinion changing much about the winnability of KU's games this season. We don't play 3 of the 4 Big 12 teams that lost today this season Baylor, TCU, and WVU losing don't impact KU at all. I also think Tech's loss may have been a product of the overlooking Wyoming and looking forward to Oregon next week. OSU and ISU, like KU are mid pack teams and my opinion hasn't been changed about those teams.

First Game Impressions • Sep 02, 2023 02:38 PM

I've had a very long week and was struggling to stay awake last night. Fell asleep around halftime I think and watched the second half this morning.

Overall, pretty much what I expected without Daniels under center. Bean is a bigger risk taker than Daniels and we saw that last night. That pass into triple coverage in the first quarter should've been an INT and Bean had a couple of other passes that easily could've even picks. The flip side is that he has a stronger arm and isn't afraid to throw over the top more which forces secondaries to respect that aspect of his game which opens up his running more as well.

Daniels is generally a more conservative player which I think is more of what KU needs at this point because the margin for error is much smaller for KU because of the defense.

I don't know if we really learned anything about this team last night that we didn't already know in regards to the offense.

The biggest concern I saw defensively last night was the secondary and LB's struggling to stop intermediate crossing routes. I know Borland loves his man coverage with Bryant and Dotson on the outside, but mixing in more cover 2 or cover 3 can help disrupt those routes.

So give your score this weekend • Aug 31, 2023 05:57 PM

59-13. KU has a potential top 10 offense this season and I think we see that in full display against what's supposed to be a below average FCS team.

2023 Offensive Line • Aug 24, 2023 12:32 AM

I'm not too worried abiut the offense this year. Based in what KU's returning, they have a chance to be a top 10 offense this year. Any shift in the W-L columns will come from the progression of the defense this season.

Just happy Adidas didn't let us down here. Reading tea leaves here, it either means Dickinson is gone or Flory and his team seem comfortable letting him get seasoning at KU multiple years...

Either way, I'm just glad and Adidas made a point to get their top guy to their top school. As it should be.

Flory is raw enough on offense that he shouldn't start day 1 at a place like Kansas and shouldn't OAD if he wants a better chance at sticking in the NBA. Having him be a backup for a year to Dickinson and allowing him to play to his current strengths of being a high energy, above average defender and rebounder and allow him to develop some kind of offensive game for his second year is the ideal situation for both KU and Flory.

@Texas-Hawk-10 fiiiine. And arguing about an inch when he’s got a 7’4 wingspan is really a waste of time anyway. He’s flatly not going to be a college 4. Even in the scenario where Hunter comes back it would be tough to play them together. More likely he backs up Hunter and KJ sticks at the 4.

https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/iu-basketball-recruiting-whats-the-story-with-flory-several-things-add-up-to-make-him-pretty-special/ ↗

We're talking two different things here. I haven't been posting about what he'll play at KU. I've been posting about what he needs to do to succeed in the NBA and what he'll play there.

He'll be fine here at KU with his skill set and be able to contribute here for 1 or 2 years or however long he's in Lawrence. But if he wants to make and stick in the NBA at his size, he has to develop a game away from the basket. If he doesn't get any taller, being an undersized 5 with basically no offensive game is going to send him overseas instead of hanging around the NBA.

Great news and thanks to Flory Bidunga for picking KU. His background is so similar to Joel's that I imagine we will hear a lot of the similarities mentioned in the coming seasons. Way to go Coach Self and staff. RC

Embiid isn't the comp with Flory. He's going to be much more similar Doke or Chieck Diallo as far as skill set goes.

The profile has him at 6-9, 215. The author claims 6-10, but none of the recruiting services claim it so I would be very skeptical that all these sites are under reporting his height when it's usually inflated by an inch or two.

2024 Recruiting • Aug 13, 2023 03:04 AM

@FarmerJayhawk said in 2024 Recruiting:

@Texas-Hawk-10 not at KU. He’s a 50% type FT shooter so he just won’t be around long enough for his game to stretch. Now if he’s really 6’10 and gets to 240 then it’s a different conversation.

Who has him listed at 6-10? 24/7, Rivals, and ESPN all have him either 6-8 or 6-9 and between 210-220 lbs. so very much not a 5 at the NBA level. I've also read that his lack of height could force him to hang around college a second year. I believe Bleacher Report compared his offensive game to Doke which should also mean that Flory needs to work on his jump shot to develop some range if he wants to stick in the NBA because being an undersized center won't keep him in the NBA, it'll send him overseas.

2024 Recruiting • Aug 13, 2023 02:47 AM

Can Flory develop into a 4? That's what will determine his NBA future. He's got the athleticism, but can he develop his shooting range to be a 4? I would imagine that'll be a huge part of the focus on developing his game at KU.

The appeal of the Big 10 for many schools is academic. Being a member of the AAU is a requirement for Big 10 membership and these are generally considered to be the top research universities in the country. Access to those research grants is very appealing to university presidents and the Big 10 has historically been considered the top academic league among the power conferences along with the PAC 12.
Academics are also why schools like Virginia, North Carolina, Duke, and Georgia Tech have been mentioned as potential Big 10 targets over the years.

