@Texas-Hawk-10 I don't see alcohol there, which is legal for players over 21.

TCU /probation from FBI case • Jun 30, 2021 12:00 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 said in TCU /probation from FBI case:

Townsend didn't take money

Correct. All the other cases have involved staff actually transferring or funneling money or accepting bribes. Ours is different. The evidence against KT consists of at most a comment that could have indicated he would consider extra benefits to Zion. But we didn't get Zion, so it is not probative of anything other than speculation.

The most interesting thing I learned today about the combine was that Garza tested the worst of all attendees in both the standing vert jump and the sprint. Expected to go low 2nd round if at all.

Greg Gard secretly recorded • Jun 23, 2021 10:53 PM

I don't remember very many coaches losing touch with their team so much that they need to have a meeting like this. Face it, any coach crying and apologizing to win them over ain't sticking around long, nor should he. Being that far out of touch is not healable because every single action is under scrutiny, every word parsed to death, and he basically is hostage to any anonymous griper. Best to go!

NCAA loses more power... again... • Jun 23, 2021 03:09 AM

How many slippery slopes

will sports slide down,

with people saying it will no longer be fun?

And how many colleges

will slowly go broke,

as they pay all the good athletes to attend?

How many times

will KU get outrecruited,

once the amateur sports mythology no longer stands?

The answer, my friends,

is it doesn't matter to true fans,

it just doesn't matter to true fans!

@tis4tim Thx for making me watch it several more times. I forgot the play actually started with an SC steal.

I think he should have gotten MOP.

that guy is one of my all-time favorite Jayhawks

Almost everyone remembers Mario's shot, but true fans appreciate Sherron as having made it possible with magic ball-handling (avoiding being fouled) and that beautiful pass while falling down. But his corner falling-out-of-bounds pass leading to his 3 ptr a couple seconds later was crucial to the comeback, too!

Geez, this never gets old:

@tis4tim Reminds me of a Psychology Today article about a survey of people exiting a casino. 80% said they won or broke even, most of whom claimed to win. Which would have put the casino out of business, of course.

Coach K to retire after 21-22 season • Jun 15, 2021 12:24 PM

I reslly don't think Collins (couldn't control his weight, blew off a tryout; who does that?) or Selby (9 game suspension by NCAA, late injury) whiffing can be attributed to KU.

As to wings, KU's alums trying to go pro are also competing not only with college players but with the huge numbers of foreign players. With only 2 rounds in the draft and huge contracts limiting free agent undrafted opportunities, there aren't a lot of chances for the merely really good to break through.

Seems like everyone between 6'3" and 6'9" wants to play wing anyway, all of them seeing themselves as 3-pt assassins and swoopers to the rim. Few players at 6'8" will bulk up anymore to play like Kurt Rambis did--they stay lean like Svi and sport nice stats. But wouldn't it have been nice to see more of these guys really crash the boards to seize rebounds rather than just being opportunistic? My pet peeve: even in the NBA, the wings stay outside to admire their shots.

Just a random bitching session...carry on!

In college, Trae Young wasn’t surrounded by multiple deadly shooters that could space the floor.

We talked about that a lot! Including comparing Trae to the early Nate Archibald years in KC where he could have had even more assists had other players been able to catch and shoot, and more points himself if his team had significant other threats.

At OU, Trae got the rep of ball hog but the reality was that he seemed better shooting at a high rate, even if out of control, than the guys fumbling his passes or not being able to finish.

It’s very hard to replace a legend, whether you are inside or outside the family. Expectations are high. Margins are thin. Every word you say, every interview, every in game decision, every recruit you get (or miss), it is all evaluated against the fantasy of the previous coach. Oh, former coach wouldn’t have done that. Former coach doesn’t lose that game. Former coach closes the deal on that recruit. Former coach… on and on and on.

Anyone in this situation should, of course, consult Squeaky about whether a mock funeral for the departed coach is a good idea for enhancing his own cred...

From the Rockford paper:

Frazzled by constant comparisons of Weber to Self's coaching, recruiting, personality and even his haberdasher, Weber stepped to the podium with a message.

