I cannot even imagine what this would feel like if it was the Big12 getting shredded overnight. Glad it's not, and hopefully this solidifies our position for a while?

The PAC 12's inept leadership of Scott and Kliavkoff is why it didn't happen. The PAC 12 has had 2 chances to end kill the Big 12 and could never pull the trigger. Texas and OU had one foot out the door of the Big 12 back in 2011, but the PAC didn't pull the trigger. They also had a chance at a killshot 2 years ago after Texas and OU announced they were going to the SEC and again failed to pull the trigger and kill Big 12.

The PAC 12 has nobody to blame but themselves for the death of their conference.

I honestly feel for the Pac12. None of this makes any sense. We have had our fair share of being poached and it isn't fun.

The issue continues to be TV money. TV money is what has destroyed college conferences. What I don't really understand is why the P5 conferences simply didn't come together and negotiate all deals together. Keep the conferences with a reasonable travel schedule and traditional rivalries.

Instead it is nothing but backstabbing. And it is such a disservice to the fans.

The P5 won't do that because they literally sued the NCAA to control their own TV deals in the 1980's. There'd also be a pretty strong case that of they did that, they'd open themselves to an anti-trust suit.

Haven't UK's been televised? I feel like they have been but I could be wrong.

The World University Games was an international tournament, not some exhibition games like these. Also, no idea if UK has ever had their international trip games televised or not before.

@jayballer67 If Oregon amd Washington were the 15th and 16th teams, it would be the blow that losing two schools when you're already down to 8 or 10 schools would be. A 16 team Big 12 would be in a much better position to absorb potentially losing schools like Oregon and Washington than a potentially 8 team PAC 12 would be.

@kjayhawks said in Kansas Football Player Arrested over Bomb Scare:

I actually do think appliances are crap these days, bought my first washer and dryer used from my mom that was 20 years old and they lasted another 10 for me. I’ve had (8 years) 3 sets since then, 10 years is about max on them nowadays. I had to put a heating element in the old dryer once but the trouble now is the parts you need to repair anything cost as much as a new machine. Last dryer needed a control panel $415 for a new one or go buy another new dryer for $520. I’d say it’s not normal for stuff to last 50 years but we never replaced that stuff often growing up. My in laws built their house new in 1982 with all new appliances. Guess what they all still work and they won’t buy new for the same reason.

Most machinery in general is crap today compared to the past because modern machinery (cars, appliances, etc.) isn't built to last because companies figured out that if you build something that lasts forever, it's bad for business in the long run because a person only buys that product one time. Building machines to intentionally wear out and need replacing generates more business for those companies because people have to replace things.

I'm going to slightly disagree with @FarmerJayhawk about cookware though. I do love cast iron because it is very versatile good for cooking most proteins, but there absolutely plenty of things that non-stick and enamel cookware is good for as well. I love pasta and making homemade sauces. The acid in tomatoes though is terrible for cast iron seasoning so I tend to use non-stick when making various sauces that have high acidity.

@DCHawker I dunno- WSU has been to a bowl game 8 out the last 10 years. Colorado was 1-11 last year. I know they suck at basketball, but so does Colorado. Another easy win. The other team I have heard is Oregon St, but lots of folks aren't very excited about them. I might add that the Wazzu AD used to be the AD at Tator U ( formerly known as Silo Tech).

They made those bowl games because they had Mike Leach before he went to MSU.

Martin Stadium is small and if Washington St. was in the Mountain West, they'd still have the smallest stadium in the conference. Washington St. and Oregon St. are among the smallest athletic department budgets among P5 schools and like KSU, are only in P5 conferences because they are "original" members of those leagues. WSU and OSU, like KSU, are more on par with the Mountain West or AAC in terms of athletic department budgets than they are with the bigger schools in their leagues.

I can't see Yormark having much interest in adding WSU or OSU to the Big 12.

I'm wondering if there's a mental health issue at play here because that's what this feels like.

Out of the 12 games, 7 have happened in the NCAA Tournament with 5 of those coming in the Final Four including 2 times in the national championship game with each team winning once and each game being considered an all time classic by most people. UNC won the first ever meeting in the 1957 championship game in 3OT's in what would be Wilt's final game in a KU uniform and KU completing the largest comeback in championship game history in the 2022 championship game. KU and UNC also met in the national semifinals in 1991, 1993, and 2008 with KU winning in 1991 and 2008 and UNC in 1993. The two schools have met two other times in the NCAA Tournament in back to back seasons in the Elite 8 in 2012 and round of 32 in 2013, both Kansas victories.