@mayjay lol no doubt I’m starting early.

Last year it was Joe should play more or actually year before that and then last year he showed he doesn’t have it.

This year we have the horses and both Morris and Elmarko are better nba prospects for a reason.

Gotta trust Bill

Being a better NBA prospect doesn't equal being a better college player right now. Dejuan Harris is a better college player than Morris or Jackson right now because he is a much more polished product than either of those two.

There's also a reason why Yesufu ended up in the wastelands of Pullman, Washington. He's an undersized 2 with a low BBIQ that's never met a shot he didn't like that Self never should've offered.

Constructing a championship caliber team isn't necessarily about the 5 best players, it's a bit the 5 right players and Harris brings a lot of other tools than scoring to the table. Having a real post threat now means that Harris can focus on his defense and running the show and not worry about having to score like last season. I wouldn't be shocked if Harris averaged 8-9 assists per game this season with the supporting cast he has.

Puerto Rico! • Aug 06, 2023 11:58 PM

@kjayhawks said in Puerto Rico!:

I was given a pretty hard time last season for saying Juan is very limited athletically. I do really like him and think his IQ and long arms help him with what he lacks physically. That being said do a 3/4 court sprint, vertical jump and shuttle drill with everyone on this team. I’d bet a 100k Juan is in the bottom 30% of all 3.

He's plenty athletic, he's just not physically very strong. Dejaun would absolutely be top 5 in sprint, shuttle, and vertical on the team. You can't be the caliber of defender he is if those traits are below average. It's his physical strength that really holds him back. He's entering his 4th year in college and if his weights are accurate, has only added 10 pounds since then. 247 listed him at 160 lbs. when was in HS and KU currently lasts him at only 170 lbs. To give a comparison, Elmarko Jackson is listed as an inch taller than Dejuan, but 25 lbs. heavier at 195 according to KU's website.

We all know Harris struggles with physicality because his body isn't big enough or strong to take a beating by bigger guards all game and those are the games he struggles with.

Well when you can't score goals for like 3 matches in a row, you shouldn't expect to be moving on into the quarterfinals. Funniest moment to me. In the PKs announcer "Rapinoe knows pressure" just before Megan chokes.

When Rose LaValle got screwed by the official in the last match and given an undeserved yellow, the tide was turned slightly against the US. Not positive that's a difference maker. But it couldn't have hurt.

TBH, not hurt too much, the rest of the world is catching up to the US it seems. The only thing I question is how world #3 Sweden plays #1 in the round of 16.

World #3 played world #1 in the round of 16 because world #1 couldn't win its group. This is also why the game was in the middle of the night. Fifa built the knockout stage TV schedule around the US winning its group which would've had their R16 game in prime time in Saturday night instead. It also hurt Norway as well because they got a time slot that basically did the thing to them and had them playing over night Norway time.

Lovely sport, grew up playing and was a big fan but it just doesn't scratch the itch for me.

Coming soon are games in Arizona that don't start til 11pm eastern time which for me on a work day is ridiculous. I know others it won't be so bad or will be beneficial even but for me this is a major put off.

The arms race for money will continue to erode whatever organic beauty college sports provided.

Kansas and Arizona are two of the biggest brands in basketball. Do you really think ESPN would want that match up to be relegated to the late night time slot even if the game was in Tuscon? If the Big 12 is smart with their scheduling, when teams go out west, they'd pair them up with one of the games on a Saturday which would mean possibly 1 midweek late night tip per season in Big 12 play. I'm just gonna say that I think that's manageable.

@Gorilla72 said in And then we have these discussions:

New Big 12/16. 4 pods or 2 divisions?

You can't really do anything super effective in football. If you wanted to have something, splitting the league into quadrants and having a school play the other 3 schools in the quadrant every and develop a rotating system where all 12 non Texas schools play at least 1 road game in Texas per year to help schools with recruiting visibility in the state.

For basketball, you could keep the quadrant system and still have an 18 game schedule with each school playing the other 3 teams in their quadrant home and away (this helps some rivalry games like the Holy War, KU/KSU, UA/ASU, etc.) and play the other 12 schools once each season. Whenever the non Arizona amd Utah schools make their trek out west for the 2 road games against whichever combination of schools it'd be that season, play those games back to back to minimize travel time and expenses for school.

Olympic sports can use that system based on however many schools participate in that sport to try and minimize travel expenses for schools.

Probably going to have to split into quadrants for smaller sports to help with travel costs. The Utah and Arizona schools as a quadrant. Colorado, KU, KSU, and OSU as a quadrant. The Texas schools as a quadrant, and then Cincy, ISU, UCF, and WVU as the last quadrant.

There's not really a good pairing for UCF in regards to travel since they're 800 miles from their closest Big 12 school.
