@coolfool13 The funny thing is I hate what it's doing to all the non KU's of the world. We're gonna get our guys via recruiting and the portal. But some guy ends up at a solid mid major, like Dayton lets say, and plays very well, and suddenly he sees greener pastures and bolts leaving the solid mid major fans sad and depressed.
The counter to that though is a lot of top tier talent that doesn't get early playing time also moves down to these high level mid major programs. FAU, SDSU, and Creighton this year, Houston making the Elite 8 in 2022 and Final Four in 2021, and in 2020 Dayton, Creighton, and SDSU all were going to be top 2 seeds and have a good chance to make the Elite 8 or deeper. Every team above was a mid major that made at least the Elite 8 in the NCAA tournament. This new reality of the portal hasn't stopped mid major teams from making deep runs.
Zuby Ejiofor has visits scheduled with Villanova, St. John's, TCU, and San Diego St.
He'd be a really good fit at any of those 4 as they're all very much defensively minded programs. SDSU is a really intriguing fit to me with them coming off their first Final Four appearance.
Maybe jumping the gun a little bit, but it seems fairly likely Mgbako will be a Jayhawk on Friday so an updated projection.
Starters:
G- Harris
G- Morris
F- Mgbako
F- KJ Adams
C- Dickinson
Rotation players
G- Jackson
G- Timberlake
F- Marcus Adams
F- Udeh
Deep Bench
G- Johnson
G- McDowell
There's 3 teams I would use sets from with KJ and Dickinson at the 5. 2008 with Arthur at the 4 because he didn't shoot 3's and Jackson and Kaun didn't play out from the basket much on offense. 2012 with T-Rob and Withey because Dickinson has a better version of T-Rob's offensive game and KJ can do some of the things Withey did that year. And then lastly 2019 before Doke got hurt and it was him and Dedric Lawson together. Those are the last three times Self has had two true bigs and every time but 2008, at least one of them was competent enough from 3 to where you had to respect their shot.
Within the offense, I think you basically play Dickinson as your 4 and KJ as the 5 because Dickinson does have an outside shot that has to be respected so he can drag a defender out with him and Self can run some hi-low action with Dickinson in the high post.

Is there any chance that McCullar comes back?
If McCullar is very likely to get a two-way contract, he won't be back. If his feedback is that it's very unlikely he'd get a two-way contract, then that's when there becomes an increased chance If him withdrawing from the draft.
Based on where most mocks have him ranked, he's got a pretty good shot at getting a two-way deal with some team.

@Texas-Hawk-10 udeh is much longer though, higher ceiling. Zuby wont be an elite shot blocker.
Longer doesn't necessarily mean a higher ceiling or better shot blocker because Zuby did have a significantly higher block rate than Udeh. Zuby just wasn't as flashy or make the highlight plays that Udeh did. Doesn't matter now though obviously.
Even before the entire schedule is released, here's what's know about KU's schedule next season. Known opponents include Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, UConn, and Yale. There's also the 3 games in Maui with an absolutely stacked field that could include at least 3 top 5 teams and a couple of more in the top 10. The contract for the Big 12/SEC Challenge has expired so that's gone away now.
We should see 5 more non conference games added as it sounds like the Big 12 is planning on staying with an 18 game conference schedule. I'm assuming the rest of those 5 games will be against low major schools considering what KU already has on tge schedule for next season.

I'm not talking about international trip in the regular sense, but in the eyes of the NCAA since teams can only do an international trip once every 4 years. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory, does the NCAA view this the once every 4 years international trip or not because that's relevant.

@jayballer67 gotta remember KJ was boxing out the opposing big men on every team so they wouldn't get the rebound. Which is why you saw our trio of wings rebound so well. That overwhelming big man KJ was assigned to will have to box out Hunter to keep him from getting his 10 rebounds a game. Which will completely allow KJ to rebound at a much higher rate with his elite athleticism and IQ.
Sorry, but KJ will never be a good rebounder. Arms are too short which is part of why his body looks so weird.

T-Rob was 7-14 his senior year so while a high volume, if left alone he was a capable outside shooter.

