It’s in the refs hands

Kansas-BYOB (bring your own bibles) • Nov 17, 2024 05:25 AM

Can’t really have two poorly executed plays in a row in this game.

Kansas-BYOB (bring your own bibles) • Nov 17, 2024 05:22 AM

Everything is magnified in a compressed game.

On one hand, less room for error. On the other, intensified pressure for the team that has the most riding on the game.

Kansas-BYOB (bring your own bibles) • Nov 17, 2024 05:19 AM

That quarter was basically 1.5 drives.

Kansas-BYOB (bring your own bibles) • Nov 17, 2024 05:14 AM

That was a looong drive. Game is getting shorter (commercials notwithstanding )

Kansas-BYOB (bring your own bibles) • Nov 17, 2024 05:12 AM

Offense needs to heat up in the sub-freezing temps. Melt some snow and some mile-high hopes

Kansas-BYOB (bring your own bibles) • Nov 17, 2024 05:05 AM

@kjayhawks shhhh

Not supposed to critique the refs.

Even though there’s irrefutable evidence of bad calls. And even though a KU win would harm the Big12.. probably put Boise State in the bye position.

Kansas-BYOB (bring your own bibles) • Nov 17, 2024 05:04 AM

Probably will try to get us to jump.

Kansas-BYOB (bring your own bibles) • Nov 17, 2024 05:00 AM

Bend guys. But don’t break!

What is up with the spots on the far side???

Got to play an inspired half of football. Starting with the D

KJ Rebounding • Nov 17, 2024 12:58 AM

@mayjay said in KJ Rebounding:

whom to play but I would infer that a heckuvalot more info is available to the coaches than to me. (Practices, trainer’s reports, ass’t coaches’ scouting, etc.)
What gets my dander up (now there is an old fogey phrase) is when people attribute those decisions to some presumed reason they set forth (Bill just plays favorites who hurt the team; Andy is dumb to never let PM do a QB sneak on 4th and <1; etc.), and then go on rants about how wrong that reason is.
In other words, both these guys have more experience AND more information about the small and large pictures both, and over time I have gained perspective about how in contrast much of my analysis is colored by my reactions that are often emotional in the heat of the moment. That doesn’t make these guys infalible, but their records so far give me great confidence in giving them the benefit of the doubt that on the whole they are much smarter coaches than I ever could be. They’ve earned it.

Pretty much 100%. These are two of the most experienced and successful coaches in their sports. I gotta believe they know more than those of us in the stands.

My son was in the Color Guard for the game today!

Oakland Game Thread • Nov 17, 2024 12:24 AM

A lot to like about depth. The best thing might be how it helps push the starters during practice.

Oakland Game Thread • Nov 17, 2024 12:19 AM

Maybe not a lot to learn but some confidence and comfort with teammates to be gained.

Oakland Game Thread • Nov 17, 2024 12:16 AM

Just had a feeling about Storr I think this counts as a breakout game.

Oakland Game Thread • Nov 16, 2024 10:42 PM

Don't look past this team.

Looking for AJ Storr to have a good one.

I'm pacific time, so I will be watching this one.

It's not impossible for us to win. If we did, it would have reverberations through the playoff bracket.... Probably would hurt the B12. I don't expect the refs to do us any favors tonight.

2025 Recruiting • Nov 16, 2024 08:47 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 Great post. Wish there was a way to pin this for future reference. (@approxinfinity is that a feature?)

Mcelroy picking KU in the upset Saturday • Nov 16, 2024 01:43 AM

It would be incredible and would get the attention of the college football world. They would need to play a flawless game... put everything together just right at the right time. Not impossible. Close to zero margin for error. Maximum effort on every down.

I would LOVE to see it.

8/10 Experts Predict a Bills Win • Nov 16, 2024 01:32 AM

He went a little bit beyond "family is more important than anything."

I believe he should be able to say what he thinks in a commencement speech and I believe that his personal beliefs and his performance on the field should be disentangled.

I also get why some people thought some things he said seemed a bit anachronistic. People are free to have their opinions.

