@Crimsonorblue22 Poor Jaspers!
@BShark "If I were in charge at Mizery..."---
---oh, hell, I would just kill myself.
Statistical anomaly of the day: only 6 turnovers. 16 offensive rebounds. And still only 52 pts.
@Kcmatt7 Very interesting. I like the idea of an extended grace period.
I see several problems that need to be addressed, these being the high levels of debt, the high interest rate, the low rate of pay (and lack of jobs) available to new grads while facing high loan payments, and the high default rate. A bigger problem over time has been the ridiculously high rate of inflation of college costs.
Addressing some of these in no particular order, I have a couple of ideas of the wild-hair variety:
-- reducing the next year's payments by 5% if all payments in a year are made on time.
--federal tax deduction of the interest paid, even if the payer does not otherwise deduct.
--set up a program by which half of a student's loan interest paid every year is credited to a health savings account, or maybe an education savings account for their future kids, or perhaps a restricted savings account that they receive only when the loan is paid..
--prohibit any school receiving grants or federal money from increasing any educational costs (tuition, fees, housing, even freaking parking tickets) more than 3% or the rate of inflation, whichever is higher.
--require any school paying more than one fired football coach to provide to graduating students funds for their loan payments totalling an amount equal to 5 times the combined salaries.
That last one is just a fantasy....
Phil 76ers clearly going into the lottery this year. Likely to be near the top if they keep losing at the current pace.
What do you all think about drafting Josh Jackson to play with Embiid? Okafor is seen as possible trade bait. Simmons, Joel, and JJ could be a great nucleus but would it be better to trade Okafor and their pick for a proven point guard? Draft one instead? Frank!
Just having some fun thinking 76ers might someday actually have a team.

@ralster @kjayhawks I think you both missed my point. Although there are other meanings to the word rape that don't mean the crime, that casual use has only come into common practice in the past few decades. My concern is not that I was "offended": it was a plea to keep the word for use in the heinous context only to make it retain its opprobrium--to describe a horrible act and not daily disappointments.
There is an especially awful lifelong effect on rape victims, often unknown to everyone around them. The effects of getting a bad seed, or losing a game, or anything else like that, don't compare.
Anyone thinking it is acceptable to casually use the word, maybe you can check with anyone you know who has been raped. See how they feel about it. (It is not being a pansy, @ralster, to be aware that people around you might have different reactions stemming from different experiences.) If you find victims who don't mind the word being used as you defend, I am wrong. Bbut I think you will have to search very hard, and I bet there aren't a lot of them.
Finally, @kjayhawks, I acknowledged that you didn't intend anything bad so there was no reason to feel accused. I was making a larger context point. People can listen if they want, close their ears if they want, but language has impact and it doesn't hurt to be reminded of this.
@Crimsonorblue22 !!! Interesting how the two words connote something entirely different. I agree he didn't mean it offensively. Some internet research reveals that gamers especially seem to find it an acceptable use, and defend it vehemently, but they do not, I believe, have my background and certainly not my sensitivity.
I represented something like 150 convicted rapists when I did criminal appellate work in the Army. Thirty two years, and I still cannot forget reading the transcripts. What they did was so reprehensible that the word should be reserved for that horror and that horror alone.
@kjayhawks Just as sports shouldn't be equated to war, please remember that rape is a horrible thing and suggesting that a bad tournament seed is comparable to rape is a bit much. It is also jarring to see the word used in a context like sports, where we usually hope to avoid the harsher realities of life. Anyone who has faced it, personally or through a family member or friend, should not have to run into this type of smack in the face.
@JayHawkFanToo I donât think any veteran will take serious umbrage at Joel for being overly excited, for say the first half of this year at least. They all probably are willing to cut him a break when doing so well after missing two full years while rehabbing. The comments by Jefferson after the game suggest it isn't a huge issue but the incident can still provide a lesson to the rookie.
Now, if he doesn't take a hint, future reactions may be dicier for him........
@BShark If it were football we might not be in a position to have to worry. Unfortunate, but true.
:frowning:
@wrwlumpy Great job--Took me awhile, but I finally tracked down Michelle Phillips. Wife and I were stumped.....
@dylans When I was watching him he reminded me of someone with lower back strain, which could explain lots of stuff. Just from the way he was running and sometimes pulling his head and shoulders back as he slowed down. Just speculation, obviously!
@KUSTEVE Found this in Dallas Morning News
Kansas signee Marcus Garrett and Skyline headline Day 2 at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest

