Bill Self Emperor of Kansas • Apr 02, 2021 03:20 PM

@Kcmatt7 said in Bill Self Emperor of Kansas:

Just commission his statue already. The man will have been the coach here for over 2 decades when it is all said and done.

He won't coach to 74 - but if he did just so everyone knows - he would pass K for all-time wins at his current pace. I swear I think it is part of the reason K keeps coaching.

Depends on where Coach K ends up whenever he retires. Let's say Self stays until 74, that's 16 more years and at an average 25 wins per year (that's conservative considering he's averaged 29 wins per year in his 18 years here), that would give him 400 more wins putting him at 1129 wins. Coach K is already at 1170 for his career. I don't know where Coach K ends up, over 1200 seems very likely, I don't see Self catching Coach K. Even if Self kept up the average of 29 wins per year for the next 16 years, it'd put him at 1194 and who knows where Coach K is going to end up at whenever he decides to retire.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Apr 02, 2021 02:36 PM

KU has one spot open as of now. We've got a PG and a big man. The current focus has to be a starting caliber 2/3 that can shoot from deep so Braun can go back to a 6th man role that he's perfect for.

@FarmerJayhawk yeah sure w/e GIVE ME ADAM MILLER SNACKS

Snacks betta be on this

Why? We need players who can shoot and that's not Adam Miller. He's a high volume shooter that only shot 34% from the field in Big 10 games and 32% from 3 which was the majority of his shot attempts. His PER was 6.3 in Big 10 and sub 10 for the year. This kid is combination of the worst attributes of Christian Braun and TGF. Shot worse than Braun did this year and like TGF, once the ball reached Miller, it wasn't leaving his hands.

Adam Miller is a terrible fit for Bill Self's system and for what Self is trying to accomplish in recruiting/transfers this year.

NBA Draft Entrants • Apr 02, 2021 12:29 AM

Unsurprising but Cade Cunningham also declared today officially.

Coaching Search/AD Thread • Apr 01, 2021 11:28 PM

@jayballer67 Even when the new AD gets hired, there's not a great reason to hire a new coach after spring practice is done. The quality of the staff wouldn't be great because most assistant coaches aren't leaving their job during the summer. You wreck multiple recruiting classes because you lose a lot of recent recruits and start off way behind in 2022 recruiting.

Whoever the new AD is needs to let Jones coach this season, then reevaluate after the season. If Jones struggles early, then recruits can wait to see who the next coach is. The current players could be less likely to transfer out because the guy they wanted was given a fair shot at the job so there's going to be more acceptance of the whatever the outcome is next season.

The curious case of Christian Braun • Apr 01, 2021 06:49 PM

There's a reason Ochainwas rated as low as he was and it's because of his skill level. Agbaji is probably the best athlete on the team but one of the lowest basketball IQ's as well.

Jalen Wilson will return • Apr 01, 2021 06:45 PM

@Kcmatt7 said in Jalen Wilson will return:

Serious question - do we think he is able to guard 3s? Like could we go big some stretches next season? Would be interested to see what a lineup with him, Martin and Dave could do. Should be able to rebound well. Can still space the floor for Dave to do work, but you have an additional rebounder in there to make up for how poorly Dave rebounds for his size.

Defense would be all time levels of bad with that combination on the floor at the same time. Martin is less agile than Dave and Wilson cannot guard wings because he can't guard stretch 4's. Teams would actually have to miss shots for rebounding to matter and that line up wouldn't force many missed shots.

Roy calls it quits. • Apr 01, 2021 06:33 PM

I'd love to see Roy come back to KU for some type of special tribute next season so the KU faithful to honor him as well.

Beard to Texas • Apr 01, 2021 06:31 PM

Texas is likely going to be returning to the status level they had during the early and mid 2000's when Barnes was at his peak and KU-Texas was always must see TV because it was usually a top 10 match up.

With Nike recruiting money behind him, Beard is going to win a national title at some point with Texas.

Former Jayhawk Evan Manning is currently a Graduate Assistant for Mark Few at Gonzaga if anyone wants a reason to justify cheering for Gonzaga.