The judgey stuff is what I don't like. And it comes from both sides.

All of a Sudden • Nov 16, 2024 12:51 AM

The issue, IMHO is that Trump is consistently proposing people with relatively little experience for these very high positions.

Some are douche bags like Gaetz, most are mixed bags -- they have some ideas that make good sense and other ideas that are pretty fringe/kooky to outright dangerous.

But the common theme is the lack of experience.

Now why would someone do that? Why fill all the top positions with people with little experience of the area they are going to be in charge of?

Because if you are planning to tell people exactly what to do (aka micromanage), it's much easier if they have no depth of knowledge about what they are told to do.

IF you want to build a team of rubber-stampers and executioners, the best qualification is ignorance in the domain. The second best qualification is pledged loyalty.

Bad: People who have knowledge and experience to cloud their conscience.
Good: who have no knowledge and experience that will compete with his instructions or color their decisions.

This is so dangerous. If people don't see this, then we are truly lost.

This country isn't perfect. There are things that need to be addressed. But there's a lot that isn't broken. The way Trump is approaching this, there is HIGH likelihood that the baby will be thrown out with the bathwater because he and all his deputies don't know which is which.

That's not how you make America great again. That's how you damage the hell out of America and probably make it more vulnerable than it has been in 50 years and leave wreckage that will take generations to repair... if ever.

In Trump's words: SAD.

Maybe that's like KU and Wichita State? The little in-state rival plays above their ceiling when it's against the big state u school?

UNC Game Thread • Nov 09, 2024 03:15 AM

Learned a bit about this group tonight. Awesome to see the guards hitting shots. Speed and athleticism of UNC was a challenge. Refs are rusty.

Always good to have a talented player from the state of Kansas on the team. Even better when from Lawrence! This is a different team from last year, with a common core that knows how to win. I'm excited to see if they can make winning a habit.

Basketball Season • Nov 07, 2024 06:04 PM

Rebound. Play defense. Execute on offense. Hit shots.

I know it sounds simple, but limiting their possessions and shots is pretty crucial.

Basketball Season • Nov 07, 2024 05:48 AM

My son, a freshman in Navy ROTC, is scheduled to do color guard for the Oakland game. If anyone happens to be there and get a clean photo of the color guard, I'd be most appreciative.

All of a Sudden • Nov 07, 2024 01:59 AM

When I was growing up, we would have friends visit us in June who were not from the midwest. They'd come for a week and inevitably there'd be weather. We'd get a Tornado watch and they'd freak out. Tornado watch sounded scary. All they heard was "Tornado". They didn't realize that it just meant there were conditions that could produce a Tornado. And they'd ignore the fact that there were no storm clouds. They'd ask 'where's the shelter?'

And one time we were under a severe thunderstorm warning and they kind of disregarded it. And we tried to warn them.. They didn't understand that severe thunderstorms produce tornadoes at a rate higher than tornado watches. They didn't realize that a 'warning' isn't if a storm is coming — it is — the only question is when.

They learned quickly when 70mph winds blew over a huge walnut tree, lightning struck our front porch and we had walnut-sized hail for about 5 minutes.

I think a lot of people saw Harris as a tornado watch and Trump as a severe thunderstorm warning... and didn't really get what that meant.

Howard Game Thread • Nov 05, 2024 11:34 PM

Upon a bit of reflection, I think I should be relishing in a team with a senior point guard-- one with multiple years of experience in Self's system and even with National Championship experience. And furthermore-- an All America center with 2 years in Self's system... And surrounded by athletes in the wings and forwards. Some good outside shooters. There's a lot to like about this team.

Also, it reminds me of 2009-10. A redo on that year both excites me and scares me.

2025 Baseball Season • Nov 05, 2024 05:42 PM

Witt is a gold glover too. Very nice.

Howard Game Thread • Nov 05, 2024 05:36 PM

After this game, I had the same thought (we have shooters this year! Yay!) and then I remembered this was Howard. Our shooters did look good against them, but let's see how they look on Friday when they go up against size, length, etc.