KU and UNC also met in November of 2002 at MSG in the Preseason NIT with UNC winning that game in what would be Roy's final season at KU before taking over at UNC who missed the NCAA Tournament that season.

Roy has been the head coach in 7 of the 12 all time meetings and only has a 1-6 record in KU/UNC games with the 1991 Final Four being his lone victory.

KU and UNC played a home and home in 1959/1960 with the 1959 game played in Raleigh and the 1960 game in Lawrence which to date is the only meeting between the two teams on either campus. UNC was victorious in each of those meetings.

They also played a home and home in 1981 with the first game in January of 1981 in Kansas City and the return game the next season in November in Charlotte with the home team winning each game.

KU holds a 5-2 edge in meetings in the NCAA Tournament and UNC holds a 4-1 edge in regular season meetings.

Awesome! Did Roy not want that to happen?

No, Roy was against a home and home because of the emotion involved for him which is a fair reason to me.

Also, unless they play in the NCAA Tournament this season, this will only be the 13th all time meeting with series currently tied 6-6 with KU havingwon the last 4 meetings. Next season will only be the 2nd time ever UNC has traveled to Lawrence and 2025 will be the first time KU has ever played in Chapel Hill.

Yeah bleacher report had him 5th in their super early mock.. Definitely getting attention and imo rightfully so

That's the extreme high end. I'm not aware of anywhere else projecting him as a top 10 pick. But with as many mocks as there are out there that have Jackson as a 2024 1st rounder, that means he's on NBA radars already and they will be coming to see how he stacks up and how good his playmaking abilities really are because that's what has NBA scouts excited about Jackson the most.

The Big 12 sort of announced the conference schedule today. They announced who everyone would play home and away, only at home, and only away.

KU will play Baylor, Houston, KSU, OU, and OSU twice, BYU, Cincy, TCU, and Texas in AFH, and ISU, Tech, UCF, and West Virginia on the road for their 18 game conference schedule. Exact dates coming later on.

Apparently, Lew Perkins died yesterday at 78 after a battle with Parkinsons. He leaves a very complicated legacy at KU. He oversaw arguably one of the greatest seasons in college athletics history during the 2007-08 season with the football team winning the Orange Bowl and the basketball team winning a national championship 3 months later. He also played a very prominent role in the rapid decline of Kansas football with his handling of the Mark Mangino investigation.

The Bahamian team will have some pretty big names present for the games, but TBD on if any of them will play against KU. The names that will be present at least are Klay and Mychal Thompson, DeAndre Ayton, Buddy Hield, and Eric Gordon.

If nothing else, I'm guessing thise guys can give some really good advice to KU's players for the upcoming season and prepping for the NBA.

The full Mass St. roster includes 11 former Jayhawks and a childhood friend of the Morris twins who played at LaSalle.

Brandon Rush

Dedric Lawson

Jamari Traylor

Keith Langford

Kevin Young

Lagerald Vick

Mario Chalmers

Mario Little

Mitch Lightfoot

Rodney Green (LaSalle)

Thomas Robinson

Tyshawn Taylor

My thoughts on this group is that they have a good mix of players. Chalmers, Langford, Rush and Vick can all light it up from outside. Robinson and Lawson can clean up the glass. Lightfoot, Little, Traylor, and Young can all do the dirty work on both ends and don't need to score much. I don't know anything about Green's game and what his strengths and weaknesses are other than he's a 2 that played in Venezuela last year.

Juan, Kev and Kj are great dudes and team players. Morris is on his best behavior and Hunter knows he’s the man but still respects Self and his refining.

Throw in the freshman who already want to naturally please Self plus Braun who I’m sure has heard all about how things go….we look good!

Get us that Aussy Bill!

@BShark @FarmerJayhawk - think he plays any significant minutes?

I doubt Self would be targeting a wing that can't immediately contribute at this point. KU needs playable depth at the 3 and 4 spots right now and with Furphy's size, should be able to back up both Adams and McCullar to get decent minutes.

@bskeet said in Welcome, Marcus Adams Jr.!:

Wow. We hardly knew ye has never been truer.

Very odd.

I will say that if you were a freshmen coming into the team right now, you would not get the typical team greeting or orientation.

