Lardy or whatever the bracketologists name is at espn says BShark is right, KU is gonna be way down next year, sees a 3 seed for us. True test of the real KU fans next season! League coach of the year won't get Manhattan St back to the dance according to Joe either. Also Silo Tech is one of only 2 teams to not be dancing from the Big 12 which is really 1o but soon to be a gazillion.

Whatever. IMO, Lunardi is a hack.

A 3 seed isn't out of the question based on how the final roster ends up. Being a 3 seed means being one of the 12 best teams so KU could still conceivably be a top 10 team and end up as a 3 seed next season.

We sure could of used him , would help answer our problems at the 4.He is a stretch 4 can shoot the 3 they say Mcdonalds All American. He will be the highest unsigned player - - Dam lol

You still make a very strong push for him at this point. He'll likely be the best option to come available at the 4 spot and KU has a need and a lot of minutes to offer. If KU were able to somehow land this kid, Hunter Dickinson, and Primo Spears, that'd put KU as a top 10 team next season.

Not a guy you'd want to headline the group but Spears is a fine player. He can create for himself off the bounce which isn't something we have had lately other than Remy.

Exactly, I'd like him as a second or third option you could give the ball to when things break down at the end of the shot clock and tell him to make something happen.

Well think I'm going to gamble and say our 1st Portal commit will be - - - -Spears - -just got a feel

That's frightening if it is the best we can do and I hope you are wrong. Smallish lead guard who doesn't do anything particularly well on a team that went 7-25. 40% shooter; 30% from 3; 3.3 TOs per game. Inefficient and not a great defender. Worse than Juan in virtually every respect other than jacking it up more often. Well, that's not quite fair - he is much better from the FT line, so that is something...

Seriously, that's our lead play in the portal? What is he the answer to?

A big part of Primo's shooting numbers being what there were was just how bad Georgetown was last season. Primo was asked to do everything for them last season and hurt his numbers. Playing him on a better team where he doesn't have to take 16 shots per game will help those numbers. That doesn't mean he'll turn into an elite shooter, because that's not his strength. A bump to 47-48% from two and 33-34% from three do seem plausible with better shot selection. Spears also had a 30% assist rate last season which was close to Dajuan's 31.1% assist rate.

His defense is concerning, but he played over 37 mpg last season so I feel like part of his issues on defense were related to how many minutes he played. While he probably won't ever be an all-conference caliber defender, I think he could be passable if he's playing closer to 30 mpg and not having to conserve energy due to being the top scoring option.

I think Primo would overall be a good fit here if he's willing to play off ball and be the 2nd or 3rd scoring option.

KU baseball is doing remarkably well under first year coach. They won a series against a ranked West VA team on the road.

It looks like they should at least make the Big 12 Tournament this year which they missed way too frequently under Price. I would argue our baseball program wasn't that much better than football over the past 15 years. It's been 10 years since KU last made the NCAA Tournament. I don't think KU should be in it every year because we don't have the history or location for that to be realistic, but it'd be nice to see KU make the tournament at least 60% of the time. I think that's an achievable goal.

Woodland finished even for the day and -3 for the tournament. He went +4 over the last 10 holes.

Masters • Apr 09, 2023 09:18 PM

Phil Mickelson shoots a 65 to finish at -8 currently tied for second with Koepka and 2 behind Rahm.

Koepka is falling apart, definitely didn't see that coming. Woodland cooled off down the stretch so doesn't look like he'll have a chance to win, but could maybe get back into the top 5.

Masters • Apr 09, 2023 07:44 PM

Gary Woodland is making a charge today in the final round of the Masters. Currently at -7 through 8 holes in his round in 4th place. He's currently 3 shots behind Koepka and Rahm.

Reynolds wouldn't ruffle feathers. You could still get Ernest 15-20 minutes a game. Plus, Reynolds has 2 years. With Dickinson, It's going to be Hunter 30+, and we only get him for one year. I still say you take Hunter, but I sure like that Reynolds kid. Reynolds is a very good back to the basket scorer- reminds me of Dave.