Bye Muscadin • Mar 31, 2021 10:41 PM

@bmensch Sydney Curry is an athletic freak. His biggest issue is needing a year in the weight room to slim down. KU's current situation at the 5 spot is perfect for Curry because he doesn't have to be a major contributor this year. He can play spot minutes while working on his body and step into a bigger role in 2022-23.

Bill Self's stated goal is to get more athletic next year. You don't do that by getting rid of Sydney Curry.

The future Backcourt • Mar 31, 2021 08:50 PM

Creighton is in the same conference as Villanova, UConn, and Georgetownbwhich are all programs that can recruit top 50 talent with relative ease. Creighton elevating their recruiting shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Same deal with Wichita St. being able to recruit a different caliber of player once they moved to the AAC.

Gonzaga • Mar 30, 2021 06:57 PM

Of the 5 teams left besides Gonzaga. UCLA has the worst chance at beating Gonzaga because they're the worst combination of defense and offense. USC and Houston are next because both are good enough defensively to slow down Gonzaga and hold them below 80, but neither is going enough offensively to outscore Gonzaga. Michigan has the 2 nd best chance because they're a good offense and defense, but not elite at either one. Baylor has the best chance because they are good enough defensively to hold Gonzaga in the 70's and Baylor is the 2nd best offensive team left in the tournament and is the best 3 point shooting team in the country so they have the ability to outscore Gonzaga.

At the end of the day, I still think Gonzaga wins it all.

Goodbye Enaruna • Mar 30, 2021 06:33 PM

I wonder about Tristan's passion for basketball. It always seemed like his work ethic was always the biggest thing Self mentioned about holding Enaruna back from becoming a star player and that's something that could be a result of just not being passionate about the game.

Guaranteed to have an old SWC match up in the Final Four which is crazy because the SWC was never known as a basketball conference.

The state of Texas also looking for only its second ever national title in college basketball.

Houston going to their first Final Four since 1984.

Today's Games Thread • Mar 30, 2021 01:09 AM

UH's offensive rebounding is the only reason why Houston isn't down double digits right now.

@wissox Not so fast on that one although UH is who I'm pulling for at this point.

Bye Tyon • Mar 29, 2021 07:00 PM

TGF should be a good fit at the mid major level. He is a great athlete, but the skill level just isn't there to produce at a place like Kansas.

Bill Self and who he's lost to. • Mar 29, 2021 04:24 AM

@wissox said in Bill Self and who he's lost to.:

@Texas-Hawk-10 Losing to Michigan in 2013 which was semi robbed out of a championship? I'd argue they were better too. Villanova was clearly the better team in 2018, right?

But, and this I think was true during Roys tenure as well, when you lose to a team that reaches the pinnacle of the sport it's not necessarily a bad loss. If we kept losing to teams like Bradley and Bucknell then Bill is a March choker.

Do you think 1997 was a failure? Fantastic team for sure that happened to lose to the national champion. 2003 was more of a failure I think because of the missed FT's hid the fact that we were clearly better than Carmelo and Syracuse.

KU was better than Michigan in 2013. KU had a double digit lead with about 2 minutes left and pulled an epic choke job that game.

1997 was a much bigger failure to me because KU was the best team in the country that year. Syracuse was pretty evenly match with Kansas in 2003 so I don't view that game as a bad loss in that KU wasn't a definitively superior team like they were in 1997.

To me, whatever the team that beats KU does the rest of the tournament isn't relevant to whether it's a bad loss or not. The biggest tournament failures of the past 25 years to me in order are 1997, 2010, 2011, 2017, and 2013 in that order because those first 3 were all teams that should've won national championships and didn't

Bill Self and who he's lost to. • Mar 29, 2021 01:42 AM

@wissox A big reason why a lot of those losses are considered bad losses by the majority is because KU was the better team in all but 3, and I would argue 5 seasons. Indisputably, Michigan St. in 2009 was better than Kansas, Kentucky in 2012 was better than Kansas, and Villanova in 2018 was better than Kansas. I would also personally argue that UCLA in 2007 and Villanova in 2016 were better teams than KU, but I realize not everyone agrees with those takes.