Skyline's Marcus Garrett (23) drives to the basket as Norman North's Winston Nelson (15) defends during the Thanksgiving Hoopfest high school basketball tournament at Sandra Meadows Arena on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, in Duncanville, Texas. (Smiley N. Pool/The Dallas Morning News)
By Randy Jennings, Special contributorContact Randy Jenningson Twitter:
DUNCANVILLE -- With future college coach Bill Self watching courtside, Skyline's Marcus Garrett wanted to stay calm.
"I didn't want to try and do too much,'' said Garrett, who signed with Self and Kansas a couple of weeks ago.
The versatile 6-6 senior did plenty, helping Skyline defeat Norman (Okla.) North 66-55 at the eighth annual Thanksgiving Hoopfest Saturday at Sandra Meadows Memorial Arena.
Garrett finished with 20 points and played a strong floor game, Â in the process putting a smile on Self's face.
Skyline (4-0) is No.13 in the Texas Association of Basketball Class 6A ranking.
Garrett, listed as a point guard, can play any position on the court including post, according to Skyline coach Paul Graham. He causes match-up problems for defenders.
"If they guard him with a smaller guy, we post Marcus up,'' said Graham. "Against a bigger guy, he goes around 'em. He's a different kind of player.''
Garrett said either plan of attack is fine with him.

@jaybate-1.0 I just thought the past few years that he sounded and rambled as if he was drunk when commenting on games. Vitale sounds coked or methed up, Walton high (for 40 years or so!), Knight drunk--wow, am I cynical!
The election has played no role in my reaction. Was there an election? Hmm, maybe it's time to party with the broadcasters!
I think I understand some of them better than I comprehend whatever the hell Bobby Knight blathers about.
@wrwlumpy Doesn't Kim Basinger own a town in Georgia?

Oh, come on. If you were a Missouri fan there's at least a 50% chance you'd be able to read a meth recipe better than that!
@sfbahawk Did she go to Syracuse by any chance?
@Red.Rooster I am always humbled by what so many people go through while keeping their grace and equillibrium. I will be holding you in my thoughts and prayers as well.
@stoptheflop Self is waiting for this season's HEM posts before switching to any other Board Rat.
@stoptheflop I suspect there was a major lesson taught not amenable to an ordinary tongue lashing: You don't play lackadaisically at KU. If you decide not to try, please sit this one out. No "gimmees" for even second tier opponents.
I had an English teacher throw my theme in the trash when I commented while turning it in that it wasn't very good. She asked why she should waste her time if I wasn't going to try? I took it out and told her I had tried but was having trouble getting it on paper. She reluctantly accepted it, but man was I scared straight.
First lesson, try hard. Second, don't denigrate your own effort! Lesson One led to getting nine straight As or A+'s for the rest of my assignments. Lesson Two -- well, sometimes I have been able to keep my mouth shut....

