@nuleafjhawk Actually, and unfortunately, thinking the fb is "bad" is probably the optimistic view. Most people think in much more extreme terms in the awfulness spectrum...

@nuleafjhawk Hey! Where have you been? We missed you for the whole charity game controversy!

I'm Ready For Antlers Again! • Oct 25, 2017 01:36 AM

@drgnslayr Exhibition games cannot be against Div 1 foes. That is the big waiver that likely won't happen unless there is another monster disaster or need for war bonds or something.

@approxinfinity @BShark

Thx! I started looking around and finally found a "getting started" link in the help section. I will do some 'sploring for a few days.

@approxinfinity I joined but haven't had time to explore the site. Is there a good basic help section explaining the sections of the site, how to use it, and the icons at the bottom? I don't use any programs like this, and don't use twitter or facebook, so some of the terminology you use leaves this old dinosaur a few milion years behind....

@JayHawkFanToo Well, @HighEliteMajor also liked Tyler Davis of A & M, so it is a wash perhaps. He made the Jabbar list, I believe.

I'm Ready For Antlers Again! • Oct 24, 2017 04:36 PM

@drgnslayr Not at all likely as an exhibition for reasons already given. NCAA doesn't usually grant lots of waivers for repetitive events. As to reular season, who knows? Maybe if MU gets a recruit KU wanted then that could stimulate something. I don't think HCBS is real interested, tho.

@wissox It is funny, the url is different but the article number is the same, and both links go to the Star.

@wissox That is the same article cited by @HighEliteMajor in his "checkmate" article. I like Vahe's writing. No Posnanski, but who is?

@JayHawkFanToo I think they could have a game in KC every year, but sell tickets with the same allocation to each school as was done here. I think that even atmosphere was what made it more fun. Of course, people would try to find resellers and that could skew things. I think it is much more doable than a home game every 2 years--home and home worked in conference but I think it is unworkable when spread out.

And a neutral ticket policy would also keep it closer to a postseason simulation.

@elpoyo Seriously, that is what you are stretching hard to find to put him down? You would be better off if you said he wrote his name funny in 5th grade or something.

Thoughts on the victory vs Fizzou • Oct 23, 2017 01:56 PM

@dylans I was responding to a question about the risk of playing a "good team" before the season, and responded solely in terms of the humiliation, etc, answers that have been discussed in connex with the MU game. "Worst" was in that context only. My answer to you dealt purely with the injury risks raised by the video, which I do not see see as being any different from any other game--whether against a good or a bad team.

Checkmate - Border War Back On • Oct 23, 2017 01:19 PM

@HighEliteMajor And he is on record from before the exit by MU as hostile to KU not being willing to continue the athletics series.

Thoughts on the victory vs Fizzou • Oct 23, 2017 01:12 PM

@dylans That risk is the same regardless of who the opponent is, or even in practice (a la Doke). The alternative to risking injury is to schedule no exhibitions, no trips, and no practices or scrimmages--and no games. Let's just have bb decided by computer simulations.

Well that was fun or was it? • Oct 23, 2017 01:09 PM

@dylans And, fortunately, everybody is/are not I.

Checkmate - Border War Back On • Oct 23, 2017 01:07 PM

@HighEliteMajor This is not your most compelling argument. Vahe came to the Star in 2013 after 25 years covering MU sports in St Louis, so he is hardly objective.

Well that was fun or was it? • Oct 23, 2017 12:57 PM

@dylans I get along with everybody. Unless they insist on being wrong about everything, of course, like my brother!

Thoughts on the victory vs Fizzou • Oct 23, 2017 12:55 PM

@HawkChamp Risk? OMG! We might lose! Someone else might make us look bad! Worst of all, someone might make a bragging comment!!! Oh, the shame of it all, oh, the sorrow...

Well that was fun or was it? • Oct 23, 2017 12:52 PM

@dylans Maybe it just means (1) it was a catalyst for donating due to highlighting attention for the cause, and (2) the much higher success over the past 5 years for KU has resulted in a more involved, larger, and more enthusiastic fan base?

Well that was fun or was it? • Oct 23, 2017 12:49 PM

@jayballer54 Exhibitions have to be against non-Div 1 schools, so it is unrealistic to expect better teams from larger schools.

@jayballer54 Yeah, I saw that this morning. Definitely perked up his game after I went to bed!

Wigs hits late 3 to sink OKC • Oct 23, 2017 12:10 PM

@kjayhawks What a great game for Twolves. It was at OKC, too, which is huge for them.

I always look at the +/- in the box score just to see if anything pops out. Here, it is very telling about Minnesota's lack of bench depth compared to OKC. Every Minn starter was in positive double digits (+10, 14, 15, and 21) except for Towns (+2). Every bench player but one was negative enough for OKC to be so close (0, -8, -12, -13, -19).

Carmello Anthony was the only starter positive for OKC, at +12. Westbrook, although the high scorer at 31 points, was minus 17 for the game (37 mins), while their backup point guard, Felton, was +23 in 18 mins.

Nothing dispositive, but I have always sensed that while Westbrook and Anthony score at a heady clip and look flashy, neither necessarily makes a team around them better. I think I will see how the season goes with both of them together.

