I think these stats illustrate why it felt so... dissonant.. to name an MOP for this team.

After all of this, Agbaji must be MOP by default. But singling one guy out is antithetical to this team. It betrays what this group was all about and it leaves me with an uneasy feeling that equally worthy teammates might be overshadowed or under appreciated.

  • Seven different Jayhawks led this team in scoring in a single game, with Agbaji topping out as KU’s leading scorer 22 times. In the NCAA Tournament alone, four different players led KU in scoring, with Martin taking the cake three times and McCormack and Wilson tying for a team-high 15 points in the win over UNC.

  • Five different Jayhawks led this team in rebounding in a single game, with McCormack leading the way as KU’s top rebounder 15 times. Wilson was right behind him with 14 games as KU’s top board-getter and Braun was right there, too, with 13 games as the team leader in rebounds.

  • Five different Jayhawks led this team in assists in a single game, with Harris leading the way as KU’s top assist man a whopping 26 times.

  • Eleven, yes ELEVEN!, different Jayhawks led this team in steals in a single game, with Harris leading the way as KU’s top defensive menace 21 times.

  • And nine different Jayhawks led this team in blocks in a single game, with McCormack and Lightfoot each leading the way as KU’s top rim protector 12 different times.

That St Peter's game and KU passing UK on the all-time wins list was pretty painful to UK. The top 25 wins stat was just salt in the wound.

I empathize with the fans a bit, but honestly can't feel too bad for them because I remember the 70s and early 80s when KU was up and down.. and often mediocre. Some disappointing moments hurt to this day. I particularly remember listening to Max on the radio in 1977 when we played #1 Kentucky in AFH. KU was supposed to be a contender for the championship and have a shot to go deep in the tournament. We had a chance to make a statement that day, but the way we lost seemed to confirm that we still weren't at that level.

This moment has been a long time coming.

Turg out, Danny named interim at UMd • Apr 16, 2022 09:25 PM

Saw that and it took me back to 1986 and the Denny Crum led Cardinals.. Nervous Pervous Ellison... IIRC, we beat them in the regular season (I think it was at home) and then, had we gotten past Duke, we would have played them for the NC. I think we'd have won that game. That 86 team was a powerhouse. One of the top 10 stacked teams at KU. Danny was a sophomore and spectacular and Turgeon was a senior, if memory serves.

My thought exactly. I thought Self went a bit out of his way to stroke two guys (outside of the rotation players) at the banquet: KJ and Bobby.

SMH

Hopefully a national title will help her adjust her perspective a bit. And he was on the floor on the final shot.

Only reason for him to stay is to work on the 3pt game. If he can shoot 35-40% or better from 3 for the year (which, of course would require that Bill allow him to do that) then he could raise his stock with the NBA. 6-10 + dudes that can shoot 3s and are also skilled in the paint (jump hooks, short jumpers, etc.) are valuable in the league.

@Crimsonorblue22 Yeah. Mom is the BIG issue here.

Is the issue that another school is favored (like an alma mater) or is it all about KJ?

It sounded like that. Self was not specific. But I hear JCL was interested in coaching, so maybe Self is working a bit more deliberately on building a tree... Case certainly seems to have his support as well.

@BShark Ahhh. Too bad. I wish him and the family the best. Hopefully they can rest easy that he is in a good place and needs the space to learn how to take care of himself.

@tis4tim Exactly. This is why Gonzaga is not on this list.

Based on Self's comments at the banquet, Bobby and KJ are bedrock guys. He won't do anything that jeopardizes them.

Based on what I saw this year, Yesufu is a legitimate asset to the team. But I can also see where there aren't enough chairs when the music stops. His talent is legit and he deserves to be able to show his abilities. Would hate to see him go, but that could happen.

Listening to the banquet, Self just seems to have a different relationship with the transfers compared to the recruits. He didn't need to play head games with Remy any more (he did all season and he won — see the results), but just couldn't help himself. I'm glad Remy got MOP of Midwest Region. He deserved some hardware for his contribution. I'm hopeful we're doing something for JCL as well. By all accounts, he was a stabilizing, mature force on the team (and a sharpshooter amongst a group of sharpshooters). I think Yesufu was also a mature force on the team behind the scenes. These guys definitely deserve recognition for contributions that are off the court, in the locker room and beyond.

What's our fate? • Apr 12, 2022 04:48 PM

Between the time of the alleged infractions and now (like 5 years, right?), the courts have told the NCAA that they are violating the players' constitutional rights. Subsequently, massive changes in rules and policies were made, specifically applying to compensation/payment of players.

I'm not sure if or how many rules changes directly apply to our infractions... For instance: if a team did exactly what we are accused of doing today instead of 5 years ago, would it would be a violation? Nonetheless, I do think the rules changes in place today significantly change behaviors such that whatever was alleged probably would not have happened.

Bottom line, NCAA is culpable of generations-long exploitation of players and have been called out. Programs — not one or two, but virtually all major programs — worked around the edges of these unconstitutional practices and policies for decades. They did so because the NCAA was wrong.

At this point, it seems clear to me that the NCAA was the pot calling the kettle black.

Loved JCL. I gotta believe that having a guy on the scout team who can hit from 3 as well as any competitor our team would was helpful for our stretch defense. Plus-- that shot at the end of regulation vs TT!! Just a split second from a legendary shot.

If he remained as part of staff, that would be great. Just hope he gets to do something he wants to do!