IIRC, didn't look so great against Arkansas... but that wasn't a perfect litmus test either. So my fingers are crossed that we will look more like last night on a regular basis, but too soon to tell.

Other games 2025-2026 • Nov 05, 2024 05:31 PM

Game was at Gonzaga. Tough place to play. Clearly, Baylor was not exactly ready for that.

I do think these are the kinds of games that help teams down the road. They can learn a lot from that game.

Pigs • Oct 26, 2024 04:52 AM

I like Dejuan, but I can't help but think what it would be like if we had the opportunity to recruit a guy like Boogie into the program. Damn. We've passed on some guards.

I sure hope he comes through again.

Basketball Season • Oct 26, 2024 04:46 AM

I know our offense is designed for different players (like a big guy at the 5) but this was an opportunity for guys to show they can move the ball, maybe go get a bucket when needed... and certainly hit some jumpers.. We didn't do much of that.

Also, the issues with D had little to do with missing pieces in the lineup, to this untrained eye. We got torched from the outside by a true freshmen...

!st - -AP Poll is out. • Oct 17, 2024 08:56 PM

Our strength of schedule rating should be interesting to watch this year.

Ncaa coaches • Oct 17, 2024 08:42 PM

Tony Bennett abruptly stepping down at Univ. of Virginia.

Interesting development and timing is even more curious.

My son sent a photo. It’s basically a fence around the circle where the fountain was. But no fountain.

Checked Kansan and a bit more here and there on Google. Came up empty but maybe not looking in the right places.

Basketball Season • Oct 14, 2024 07:53 PM

Hopefully it’s a good upgrade because it has taken a while and cost some $$$

!st - -AP Poll is out. • Oct 14, 2024 07:48 PM

I think if we survive the schedule we will be very deserving of the ranking

Old heads • Oct 02, 2024 12:10 AM

I'm ok with the packers as long as they aren't playing the chiefs! Lol

Yeah, I think this team is not as bad as the record shows. It can compete with solid (top 50) teams But its margin for error is close to zero. It's not clear that we are good enough to overcome even one mistake in a game. Any bad luck (ahem, bad calls) and it's over.

Old heads • Sep 30, 2024 04:57 AM

Jaybate may have died. I only say that because his posting stopped rather abruptly. I have no real idea what happened to him but he definitely was a prolific poster, and entertaining. Speaking for myself, I miss him.

Possibly the most memorable topic that garnered a lot of discussion was about the shoe companies.. And recent changes such as NIL have let most of the air out of that balloon on that topic.

To say there have been a lot of changes in sports in the past few years would be an understatement.

I think this board has still has the reactions and pontification about games/teams that it had at the very beginning. I think now, it's mixed in with updates and tips -- newsy stuff and insider gossip.

There are still rants, but probably less of the diatribes. Sometimes, a poster will get riled up with pessimism, only to have another poster off talk them off the edge.

But likewise, I can count on the fact that if I put on the crimson-and-blue-tinted glasses and start convincing myself that our football team is going to go 8-3, there are posters who may offer a more measured assessment. Perhaps that's pessimistic. Perhaps not. But whatever it is, it's discourse and informative. And I appreciate it every bit as much today as I did when it started.

The JD Redemption Story • Sep 30, 2024 04:34 AM

@Kcmatt7 said in The JD Redemption Story:

The bigger issue I have with Grimes is his playcallibg has not adjusted for how we are currently playing. Meaning JD should not be asked to throw the ball 30 times.

Yes. 100%. And... not adjusting is probably the key -- I'm not sure his play calling adjusted for the particular mix of talent he had -- the line, the QB, the RBs, and receivers -- they are not what we had last year and they are definitely not what he had at Baylor, etc. In other words, I think he more or less forced a system on a group that didn't have the makeup to make that system successful.

The JD Redemption Story • Sep 29, 2024 04:58 AM

I went to the game today.

That’s about all I have to say about that.

@jayballer67 We get a win by surprising a team who had a short week and has multiple injuries at key positions. And also, flu is running through the team the night before.

I guess, given that stat, I should say the defense is not good either.