The biggest concern I have with Reynolds is durability. He's missed time every season, and significant time in two seasons because of injuries. That's the risk factor with Reynolds.

That said, I do like Reynolds, but health is a legitimate concern with him.

@kuballin10 said in 2023 Transfer Portal:

@Texas-Hawk-10 that I’d be curious because reynolds pers you should like :)

Reynolds also can score on the block

It all depends on udeh’s off-season progression. He develops moves and better shot blocking he will be tough to keep off the floor

That big lineup is gonna be crazy. KJ showed when he was in foul trouble against Arkansas we sucked on O.

His PER is a big a part of why I'd be interested in him, but Reynolds would definitely be a fallback option for me. His numbers would likely take a hit moving up from average/bad AAC teams and he also has a history of injuries having missed significant time in 2 of his 3 seasons. He's also not a great defender so that step up in competition would likely turn him into a bad defender.

I'd obviously rather have Dickinson or Shedrick over Reynolds, but I don't think Reynolds would be a bad option to have off the bench.

@Jethro said in Is this our true rebuild year?:

Having so many newbies makes me think unless we portal pull amazingly well, we could be in for a rebuild. For us, that means NCAA tournament w/o winning the B12. Have hard times come upon us? Could we be an actual "bubble" team? Or do we slay the portal, and are back in the Top 5? Bill seems to think Top 5...do you agree?

Well evidently some other people either know things we don't - -OR they just reaching - -I mean really reaching -cause I read ANOTHER article last night people making their predictions for next year and they had KU as 15-1 to win the Championship - this is the 2nd article I've read where they have picked us to win or get to the final four. - Of course like they say a lot is on who we have returning-- -who we got coming in & then the Portal but they are saying with the names we are connected to in the portal is huge

With all of the vacancies on the team, these high pre-season rankings are fool's gold and everyone should know it if you're being honest and objective.

The pundits' projections are almost exclusively based on coach Bill Self, his history of success and his emerging position as Alpha among all coaches. Yes, KU Basketball is now the recipient of the same ranking inflation that Duke received when Coach K was there. It wouldn't be like this if Jay Wright had stayed another year or two, but his departure and UK/Cal's recent performance woes have created a vacuum in basketball coaching that hasn't been seen since Wooden retired.

Bill Self is The Man... and this year's early tourney exit didn't tarnish him... it possibly enhanced him due to his absence in the post-season.

The uncertainty of what the final version of the roster will look like does mean a lot of people are guessing. This is also why there's a bit of a discrepancy in where KU is ranked. Some have KU as a top 5, some have KU in the 15-20 range.

I also think with this many new faces, there's likely to be a bit of a learning curve with this team as they learn to play together and with what we already know about KU's schedule next season with UConn, Missouri, and an absolutely stacked Maui field, it's conceivable for KU to have 3-4 losses entering B12 play next season as the team learns to play together.

NCAA NON- KU GAMES • Apr 02, 2023 03:14 AM

If we're talking about the modern era of the NCAA Tournament which I consider to be 1985 when the tournament expanded to 64 teams, UConn would be top 5 since that time considering they're currently tied with UNC for the second most titles in that span with 4 and should be a pretty big favorite to tie Duke with 5 on Monday night. KU is tied for 4th with Kentucky and Villanova with 3 titles since the tournament expanded to 64 teams.

@Texas-Hawk-10 this all makes sense. But we have 1 thing going that the others don't necessarily and that's winning. That's why he went back to Michigan this season and it didn't happen. He could be feeling a Lil hungry. CS is hopefully preparing to throw the proverbial kitchen sink as we speak or already has

UK and Michigan were his final two out of high school. UK can offer more NIL money than anyone else. Oscar Tshiebwe is the hurdle there and it sounds like he's strongly leaning towards beginning his pro career.