Udeh was the 6-11 guy who’d block shots (often get way out of position and whiff as well) and throw down some lobs.
Zuby may have rebounded better but Udeh had some quick hands getting steals at the top on switches a few times.
I will say this - it DID seem like he came up with more steals from a guy that size that you wouldn't think about. - -I really hate to lose either one of these guys though is they both 4 year players, and w have seen thee types develop before into pretty solid payers - -( umm does Azulbuike ring a bell lol- - McCormack ? ) -- I know like some have said I GUESS it's a business but these are suck likeable guys.
Kida wonder with all these transferring out - -and then guys who really didn't want to leave it seems ( Cuffe ) - kinda pushed out , just wonder some where down the line this doesn't come back and bite us in the ass
The long term issue with having both Ejiofor and Udeh is they play the same position, amd were in the same class. One would eventually transfer out anyway over a lack of playing time. This is why coach generally like have their depth staggered in regards to player at the same position as opposed to two guys in the same class like we have with these two.
Back to the original purpose of this thread. New line up with Hunter Dickinson involved now for me would be:
Starters
G: Harris
G: Morris
G: Timberlake
F: KJ Adams
C: Dickinson
Bench Rotation
G: Jackson
F: Marcus Adams
F: Udeh/Ejiofor

@Texas-Hawk-10 I dunno, the eye test sure tells me Udeh is better than Zuby. Stats can be misleading sometimes and this might be one of those times. Consider this, a lot of Zuby's minutes were early season against non-con schedule, some much easier opponents there that skew the numbers. 7 Rebs against ND St, 5 against Texas So. He did have 5 rebs against Duke which is great but also two TOs. Udeh logged 4 Blocks that Duke game! Many of Udeh's minutes were in the heart of conference schedule and much tougher competition.
The eye test also tells me that Zuby was getting the back up 5 minutes ahead of Udeh before he hurt his foot. Zuby's best overall game of the season came against Indiana and Trayce Jackson-Davis who was a consensus 1st team All-American last season. His second best overall game was against OSU in the Big 12 opener.
A lot of Zuby's advanced numbers on defense are very comparable to what Doke did as a freshman. One thing that Zuby has that's not an easily teachable trait is instincts and Zuby was light years ahead of Udeh as far as defensive instincts go.
@kuballin10 said in Off-season starting lineup ever changing thread:

Zuby may have rebounded better but Udeh had some quick hands getting steals at the top on switches a few times.
Zuby had a block rate of 12.5% while Udeh was 7.7% so no, I'm not getting them confused. Udeh may have made more highlight level plays than Zuby, but Zuby is much more consistent and sound on that end of the floor than Udeh is. Udeh is a flashier player no doubt, but big men like home haven't necessarily torn the house down with scoring. Doke never averaged more than 13.7 ppg. Zuby can be a guy that can average a double-double by his senior season, I don't see Udeh ever being that type of player because of his rebounding.
This is a big damn deal landing Dickinson. I've said from the moment Kansas was attached to Hunter that Self can make him a NPOY and he can make KU a national title contender. He might even be preseason NPOY this year. He can potentially have a season where he puts up senior year Wayne Simien numbers (20 and 11).
Dickinson allows Self to slide KJ to the 4 spot so we can still have Dejuan and KJ anchoring the defense which means KU should still be a solid to good defense. I would expect Self to play defense like the 2022 team with Dave in the middle because that's comparable to what Dockinson is on defense.
@wissox said in Hunter Dickenson is a Jayhawk:
@stoptheflop I'll start. Hunter is a dick.
But he's our dick now.
My personal preference if KU is indeed going to lose either Zuby or Udeh is to lose Udeh. I think he has the lower ceiling of the two. In his limited minutes, Zuby put up dominant rebounding numbers whereas Udeh was a below average rebounder, not as bad as KJ, not not that much better either. Zuby was also the much better shot blocker than Udeh was.
Udeh was a little ahead of Zuby offensively, but Zuby wasn't bad at 65% from the field and was better at the FT line, although both were bad at the FT last season.
Personally, I think Zuby is the better overall prospect and has the higher ceiling between he and Udeh and my personal choice would be to keep Zuby and let Udeh find somewhere else if it comes to that.
@jayballer67 said in Off-season starting lineup ever changing thread:

