BAD BALL is back! • Jan 21, 2022 07:23 PM

@drgnslayr said in BAD BALL is back!:

"“Embrace ugly games, grimy games,” Self said explaining his general philosophy on how to attack the Big 12 this season. “I don’t think we did a great job of that (vs. OU) but we did a good enough job.”" ~ KUSports.com

BAD BALL is officially back!

Or is it?

Most of us in here remember those days. Games in the 50s and 60s. Ugly basketball. Basketball hard to watch and feel good about, even when we win.

For decades now... I listened to a rule that was put out there by someone. "KU rarely wins when they don't score 70 points!" How many of you have heard this statement? I've heard it from many, including people that are hardly even fans of college basketball or KU.

In our loss to TT we only had 67 points. So that game holds water on this old "golden rule."

But our win at OU only garnered 67 points. Our home win against ISU was achieved with only 62 points.

What does this point to? Our point totals look like they are headed down towards BAD BALL territory. We do know we can win games and even league championships with BAD BALL. The key (drum roll) is our defense!

So how is our defense holding up in league play? To date, we are only giving up 64.4 points on average. 3 of our 5 games have been away.

It is my belief... from this day forward this season... we focus on defense. Our offense looks inconsistent. Obviously, we have to look for points whenever they are possible. But the road to gold in this league this year is to value defense and possessions. That means focus on rebounds and taking care of the ball. That means two of our best BAD BALL players should be Jalen and Dajuan. I'm thinking many in here don't want to hear that. And I only believe it to a point. CB has a good point average (we need points) and a good rebounder. Och... well... someone has to put up consistent points and also be our "go to" guy down the stretch. Where does that leave Big Mac? I would say... his value moving forward will largely be about his defense protection in the post and rebounding. When he has mismatches and can score... that is the cherry on top.

For us to be successful winning the league with BAD BALL we are going to have to get a lot tougher. That means we have to be at the FT line a heck of a lot more because we don't shy away from contact. Might also mean that we go deeper into our bench because we foul more. It also means we have to fight a lot harder for 50/50 balls!

Where does Remy fit into all of this? He came to Kansas not used to playing tough defense. We seen him soft. We've seen Self dissatisfied. Is he healthy now? I think Remy is still a very good investment for earning solid PT. He brings energy into the game, and our guys need energy to slug our way through BAD BALL. He still has some defensive weaknesses... but he is putting in more effort with team defense and stealing balls. He is starting to bear down a little harder and will continue to tighten his defensive play.

While most KU fans were excited for this year because of our potential firepower... I envisioned this team could become a very solid defensive team, even without Marcus at point. I've listened to plenty of naysayers with this team and their defense. And I've definitely watched us play some very soft defense. But I do see the screws tightening and it can't happen at a better time!

Is it possible we could win-out in league if we can maintain 70 ppg? I'm not going to focus on that. I'm jumping on the Bill Self wagon and cheering us on as we survive BAD BALL and hopefully bring back the league title to Kansas!

STATISTICS:

According to the conference stats... we are at the top in offense and the bottom at defense. Does it still work that we focus on defense? Yes. Especially if you believe the road to a conference title isn't just through Lawrence anymore... it is from winning on the road!

Your right cause this league lives on bad/ugly ball , slow down offense - - limited , possessions, you have to value each possession even that much more , what's that mean ? - -means you can not afford sloppy ball handling , careless turnovers , it means you have to compete on the boards. It's NOT going to get any better tomorrow against K/State , they love ugly ball I read today I think they defend the 3 pt line which is one of the better things we do leading the league at like 37 %- - K/ State defends the line and it's like I think it said they defend the 5th best in the Country against the 3. - - So how do we counter act that ? - -It means this very well might be one of those games where we have to get points out of Dave - - And I think WE DO have an advantage at the 5 in this game he HAAS to come through with the way K/State plays every trip is so important.