Best damn times of our lives lump & we didnât even know it.
You know by now, I hope, that you would not have wanted to know it? Thinking when so young that everything would go down hill from the carefree days of youth? I think we can only get through day to day if we are able to always delude ourselves about the promises of a bright future!
@YellowBeak Thank you. Something I have always found interesting to do since I usually discover something that might be useful to me, too, or lots of other people in the process. I just figure most people need to be willing to keep pressing for answers. I love and respect doctors, but they sometimes don't have the time for in-depth research for every case like Dr. House. So I figure if 200 people, or 2,000 or 20,000, share the information they have gotten from their doctors, it can help general enlightenment.
The danger (and it is yuge!) is when people read something, say, "That sounds like me!", and stop looking into it further because some idiot somewhere "cured" himself of earaches by chopping parsley and smashing it into his navel or something. The Internet has lots of info, but lots of BS, too. Being a (retired) judge helps me be skeptical and willing to sift through the bull in search of useful info.
@Crimsonorblue22 Remember, Bill Callahan was fired the year KU scored the most points ever scored against Nebraska (2007), and broke a long losing streak.
There is something depressing in thinking that your football rep is such that losing to you causes an opposing coach to get fired.
Wish it always worked (Liberace, anyone?)!
@jaybate-1.0 Wow, so all those came true! But not all equally shocking.
Trump? Earth-shaking direction-changing surprise!
Dylan? No one knew he was even in the running!
KU Texas? Had to happen sometime (see Chaminade vs #1 UVa)!
You abducted by aliens? Nah...no story there! :alien:
@Crimsonorblue22 I am still trying to edit out unintended emojis. Turn to me for medical advice? I will probably just give you lists of questions....
@Red.Rooster My (hospital worker) wife says she has seen people with undiagnosed liver diseases have uncontrollable itching. I know it can also be a side effect of diabetes, but I assume ordinary blood tests would have shown that.
I did a couple hours of research today trying to ferret something out that you might not have considered. It is depressingly astounding how many people on the Internet report this ailment and state they have not yet found a solution.
Some suggestions synthesized from this reading that your doctors might have already suggested, but you never know:
First, think back to one month to six weeks before it started. Any changes in a) diet; b) soap or laundry detergent (a change to Borax once caused me to erupt like crazy, now we use unscented All, a lifesaver); c) water chemistry, esp water softener if on a well (or any chance of chemical pollution) or home filtration, or bottled beverage intake; d) fabrics worn or bed linens or towels; e) pesticides inside or outside your home; f) vitamins or other medications; g) pets or pet behavior, even fleas or use of a flea collar; or h) a/c or furnace filters or buildup of dust anywhere in the house or car? Finally, any change in the temperature you keep at home?
Second, I assume you have considered scabies and or bed bugs?
Third, these things are often related to allergies or auto-immune issues. Sometimes people respond to a mild allergy or itchiness by taking antihistamines such Benadry, but those actually work by suppressing your body's immune system, and a side effect can be to dry out your tissues including the skin. Steroid/cortison use can sometimes relieve the itching, but it might conversely worsen it.
Fourth, does your wife's condition make her feel hot or burning, or cause unexplained sweating? You might see if lowering your house temperature 3 or 4 degrees brings some relief, or even more at night. Several people have reported that this made a difference, and I saw some speculation that people can develop allergies to their own sweating.
Fifth, check out any local businesses or industrial plants that might be nearby (perhaps a local environmental services agency or group) to see if any have been reported for releasing any chemicals, or if other people have also reported similar unexplained problems. You never know.
Anyway, these are just some ideas that cropped up. My heart goes out to both of you. It could be something external, but if not, I hope you have a chance to see a good neurologist if a dermatologist cannot find the answer. Liver issues would involved a hepatologist. Make any doctor you consult try to find an answer. Consider a research hospital if necessary.
Good luck. As you know, I am not a doctor, but I believe sometimes collective knowledge sharing among laymen can help doctors find some answers.
Edit: my parenthetical (letter bee) in the list above created an unintentional sunglasses emoji. Sorry about that.

@wissox It has been reported that rioting stopped immediately when the millennials were awarded participation trophies.
I have always believed that the participation trophies were used only because they were an important tool to shut up the parents of the kids.
@wissox You are affirmed, but sorry, this is by mayjay...
Don't worry about those Ivy kids getting coloring books, etc. Adult coloring books for stress relief were the biggest books sales before the election, so they should be able to find happy places after moving into the big wide real world!
And I am not stressing over the current divide. The Vietnam era was much worse. Protestors after an election can seem silly, but it gives them a feeling of having a voice, and they certainly keep certain issues from being ignored while the non-majority election winners confoundingly scream "Mandate!" Things like all this bickering over symbolism and language will calm down once policy bickering begins in earnest.
@BeddieKU23 Some people find him very appealing!
@HawkInMizery I assume they are for protection since we know the Zombie (read: Meth) Apocalypse will begin nearby? Good luck!
Incidentally, I have read your signature saying over a thousand times and still laugh every time. Thanks for that. Once in a while I try it on my wife--still works! Well, in that it makes her chuckle, too...
@jaybate-1.0 Good ones! And another:
"Traylor earned his playing time over Hunter Mickelson"
@bskeet I thought I heard one say during the Indiana game, "I wonder if the Towson coach is watching?" but I might be getting old and delusional. Or it could have been written in an article somewhere. But I suspect they are unhappy they lost FM and DG, but glad for the name mentions. The current coaches weren't the recruiting ones anyway, right?
@HawkInMizery Quite impressive! But with 2 jobs, can't you get out of Mizery? Call 911 and say you were abducted?
:scream:

@JayHawkFanToo Can you just turn off wi-fi on your phone and hook directly to the TV? And doesnât streaming on a network use up lots of a data plan?
Can you get TWC? If so, why not? Worth it for KU bb!!!
@Crimsonorblue22 I thought you always use emojis?
@BShark Didn't realize! I try to avoid all knowledge except to hope they beat Duke in bb....
The T on JJ was quite justified if not mandated. The refs' greatest attention will be drawn to overly in-your-face physical actions against an opposing player that can lead to retaliation and fights. I doubt any player would want someone to come and blast the ball out of their hands after play is stopped. An instinctive response would be to lash out, and a quick T helps prevent that.
I seem to remember many fans getting upset when demonstrative players like Smart or Beasley or Allen or that jerk from Syracuse (not the champ team) would do something like that.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I like the T-shirt fan explanation for the millions of (insufferable) Notre Dame fans inflicted on us nationally every year, enabled by NBC (becoming NDC during football season).
@chriz Well, don't beat yourself up. A bunch of people were skeptical back then of Frank coming in as a late commit after being "only a Towson" level player.... Some people thought he must be good, some trusted HCBS to know what he wanted, but some were quite negative--here is a typical comment from the skeptics on the LDJ article when he signed: "Self lands a former Towson commit with no other major offers? What the heck has happened to Self on the recruiting trail? Not happy with this commit. Looks like a Milt Doyle Part 2.0."
Now, of course, we knew all along what he would do!
@globaljaybird You are correct! I misread your post to crimson. Intended for @JayHawkFanToo! Deleted my post to you. Not appropos anymore. Sorry!
@justanotherfan Thank you! I was hoping, obviously incorrectly, that we would find someone open-minded to realizing a clear misunderstanding and might just say, like Emily Litella, "Never mind!" (Footnote)
*Needed (foot)note of levity (from Wikipedia):
Emily Litella is an elderly woman with a hearing problem who appeared 26 times on SNL's Weekend Update op-ed segment in the late 1970s. Attired in a frumpy dress, sweater and Lisa Loopner glasses, Litella was introduced with professional dignity by the news anchors, who could sometimes be seen cringing slightly in anticipation of the malapropisms they knew would follow.
Gilda Radner (as Litella) would peer through her reading glasses and, in the character's trademark high-pitched, warbly voice, would read a prepared statement in opposition to an editorial that the TV station had supposedly broadcast. These sketches were, in part, a parody of the Fairness Doctrine, which at the time required broadcasters in the United States to present opposing viewpoints on public issues. Litella would become increasingly agitated as her statement progressed. Midway in her commentary, it would became apparent that she had misheard and/or misunderstood the subject of the editorial to which she was responding. A typical example:
What is all this fuss I hear about the Supreme Court decision on a "deaf" penalty? It's terrible! Deaf people have enough problems as it is!
The news anchor would interrupt Litella to point out her error, along the lines, "That's death penalty, Ms. Litella, not deaf ... death." Litella would wrinkle her nose, say, "Oh, that's very different...." then meekly turn to the camera and say, "Never mind."Â
Other misheard topics to which Litella responded included "saving Soviet jewelry" [Jewry], "endangered feces" [species], "sax and violins on television" [sex and violence], "presidential erections" [elections], "conserving natural racehorses" [natural resources], "firing the handicapped" [hiring], and "making Puerto Rico a steak" [state]. About the last of these topics, she complained, "Next thing you know, they'll want a baked potato with sour cream!"
And people thought he wouldn't succeed in the NBA! Talent will rise!
@JayHawkFanToo Don't let the real facts bother you! Check out Snopes and you will find out your snippet has been truncated to mislead those of you who want to believe this stuff:
http://www.snopes.com/obama-encouraged-illegal-aliens-to-vote/ â
Read the transcript. The question, poorly phrased, expressed the fears of several groups about whether someone who could vote might endanger undocumenteds in their families, friends, etc, by drawing attention to them. The part left out of your video included Obama's specific statement that non-citizens could not vote. Your outrage on this is misdirected.
@sfbahawk "I guess the arm is a part of the ball."
In that photo, both the forearm and the shoulder, too!
Something is missing here!