The team is non-organic in a way teams rarely are. There are lots of older players. They are all fighting for legitimacy and credibility, and the majority have experience fighting for minutes at other schools in other systems.

Other than DeJuan (and he seems like he may be naturally reticent), there aren't guys who are in a "safe" position who can help another kid to work through this or that or explain the culture, etc. In other words, not a lot of mentorship for the 17-18 year olds.

If the players held a players only meeting about Adams, then I seriously doubt people not wanting to be leaders or mentors is an issue with this group. That's a strong sign of leadership and that the team likely tried to break Adams of his bad habits several times before having the meeting and going to Self about wanting to cut Adams loose.

This opens the door for a lot more minutes for Chris Ledlum if KU pushes for him. Probably at 20 minutes per game available now playing the back up 3 and 4 spot in a smallball line up.

Also thinking it's possible McDowell doesn't redshirt now as well depending on what happens with Morris.

Looks like Ochai may not be playing today for Utah. I know Jabari Smith and Amen Thompson are also sitting for the Rockets because I'm assuming Utah and Houston have seen what they've needed from those players and don't want to risk injury to anyone.

Jalen Wilson and the Nets lost in the Summer League semifinals against Cleveland today in OT. Jalen had a very Jalen Stat line. Led Broooklyn in scoring with 22 points on 4-13 shooting (2-6 from 3 and 12-14 from the FT line) and 11 rebounds.

The second semifinal getting ready to start is Utah vs. Houston. Hope Ochai has a good game, but go Rockets!

2023 Season Predictions • Jul 16, 2023 04:04 AM

@stoptheflop said in 2023 Season Predictions:

@Texas-Hawk-10 Yes, 35 ppg sucks, but KU had the 5th most difficult schedule last year, behind W Virg, Texas and KState (according to the first and only site I checked). Just guessing here because dinner's almost ready and I'm not going to look it up, but our defense very likely played against much better offenses than about 120 other D1 teams. I don't expect the Big 12 to be nearly as strong this year. So, I'm hopeful that our defense will be good enough to decrease the score on every possession pressure that's been on the offense. Regarding the comments about mediocrity, I guaranty you most of us would have very happy with mediocrity before KU started 5-0 last season. Too damn bad Jason Bean overthrew our open receiver in OT against Ark. Heck, at this time last year, I was just hoping to win 3 games.

KU only played 3 teams in the top 25 in scoring offense last season. TCU (9), Houston (t16), and Texas (25). There's 6 more between 26-50, but that's not exactly elite territory. KU was the #2 scoring offense in the conference last season.

The reason our defense sucks and will likely still struggle a lot this upcoming season is because KU simply doesn't have enough playable depth on the DLine yet. KU needs to get to a point to where they can stop other teams ground games because that's where the B12 is now, but they were 7th worst against the run nationally last season at over 200 ypg.

2023 Season Predictions • Jul 15, 2023 04:04 PM

@approxinfinity said in 2023 Season Predictions:

@stoptheflop why would the sportswriters dog this team? Surely we arent bottomfeeders any more?

This team still rightfully has plenty of questions about the defense. This was a bottom 10 defense nationally last year that gave up 35 ppg. If KU was projected to have an average to good defense, then they would likely be a top 5 pick and contender to win the league.

In massive rebuilds like this, it usually takes longer for the defense to have a breakthrough and that's why the media is still questioning this team.

Another reason is we don't exactly have a favorable schedule. We play all 4 teams the media picked to be in the top 4 of the league and we don't play two of the bottom 3 in the predictions. The home/away split of KU's schedule didn't do KU many favors as well as a lot of KU's more winnable Big 12 games are on the road.

@kjayhawks said in Celebrity Encounters at KU:

I don’t think this thread is too bad @benshawks08 you also have to understand just because you’ve had that experience doesn’t mean everywhere it’s the same experience, even when I was in school several good athletes never showed up but still played every Friday night. @Texas-Hawk-10 I definitely think the cost of living is part of it. Some it is the parents just giving stuff without earning it. If I wanted something as a kid I bought it. My parents gave me some food and a twin mattress on the floor. So I started delivering papers at age 9. Kids now days either don’t work or show up late and don’t actually work while there. I’ve got a brother that manages a wal mart in North Carolina, tells me the exact same thing I see here. Unwilling to work and on phone all day. Maybe y’all think the future is in good hands with our youth and worlds headed in a good direction. That 💯 fine and you are welcome to have that opinion, I just don’t see it.