Gonzaga • Mar 28, 2021 08:40 PM

Baylor is the only team equipped to beat Gonzaga this year. Baylor's defense is good enough to slow down Gonzaga's offense and keep them in the 70's and Baylor shoots the ball well enough that they can outscore most teams including Gonzaga on a good shooting day because Gonzaga isn't a great defensive team.

Baylor has been the one team all year that could match up with Gonzaga and why many people were disappointed we didn't get the scheduled game between the two tes earlier this season.

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Mar 28, 2021 12:47 PM

@jayballer67 The buyout information is incorrect. Beard's buyout is currently $5 million and drops to $4 million on April 1.

Beard's buyout isn't going to be the issue for Texas since they didn't fire Shaka and have to pay a buyout for him, but annual salary might be an issue as Texas would have to pay Beard more money per year than they're paying Sarkisian.

If Beard ultimately chooses to stay in Lubbock (it is a possibility), other names to look out for are Dana Altman (Oregon), Eric Musselman (Arkansas), John Beilein, and former player and current Brooklyn Nets assistant Royal Ivey.

Today's Games Thread • Mar 28, 2021 02:23 AM

@approxinfinity Bigger reason was rebounding. Arkansas grabbed 18 offensive rebounds. This was basically a repeat of their first game, just a closer final margin.

Arkansas holds off ORU by 2. ORU had a great look from 3 for the win, but it rimmed out.

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Mar 27, 2021 04:33 PM

@jayballer67 Beard with Nike money behind would far exceed what he can currently get at Tech with UA money. We all saw what Rick Barnes could do when UT was at their peak in the 2000's and that was a top 10 program winning Big 12 titles, contending for national titles, and sending a crap load of players to the NBA that far exceeded anything KU players of the era accomplished in the NBA. Beard in Austin means Texas will start getting KD and LaMarcus Aldridge caliber players on a regular basis again.

Chris Beard is definitely going to consider whatever offer UT puts on the table.

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Mar 27, 2021 02:35 PM

@BeddieKU23 Are referring to when he was coach at UNLV for a few days then Tech offered him their job?

Beard is a UT grad and got his coaching start their under Tom Lenders. That's why Beard's name is connected to Texas.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Mar 27, 2021 11:47 AM

Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach • Mar 27, 2021 01:44 AM

Sounds like Beard is going to be UT's top target, but if an agreement is reached, wouldn't happen until next Thursday at the earliest because Beard's buyout drops to $4 million if he goes to another Big 12 school.

Spring Football • Mar 27, 2021 01:39 AM

KU needs as much help as possible at QB. Having as many options as possible at QB is not a bad thing.

We also don't know the long term future of any of the QB's on the roster now. Whenever KU hires their new coach, we don't know who's going to be a fit or not in a new system.

Have you not seen KU's QB play the past 11 years? Why would you not want as much competition as possible at a position KU's gotten basically no production from in over a decade?

Next year... Sophomore Wilson, Senior Big Dave... that's one dog and one anchor for next year. A rim protector would be great, but Dave will do. I'm fine with an amped up Harris at point... more of an attack guy would be better of course. If Och, Braun and Bryce can't find a beast mode, then find better players

Bryce has a ways to go, but I believe he will improve. If we add the right guys, I wouldn't mind seeing Braun go to the bench.

Something like...

Tyson Walker

MYSTERY TWO GUARD (pref a 4th or 5th year guy)

Ochai

Jalen

Dave

Then you have a real ass bench with Harris, CB and whoever ends up 8th in the rotation.

So you don't think Bryce ends up in the rotation next year? He's likely the starter at the 2 next year because he's has most of what Self covets at the 2. A combo that can handle the ball and get his own shot. Bryce Thompson is why getting a second guard to transfer in is going to be difficult for KU unless that person is fine coming off the bench.

People have been wanting Self to focus on 25-150 players for years and this is what happens when you recruit in that neighborhood. You end up with flawed players and a flawed team.
