The great Debate? • Aug 15, 2017 11:57 PM

@KUSTEVE Don't you know by now that we have entered the era of forced absolutes, when subtlety is forbidden and seeing both sides of an issue is fatal?

New NCAA tournament twist • Aug 15, 2017 10:30 PM

@wissox Yeah, except that there, the embarrassed people were not the ones who screwed up!

@wissox Throughout the tournament, it says. I can't wait for the first time someone screws it up and never can live it down!

@approxinfinity I ended up buying a new carb and fuel filter for my grass trimmer. Works fine now. Moved on to my blower that would not run longer than 35 seconds by replacing the clogged fuel filter with the cleaner one from the trimmer. Works fine now. Moved on to my hedge trimmer, which I haven't needed since it was balky 4 years ago (we moved, no hedges). All the lines had totally disintegrated. Replaced those but no start. Will try new plug next. But why bother, come to think of it?

Doing my bit for cleaner air by not fixing all of them.

Wow, and even the certified mechanic who mocked us for trying didn't get it right! I wonder if that is why people share info when these things happen, despite knowing we could be wrong, on the off chance it might help someone before paying $60 diagnostic fees?

The great Debate? • Aug 15, 2017 01:28 PM

Seems to me that if you have one smaller conference with a single elite team, and another 40% larger conference with two or three elite teams, it is a lot more likely that the team in the smaller conference will have a long championship streak. It wouldn't matter if the teams were exchanged.

Having two elite teams in a single conference almost guarantees that they will knock each other off periodically. Put either of those teams in a conference by themselves and you could see a long streak.

Don't forget that Duke and NC, through all the changes in ACC membership, have always played each other home and away. Remember, too, that KU did not have to do that until 2012-13. That includes the early days of The Streak when the biggest challenges were Texas (including the Aldridge, Ford, Durant, Augustin, Gibson, Pittman, Tucker, and Thompson years) and Oklahoma (and Blake Griffin was injured when we played the single game against them the year he was Nat'l POY). Since we tied with one of those teams in 3 of the first 4 Streak championships, it cannot be denied that our limited exposure to those teams played a role.

Could Duke or NC have done the same? Sure! Take either of those teams out of the ACC over the past 30 years (which also would have eased recruiting since there would no longer be a conference rivalry, much as we no longer seem to be fighting with MU), and you could easily have seen the remaining one run off a long string. Move them to the Big 12, same thing.

Elite teams and elite coaches will excel wherever they are.

What About Mitchell? • Aug 15, 2017 12:53 AM

@JayHawkFanToo Sometimes I have a heckuva time getting the auto-select function to behave properly. It seems to reset every time Android updates. On my PC, it happens in Word. I constantly reset the options but it goes back again. The biggest problem I have is when it pastes something over the top of something it has autoselected when I only wanted to insert text.

Continued diligence is the price we pay for technology. Do not let Skynet use autoselect!

What About Mitchell? • Aug 14, 2017 09:01 PM

@Kcmatt7 But not athletics.

What About Mitchell? • Aug 14, 2017 08:03 PM

@Kcmatt7 Because it is outside the parameters of the standardized NCAAA LOI, among other things. He already has agreed, if he signs a LOI, not to compete with KU by playing at another school. KU has no legitimate interest in preventing someone from entering their chosen profession.

It would also kill any future recruiting for that matter. Most schools regret players leaving early, but many tout their development of NBA talent.

As for paying back a scholarship, why would anyone ever sign such a thing? If drugs, or felonies, or other violations of rules don't result in that, why should being ready to go pro be different?

What About Mitchell? • Aug 14, 2017 07:16 PM

@Kcmatt7 Let me rephrase that: he could sign one but it would not be enforceable and would probably get KU in trouble.

ROYALS vs Cards game 1 • Aug 14, 2017 12:16 AM

@JayHawkFanToo People blamed Yost for the bad start, didn't give him credit for the recovery, and now start relighting the torches after the current problems. Nothing new here.

Similar to certain fans feelings about Self, but those big slumps haven't hapened for 13 years running now. As unprecedented as that is, now they decide he can't coach well in the Elite 8.