Who you got in the World Series? • Oct 23, 2017 11:52 AM

Let's see. I always try to figure out which area needs a boost more after some major issue. Here, two possibilities relatively even:

Astros, so Texas gets uplift from despair from hurricane, or Dodgers, so California gets uplift from despairs of wildfire.

Seems even.

However, this year I go with Astros, because Hollywood deserves no uplift from Weinstein.

Well that was fun or was it? • Oct 23, 2017 11:15 AM

One problem with making it a regular exhibition would be we would have to drop one of our others against the small Kansas schools. Those programs benefit from getting their "fodder fee" at AFH.

All in all, a one time event as an exhibition. I have no opinion on whether it becomes a regular matchup--donors might make themselves heard on that. Maybe KC would give each team a million bucks. Then we might see it.

Well that was fun or was it? • Oct 23, 2017 12:53 AM

DoubleDD said:

So you want KU to play top 25 teams in exhibition games?

This was not a regular exhibition game because those have to be against non-Div 1 schools. But if they set up routine charity exhibitions, playing top 25 would be great for KU every season.

The Wildcats • Oct 22, 2017 03:42 PM

@DoubleDD Agreed!

I remember a discussion with lots of arguing about whether we should "settle" for a Snyder-level coach instead of trying for a better one who would take us to national prominence and the football playoffs.

Yes, this was the actual point of dispute. Maybe we should hold out for a coach who can just win a road game? Start from there. Other aspirations might be symptoms of major mushroom use....

DoubleDD said:

... If KU gets rid of Beaty that would mean KU would be paying for 4 HC's?...

Maybe not--we might not get anyone willing to tank their career, so we might still only be paying 3.

@kjayhawks Minus 25 yards rushing. I can sure see why we tried to pass 20 times and rushed 31. Gotta keep diggin' that hole.

I watched several 3rd-down-and-long plays where we tried passes in the backfield that resulted in losses or incompletions, and a few others where on 3rd and 10 (or 15) the pass was no further than 5 yards over the line of scrimmage. And Bender didn't even get the ball all the way to those guys a couple of times. All those plays were in the same area of the field--behind or near the line of scrimmage, where we were stymied all day. Maybe trying a whole series of patterns that are 15 or 20 yards deep would open something up?

But then again, the o-line was getting swsmped by three guys, so maybe deep receivers never could get open.

Our biggest gain on a pass play was 14 yds on pass interference. Bender's second pass was complete for 13. But our third longest "successful" pass play was 11 yds--again, pass interference. So TCU's secondary made longer plays for our passing game than we did.

I feel bad for all those guys. I believe the coaches need more imagination to right the ship. Not trick plays, but plays that, if successful, get the team fired up, like a few deep passes. 31 rushes for minus 25 will not excite anyone except the other team.

@3genhawk Nah, he claims to be older than me. That's why I have to defend him when he goes to bed!

Texas Christian Horned Frogs • Oct 22, 2017 03:25 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10 Not fair. He is suggesting changing QBs to see if it might make a difference. You are insisting on evidence supporting his suggestion as better than Bender. He gave you stats showing how bad Bender has been, but you want stats that Stanley is better. So, perhaps there aren't any? Who cares?

When a team is as bad as KU, it is perfectly reasonable to want a change, any change. At this point, I would start scouting the intramural teams. But I don't have any evidence their players are better--but how much worse can they be?

Frank Mason: NBA Starter • Oct 22, 2017 02:37 AM

FM getting his first action, but it is tough. 9 mins, no stats except one turnover and 0-3 FG. Sac losing 49 to 38 at Denver with 7:28 left in the 3rd.

@JayHawkFanToo There are many easy questions. It is arriving at the answers that is hard.

Border War to start back up?? • Oct 21, 2017 03:22 PM

@HighEliteMajor I sit corrected on the MU rationale.

It is kind of funny, now that this is scheduled. The sun has risen every day, no worse pestilence and plagues than usual, and it is being done to help victims of disasters and hasn't caused new ones. My annoyance at MU has diminished. Life goes on. #Shocked!

@HighEliteMajor My world, and maybe that of a lot or even most of us, from November to April, is a leather orange sphere....

I don't know about flat vs round earthers. I just hope we don't live long enough to see it get levelled--oh, wait! I guess we wouldn't, would we?

@HighEliteMajor Seriously, I was referring to the original post and its virtual cornucopia of "hypotheses" that seemed to me to range from partially evidence based all the way to pure fantasy. So I equated those with flat earth. I never looked at either of the other two posters' sites and had no idea what they dealt with. It was just an attempt at humor that turned out poorly. I have privately apologized to @JayHawkFanToo.

Once I finally looked at the three references late last night, I was amused by the irony because they deal with an issue I also think deserves investigation, and have no ax to grind about it.

Astros win - - Astros win RE - -( Wissox • Oct 21, 2017 03:48 AM

@jayballer54 Well, obviously when you were a kid you were almost a dictionary definition of bandwagon--Packers and Yankees in the 50s and 60s? Don't get so upset about it--I would say pretty much half the country was the same and the other half was on the "Hate them" bandwagon. Face it, embrace it--you became a fan of those teams when they dominated the papers and the airwaves. No competition for your MLB or NFL attention in the 50s and 60s (A's were a joke, Chiefs were new league AFL).

No one should or does question your homegrown KU loyalty. Don't take it so seriously. You just happen to be kind of lucky to have the fandom you do.