@BShark I really think the KJ/Marcus combo is going to be just fine. KJ did average almost 11 a game last season... How often do players take a major step back scoring?
Your moving KJ a lot further out on the court -he not gonna be just getting lobs or little bank shots. He is going to have to develop some kind of mid range jumper to play a four, and at this point -- He doesn't have it. Sure he took a few outside J's last year with luke warm success at best, unless he works really hard , bust his ass in the off season I can't see how he can possibly play an effective 4. -His scoring at this point with his current shot he will not be able to get it done - Defense will back off him until he can prove he is capable of dropping the outside J. -We better hope we have better answer
If KU lands Dickinson, KJ will be fine offensively because Dickinson can step out and hit 3's and you could basically run Dickinson as the 4 and KJ at the 5 on offense because Dickinson does have 3 point range.
If KU doesn't land Dickinson and Self has to go with a combination of KJ/Udeh/Ejiofor at the 4/5 spots, we'll probably see some sets we haven't seen out of Self in years including quite a bit of hi/lo action. I would look at what sets the 2008 team ran when Russell Robinson and Darrell Arthur were in the the game because Robinson was a pass first PG like Harris amd Arthur only took 12 3's all season.
No KU players drafted this year, but 3 that have signed FA deals. Lonnie Phelps to the Cleveland Browns, Earl Bostick to the Dallas Cowboys, and Caleb Sampson to the Indianapolis Colts.

The NFL Draft is one of the biggest media coverage events in the U.S. so there's going to be a lot more attention on the draft this weekend. Guys that cover college basketball that have a major issue with this aren't going to simply fire off a tweet and be done with it. Well, at least one fan agrees with you. I don't understand this, not only from an optics perspective, but also in terms of talent and fit. Put aside the personal stuff. Exactly what did he show at UT which suggests he should be a Jayhawk? As down as I've been on Spears, I would have taken him over Morris (although alternatives would have been my preference). I assume the Spears visit is now a waste of time? We don't need a 5th (or 6th if you include Cluffe) 6-4 guard or smaller. I thought HCBS said we needed some size and athleticism, in addition to someone who could make treys?
Really, can't KU do better than this???
Morris was ranked 16th in the 2022 class by 24/7 and has a huge upside of talent. I assume him committing means he is willing to play off the ball otherwise he'll play about 10 mpg here the next two seasons. He's also an infinitely better defender than Spears. On the court, Morris is a much higher ceiling player than Spears is. Off the court, we're just going to have to trust that Self and staff have done their homework on his issues and are comfortable with bringing Morris in.
I'm also very curious what the starting line up is going to be now because Self doesn't have a true 3 at this point. Does Self start Timberlake at the 3 now or is Marcus Adams going to be in that spot?

Prime told TE Zachery Courtney he wanted him out , transfer- - and yet when Zachery wanted some of his film to be able to show his high lights , Prime Time would not allow him access to his practice film so other possible landing spots could see his work.
Now Prime time even has players that played for him at Jackson State * transferred and followed him to Colorado - -He has former Jackson State players that came behind him even THEY are Transferring out of Colorado - Like the publisher said that this feels like more of a potential RED FLAG- -I think Prime Time has no clue what the hell-- this AFTER he told Colorado players that he was brining his players - now they transferring out
Colorado last year might have actually been worse than our any of our 2015-2017 teams. Other than their OT win against Cal, they only played 1 other game within 25 points of the other team. Colorado last year was historically bad.
I don't blame Deion from running those players off with the portal as a way to rebuild depth quickly now. Who cares if he ran off their best receiver last season, Jordyn Tyson had 22 catches for 470 yards and 4 TD's last season and that was their leading receiver. Travis Hunter probably tops all three of those numbers by the midpoint of next season and probably tops the receptions number by game 3 and the TD's by game 4.
Will Colorado make a bowl game this season? Probably not. Will they be within 25 points of their opponents more than twice this season? Absolutely. Will they win more than 1 game next season? Yes.
Again , like the publisher said - - When you are getting players that followed you from Jackson State that you wanted - - NOW they are leaving you too - -More a RED SIGNAL SIGN then any thing else - -really bad look
Those players are finding out that with a move to a P5 school, there's higher expectations than at an FCS school and Deion isn't keeping players who don't meet that expectation. Deion's job is to win football games for Colorado now, and if players chose to follow him from JSU to CU and weren't good enough, he's not lowering tge bar because that's how Colorado got to be 2015-2017 Kansas levels of bad last season under the old staff.