All managers and coaches are afterthoughts following the best performances of their teams, but fans decide they are worse than, and are the direct cause of, their teams' bad losses.

ROYALS vs Cards game 1 • Aug 13, 2017 06:02 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Yost's greatest criticism came between 2010 and 2013 when he played the young guys despite miserable results, letting them learn how to win. He was roundly denounced in Milwaukee for the same thing, and fired before they came back to make the playoffs.

That stubbornness paid off for the Royals in 2014-15. Unfortunately, he has been saddled with some crappy contracts like Gordon's and Soria's, where the investments have resulted in disproportionate PT preventing timely development of some outfielders (Boni) and pitchers (Junis doing the yo yo thing). Those contracts also resulted in dismantling HDH when injuries struck instead of allowing the Royals to persevere with the bullpen formula that made the team unique (a formula developed by Yost's own unique experiments).

The team has lost its sense of stability during the past 18 months. Perez being out has prevented the single most clutch player at the heart of the Royals (most since Brett, in fact) from being able to lead by example and from calming down the walk and WP happy pitchers during the recent slump.

Yost isn't responsible for the poor performances dragging the team down. What he is responsible for, however, is letting pitchers who are clearly out of sorts stay in after walking the bases loaded, throwing wild pitches with runners on, or throwing 9 straight 91 mph fastballs until someone manages to blast one.

I love Yost, and I think he is a great manager for developing young players who are learning to jell. Whether he is able to manage a shifting roster is the test of this season.

What About Mitchell? • Aug 13, 2017 03:24 PM

I feel it is important to settle this right now. Mitch will definitely get a lot of minutes this year.

ROYALS vs Cards game 1 • Aug 13, 2017 02:23 PM

What About Mitchell? • Aug 13, 2017 04:05 AM

@HighEliteMajor @JayHawkFanToo

The same complaints about not using Diallo in 2015-16 were also raised about not using Bragg more, who stayed another year and was virtually useless. Based on "potential" and "talent" Lucas should have been #3 big. Diallo got better in the D league, but not good enough to convince any team he should stay in the League consistently. Bragg didn't get better despite ample opportunities offered by Doke's injury.

Sometimes it is a crapshoot when someone will "get it." Diallo may finally be getting it. Bragg hasn't yet. Neither of them did during their year together at KU. Lucas was a backup plan forced to the fore, and was good enough to help get KU to 2 regional finals.

In both of those finals, the biggest aberration on offense from the regular season wasn't remotely Lucas (6 pts, 12 rebs vs Nova; 9 pts, 3 rebs vs Ore). It was dismal 3 pt shooting by players we had relied on all year (Mason and Selden, 1 for 12 combined vs Nova; Graham and Jackson 0 for 8, Mason 2 for 8 ).

To chalk it all up to not having better developed a Diallo or a Bragg because of a lack of rim protection is a bit simplistic to say the least. It was our inability to score both years, including untimely turnovers and fouls, that did us in.

@justanotherfan I think a bunch of them might generally feel the same way and shy away from CK as too hot to handle. And they all then just coincidentally choose not to improve their teams. No collusion necessary.

Kind of like how someone working for a candidate for president might hear that someone has dirt on his candidate's opponent and goes to get it. Merely being pragmatic. No collusion necessary.

Gary Woodland • Aug 13, 2017 12:36 AM

Gary was tied for 2nd after the first day. He fell to a tie for 18th on Friday. After a good round Saturday, he is now in a tie for 7th.

Tee off time for him in Sunday's final is 1:05 pm CDT.

He lost one of his unborn twins this spring, and then waited on pins and needles for his daughter to be born. Now he is back on the circuit and doing great. Had a good British Open and is hoping for a strong finish in the PGA this weekend to give him a good position for the FedEx Cup. Go, Gary!

@DoubleDD Actually, I hate knockouts. Exciting, but I am too squeamish worrying about people dying. I kind of like decisions on points because they get people so angry!

Any boxing fans? • Aug 10, 2017 11:14 PM

@DoubleDD I seem to remember back in the mid-70s when boxing purists complained about a guy who used the "rope-a-dope" style in a certain bout in Africa. He would cover up against the ropes, and let his powerful opponent wear himself out trying to break through his upraised gloves and arms, with the elastic ropes absorbing some of the impact. Then he "floated like a butterfly, stung like a bee," and won what may have been the best heavyweight bout of all time.

