Silence of the flock • Oct 16, 2021 03:11 PM

@Marco yeah going to be honest that he’s a big unknown for me. I would imagine he will get some minutes early to see how it goes but I’d imagine he has a pretty short leash. Self has adjusted to playing small over the last few years and has seemed willing to put more guards on the floor if that’s where the talent is.

Obviously Dave isn’t playing 40 minutes a game so someone has to get some of those minutes but I’m not plugged in enough on the new guys to really guess who that’d be.

Silence of the flock • Oct 16, 2021 02:48 PM

He will certainly get minutes and was a highly coveted talent. But tbh I just haven’t watched enough of him to know whether he is truly a Self style guard. Just looking at stats, the 1 foul per game is something that stood out to be as a possible issue as that could indicate a lack of physicality on the defensive end but again, not an expert on Martin so I’m in wait and see mode on him. Hasn’t he been hurt this off season?

Silence of the flock • Oct 16, 2021 02:05 PM

@drgnslayr The real question is ALWAYS how will a team deal with adversity. Someone will get hurt, we may lose some games we weren’t supposed to, distractions happen. Seems like this year we could have the talent. If that shapes up to be true then it’s just about gelling and taking on each challenge as it comes.

I still worry about Dave as a legit leader and reliable advantage each game. I just don’t see how his mobility increases to the point where he is definitely better than most of the guys he goes up against.

I’m also concerned, as others mentioned, about the transfers fitting in to Self’s system. It traditionally taken time for most to adjust and freedom and creativity are not always at the top of the list of skills rewarded with playing time and trust from the head coach.

Totally agree that a systematic use of a press is a pipe dream. A trapping press just isn’t how self sees basketball working. What I do see is guards picking up there man nearly full court but especially 3/4 court. Harris in particular is a proven ball hawk and can at least cause some stress on opposing guards as they simply try to bring the ball up the court. If Harris can find a partner in creating havoc it could be a fun year. It’s really too bad he and Garrett couldn’t muster enough offensive threats to play A LOT together to build that kind of chemistry. Remember, Mario couldn’t have made all those steals and been in all those passing lanes without russ rob adding pressure. In this same subject, Dave’s defense needs to take a step forward (which it started to last year) so that the guards can have some freedom to gamble knowing if they miss it’s not an auto bucket.

Basically I still see this season going as Dave goes and that makes me nervous. Hopeful, but nervous.

@drgnslayr Throw in the amount of unprocessed grief and trauma for just enduring the last year and a half while many seem to just be going about there business as if everything is back to normal...

I haven’t pulled the stats to see how many unique visitors we have. I’m sure its down a little, but we will see come bball season. We may want to try to pull some new voices in. I haven’t had much success in my limited attempts. We’ve lost a few of our more outspoken members. Are numbers down on other sports chat boards too?

I know I've just been super busy with the start of the school year and a bunch of other stuff happening in my life all summer. Haven't had much time, energy or interest in posting about basketball during the offseason. I'm looking forward to the season though!

NCAA loses more power... again... • Jun 22, 2021 04:30 PM

@Marco The eventual goal seems to me that anyone could get paid as much as they can. If someone thinks a cheerleader is a valuable asset to the university, pay them accordingly. Doesn’t seem to me the goal is to guarantee money for every student athlete but instead to allow them to earn freely just like the rest of the student body.

The only way I see this negatively impacting college sports is that it could simply perpetuate the ā€œrich get richerā€ idea as far as competition. Kansas and duke and Kentucky will all still be competitive because basketball makes enough money at those schools to be able to attract players with money. On the other hand I’m basketball, one player can make such a huge difference if schools with less marketable brands focused on one or two players they could still make a splash.

I do worry our football team is doomed.

Coach K to retire after 21-22 season • Jun 04, 2021 05:34 AM

@drgnslayr That first one is still what amazes me most about self. As much as I hate Dickie V I think it was him who told bill not to take this job because he’d never replace Roy. Instead he’s had a more successful career here than Roy himself. We as Kansas fans are very spoiled and we should be careful to remember it. Bill WONT stay forever.

Ok legal folks. Talk to me about this proposed law change in the tx leg that on top of making it more difficult to vote, makes it easier for judges (do these judges have lifetime appointments?) to overturn an election. It seems a preponderance of evidence is still a relatively high bar but why lower the bar at all?

2021 Transfer Talk/List • May 18, 2021 05:02 PM

@BeddieKU23 Looks like Devonte-lite. Maybe not quite as skilled or smooth of a shooter, but plays with a similar pace, style and attitude. Looks a bit more athletic.

@Kcmatt7 said in Hartford goes from D1 to D3 After Making the Tournament:

@BShark Without knowing anything about the situation, my guess is that they are losing money on athletics at the D1 level.

The switch to D3 means players won't get free tuition anymore. Which will probably make the athletics program a bit more profitable. (Always sort of blows my mind how D3 schools even get people to come play, but they do...)

Working at a high school where D1 talent is few and far between, I can tell you kids just want to play. They want to hold onto that dream that they might eventually make it big AS LONG as they can. And hey, if it keeps them motivated to get a degree along the way, all the better. I sometimes wish I'd have taken a couple of years to play golf at a non D1 school just to see how good I could have really been. I'm pretty happy with my English degree from KU though, especially getting to graduate in 2008 which was kind of a special year.

This seems bad. Someone explain to me why the Supreme Court (conservative or progressive) would want more kids in jail for life? From everything I’m reading this is going against precedent even. Sotomayor seems not pleased with the decision.

Bryce Thompson to transfer • Apr 14, 2021 02:22 AM

@wissox agree Bryce had a chance to be good here but it isn’t just the coaches careers on the line.

@Texas-Hawk-10 He's definitely selective with his 3 pt looks. I could see him ending up most years with somewhere between high 30s to even another year like this one similar to aaron miles. He's not really known as a shooting threat, but has to be just good enough to keep the defense honest.

With Houston’s draw Kansas would have made the final four. There I said it. 1 seed difference. Upsets clearing the path.

@drgnslayr I feel like the only time we’ve ever been the team doing this to another team in March is North Carolina in 08.

USC Game • Mar 22, 2021 08:31 PM

Just tuned in for a few minutes... 2 TERRIBLE calls/noncalls on back to back possessions favoring Gonzaga. A clear foul on a layup not called, a clear charge called a block giving gonzaga free throws...

Today's Games Thread • Mar 21, 2021 07:00 PM

Baylor is falling their way to victory right now. Flopping all over the court.

Today's Games Thread • Mar 21, 2021 03:17 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 Ironic since he mostly got the job on the heels of his tournament success. That was an elite 8/final four caliber team.

Also funny that after Gonzaga’s blow out yesterday the tv kept talking about their streak of first round wins. 12 in a row I think. Second only too.... Kansas of course. For all the moaning a lot of us did mid game yesterday about how this can’t be happening again, why does this always happen to us, yada yada yada, we’ve been better than most come March. Yes it helps to be favored in EVERY first round game but that’s not an accident. Self being labeled a great ā€œregular season coachā€ is why we are always in such a good position to win some games this time of year.

I do think Texas will drop Shaka. The sports radio around here is not going to let this one go for a while and I don’t think the fans will either.

USC not scaring me at the moment. I hope to god they play this zone against us. Garrett will feast in all that space in the middle of that 2-3