With sooo many moving parts, I thought it would be entertaining to predict potential starting lineups — with ONLY guys on the current roster. No cheating and inserting Hunter until if and when he signs on the dotted line! :)
Mine:
PG: Dajuan Harris
SG/CG: Elmarko Jackson
SG/CG: Chris Johnson or whichever freshman stands out
Wing-ish: KJ Adams
Center: Ernest Udeh
Analysis: there is basically zero 3 pt shooting skill in this mix of players. That’s an issue. From what I’m reading about Elmarko, he’s going to have a big learning curve playing without being ball dominant. There are some downhill players in the mix though. That’s good. And I don’t love that mix of KJ and Udeh. I’d prefer a four out rotation.
Nothing about KJ's game is a wing other than his size.
As of today, KU has Dejuan Harris, Kyle Cuffe, KJ Adams, Ernest Udeh, and Zuby Ejiofor as returning players. They have Elmarko Jackson, Chris Johnson, Marcus Adams, Jamari McDowell as incoming freshmen and Nicholas Timberlake as an incoming transfer for the new players.
With that group, right now, I'd go with Harris, Timberlake, Marcus Adams, KJ Adams, and Ernest Udeh for my starting 5. I'd rather have Jackson off the bench so he can spell Harris and gradually learn to play off the ball without that being his primary role. You'd still have Cuffe in an emergency at PG. Johnson and McDowell would then primarily sub at the 2 and 3 spots. Michael Jankovich could also in theory play that spot in a pinch. That leaves Zuby as the lone big off the bench.
As of today, this is a team that would probably do well to finish in the middle of the Big 12.
@DCHawker said in Should KU Even Bother Fielding a Basketball team next year?:
@Texas-Hawk-10 Fair enough. Some decent bigger wings, but not really 4s. Is there a reason Knect/CSU, Cleveland/FSU, Hart/MD haven't been in the mix? I get the love for Dickinson, but we got 12-13 ppg from the 5 spot last year and would think that would improve at least some with additional experience. We have to replace our 3 leading scorers (45 ppg) and 3 leading rebounders. Even if we get Dickinson, who plays on the wings - 3 and 4? Juan, Timberlake and Elmarko for 3 spots? That's pretty small. One of the other freshmen in the starting rotation? Just not sure where the points and rebounds come from if Dickinson doesn't work out.
Knecht and Hart both ended up at Tennessee because Self was trying to land Ingram. Hart isn’t someone to count on as a leading scorer anyway based on his 4 years at Maryland.
Counting on someone from a low major to come in and be a leading scorer at a high level P5 is a risky proposition and Tennessee is returning a lot of their players and not expecting Knetch to carry the scoring load the way he would need to here. Cleveland has pretty much been an Auburn lock since he announced he was entering the portal.
KU got decent scoring out of Adams and Udeh last season, but KJ can't rebound and Udeh is an average rebounder. How many of KU's losses last season were connected to the opponents offensive rebounding? Dickinson fixes that KU's rebounding issues as well because your 4 and 3 should not be your leading rebounders.
Hunter Dickinson is the focal point of recruiting right now for Self because he addresses a lot of KU's current issues and if Self misses on this, KU might be in some trouble next season because it'll be a wait amd see game with players withdrawing from the draft and entering the portal at that point.