Over time, Mayweather, who utilizes that style, too, will be remembered long after the bitchers and moaners are forgotten.

Of course, the "Rumble in the Jungle" ended with an 8 round knockout, totally ruining the lesson here, but it is a nice story anyway.

Any boxing fans? • Aug 10, 2017 09:56 PM

@DoubleDD If people who pay big money feel cheated if it is a points win rather than a K.O., they must be idiots if he hasn't knocked anyone out in 18 years.

This and that... • Aug 10, 2017 09:52 PM

@justanotherfan It also shows how the metrics for KU were skewed by how much Mason and JJ contributed.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 10, 2017 05:07 PM

You could take Robinson and still benefit regardless of whether he is eligible, or if not, even if he doesn't stay 2018-19. Right now there is no one of any size against whom our 1st team and redshirts can practice. Doke needs to be able to work against size on both offense and defense, and Mitch, while energetic, isn't at the level we will see in games.

This works, of course, only if Self is able to succeed this year despite having that thin front line.

If Robinson finds out he doesn't grade first round at the combine (if invited), then he probably stays and it was a good bet.

@Barney All year long there had been a problem with LL fumbling those quick dumps in the lane. I think that might have happened in the Oregon game early, but it all blends together in the brain and makes me want to reach for a bottle of something strong....

Pigs do fly? • Aug 09, 2017 04:42 PM

@EdwordL Teams have done it successfully in last second FT situations trailing by 2 with one FT. KU did it successfully once in a late-season game sometime in 1975, I believe. But it is usually set up for someone besides the shooter (who should be blocked out) to get the carom. We had 6-10 Danny Knight, 6-10 Rick Suttle, and 6-9 Donnie von Moore in those years to get rebounds. A bit more size available than Preston and Lightfoot trying to grab an intentional miss of Doke's.

Self also sounded like Doke was sick enough that they didn't want him around the other players. Holding Billy out for his slight knee tweak was just being careful. Neither of these are signs of a trend.

@HawkChamp I haven't seen anybody in any discussions who have suggested even a snowball's chance in hell for a waiver. No one has even speculated on what special circumstances he could raise if he applies for one. I seem to recall one waiver a few years back based on a player needing to be back close to home to help raise his siblings when his single mom got sick. But that might be my imagination making a mixture of memories.

I don't think the fact he is first year would matter, or even the fact that it was only 2 weeks of summer school. I think the NCAA will only grant a waiver when the circumstances demonstrate a reason for an exception to the sit-out rule.

Wanting to play rather than sitting out just because you intend to be a OAD doesn't seem very compelling. NCAA is more likely to be sympathetic to kids who want to go to school.

My lawnmower • Aug 06, 2017 08:05 PM

@approxinfinity Fuel filter is in the tank probably. Check also for deteriorated or pinched fuel lines. My engineer fiend says one I have that won't run right might be a clogged internal feed in the carburetor from previous old gas. If so, would need a 48 hr boil in an ultrasonic bath. I decided to spring for a new $30 carburetor.

If there is no spark, though, it is likely not a carburetor issue. Especially if there is no catching or running for a couple seconds after squeezing the primer bulb. Then, it could well be a problem with the ignition wire. Make sure it is not detached inside the spark plug hood.

My lawnmower • Aug 06, 2017 03:20 PM

On a riding mower, there could also be a hidden fuse on the wire going from the battery.

My lawnmower • Aug 06, 2017 03:04 PM

This might sound silly, but make sure the fuel line shutoff is open. Honda engines have a fuel line shutoff with a yellow twister that is identical to the twisting cap on the oil plug. Let's just say I have read about people not noticing they had looked at the wrong one.

@Fightsongwriter Coleby left after we signed Whitman, so his minutes looked more limited.

I hadn't realized before that the 5-star guy who left WKY after being in 2 weeks of summer school, Robinson, could end up having his minutes at WKY replaced by Coleby. Dwight actually might have lucked into a pretty good situation for showing his ability enough to get a Euro contract.