In regards to parents giving their kids things without working for something, that's not new to Gen Z kids. You said that when you wanted extra spending money, you got a paper route. That's great, but is again showing a lack of understanding issues current kids deal with. Jobs like that simply don't exist anymore. A lot of these traditional first jobs for kids are going away due to digitizing, outsourcing, and automation so many kids don't have those opportunities anymore because the amount of those jobs just simply don't exist anymore.

My first job was at a grocery story as a cashier, bagger, and cart person when I was 14. I still go to that grocery store pretty regularly and now there's usually only 1 cashier working with no baggers due to the amount of self checkout registers they have now. There's also usually only 1 person getting carts, maybe 2 people during peak hiurs for the check out and carts. When I worked there, there was usually about 8-10 people working during peak hours.

This is just another example of systemic issues facing young Millennials and Gen Z kids that older Millennials, Gen X, amd older generations didn't have to deal with.

@benshawks08 well I’m glad it works for you. My only question is would you pass a lid that never came to your class, was a star football play that your superintendent said he would fire you if not?

I would fail that kid and then I would leave that school and district because that kid is being set up for failure in life by not being held accountable. I would also tipoff someone at the state education agency level to investigate that superintendent because if he's threatening someone's job over an athlete's grade, there's probably a lot of other shady, unethical, and probably illegal stuff going on in that district.

I've never had an administrator have an issue with me failing an athlete. My athlete's that I coach also know that if they ever get caught skipping class, that they're missing game time.

I also have zero issues with failing an athlete and have failed my best basketball player, and eventually kicked him off the team because he refused to complete his daily work in my class.

@FarmerJayhawk I just call it like I see it buddy, this generation is softest and laziest. Hard truth

I had a much longer response oroginally, but shortened it to this.

Which generation are you referring to? Gen Z or Millennials?

Also, what do you think the root causes of being soft and lazy are?

You even said it yourself already that in many families today, both parents have to work. Think about that. Why is it necessary for both parents to have to work to provide for a family when that wasn't the case when I was kid or when you were a kid?

I teach 7th grade (12-13 year olds) who have never seen an increase in minimum wage in their lifetimes despite cost of living increasing by over 40% in their short lives so far.

We're going on 14 years now without an increase in federal minimum wage. A full time minimum wage job is just over $15,000 per year before taxes. Minimum wage was never intended to be a poverty salary, it was intended to be the minimum living wage needed for a family to have the bare necessities to survive.

A family could could live off a minimum wage job a generation ago. Now, even with two parents making minimum wage, they're still going to be well below the poverty line basically anywhere in America. It takes a person working 96 hours per week on minimum wage to earn the average living wage in the U.S. That's basically 2.5 weeks of work in one week to make a living wage.

Another reality is that most people in entry level jobs can't afford to live alone, they either have to remain at home or have roommates to afford rent. Cost of living is also why many couples are choosing to not have kids because they see the financial struggle of others with kids and realize they can't afford kids.

I don't know why any sane rational 69 year old man would choose to fight this. I don't picture Huggins as someone who would deal with retirement well. He seems like he would probably die very quickly without having something to occupy all of his time based on what we know of his personality. Maybe he could go the Jim Calhoun route and take a D3 job as a way to fill that hole, but I don't see him doing well with a lot of free time on his hands.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Interesting about Mangino. My impression up to this point was he was just a victim of modern day political correctness that can't handle a macho coach being physical with a player or two, but who truly loves that player at the same time. There was a HS coach in Madison who was highly successful, put numerous players in the NFL and slapped a guy on the helmet during a game which many fans and parents saw and forced the guy out. That's the type of thing that I though Mangino was bing forced out by.

The finger poke to Arist Wright was the straw that broke the camel's back with the team. There's another incident where he told a black player that did something he didn't like to go back to streets like your brother. There's numerous stories involving his conduct towards campus staff that was abusive, especially campus security. He was also ejected from his son's football game for berating the the refs.

There's a reason why other schools weren't calling even after the Orange Bowl and why it took him so long to get another coaching job and why he couldn't last in those jobs either.