@approxinfinity said in Should KU Even Bother Fielding a Basketball team next year?:
You know what. Im gonna assume Bill got this.
Probably a decent bet, but it seems like he is trying to draw to an inside straight. 26 of the top 35 transfers per 247sports have landed. Zags had 3 specific needs and met all 3. A lot of other teams have picked up at least 2 quality transfers. Conference foes are loading up. It seems like everything is hinging on Dickinson, when the 5 spot isn't our primary need. I'm more than fine with the trio we have. What we most need is a 4 who can score some, rebound and defend. And, unless one of the freshmen over delivers, we don't have anyone on the roster who can create their own shot.
What you're describing isn't in the portal. There isn't a proven, high scoring P5 level 4 in the portal as of now and there's no guarantee of one being in there once players withdraw from the draft. This is why the staff is so hard after Dickinson, he's a proven 18 and 9 player because he's done that at Michigan the past 2 seasons.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Internet isn’t really an issue anymore in rural areas. My town of 600 people has fiber optic as do most in this area. My wife worked from home on a computer all day for 2 years during the pandemic. Her parents live 10 miles from anything and have fiber optic. I could see it being more of an issue back when you were younger tho. I hate living in the city personally, sirens, bass from cars and gunshots occasionally all hours day and night. Would never choose to raise my kids in such an environment. Small towns are being destroyed by Meth more than anything IMO. It’s too easy to make and sell. Mayberry has been dead for a good 20 years. I like my community pretty well and stuff like that is at a minimum.
There's still plenty of rural areas where low internet speeds are still an issue. I know Google used Topeka as a test area for their fiber optics and that's spread to other small towns in the area. I also know there are some small towns that have co-oped their ISP to install fiber optic lines, but that's not everywhere and there are still a lot of people and places that don't have fiber optic lines or the resources to get them installed yet.
You're also supporting my statement about where people prefer to live. A person that grew up or has lived in a small town most of their life may not adapt well to living in a city and there'snothing wrong with that. I personally would be bored out of mind living in a small town because of the lack options on things to do, different styles of food, and stuff like that.

My first summer as a "professional" I spent half on Capitol Hill, half on the family farm. Variety is the spice of life, as they say.
Some country folks are responsible for the urbanization as well. My folks always told me to go get a college education and a nice, cushy job because they worked so hard so I wouldn't have to. I'm not sure if I've changed or the community has (probably a little of both), but it seems the rural communities have gotten coarser and less friendly over the last 10ish years. Church attendance is down, even as a % of the population. Crime is up, poverty is up. Kind of a sad deal that there's not much in the way of redeeming qualities for my home community other than nostalgia. Well, I guess the new owners of the grocery store are doing some good stuff (we got Boulevard and Free State beer in a town of 160!) but the overall decline in population and quality of life out there makes me sad. I was hoping a silver lining of the pandemic would be more people who all the sudden aren't geographically tethered to work would move back to take advantage of the cost of living. For example, we rent my grandma's old house (small, but nice 3 BR) for $250/month UTILITIES INCLUDED. But a lot of the charm is sadly gone.
A lot of rural communities still don't have good enough internet for people to do WFH jobs. Even with a lower cost of living, they along with not having a lot of creature comforts do dissuade people from moving to small towns.
I grew up in a major city, amd when I was choosing where to go, my final 3 choices were Kansas, KSU, and Oklahoma. My mom's family were split between KU and KSU alums and my dad was an OU alum. When I was deciding what was important for what I wanted out of a college experience, being in or near a major city was important to me because I get bored with small town life really quickly which I realized whenever I visited my mom's family in SE Kansas. That ruled KSU out and left me between KU and OU. I ended up choosing KU because of getting more scholarship money from KU, but I absolutely would've gone to OU had they given me more scholarship money.
If someone is accustomed to a big city, urban lifestyle, moving to a small rural community isn't going to ve enjoyable to many people in that situation. I would also assume it tends to go the other way as well where most people who grew up in a small town hate living in a big city and would prefer to be in a small town.

I see it the opposite. The Texas techs of the world are just farm teams for the haves. KU is a have, so f’em is the attitude. Who desires a level field when you’re on top? KU basketball will be just fine. The field? TBD
How has Kentucky done in the Transfer Portal Era though? Calipari has largely struggled to maintain where he had Kentucky during the OAD era. Coach K had early struggles with the Portal Era before getting it right his last season. Roy retired partly because he didn't think he could adapt to the Portal Era. It remains to be seen if Self can consistently challenge for national titles in this era. Even 2022 wasn't smooth in regards to Remy, and KU had some good luck in regards to tournament match ups. Last year certainly wasn't smooth either so we'll see how well Self can construct this roster next season and how successful the team will be.
Former Self assistant Jerrance Howard has taken an assistant coaching position at Southern Illinois after taking a year off where there was speculation he might become an agent.
Don't know if this got posted elsewhere, but MJ Rice ended up at NC State.
Give me about 8 ppg with 38% from 3 and I'll be happy with Timberlake. He's not a good defender so don't expect much on that end from him, but not a bad pick up as tge guy you can kick it out to and expect him to make an open shot.