"This is a funeral. I'm going to throw a funeral. It's the end of Bill Self,' '' Weber said that night. "It's over. There's no more comparing. He's gone. No more talking about it. I'll be honest. I'm fed up with it.''

Sign of the times. No loyalty to programs anymore when you have a free transfer year now

Not really loyalty when there was little or no choice. The coaches will need to work on making kids understand the benefits of staying in a program.

Much better than, "Sorry, kid. You signed a LOI back in HS, so suck it up or lose a year."

When loyalty is forced on coaches and schools in honoring contracts, I will lament kids being disloyal.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • May 11, 2021 07:31 PM

@DCHawker Subscription is really worth it! It is a really long article, detailing each player. But here are the first 2 paras, which give kind of a summary:

"Bill Self believes Kansas is still going to land at least one more guard. The Jayhawks are in the mix for Georgia transfer Sahvir Wheeler, and high school recruits TyTy Washington and Nolan Hickman. Add one of those point guards, and Kansas will likely start next season ranked in the top five.

"The roster, as is, is probably still a top-10 team. Self entered this offseason wanting to add speed and scoring, and he believes he’s done that with the three players he’s signed in the spring. 'There’s a higher ceiling with these recruits, I think, than what people probably realize,' Self told The Athletic."

Oops, didn't proof! Delete the beginning vowel!

KC as model? Whooddathunk it? • May 08, 2021 02:09 PM

@wissox Of course they are different, but there is still a general standard. I am talking about each umpire's trackable adjustments for height, or even LH or RH, that might be bigger or smaller than the standard. One guy might have a different strike zone for different teams...wouldn't that be a real ipisser for the union?

KC as model? Whooddathunk it? • May 08, 2021 01:08 AM

@wissox I would just like the data collectors to use the terabytes of information they have on how each umpire actually has his own peculiarities about the strike zone. But for each batter, they would have to explain, "So, up comes Slugger. Remember white is the strike zone established by Ump ABC for batters of Slugger's height over the last 500 games, while the red dotted line represents the strike zone as mandated by the rules."

We could have fun with the average deviations from the technical zone, etc.

Sahvir Wheeler • May 07, 2021 10:54 AM

Can't be too bad--All SEC voted by coaches. His comments about wanting to go someplace where he can compete for a title are encouraging. I wonder how many turnovers were caused by teammates being unable to catch his passes. Many commentators think he can do a lot better with players who aren't as crappy as Crean's team is.

5'8" out of HS, then 5'10" at UGA, and I see 5'11" in some writeups about entering the portal. Kid is still growing--Expect him to be 6' if he goes to KU.

Vaccine • May 06, 2021 04:37 AM

@FarmerJayhawk I save my looks for people refusing to wear masks indoors at places that post signs at the entrance. They come in with an "I dare you!" look, and I just gaze on in wide-eyed puzzlement at the refusal to just get along with people.

Vaccine • May 06, 2021 01:04 AM

Soon you both will be able to go outside without masks. Of course, 99% of Americans have done so all along when not in crowds, but now you don’t have to worry about pissing off some rabid antimasker or some proselytizing masker!

IARP update • May 02, 2021 10:30 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 Okay, you have decided it so no need for further discussion from me.

IARP update • May 02, 2021 04:05 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 The decisions are not directly appealable, but organizations are required to follow their own rules. Many federal courts have accepted jurisdiction to review a process ab initio where egregious violations of fundamental concepts of fairness have occurred. I have already extensively analyzed how I think the NCAA's charged stemmed from violations of their own evidentiary and investigative rules. Kansas has not waived its right to sue in federal court, only the right to have the IARP decision reviewed on the merits.

IARP update • Apr 30, 2021 04:25 PM

Does anyone realize the IARP is not a direct part of the NCAA? I am not sure the NCAA has any control of the timeline. The fact that they issued a statement at all seems very odd to me. What contacts are they relying on within this "independent" body, or were they just stating a conjecture about a general expectation? That would explain the year as an outside guess.