There were definitely politics involved as Mangino and Perkins absolutely hated each other and Perkins actually wanted to fire Mangino after the 2006 season where KU lost 4 games late and could've easily been 10-2 that season, but was eventually talked into giving Mangino one more season and Mangino delivered the Orange Bowl season.

Mangino was just an asshole.

That's your opinion - -and your entitled - - there are assholes every where- -then you have perfect assholes right ?- -oh he POKED oh hell no - -don't be poking my baby - - , and heberated the refs - -wow there is a new one - -berate the official. - Have you seen Coach Self eve be-rate a ref ? -surely not. Mangino sticking up for his son's team thiking bad calls which probably was just like Coach Self sticks up for his guys when he thinks they are getting screwed over.

You know funny the multiple times I talke with Mangino seemed like he was just fine, not abusive with me, didn't be rate me - -hmmm imagine that , he must of been having an off night that night that asshole

you point out him regretting his son's game - -what do you expect him to say. I was a Mangino fan and still am. always will be, kinda funny too, then we can always bring up how people were on Mangino about his weight, how he was so big brunt of all kinds of ridicule.

Would I have like to see him lose for his health - - Dam Straight, anyone ever think maybe he had tried - - quite possible he had an over active thyroid - skum bags always throwing shots , jokes about his weight - - -that's his decision, if he was happy with himself the way he was - -then so be it- -it's his body and like I always said - -his weight had NOTING to do with the way the guy could -- but I got the perfect theory as to why he was overweight - -probably cause he was such a asshole as we have been told

That's fine to be a fan, but to be blind to his actions because you had a few interactions that don't match up with numerous stories out there is just refusing to take the rose colored glasses off amd realizing that Mangino was not a popular person within a lot of the KU community that had daily interactions with him.

Let me ask you something, do you ever regret your behavior in a situation where you know you did nothing wrong, or do you regret it in situations where know you were in the wrong? Mangino regretting his actions is him knowing he went too far, bit he apparently didn't care enough to actually change and grow from that situation based on the numerous stories about him during his 7 years at KU.

The Mangino mess is arguably one of the worst handled by administration in college athletics. To me if it was really that bad, they should fired him and had Warinner be the interim head coach. Sweet Lou is the worst athletics director in Kansas history and Wichita State history only people worse IMO are the one’s involved in sex related scandals. Mangino is a hot head period, not really any argument on that front. Do I think most good coaches are? Yes, is Bill Self? Most likely yes if you read beyond the streak and the KU books that I have. Zero question that front as well several things Self has done could get a less valued coach fired. My saying is “winning assholes are okay, losing assholes are gone”. I had 2 close friends on that final KU football team. They both told me the offense loved Mangino. The defense hated him. I remember the likes of Sharp, Meier and Ressing defending him. Some kids can’t handle being yelled at or any accountability whatsoever. Never had a coach yelling at me bother me too much. Heck my middle school football coach would grab your face mask and chew you out. Take his metal whistle and beat you on the helmet with it while cussing you out. I always liked him, he lived 2 doors down from me til a couple of years ago. We live in a very soft world these days. Easy times create soft people, hard times create strong people. The tide will tip again the way we are headed. Being a hiring manager getting anyone below the age of 30 to show up on time and not be on their phone 3/4s of the day is nothing short of a miracle. I’m getting off topic lol

I want to push back on something you bring up without you probably even realizing you're brining it up. The three players whose names you mention that supposedly had zero issues with Mangino are all white whereas the players who were the most outspoken against Mangino were black players. I can also tell you definitively that not everyone on offense loved Mangino. My source of information on this was someone who was an offensive skill position player on those teams.

I think there was a bit of a racial element involved. Not that Mangino is necessarily racist, but that he lacked awareness as to the connotations of his actions toward black players and how that would be perceived because he didn't know how to deal with a lot black kids from an urban setting because that's not his background.

I coach at a school that is predominantly black and Hispanic and I can tell you there are absolutely things I can't say or do without risking my job because I'm not black or Hispanic. I can also say with certainty that the majority of my black athletes do not come from two parent households and that does have a huge impact on those kids and how they perceive male authority figured, especially white ones. It's very much becoming a part of black, American culture unfortunately because of issues beyond the control of those kids. I can also tell you it's fairly common for my male, Hispanic students and athletes to not have much respect for their female teachers because they've been raised in Machismo culture in which women are trained to be subservient to men and that leads to a lot of culture clashes between male, Hispanic students and black, female teachers.