Like you said we are 1st on the offensive end and dead last on the defensive end , which is surprising really cause the whole time has been if you don't wanna play defense for Bill - -then you sit.
We have SIX teams in this league that are averaging 73 points or less and KSU is leading that 6 with an offensive output of 68.3. - -YET this league I think they said has ALL teams in the top 40 of the defensive end. - -It's a WAR every night out. - -We HAVE to win BAD/UGLY BALL to hoist yet another trophy

Gut Check time coming up • Jan 21, 2022 07:07 PM

Well we really find out what the guys are all about - - what were really made of coming up. Got a brutal 5 game stretch starting tomorrow. - - K/State - - then turn right around Big Monday - - Texas Tech , - - - followed up Saturday with Kentucky - - -turn right around Big Monday at Iowa St - - Then follow that up with Baylor. That's a pretty tough stretch. Obviously would love to be 5-0 during that time, just don't think that's gonna happen - thinking/hoping more for 4-1 we will see. - -Time to lace em up boys. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Things not getting any better here in Shawnee County either ( Topeka ). They just released their CIVID count for the week on Jan 9th - -through the 15th . @nuleafjhawk said in Guys don't laugh but we have A Game Saturday:

@jayballer67 Have you ever seen KU vs K-State?

From 1994 to 2005, KU won 31 straight games against K-State, the longest streak for either school in the series. Also, from 1984 to 2007, KU won 24 straight games on the Wildcats' home floor, the third longest win-streak on an opponents home court in NCAA history.

Kansas has dominated the all-time series and leads the men's basketball series 201–94 following the most recent game on February 2, 2021. This is the most victories by one school over another in NCAA Division I men's basketball.[3] Kansas has led in the all-time series since 1922, and since 1984, Kansas leads the series 82–12.

Those two paragraphs are from Wikipedia.

A few years ago, while watching one of the KU - KSU games, one announcer said something about the In-State rivalry. The other guy interrupted and said "In order for it to be a rivalry, one team has to win at least occasionally"

I'll stick to my statement. It'll be closer to 40 than 2.

lol - - have a good day

@nuleafjhawk said in Guys don't laugh but we have A Game Saturday:

KU by 40.

It's K-Stupid-State

LMAO , I love your party treats , save me some lol. ya it's the same Stupid K State that just beat two top 25 teams back to back one being Texas Tech that one the whupped us , and then Texas . K State the one that lost but should of beat Oklahoma at Oklahoma with many players missing , the K State team the should of beat West Virginia. Have played well .

If we were playing more consistency handling the ball better not turning it over , If we didn't go in these long scoring droughts throwing up bricks , Ya I could see may a 20- 20 plus win MAYBE , but with it being at their place , they will have that hole pumped up their little student fan base will be acting stupid feeding into it , we are what THEY think is their BIG time rival - -( I don't ) in order for it to be a true rival the other team aas to win every now an then more then just once a decade - - but anyways so that's the way they look at it. - -It's not even gonna come close to 40 , I know your joking but umm ya dam 40? - - ya save me the party treats lol

@rockchalkwyo said in Guys don't laugh but we have A Game Saturday:

I think it will be a closer game as well. They were short handed in their first few conference games due to Covid, which makes their conference record worse than what it is.

It should be a better matchup for Big Dave than what he saw today.

ya I think it's just one of those match ups for him. but he has to take advantage of it

Hope you don't think I'm joking but we ( Ku ) needs to bring their A game Saturday. - -K/State just beat Teas in Austin, giving them back to back wins over ranked teams Texas Tech and now Texas

You know that Bramledge is going to be nuts, In State Rival they always pack the place for us , they have been in almost if not every game this year in Conference, we CAN NOT have any of these dam 4-5 minute scoring droughts , got to take care of the ball play smart jump on them early and don't let up. Don't give them any kind of idea that they belong with us. - -I realize Texas might be over rated but we are just not a team that can take teams for granted. - They are going to be full of confidence and feeling Cocky with us coming in -just got to be ready. - they gt some players Pack , Smith Nowell pretty decent.

I'm sure Coach will make sure the guys he has their attention - we have just got to be reAdy play smart - Gonna need all the guys focues Braun , Wilson , Och -If Dave eve had a game Saturday would be a day to have that. I think he has the opportunity to have solid gameaginst them but just got to do it - -I know it sounds crazy but this game is not a given. - -Hope the guys will be ready - --ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
