@jaybate-1.0 so the first step is determining what we would like the NCAA to be and do, and step two is to hit social media hard and demand justice right? Isn't this how it works in today's America? Should we start tweeting the hell out of #ncaa #shoeco #corruption #basketball ?

Pitino's Backup Plan... • Sep 28, 2017 02:30 AM

@jaybate-1.0 lol well I always felt a little two-faced rooting for Frank Martin given his sordid past. If there's a laundry list of offenses under his watch I'll happily feel whole while loathing him.

Jaybate This Is Your Day • Sep 28, 2017 02:24 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I didn't mean football. That's a lot more equipment... I mean, until the other (football) shoe falls.

Jaybate This Is Your Day • Sep 28, 2017 02:23 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I'm pretty sure there are a few other sports apparel companies that would gladly take on ncaam contracts?

Jaybate This Is Your Day • Sep 28, 2017 02:09 AM

For these implicated programs, hopefully this opportunity to clean house thoroughly is not wasted. Also, I think this is an opportunity for the NCAA to reassert itself and find a new identity amidst the ashes of moral bankruptcy. Maybe they could start by banning Nike, Adidas and Under Armour from sponsoring any college teams. Can they do that?

Alex Smith interview • Sep 27, 2017 03:05 AM

Stumbled upon an interview of Alex Smith on my local sports network. Was interesting to me and I don't really follow the Chiefs.

I thought it was cool that part of his workout rituals involve snorkeling and carrying giant rocks as he walks around on the bottom of the sea.

I think we are entering a new era of political and social activism, strong watchdogs and legal oversight. Everyone wants to drain swamps these days. I wonder if NCAA basketball was Obama's targeted swamp, and this investigation a parting gift to the integrity of the game he loves. Unfortunately, Nike's admirals are yesterday's pirates.

@jaybate-1-0 has been talking about this for over three years. You get to thinking it's just there, part of the background, never gonna change. Wow.

Brady an Assistant Coach • Sep 24, 2017 01:50 AM

@RockChalkinTexas Nice! I'm glad he stayed in the game. Anyone who can start at Kansas for BS and cause half the fanbase to go into fits about whether he deserves to be on the floor b/c they don't think his savvy overcomes his athleticism... well that guy is probably one smart cookie that probably would make a fine coach some day :)

Thomas Robinson to Russia • Sep 24, 2017 01:45 AM

@kjayhawks probably not, but 26 still isn't old. I think the problem is his skillset isn't as highly coveted as it used to be. Everyone wants to have a floor full of scorers with range, not an elite rebounder who is an average defender and can't shoot from outside.

Whiff City • Sep 22, 2017 10:30 PM

@RockkChalkk interesting question about fear of commitment in guards vs big men when in situations that involve competition. Maybe guards need to start to be seen and drafted while bigs can be drafted on height and athleticism alone, regardless of PT?

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/20777150/inside-signature-sneaker-race-giannis-antetokounmpos-nba ↗

Adidas made sure to mention several times that just this week it overtook Jordan brand as the No. 2 sneaker in the United States. The pitch projected how Adidas and Antetokounmpo could make even more progress both in the U.S. and globally, as the brand aims to continue its momentum in footwear by also rising in the basketball category.

@BeddieKU23 one more indicator that at some point this season, be it through injury, fatigue, or foul trouble to one of our two legit big boys, we will be all in with the 4 guard lineup again.

@BeddieKU23 hmm! Let's hope. That could be huge for him on both ends of the court; would love to see him not get torched as much when on ball. And rebounding he's always had the size but not the quick recovery and secondary hops. Would love to see that speed make him a plus rebounder if possible.

@DoubleDD can you please leave politics out of topics where they don't belong?

Is Breitbart a legitimate news site? • Sep 16, 2017 09:24 PM

@approxinfinity actually. You know what it's not just @globaljaybird . I know anti Trump people are disappointed with our direction right now. It might feel like the sky is falling but please. If you cant keep a level head in these times, take a walk grab some fresh air and find a better angle. That goes for me too.

Is Breitbart a legitimate news site? • Sep 16, 2017 09:15 PM

@globaljaybird your post is making me realize that today's political dysfunction and inability to compromise has been generations in the making because of our unwillingness to talk, instead harboring and hardening our ideas that have been cultivated to be diametrically opposed to the perceived opposition. Let's hope future generations are much better talking to people whose ideas differ without getting hot under the collar, or we are all doomed.