Georgetown is home and their NIL program is also very strong and willing to do whatever Ed Cooley needs to rebuild Georgetown quickly. And Ed Cooley is more than capable of that considering what he accomplished at Providence. With the portal, he can have Georgetown in the tournament next season. Look at what Tang did at KSU this year and Dickinson is maybe an even bigger impact player than Keyontae Johnson was.

KU Offseason Chef Bill Cooking Thread • Apr 01, 2023 12:17 AM

If Hunter Dickinson has interest in KU, you make room for him. Self or someone else should already have been on phone pitching him on a spot here.

because he is a game changer for someone and at a place like KU where Self loves playing through the post, Dickinson could be a national player of the year candidate here. Adams, Udeh, and Ejiofor are not at that level of good yet.

That said, I don't think Dickinson will be wearing crimson and blue next season. Kentucky or Georgetown are likely the landing spots for Dickinson. Kentucky will likely be dependent on Oscar Tshiebwe leaving which sounds likely at this point and Georgetown is a strong contender because Dickinson is from the DC area and have a good coach in Ed Cooley who will be looking to get Georgetown turned around in a hurry. Dickinson would be that guy for Cooley.

Impressive win. Probably should've been in the NCAA tourney. NEXT YEAR

They were a bubble team going into the Big 12 Tournament and lost their first game to 1-17 TCU and looked god awful in that game. That's why they didn't make the NCAA Tournament this year.

2023-24 Schedule • Mar 30, 2023 12:35 AM

@DanR said in 2023-24 Schedule:

Tennessee ranked? Why.? Honestly, why would KU be a top ten team at this point?

It's the Sporting News way too early rankings after the Elite 8 games. They have UCLA at 2, Purdue at 4, Marquette at 5, Gonzaga at 10, KU at 13, and Tennessee at 18. Obviously a lot could change based on what happens with the transfer market and who stays and a goes from some top teams, but I don't find any of those rankings unreasonable at this point. With UCLA for example, does Adem Bona stay or go, does Zach Edey stay or go for Purdue, does Drew Timme use his Covid year at Gonzaga?

Tennessee also has several major contributors that could return for their Covid seasons if they choose so. Vescovi, James, Nkamhoua, and Plavsic could all potentially return. That's also around the time Zakai Ziegler should returning. If they Vescovi back especially, Tennessee could be a lot higher than 18 next season.

2023-24 Schedule • Mar 29, 2023 11:12 PM

Looking ahead to next season, I see KU is playing in the Maui Invitational again and holy crap is that field absolutely stacked next season, even more than normal. In alphabetical order, the 8 teams playing in Maui next season are Chaminade, Gonzaga, Kansas, Marquette, Purdue, Syracuse, Tennessee, and UCLA.

That's potentially 4 top 10 teams, could even be up to 5 depending on how the transfer market shakes out in one tournament. Marquette, Purdue, and UCLA are all potential top 5 teams next season while Gonzaga and Kansas are potential top 10 teams. Tennessee should also be ranked and could be a potential top 15 team. I don't know if there's ever been an 8 team preseason tournament where potentially 6 of the teams were ranked as highly as these 6 are projected to be next season.

@wissox I view UConn as kind of the anti-KU. Where KU has the consistency, UConn has the titles. Their down years can be pretty down.

KU's lowest win total since 99 is 21 (in the 20-21 year). UConn has had 11 (ELEVEN!!) seasons where they didn't reach that mark in that same time frame.

But they have 4 titles and we have 2 (boy that second one helps!). Also, I find it interesting that they've only been to the Final Four 5 times (now 6). Meaning when they get there they tend to win the whole thing. They certainly seem on track to do just that again this year. Comparatively, KU has 16 final fours overall winning it all 4 times. KU has been to the final four 5 times since 99, winning it all twice of course.

Was it just HEM who wanted to trade resumes with UConn or were there more on here that would prefer their recent history to ours?

KU's been to 6 Final Four's since then. 2002, '03, '08, '12, '18, and '22. The KU-UConn debate is a good one because there's valid points for both schools about which one has been more successful over the past 25 years.