Again, there's no reason to sit in this category and complain about how the board is ruined. This section is easily ignored. Anyone losing their head in here should reevaluate the category rules and calm down or kindly see their way out of the category until they feel they are capable of maintaining their cool. I'm looking at you @globaljaybird.

Locking thread.

Is Breitbart a legitimate news site? • Sep 16, 2017 03:06 AM

@DoubleDD ESPN is liberal. Schilling is a inflammatory douchebag and shouldn't be on ESPN, regardless, imo. Nobody is stopping you from parenting as carefully as you want. I haven't followed this thread closely. Not sure what we were talking about with Hillary / Benghazi.

Is Breitbart a legitimate news site? • Sep 16, 2017 02:24 AM

@globaljaybird @MoonwalkMafia If you have a preconceived notion that sports and politics shouldn't meet, then there's absolutely no reason you can't and shouldn't block the politics section. I think anyone would respect that. But this category is attempting to find a discussion grounded in reality, something that I think is important and healthy. Because a person says something personal occasionally when they get riled up (and might not mean to say if they weren't fired up) doesn't make the politics section a failure. To me, it reiterates the importance of having an avenue for open dialogue like this, to keep people grounded and engaged and finding middle ground. What's better, people saying something, talking it out and getting back to reality, or keeping it bottled up with no avenue to express it?

And hasn't the sports topics gotten personal occasionally as well? Should we not talk about KU because we're all passionate and opinionated about it?

In todays inflammatory times, I think it is important not only to reject wild extremism when you encounter it, but celebrate a reasonable position, even (or maybe especially) when it differs from yours.

@DoubleDD if there is a legit reason to believe a charity isn't on the up and up, its worth mentioning.

I don't think people were out of line refuting the validity of your source. you got called nuts a couple times. Maybe we could have done without that. But I do have a question though; if you were grilling and drinking and then invited your friends with a liberal lean over when you were feeling it and started going off about this charity would you expect them to not rib you a bit in person? Nothing here seems to be unfriendly? This feels like an internet problem, same kind of thing that happens on Facebook. Internet is a soap box and a megaphone, and so in this situation in order that a government might govern best that governs least, it requires a greater degree of self moderation. Maybe a 2 beer limit of posting something political or something? :) Cheers buddy.

Also, please don't ask me to censor something you can censor yourself. I'm on vacation. GIBTGL!

@jaybate-1-0 your exploration of under reported histories might have encountered some insights on this one?

The Seas of Tripoli • Aug 31, 2017 02:55 PM

Having a discussion here about the US war against the Barbary Pirates. In several texts I read, including Wikipedia, there seemed to be an omission of the fact that the American ships that were being intercepted would have likely carried slaves back from Africa to the New World. Conversely, the fact that American sailors were enslaved by the pirates was not omitted. The interception of slave vessels by the pirates paints a different picture of everything, I think. We were paying the pirates 1 million USD per year before sending war vessels to disrupt the pirates. That was 10% of American revenue in 1800. What I find interesting is that prior to 1813 we had no federal income tax. Tax on imports was our primary source of income. After the tarriff act of 1789, we were taking an average of 20% tax on imports. This number varied per import. The importation of slaves to the US was banned in 1807. I believe approx 389k slaves made it to the US, while approx 12 million were shipped to the New World and approx 2 million died in transit, so I assume approx 500k were shipped to the US. My question at this point is: how dependant upon the taxation of the slave import for federal income was the US government between the years of 1789 and 1807? And more granularly, how much was the tarriff on slaves in particular and how many slaves were sent to the US during this taxable period, and also were any ventures dealing with slaves sent elsewhere in the New World subject to this import tax (presumably no on that one, just wondering)?

Alright. Let's just shut it down. I think the points have been made.

I only cursorily skimmed this just now, and don't have time for a full investigation. It seems the point has been made scrutinizing the viability of charities, so I am appointing you @DoubleDD as being in charge of a brisk clean up effort for this thread, to lead the charge in shaking hands, dropping snark without anyone getting one last jab in, and moving on to less contentious material, or I'm afraid this thread may be lost.
